THE PRINCIPAL’S PEN
Dear Parents,
This afternoon we welcomed home the happy Year 7 Campers. They were all in one piece and
very proud of their Point Peron achievements. Throughout the week I received photos of the
students involved in a range of exciting challenges with a very interesting photo of Mr Morgan
abseiling from some extreme heights. Our thanks go to Graeme Morgan and Georgia Mills who
gave up their time to enable students to have a week forming positive relationships with their
peers and supporting one another in some very challenging exercises. These activities have
prepared the students well for high school where they will be mixing with much larger cohorts
and choosing new friendship bases. It is vital that students have the independence and social
competencies to make informed choices as individuals who have moved away from the different
structures of primary school education. It was also a time for staff to make assessments about
students who may need more support to develop the independence needed for secondary
studies. This information is forwarded to high school staff as part of our transition program.
Cyril Jackson SHS
Yesterday we received a magnificent jarrah bench made by students at Cyril Jackson SHS. They
wanted to give Deanmore a unique way of remembering those Australia lost on MH17 and in
particular our much loved students. The bench is available for all to admire in the school office
area. We will find suitable words to inscribe on a plaque so that the bench will always be a place
of quiet reflection and gratitude to those who reached out to us in our hour of need.

The response to our campaign to reduce the dangerous situation in our car parks has had a
positive outcome. Parents have commented on how much safer they feel bringing their children
to school without dodging reversing traffic. The Car Parks are all sign posted now advising
parents and visitors not to enter these areas. Schools will always be congested times at during
drop off and pick up times and it is up to the goodwill of the community to abide by the traffic
code and keep our children safe. Some parents are still parking illegally and that is a matter that
the Shire has been asked to manage.

A WORD FROM THE DEPUTIES
Enrolments for 2015
The new student-centred funding model will be implemented for the 2015 school year.
From next year, funding for schools will be centred on the student. This is quite different from what has happened in the past
where funding has primarily been based on school types and education programs.
Funding will now be directed for each student enrolled in every school. This will be the majority of the funding that each school
receives and will be based on the year level of each student. For example, all Pre-primary students will be funded at the same
amount no matter where they live in Western Australia or the type of school they attend.
With the new student centred funding model, a decrease in enrolments will have a significant impact on funding for staffing and
resources.
If your child will not be attending Deanmore in 2015, please notify the office as soon as possible to assist us with our planning for
next year.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD): Suggestions for families
Children with ADHD have difficulties with keeping their attention on the task at hand, not shifting from one thing to another, and
thinking through the consequences following an action. These difficulties seem to delay the child in managing his or her own
behaviour.
How you can help
Parents and carers can help by setting up clear expectations and routines. Children learn skills for self-management when they
have a structure to guide their behaviour. Discipline strategies that work with other children also work with children who have
ADHD, but they need to be put in place more strictly and over a longer time span until the child’s self-management has developed.
If you find yourself irritated by your child’s behaviour, try to remember that he or she may be struggling more than other children
to learn how to respond as expected.
Be consistent
Set up rules and daily routines to provide a structure for children with ADHD. Be consistent with your expectations. This helps
children to remember what is expected of them so that they can learn to regulate their own behaviour.
Give clear instructions
Make instructions brief and to the point. If necessary ask your child to look at you and repeat them back to you to ensure that he
or she has firstly focused and then is ready to hear and understand what you mean.
Give prompt feedback
Feedback and consequences work better when given straight away.
Avoid the negatives
Try to ignore minor misbehaviour. It is best to try to stay out of power struggles with your child. Try to also remain positive and
avoid strong criticism.
Incentives before punishment
Use praise and reward to increase motivation and build cooperation. Program yourself to see the achievements rather than the
mistakes. Look for reasons why the child has not done as expected and use consequences sparingly.
Less talking, more action
Showing children as well as telling them what is wanted ensures the message is understood. Follow through on what you have
asked your child to do and help them to finish what they have started if required so that they can experience successes.
Teach skills
It can be very helpful for parents and carers to teach problem-solving skills, time management skills, and good work habits.
Remember to spell out what is involved in easy steps. Provide lots of support and praise until your child becomes more
independent with these skills over time.
Plan ahead
Help your child to make plans that organise what he or she has to do. Create lists and display them as reminders for your child.
Be a coach
Encourage rule following, monitor progress and increase motivation.
Look after yourself
Having a child with extra needs can be stressful. Be sure to take care of your own needs too.
SCHOOL PARKING
We would like to extend our thanks to the parent community for their cooperation regarding parking around our school.
School carparks have now been designated ‘staff parking only’. Please observe all signage and park in allocated roadside bays
located on Deanmore Rd, Rinaldi St, Rainer St and on the grassed verge on Newborough St when dropping off and picking up
children.
The safety of our students is of paramount importance, so please consider student safety when parking around the school by
observing the following guidelines.

CLASSROOM SNAPSHOTS
On Tuesday November 4th Rooms 6 and 8 went on an excursion to the Perth Zoo. Mr Dan Micevski would like to thank to all
the parents, teachers and students who came along to help.
Students from Room 8 and Room 6 were treated to an exciting visit
to the Perth Zoo last week. Students went through the ‘African
Savannah’ that features giraffes, lions, baboons and zebras. We
observed animals from the ‘Asian Rainforest’ that included orangutans, tigers and gibbons. We did an ‘Australian Bushwalk’ where
we saw kangaroos, dingos, wombats and koalas. We also had
reptile and nocturnal encounters. We learnt a lot about different
animals and contributed to vital conservation programs that will
help ensure the survival of many animal species. A magnificent day!

P & C UPDATE
Subject: P&C Open House Supper - 24 Nov, 7.30pm
2014 has been a busy, successful and challenging year for the Deanmore community. Several long-term members of the P&C
committee will be leaving Deanmore as their children move on to high school, and so to acknowledge the year that has been and
farewell our President, Vice-President and several other committee members, the usual November P&C meeting will be replaced
by an Open House Supper on Monday 24 November at 7.30pm.
The existing Committee and School Admin members will be present and would love to know your thoughts and have your input on how
you see the P&C in 2015 and beyond: Do you think we should do more? Less? Just do things differently?
Or would you just like to relax with friends, meet with other members of your school community, and share some Christmas cheer?
Please join us - working together, we can do so much more!

Light supper and beverages provided. Supper will be held in the Staff Room, entry through main school reception.
