Gochioco Assistant Vice President for Administration Dr. Dionisia Lanuza Principal for Senior High School Head, Legal Affairs Department Brian O. Co Chief Information Officer Gianina Angela Celine O. Cabanilla Chief Knowledge Officer Message of the Principal Prior to 2011, the Philippines was the only remaining country in Asia to keep the 10-year basic education before college. Because of this, many criticized that Filipino students were falling behind in the core academic subjects—Mathematics, Science, and English. With the implementation of the K-12, young adults are given better opportunities to ready themselves for the tertiary level of education. They are given a chance to enter the work force after completion of secondary levels. Students are also better equipped to pursue higher education. Lastly, the K-12 system reduces the number of residency years in college. Mapúa Senior High School provides these opportunities for you. For 90 years, Mapúa has been providing worldclass quality education. And you, in choosing Mapúa Senior High School, are taking college readiness to a higher level! With the global accreditations and recognitions that the Institute and its programs have, you are sure that you have made the right decision in choosing to enroll here as another step in achieving your goals in the future—whether it is to continue with higher studies or become a professional abroad. With the ever-evolving world today, Mapúa SHS will help you acquire advanced skills that will make you globally competitive. The competent faculty of Mapúa SHS, tasked to deliver the most effective education standards, will not only provide an overview of knowledge inside the classroom, but will also encourage students to explore and think outside the box. In Mapúa Senior High School, students are always one step ahead! Dr. Dionisia M. Lanuza Principal, Mapúa Senior High School 2 MAPÚA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY THE VIEWBOOK 2015–2016 The Mapúan Edge Get ready for the world. Study at Mapúa Senior High School. Blackboard® Learn M apúa Institute of Technology launched Blackboard Learn, a new learning management system (LMS) for all its schools and departments, including the Malayan High School of Science (MHSS) and the Malayan Colleges Laguna (MCL). Blackboard Learn is a tool that provides students and teachers an easy and effective way to access course materials. It gives the capability for asynchronous online collaboration and course delivery, advanced roles and rights management, including the capability to create customized communities of users, library integration, and a centralized content repository with granular control over content objects. The new technology will give way to the standardization of LMS across all programs and departments of the Institute and its subsidiaries. “Currently, we are using several free LMS such as Moodle, Canvas, and the like, and we cannot maximize them according to what we need in terms of reports needed by the different schools or programs,” Center for Teaching and Learning head Mary Christine A. Tomas said. She added that Blackboard differs because unlike free LMS, students and faculty members can tailor their Blackboard page according to their classroom needs. Also, Blackboard Learn provides faculty members access to their students’ progress. It includes a tool that allows teachers and professors to detect plagiarism, distribute class reading, and conduct online conferences for distance learning. 5 6 MAPÚA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY THE VIEWBOOK 2015–2016 SHS Academic Strands Strand 1: Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Designed to prepare students who express keen interest in taking college degrees focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, this strand aims to familiarize the students with all the aspects involved in applying engineering, science, math, and technology to solve problems in a real- world context.
