October 2012 Volume XIX, Number 2 Senatobia High School Students Help Save Lives and Make Miracles Happen Mitchell Redd Junior Mississippi Blood Services recently made a visit to Senatobia High School, on September 18. The service is a non-profit organization committed to providing a safe and adequate supply of voluntarily donated blood and blood components for patients in hospitals and to offer related services to hospitals and other medical facilities. Throughout the day, students and teachers filled the blood buses, both eager and nervous about donating blood. Mrs. Deborah Wages, the school nurse, was very pleased with the outcome of this semester’s Warrior Connection Staff Senatobia High School junior Jasmine Brock attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar in Jackson, MS The Mississippi Blood Services Blood Mobile blood drive. ITS is the world’s largest organization that honors high school theatre students. Many celebrities have been a part of this prestigious organization, including Madonna, John Goodman, and Tom Hanks. Jonathan Miles was happy with the SHS Performing Arts Students at a previous performance this summer. Jasmine joined over 200 other young leaders from high schools across the state for the three-day conference. HOBY leadership seminars bring together a select group of high school sophomores from public, private and parochial schools to interact with groups of distinguished leaders in business, government, education and the professions to discuss present and future issues. The goal is to provide the youths a stimulating forum for learning about critical issues while broadening their understanding of their leadership potential and quest for self-development. HOBY leaders are also challenged to return to their community to perform at least 100 hours of community service within 12 months following the seminar. Jasmine is Junior Class President, drum major for the Warrior Band, and is a 4.0 student. She attends Senatobia Church of Christ. SHS Student Crowned MissTate County Erica Danielle Austein, SHS senior, was recently crowned Miss Tate County at the pageant held during the Tate County Fair. She is the daughter of Kim and Phillip Austein. This comes as no surprise to the Warrior Nation; she was selected Most Beautiful for 2012 at the SHS Beauty Review last January. Erica is a very active young woman. She was percussion section leader for the Warrior Band; she is a member of Interact Service Club, Beta Club and is president of the Performing Arts Alliance. Erica is the founding president of the International Thespian Society Troupe. She has been nominated for Best Actress, Best Director and has won the Director’s Choice award by The North Mississippi Theater Alliance. In her spare time she enjoys scuba diving. Senatobia High School is very proud to have Miss Tate County as a distinguished member of the student body. Endowment for Excellence in Education Benefits Senatobia Students and Teachers Faculty Focus Amy Lynn Baker Subjects taught: Honors Biology and Biology I Hometown: Madison, Alabama Educational background and how long have you been teaching: I graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science and Biology. After graduation, I worked as an environmental consultant with Exxon Mobil in the Northwestern portion of the United States. I went back to school and began additional studies to complete my teaching certification and I have been blessed to have been influencing and teaching students for seven years. Hobbies/Interest:I enjoy spending time with my family, running, shopping, reading, and I enjoy any activity outside. An interesting fact about yourself: After college I lived in a tent for three consecutive summers in Big Sky, MT; Leland, MI; and Jackson, WY. Most important moment or accomplishment: I have so many special moments and wonderful accomplishments I have been able to fulfill throughout my life. The most important would be my children. I am so blessed to have them and I love being a mom. Other major accomplishments include being able to work with the students and teach them confidence as well as academics. I enjoy teaching and observing the students for an entire year as they prepare for the Biology SATP test as well as mature. Hobbies/Interests: I enjoy being in the Warrior Band Colorguard, where I serve as captain, reading, playing clarinet, and ringing my cowbell during MSU football games. Registration Deadline Future Plans: I plan on attending the University of Mississippi and pursuing an advanced degree in music education or trumpet performance. H o b b i e s / I n t e r ests: I enjoy being with my friends, reading, my nephew and practicing my trumpet, playing with mentoring and tutoring other students. Best Advice You Ever Received: To find happiness in the little things because the big stuff does not matter in the end. An interesting Fact about Yourself: I am a two year member of the MS Lion’s All State Band and I have traveled to Seattle, Washington, Canada, and Hawaii with them. If I make it this year, I will set a record in our band by being the only person to be selected to be in this honor band for three years. If selected, I will go to Hamburg, Germany.
