Words from our Chapter Directors Steve and Teri Rippe. At the end of May, Teri with her Spyder and trailer, Joe with his GL1800 and trailer, Shirley with her GL1800 trike and trailer and myself with my GL1800 (all lonely without a trailer) left Fresno for the great wilderness of Yellowstone on our way to the Region Convention. On the first night we stayed in beautiful Roseville. By the way, Teri got me a new shirt that says “The sarcasm is strong with this one” and she may be right. Leaving early the next morning we tackled the Sierra Nevada mountains through Reno and on into Elko Nevada for our second night. Elko wasn’t bad and the hotel was nice. The Mexican restaurant we ate at called Dos Amigos was really good. On Sunday we rode up to Idaho Falls Idaho and stopped at a really cool motel right on the river. Really scenic and with the waterfall there it was quite relaxing. We walked over to Applebee’s and enjoyed a conversation with the three young ladies working there. They told us about a place called Mesa Falls that was on our way north. Monday we stopped at Mesa Falls and it was well worth the detour. It’s a great area and the scenery was beautiful. We finally arrived in the town of West Yellowstone in the afternoon. One square mile in size this is a compact little town but it has almost anything you could need. Anything, that is, except a Honda Dealership. Shirley’s trike had developed an electrical problem that killed all of her audio including the CB and none of her heated gear worked. Knowing that it was going to be rather cool the next day we decided to book seats on a tour bus. What a providential decision that turned out to be. Words from our Chapter Directors Steve and Teri Rippe. The next morning, bright and early we got on the “Yellow Bus”. Our tour guide/driver was worth his weight in gold and gave us the grand tour of the “lower loop”. We saw almost every major form of wildlife Yellowstone has to offer as well as witnessing the eruption of both Beehive and Old Faithful geysers. For me the highlight of the tour was the rather large gray wolf we watched stalking across a meadow. Did I mention the bison, elk, grizzly bears, coyote, moose, antelope, osprey, deer and bald eagles? Wednesday we left Yellowstone Park through the East Entrance and headed over to Cody Wyoming. Ask Teri about our close encounter with bison on the bridge. After we left the park and just before getting to Cody, we rounded a mountain and we all got to use emergency braking as a big horn sheep (and I do mean BIG) ran onto the highway in front of us. His buddy made a better decision and elected to wait until we passed to cross. Thank you Streetmasters!* We dropped Shirley’s trike off at a local dealer and went into town to check out the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum. This is a fabulous museum. There are five sections to it; Western Art, American Indians, Natural History, Bill Cody, and Firearms. We saw them all but hardly did them justice. I spent most of my time admiring the very impressive collection of firearms including Thomas Jefferson’s rifle. I highly recommend checking this place out if you get the chance but make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to do so. *Streetmaster motorcycle training see page 43 Words from our Chapter Directors Steve and Teri Rippe. We left Joe and Shirley in Cody so they could finish her trike and made our way down to St. George via Evanston Wyoming. Out of Evanston we saw rain falling ahead and I saw on my bike’s GPS a weather symbol so I pressed the lower left zoom button and got the weather radar displayed on the map. What a great feature. We stopped just before the area on the map showing rain and put our rain gear on. A couple of minutes down the road and we were in it. Once we were clear of the weather on the map we pulled over and continued our trip nice and dry without the gear. Nicely done Honda! This turned out to be a great trip and aside from Shirley’s electrical problem without troubles. If you’re interested I can send you information about the route we took with the side trips. I can’t wrap this story up without mentioning how proud I am of Teri and how well she handled her first long motorcycle trip on her own ride. I’m a very lucky guy to have such a great wife and to know such great people as Joe and Shirley Machado. Words from our Assistant Chapter Director Joe Machado Hi everyone, how fast this year is going, were already headed into July! We’ve been to Chapter CA-1L’s rally had a great time like we always do. I won a XM radio as it would be I was going to purchase one for my Goldwing so that made me happy... We spent the weekend there to celebrate our 56th Wedding Anniversary. A Little shopping and a great dinner at AJ Spurs. Great weekend with very nice weather. Then to CA-2Q where we bought a beautiful handmade table cloth with matching napkins, very nice. This chapter puts on a great yard sale, next Steve and I rode to CA-2S’s meeting for a visit and to promote our chapter raffle. We enjoyed their comradery and our ride home. Our last ride this month was to a wonderful place called Columbia Park. A group of us rode there to ride the zip line and go into the moaning cavern. The zip line ride was very exciting, what an adventure. I will do it again! Boy was that fun. Then we went into the cavern, where we had to go down over 200 hundred feet a step at a time. It was very cool but comfortable down there. That’s not the end of the story. After we rested we had to go up those same steps!! OH NO!! Yep we did. Now that took us a little longer but it had to be done or sleep there...!!LOL!! We were pooped… The guide was very informative and interesting. This was a very fun month for us and hope to see more of you on these adventures. They are really a lot of fun. Continue to Ride Safe WOLFPACK CA2W Joe S. Machado Jr. ACD Words from our Assistant Chapter Directors Larry and Lindy Jenkins June sure has been one busy month. We certainly have enjoyed going to the chapter events and to our chapter get togethers. We began the month on June 6th we went for Chinese food at Sunrise Kitchen in Fresno, CA with our group from CA-2W. We had some good Chinese food and some fun mingling! Then off to chapter events. The first was CA-1L’s Chapter Event in San Luis Obispo, CA on June 7th. They absolutely put on a great event. We had so much fun and of course the meal was great. Larry won some fun raffle prizes (nine total). The next chapter event was in Paramount, CA for CA-1D on June 14th. This is a small chapter but they did a great job. This time Lindy won 2 door prizes and one of the game prizes. Off to Fresno on June 17th to our Team meeting at Brooks Ranch. Back to Fresno on June 19th for our Chapter Social at “Great Wall”. Once again---Chinese food! I guess you can say CA-2W likes Chinese food!!! J A fun gathering with great food and friends. June 20th we headed North to Redding. CA, spending the night so we could attend CA-2R’s Chapter Event on June 21st. This is the second year for this event and it was better than the first year. Again Lindy won three games prizes and Larry won one of the 50/25/25 money for $153.00. Note: this make three of the four money drawings at this chapter last two events. We have been lucky this month but the pendulum does swing both ways. We could say "It Pays to Support Other Chapters and Other Chapter Events". The last place we went to in June was to Tulare, CA to CA-2A's chapter gathering. Again this is a small group but they do support our group. We love going to their meetings, seeing our friends and the food is very good. We love to travel because we get to see our friends from GWRRA. Next Chapter Event is in Sacramento, CA for CAC in July 19th.* We are looking forward to seeing our friends up North. Stay hydrated and Enjoy the Ride, Larry & Lindy Jenkins Assistant Chapter Directors * See Page 18 and 19 Words from our District Directors Vincent and Pamela Puterbaugh Winging It To Wisconsin As most of you are reading this, Princess and I are winging our way to Madison, Wisconsin, but, unfortunately, winging it, this time, means flying and not riding. Like many of you, we are still working and don’t have an unlimited number of vacation days and have to make our travel choices count and that is why Pam and I are so appreciative of how many of you have already registered for the District Convention in Agoura Hills. The down side to so many early registrations is that there are only a few rooms left at the $89 room rate. For those who do not grab one soon, the Hampton Inn is a block away, but rates for the holiday weekend start at $160 a night. If you attended the Region Rally in St. George, Utah this year, you had the opportunity to complete one entire segment (six classes) of the LTP curriculum entitled, “Chapter Life”. We will be offering all eight seminars of the “Life Skills” curriculum during the weekend. This should allow for many teaching opportunities for all of the University Trainers that wish to become certified in teaching the Leadership Training Curriculum. Additionally, we will have the Advanced Rider Course for motorcyclists as well the Trike Rider Course. These classes will be offered along with several Rider Education seminars and, by popular demand, the Parking Lot Facilitator Certification Course will be back again this year. Vince & Pam at the last three chapter events (from left to right) CA-2R Redding, CA-1D Paramount, CA-1L San Luis Obispo Words from our District Directors Vincent and Pamela Puterbaugh Winging It To Wisconsin Like last year, we will have a dinner show on Sunday night before closing ceremonies. In keeping with this year’s theme, we will have a professional hypnotist performing and we were fortunate enough to book Marc Bachrach. Marc has performed as a corporate entertainer for such companies as 3M, Northrop, Dole, American Airlines, Kawasaki, and McDonalds. Marc bills himself as the kinder, more respectful comedic hypnotist and promises that no one will be barking like a dog or clucking like a chicken and with over 1,500 stage performances worth of experience, we should be in for a real treat! Many people have come up to Princess and asked us why they have to purchase the dinner tickets in order to see the show. The answer is simple: it is the food and beverage sales that pay for all of the ball rooms we use to hold our trainings. The other question we get is, “Why not include the cost of the dinner in the registration and include everyone?” The answer to this one is a matter of fairness. We know that not everyone has Monday off and not everyone can stay through Sunday night and we feel that making people pay for something that they will not be able to attend is just not right. In order to give our members the best experience possible, we allow you to decide what best fits your needs, but whether you come to the show or not, we just want you to show up at the convention and hang out with us. By the time you read this article the complete list of classes and activities will have already been posted to the website so you can plan your weekend. Until then ride well and ride often and, hopefully, we will see you at Wing Ding. Sincerely, Vincent and Pam Puterbaugh Words from our Chapter Educator Shirley Machado Let me start by saying I didn’t ever think I would be writing an article like this one. For those of you who didn’t hear our son Michael was in a very bad motorcycle accident. Michael is a very good rider he has been riding since a young boy. You never know when something like this is going to happen. By all rights Michael shouldn’t be with us today. Michael is very dedicated to riding with all his safety gear on all the time and this day was no exception. Michael was in full gear at the time of the accident. When Michael regained consciousness he woke to a police officer asking him his name, then they proceeded to ask him a few questions. They told him he wasn’t lucky he was a very smart man because he all the safety gear on and that’s what saved his life. Michael has 10 broken bones, both legs, 4 ribs, his elbow, his scapula, his pelvis and hip. No road burn to speak of and his face didn’t have anything done to it at all. The police officer told him his helmet was the most important thing he had on, because he hit the wall with his head. The helmet didn’t crack or break. The tow people asked us when we picked his bike up if Michael was alive. He said he has never seen a rider live thru this bad of an accident. Again it was the Safety Gear that saved his life. I only thank our Lord that he gave Michael the conviction and the brains to always use his safety riding gear. We have pictures of Michaels bike with his permission. I hope everyone who reads this article really thinks about the way they ride and what they wear from now on. Ride Safe and Ride your Ride Wolf Pack CA2W Shirley J. Machado Rider Ed. HOWLING WOLF AWARD By Teri Rippe Monthly, we ask for nominations for those active members of our Chapter who have gone above and beyond or maybe have just done something nice for someone else. It doesn’t have to be during a Chapter function or even involve other Chapter participants. It just needs to be something nice. The Howling Wolf Award goes to no one because we did not have a meeting in June there was no winner. Please sent in your nominations to Teri for August meeting “ TRIP TO SACRAMENTO When Friday July 18th to Sunday July 20th Hotel: Governors Inn Hotel Sacramento We are planning a trip to Old Sacramento. The trip will include the CAC Bear Fair 2014. If you’ve not been to the Sacramento Chapter’s Rally, make this the trip you do go on. They always do a great job. The plan is to each make our way to the Hotel in Sacramento on Friday. Since there are many variables in time off work, instead of trying to leave together, it seems best to meet at the hotel whenever you can get there. Diane and I will be leaving around 5:00 PM. Some of the others can leave early. So if you want to go and want to ride together let Steve or I know and we will match you up with a ride buddy. Friday night is planned loosely as those that get there early enough to dine together can make plans together. On Saturday the hotel has a breakfast and the bears should have donuts laid out at 9:00 am for the registration at the rally. I plan on taking the local ride they will have so if you want to go with us we will be leaving the hotel around 8:30 am. This will give us ample time to resister and do the ride.
