What is a Baltimore Scholar?
You’ve known about Johns Hopkins
University for years. But have you
considered applying for admission? Maybe
your answer should be YES! Thanks to a
new scholarship program, several Baltimore
Scholars––incoming freshmen who have
attended a Baltimore city public high school
for the last three years and who will receive
free tuition––are expected to join the next
Hopkins class. Scholarships are available to
attend undergraduate
programs at the Krieger
School of Arts & Sciences,
the Whiting School of
Engineering, the School
of Nursing, the School
of Professional Studies in
Business & Education, and
the Peabody Conservatory.
If you are accepted here
as a Baltimore Scholar,
you don’t just get in. You
also get guidance. That’s because Baltimore
Scholars are paired with a faculty adviser, as well
as professional academic advisers. These faculty
members and administrators help students with
social, academic, and personal advising needs.
Political science professor Matthew Crensen,
himself a graduate of Baltimore public schools,
serves as primary adviser and plans programs
to help you make the most out of your Hopkins
learning experience.
Who is eligible?
The Baltimore Scholars Program is open to
Baltimore City residents who have been enrolled
in a public high school in the city for the past
three years. Prospective Baltimore Scholars must
apply for admission as freshmen and be offered

office at the school to which you wish to apply.
admission to Johns Hopkins University. Scholarships
are available to full-time candidates for first bachelor’s
degrees. Baltimore Scholars who meet admission
criteria can transfer between divisions of the university
and keep their scholarships. Tuition support continues
as long as a student maintains at least a 2.0 GPA,
completes at least 12 credits per semester, and remains
in good standing.

All tuition—paid for four years. Baltimore Scholars
receive a scholarship that covers tuition and required
fees for four academic years of undergraduate
study leading to a bachelor’s degree. Depending on
financial need, applicants may also be eligible for
additional financial support to cover other educational
and living expenses.
How do I apply?
When you apply to Hopkins you also apply to the
Baltimore Scholars Program; no additional application
is required. Contact the appropriate admissions office
to receive an application for undergraduate admission,
or go to that school’s Web site to download an
application. In some cases, you can apply online. Along
with your application, please include any letters of
recommendation specifically for this scholarship from
your principal, guidance counselor, and/or teachers.
