Martin-Till™ Planting System
The Martin-Till™ planting system is designed to help achieve several goals: to increase the
number of days available for planting, improve stands, and increase the chances of faster early
growth in a wide range of soil conditions. We accomplish these goals by using a combination
of planting attachments in a five-step process.
1
Clean and lightly till without furrowing out.
Use our Martin-Till Row Cleaners to remove excess residue and clods from the
row without furrowing or slabbing and fleaking the soil.
2
Place fertilizer in soil, not on trash or planter.
Use our Martin Unit-Mounted Fertilizer Openers to place liquid fertilizer very
precisely beside the row.
3
Let the seed disks lift part of the sidewall.
Use our Reduced Inner Diameter Gauge Tires to open the seed trench with a
minimum amount of sidewall compaction.
4
Close without surface compaction.
After the seed is in the furrow, use our Martin Spading-Closing Wheels to move the
soil toward the seed at seeding depth while lifting and fracturing the sidewall.
5
Level row and seal air pockets.
Finally, use our Twisted Drag Chain to level and lightly firm the row.
These simple planter attachments are making it possible for more and more farmers to
plant into higher levels of residue. Millions of acres are now planted this way each year and
many of our customers are repeat buyers. Higher levels of mulch mean less erosion and
more consistent and lower cost yields, all while the soil is rebuilding itself in preparation for
supplying cheap food for generations to come. Happy planting!
A Note from Howard
Weather extremes have been in the news a lot lately. Departures from the so-called
normal pattern (actually a 125 year average) are frequent. The majority of those who
study and try to understand our planet’s climate expect gradually warming temperatures
to lead to widely spaced but more intense rainfall events.
Keeping as much surface residue in place as practical will be a key survival tactic. Having
crops planted in a number of different locations is also a good risk avoidance strategy. A
properly equipped seeder will be even more important in the future.
Take a look at the Martin-Till™ Planting System. I think you will find it useful in dealing
with the one weather constant we can count on—change.

Step 1: Clean and lightly till without
furrowing out
Martin Row Cleaners
Properly designed row cleaners provide a very
desirable type of tillage. Th e row cleaner teeth
continuously engage the soil to the shallow depth of
1" to 1½". This scarifying of the soil’s surface layer
makes it easier for the seed openers to open a welldefined “V” but without furrowing out or causing
slabbing or fleaking. Eliminating furrows is the key
to preventing erosion in the row on slopes and the
ponding of water over the row in level areas. Martin
Row Cleaners come in two basic types: rigid and
floating.
Rigid
Our rigid models are more aggressive row cleaners
and are particularly useful whena furrow is needed
to reach moisture. Rigid models are available for all
popular planters.
Side Treader Wheels
Our side treader wheels are a very good option,
one most customers order, for the floating row
cleaners because they help prevent unwanted
trenching in softer parts of the field. Recent
Farm Journal tests show a large yield increase
when using this option.
All Martin Row Cleaners have the following
features:
• 3/8" thick, high-strength, right- and
left-toothed wheels with diamond shaped points
Martin Row Cleaners
Floating
Our floating models have the advantage of always
moving residue and lightly tilling the seed zone and
leaving no skips or furrowed out places. Floating
models fit most popular planters and may be used
ahead of most no-till coulters or certain fertilizer
openers including our UMO-100 Unit-Mounted
Fertilizer Opener.

Martin Row Cleaners
The Martin original style row cleaner clears the widest
path of any tooth wheel row cleaner on the market.
The 15" diameter wheels are made left and right in
order to shed the residue better. The axles are located
to the rear of the adjustable stem in order to insure
a simultaneous stretching and cutting of the residue.
The teeth on the cleaning wheels actually reach past
the edge of the planter gauge wheel rubber. This
guarantees a clear path for planter operation even at
reduced speeds.
The space between the teeth is wider than any
competitor’s to enable soil to remain in place as
residue is raked aside. The teeth intersect in order to
reach the entire row middle and to aid in cleaning
one another.

Martin Row Cleaners
The Martin Narrow Row Cleaner Model WA1320N
is designed to clean residue from the vital seed trench
area with less total disturbance than regular models.
Two wheels are used to insure that residue is removed
from the row center and not just dragged across the
row as may occur with single wheel models.
This model is recommended for 20" planters that
have all units on one bar operating in moderate
residue. Because the cleaning teeth reach their
maximum depth nearer the row than other models,
the seed trench is more easily opened and the trench
walls are more likely to crumble. The planter path
will retain more moisture where this model is used
than where the regular width cleaners are operated.

trash or planter
Martin Unit-Mounted
Fertilizer Opener
Martin Unit-Mounted Fertilizer Openers
Our fertilizer opener mounts directly to the planting
unit and is compact enough to be used with our
C125 Row Cleaners. Because the opener mounts
directly to the planter unit, the fertilizer is always
precisely the same distance from the seed even when
planting on the contour. The lateral spacing from
the seed can be 1", 2", or 3", and there are three
vertical settings that allow fertilizer to be placed
3/4" above, even with, or 3/4" below seed depth.
We like the way it consistently places the fertilizer in
the ground without splattering it on the planter.

Step 3: Use Reduced Inner Diameter
Gauge Tires to allow the seed disk to lift
part of the sidewall and leave it less dense
Reduced Inner Diameter
Gauge Tires
To reduce sidewall compaction to a minimum, JD
style planters will need the gauge wheel tires changed
to reduced inner diameter style to allow the seed trench
walls to lift slightly. Because this style of gauge wheel
tire is so friendly to the seed trench wall, we recommend
them for 750 drills. This change allows us to return to
the field a day or two sooner after each rain.

Keeton Seed Firmers
My neighbor Eugene Keeton invented the finger
pickup and brush meters. In 1993 he brought a
handful of steel cables and duck tape to our farm to
tie to the seed tubes on our old 8-row planter. My
sons were not amused at the thought of something
else that might cause a delay in planting since it was
already May 25th and soil had not been dry enough
to plant all spring. I put row cleaner wheels on the
back of the planter to close the furrow and a little bit
of planting history was made. It is possible to till the
furrow walls with the seed firmly embedded in the
“V” at the bottom of the trench, and that is what the
Keeton Seed Firmer does.
Note: Not for use with John Deere XP series units
Right side
shows how
the RID-01 tire
allows the seed
trench to lift
and fracture.
17
Step 4: Close without surface
compaction
Martin Spading-Closing Wheels
Martin Spading-Closing wheels move soil toward
the seed at planting depth, while lifting and
fracturing the surface layer to achieve compactionfree closing of the seed trench in wet, hard, or sod
conditions. With soil firmed around the seed from
each side and the surface layer loosened, crops
emerge sooner and planting can be done at the
proper depth, even in wetter conditions, without
fear of crushed soil above the seed preventing
emergence.
Specific Advantages
• Speeds up warming of the row area
• Closing wheel arm pressure can be greatly
reduced
• Seed trench is closed in the most severe
conditions
• Seed depth does not have to be raised to
insure emergence
• Soil above the seed is loose and slightly
mounded allowing quicker emergence in a
compaction-free environment
Our Spading-Closing Wheels do not attempt to
close the seed trench by a crushing action from the
top down. The soil is wedged toward the seed from
either side at seeding depth by a pair of Martin
Row Cleaner wheels. The ends of the teeth have
full bevels cut on them. The beveled sides of the
teeth on each wheel are placed toward the row and
the narrow edge enters the soil first producing a
wedging action. As the teeth on the wheels rotate
up out of the soil, a slight lifting and crumbling
occurs in the surface layer. Th e area on either
side of the seed and immediately above it is not
fractured, and because of the shape and spacing of
the teeth on these wheels, wet soil does not bind
to them.
Martin Spading-Closing Wheels
• Sidewall compaction is greatly reduced
In the past we thought the only way to grow
no-till crops successfully was to wait until the
soil was dry enough for the planter’s smooth
closing wheels to crumble the soil over the seed.
Our long-standing struggle with the problem
prompted us to find a solution that we have
since patented. Customers around the country
are praising it.

Martin Spading-Closing Wheels
These closing wheels can be added to the White 5000 or
6000 series planters that have single closing tires. The
Martin Spading-Closing Wheels enhance closing of the
seed trench while the smooth wheel gently tamps the
surface.
Moist soil is moved toward the seed at seeding depth
even in wet, hard or sod conditions. In wet conditions,
the soil is prevented from forming a continuous ribbon
by the lifting action of the teeth as they rotate up out
of the soil.
Other benefits include:
• Closing wheel arm pressure can be greatly reduced

Step 5: Level row and seal air pockets
Twisted Drag Chain
Following behind the Spading-Closing Wheels our
Twisted Drag Chain helps to further crumble and
level the soil. This helps even out the rate of drying
and insures the soil does not dry past seed depth.
This is a low cost, low maintenance way to help
increase uniform emergence in the drier parts of the
field and is a must when using the spading closing
wheels in minimum till. By the way, some of our
customers still feel the need for some shallow tillage
in the spring and the spading closing wheels and
drag chain combination do an excellent job in that
situation.

Operating Suggestions
Successful planting in reduced tillage situations
requires the operator to have a better understanding of
how the planter operates than is needed for success in
conventionally tilled conditions.
For best results the planting units should always be
operated parallel to the soil line.
Low tongue height causes erratic control of unit
mounted attachments. In addition, down force and
closing wheel pressure are reduced if the planter units
are tilted forward.
Down force on the units may need to be increased
when planting in the following situations:
• Double crop/Sod/Mature green cover crops
• Drought/Planting directly on the old corn row
Selecting the Proper Depth Setting for Row Cleaners
For no-till operation the teeth should be set about ½"
above the bottom of the seed trench. Small changes
in depth of planting will not require an individual
adjustment of the row cleaner; however, the amount of
tooth engaged in the soil should not exceed 1½" unless
a furrow is needed to reach moisture.
For use in tilled soil the row cleaner should be raised
to a point where the teeth ends are at the soil line or
only slightly engaged. It is usually necessary to reduce
the down force to a minimum setting in this situation
because the planter sinks into the loose soil and may
cause the row cleaner to furrow out the soil. Hard clods
and root balls will be rolled aside. The cleaner’s teeth
will not be continuously rotating.
Depth adjustment in increments as small as ¼ " are
achieved by alternating the pin between the outside
holes in the receiver tube.

Use in Various Herbicide and Cover Situations
Martin Row Cleaners can be used to plant no-till
where pre-plant herbicides have been applied on
surface residue if rainfall occurs ahead of planting
to move the herbicide from the trash to the soil. For
most formulations this would require approximately
½" of rainfall. Th e cleaners should be operated at a
shallow depth to insure that soil is not moved out of
the row area.
Where herbicides have been incorporated into the
soil by tillage, the risk of losing weed control in the
row is substantial. Because the herbicide is combined
with clods and trash, some of which will be moved
aside, only the highest settings should be used. For
best results use a floating model with side treader
wheels.
Sods and cover crops that have been sprayed ahead of
time and are starting to decay will be easily moved by
the cleaner allowing sunlight to reach the soil.
Green covers will remain in place; however, the action
of the teeth raking through soil fractures the sidewall
and allows the seed trench to be closed easily.
In double crop planting the loose straw is raked aside
and attached stubble remains in place.
Soil temperature begins to rise within a few hours
after residue is moved on sunny days. Temperature
readings at mid-afternoon with residue moved and
bright sunlight usually register 5 to 7 degrees higher
than areas covered with heavy residue. Numerous
research studies during the past 40 years have shown
that bare soil loses temperature during the night and
must be warmed again by the sun each day.
