AFS Piedmont Chapter Members and Friends,
With the holidays upon us, I hope this correspondence finds everyone doing well and ready for
the winter season! The Piedmont Chapter is approaching the halfway point of our yearly meetings. Our
attendance has been great! Thank you and your companies for the strong support of our chapter.
The November meeting in Huntersville was well received and our attendance was outstanding.
Topics such as “Sands, Clays and Binders” brought experienced speakers as well as many years of
Foundry knowledge to the meeting. With a full day of technical sessions, it allowed everyone to take away
something from the sessions that could be applied back at their respective facility. It was a pleasure to
have the AFS National Representative, Stephanie Salmon out of Washington, DC as our dinner speaker.
She explained the efforts that AFS is doing to help fight congress for the metal casting industries. She
also shared what the metal casting industry can do to help the cause in Washington, DC. I would personally like to thank each and every speaker for their time and effort put forth to make this meeting a successful endeavor.
Our next meeting will be held in Athens, Georgia on January 21-22, 2015 and will entail “Keys to
Improving Your Furnace Refractory Lining Life”. Join us for a great day of technical sessions on improving
your refractory lining life for channel, pressure pour, and coreless furnaces. Speakers from United Refractories, Saveway, Allied Mineral Products, and Gradmatic Equipment will be discussing refractory, linings,
gunning, shot-creting, maintenance, monitoring systems, installation equipment, and more. We have a
private tour of the Terrapin Brewery scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. During dinner a representative
from FEF – Foundry Educational Foundation will be discussing how critical college foundry education
programs are for our industry.
On January 22, 2015 we have the pleasure of touring TICA (Toyota Industries Compressor Parts
America Co.) of Pendergrass, GA. It is one of several new foundries in the state of Georgia. It should be
an exciting look at production in a new foundry layout.
Please mark your calendars for our upcoming 2015 meetings which can be found in this
“Shakeout” addition. You will be receiving a flyer by e-mail that details the May outing; it will be sent out
soon.
The Piedmont Chapter is diverse with knowledge and strength; lets culminate our efforts to continue making the Piedmont Chapter one of the prominent AFS Chapters. Attendance brings support and
support brings knowledge!

development and use of a new tool that will really automate and streamline our Registration
process for our members, guests, and friends of the Piedmont Chapter who prefer to do things
digitally. We are using a system managed by EVENTZILLA©.
You’ll be receiving your regular Meeting Announcement emails from Mike Looby, and included in the email message will be a link for you to go directly to our Chapter Meeting Registration “event” site within Eventzilla©. It’s easy to use, and user friendly. At the end of the Registration process, you’ll have a choice of paying for your registration by credit card. Payments
are handled through PayPal™, so it’s also easy and very secure. If you’d rather pay by check,
you can select that option instead, and mail in your check.
If you’d like to continue sending your paper Registration Form and check by US Mail, you can
certainly continue to do that- no problem.

volunteer your time towards, then you are most welcome to let your interests be known!
Please don’t be shy or worse yet assume that you don’t have the skills or the time to do any volunteer SERVICE for your Chapter.
Make contact with any of your Chapter Officers or Directors listed on the front cover page of this newsletter
and let us know you are interested in stepping forward! It doesn’t take a lot of time, and it usually doesn’t cost
anything. This would even be a great way to participate in the activities of your Chapter even if you are unable
to attend the scheduled meetings throughout the year.
We have a multitude of activities this year and we are not ashamed to ask for HELP. We are hosting the Southeast Regional Conference, we have meeting arrangements to be cared for, we have a mission of Member Outreach to accomplish, etc. With the use of modern technologies, anyone can participate no matter where you
are!
“Volunteering” is much better than being “Assigned” to do something. It is much more rewarding!

“Progress through Education”

FEF Certification
In mid-September VT FIRE was visited by members of the Foundry Education Foundation (FEF) Board. This
was the first re-certification visit to the VT FIRE program since its inception. We are proud to announce under the leadership of Alan Druschitz and with the support of our industry, the VT FIRE program has been
awarded certification for the next five years. It should be noted this is a tremendous achievement as the
maximum allowable certification is six years. The review and certification by the FEF board has affirmed the
VT FIRE program is committed to excellence in foundry education.
One of the many benefits of FEF accreditation is an invitation to the annual FEF College Industry Conference
(CIC). The conference is structured to introduce students from FEF recognized schools to a wide range of
casting industry representatives in the hopes of facilitating recruitment. This will mark the 5 th consecutive
conference Virginia Tech has attended.
In addition to sending students to the conference, Virginia Tech took a turn at creating the commemorative
castings given to all participants. The FEF CIC Hokie Bird pictured below was created from a 3d printed model
and investment cast in grey iron. VT FIRE supplied 220 of these castings made by students and staff.

VT FIRE and Student Updates
The fall semester has come to a close since our last update. During this time students were busy finishing final
projects and studying for final exams. The VT FIRE students spent many of their recent weekends in the
foundry putting final touches on casting projects. I was fortunate enough to witness students performing everything from mold making to shake out under graduate supervision. We wish all of the students the best of
luck and a relaxing winter break.
As we have previously mentioned, the VT FIRE students have developed a taste for competition. We highlighted the first place win for the ASM “Domesday” Competition in the October shake out. For those of you subscribed to Advanced Materials & Processes, please check out page 66 for a photo of VT FIRE’s winning team.

The competitive streak continues as VT FIRE students set their sights on the upcoming spring semester. Students have voiced interest in everything from technical papers to casting competitions. We are very pleased
to announce a student team will be working with our chapter and a number of our member companies to take
on the TMS Bladesmithing Competition. The students will again use casting to make their mark on this completion, and we have high hopes for the team. The rules and regulations can be found at: http://www.tms.org/
