WPO San Francisco February 2013 Chapter Newsletter Issue 2 Vol. 1 Letter from the Chair Dear Fellow Members and Significant Others, Bonnie and I just returned from an outstanding retreat in Cabo with 22 couples in attendance. I want to thank Julie, our Chapter Admin, and Kathy Malaney, the Day Chair, for putting together an excellent retreat. It was a great time for all us to bond on a personal level with members and significant others in a relaxed and beautiful environment. Next year’s retreat will be in a different location and for those of you who did not attend this year, I highly recommend you don’t miss it next year. I am pleased to confirm the Officer Slate for the 2013/2014 year. Thanks to everyone who stepped up to be on the board and all of you who volunteered to be day chairs. For those of you who have not yet taken on a role in the chapter, I highly recommend you to do so. The more you give the more you will get back from our chapter. There are plenty of small jobs that can be taken on if you don’t have a lot of time. Chapter Chair – Laird Cagan (Going to GLC in Istanbul) Membership Chair – Anil Arora Education Chair – Scott Raskin Forum Chair – Paul Zuber Spousal Forum Chair – Bonnie Miller Treasurer – Emmalyn Shaw Network Chair – Linda Hothem YPO/WPO Liaison – Emerick Woods Youth and Family – Michele Jung Development Chair – Hank Miller (former Chapter Chair) In keeping with our theme of “Success to Significance”, I recently sent out an email to give you a chance at hosting an intern. Last summer, YPO Golden Gate piloted a summer Internship program for college students from disadvantaged Bay Area communities. Eight interns were placed at YPO companies for 8-12 weeks and the program was a resounding success for both the interns and our members. If you are interested in participating in this program, please contact Evan Marwell [email protected] or myself. August 30; Chapter Integration September 20: Our Political Future October 25: Success to Significance December 3: Holiday Party January 13: In the Boardroom with Chip Conley We have some great events coming up to finish out the rest of the year. Laird continues to strive to put together compelling reasons for us to come together. I would like to encourage all of those who we have not seen much to come and join us. We have a great chapter started and I would really like to get as close to 100% attendance at the balance of our events for this year. Please let me know if you have any suggestions of any way we can improve the chapter. Thanks for your continued support and I look forward to seeing everyone in March. Warm Regards Hank Chapter Officers Anil Arora: Membership Chair Laird Cagan: Education Chair We had an excellent launch with 47 total members: 30 recent graduating members from Golden Gate, 6 GG alumni and 11 graduating members from SF Bay. Thanks to all of you for your commitment and support of our new chapter! I am just back, fully rejuvenated from a fantastic chapter retreat at Esperanza. It was a great bonding experience for the many couples who attended. I truly feel like we are one, integrated chapter now. We are have another 7 members who graduate from Golden Gate and SF Bay at the end of this fiscal year who may potentially join our WPO San Francisco Chapter next year and have also received interest from various YPO and WPO members who have relocated to the Bay area. As such, we hope to get your perspective on the optimal member size for the chapter in the next year while preserving the intimacy and connectivity we are striving for. Our preliminary assessment is to grow the chapter gradually (increase our limit by 5-10 members) next year but would appreciate your feedback on this important decision Best, A2 We are more than half way thru the year and already there are great memories: the launch party at Hank’s house in August; the joint chapter event with GG and SF Bay at the Family Farm with Supreme Court Justice Breyer and former Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, Michael Boskin debating former California Treasurer, Steve Westly; an integration event with Jim Dethmer at the beautiful new Presidio building; a spouse event at Laura Lauder’s house with the Meyers/Briggs test; our holiday party at the spectacular estate of Kelly Porter with Lynne Twist talking about the Soul of Money and her quest to eliminate poverty; and finally the fabulous retreat in Cabo. I am pleased to have received so much positive feedback so far and am thrilled with the strength of the chapter already. We still have more great events planned. We have another joint chapter event with WPO NorCal and SF Bay at the brand new SF Jazz with a panel of Social Entrepreneurs on March 13th; our first, joint chapter poker night on March 22 (limited to 5 people from each chapter); the always popular Dine-around on April 18th; GG’s graduation/reunion, dinner/dancing event on Friday, May 17, 7-11pm in Los Altos Hills (all GG grads and SF Bay grads are invited); the first annual YPO/WPO Bay Area golf event on May 22 at Palo Alto Hills; and our final event scheduled for May 30th. Scott Raskin, our in-coming Ed Chair, was with me in Esperanza and we had the opportunity to start planning for next year. We discussed a number of great ideas in Cabo while sipping margaritas. We will carry our theme of Success to Significance forward and hope to create another great program that enriches our lives and builds strong, lasting relationships. It has been my pleasure to lead Education this year which has given me the opportunity to interact with many of you on a deeper level. I look forward to building deep, longlasting relationships with you all. As always, if you have any feedback, suggestions for great events or an interest in being Day Chair, please let me know. I want everyone to have a great experience at WPO San Francisco. Success to Significance Chapter Officers Danny Grossman: Treasurer Paul Zuber: Forum Chair The Treasurer’s report for the first six months of fiscal year 2012-13 is a tale of bad news and good news. The bad news is that we overspent a bit in the first 6 months. The good news is that the increased expense was mostly in the area of our excellent Education programs, the member benefit where we should be investing heavily. Fortunately we have kept officers’ salaries to a minimum (below zero the last time I checked!). Revenue streams for the full year are annual dues, investments from Golden Gate and SF Bay YPO chapters and a one-time YPO International subvention. Our expenses through the first six months were $95,000. Our forums continue to grow both in terms of number of groups, as well as participants. We now have 6 forums encompassing 31 members. Fifteen WPO SF members are not currently participating in forum but plan to re-enter in the spring. If you have a changed status and are currently looking to join a forum, please contact me directly. Moderator training is also available for those seeking to be trained, or have their skills refreshed. Through the YPO/WPO International organization, all forums have access to several new programs. These include Jumpstart, which is a program designed to help those members starting new forums, or participating in recently formed forums, Get Abstract, which is a series of discussion and exercise guides that provides Forums with “stages of life” topics for 90minute and 150-minute Forum sessions, and can be adapted for retreats, and the 360° Forum experience, which was developed to give Forum members a unique opportunity to share and receive feedback on their fellow Forum members, within the context of their Forum experience. Scott Raskin: Chapter Networks Officer Dear fellow chapter mates, First off, it's time to check out the New Networks and Groups tab on the Exchange. You may have noticed the new Networks & Groups platform on the MyYpo web site: www.myypo.org. Take advantage of the upgraded features to reach out and connect with your Network friends. Those of you who were receiving RSS feeds on MyYPO will need to re-subscribe to them on the Exchange. If you choose to follow a Group or Network discussion, they will receive discussion posts in real time, regardless of their notification settings. Please read to get more information on Email Digest and your Network settings. Please check out and discover the benefits offered on the new platform and enjoy the value that connecting through Networks and Groups can offer. Secondly, please check out some of the upcoming network events that Julie post on the wposf.com website and include in a separate e-mail. Too many to list! See you soon! Scott Spouse & Family Chairs Holly O’Dea: Spouse Forum Chair We are thrilled to announce that we have formed two spouse forums in our chapter which began in January. We are off to a great start and hope to add a working spouse/significant other forum in September. Many of you have expressed an interest in joining a spouse forum if not now, in the future. If you are considering joining a forum and have not had Forum Fundamentals or Moderator training, we will be offering training in the spring. Training is an excellent way to get a taste of what forum is all about and see if you are ready to make the commitment of joining your very own personal board of directors. If you are interested in learning more about forum, please feel free to contact Holly O’Dea, Spouse Forum Coordinator, at [email protected]. Kathy Malaney: Family and Spouse Coordinator Please SAVE THE DATE! YLAB San Francisco – Monday, October 14, 2013 (Columbus Day) YLAB (Youth Lab) is a program that is growing within the ranks of YPO/WPO that takes our children behind the scenes of various business for a ‘taste of business” or an “in-the-boardroom” experience for teens or young adults. This opportunity has received high marks from other chapters, so we are hosting our first YLAB this fall in a joint event with Golden Gate. Teens ages 13 to 19 are invited to behind the scenes tours and boardroom chats with 3 to 4 of our member’s or friend’s companies. We will meet in San Francisco Monday morning, October 14, 2013 at a centrally located spot. From there, teens will be escorted by coach and chaperone to each of the stops. The day will conclude at 5:00. There will be an opportunity for those who choose to stay to enjoy a light dinner together. Seats will be limited to the first 30 RSVPs. Spouse Forums Spouse Only Events Y Lab Family Events Community Service We would like to choose companies that would interest the kids such as, but not limited to, a sports team, food company, fashion, medical, computer games, or technology. We are seeking companies to host, so please let us know if you would be willing to host a visit to your company for 1.5-2 hours or if you can help arrange a visit to company that would be interesting to this teenage age group. We are focused on companies in San Francisco, but are open to ideas outside SF as well. We are eager to get these scheduled and your help would be greatly appreciated! If you are interested please contact Ruth Housenbold at [email protected] (for all YPO GG) and Kathy Malaney at [email protected] (for all WPO SF) to reserve a place for your teen. Company details and a specific itinerary will be published in September. Success to Significance Community/Connection was paramount ● High involvement that comes from desire and not from a rule around attendance ● People in the chapter want to spend time with each and with each other’s families ● Justice: give back, social justice ● Hearth: a place to come home to where it was warm and comforting ● Journey: a ship with a destination yet unknown, but inspiring and inviting in its challenge ● Bigger than one person ● Shift from “me-centric” to “others-centric” (More Through me, rather than To Me or even By Me) ● People will show up to be part of a community not just to come to events ● The focus will be community and not events ● Authenticity and openness will characterize our relationships (Similar to what was experienced on Friday night at Carmel Valley Ranch) 2013 Events Calendar March 13, 2013 March 22, 2013 April 18, 2013 May 17, 2013 May 22, 2013 May 30, 2013 *8am - 7pm 6pm - 9pm 6pm - 10pm 7pm - 11pm 1pm - 7pm *8am - 7pm Social Entrepreneurs Poker Night with Annie Duke Dine-Around YPO GG Graduation YPO–WPO Annual Golf Tournament Final Great Event SF Jazz – San Francisco San Francisco Member's Homes Los Altos Hills Palo Alto Hills TBD * Includes time for Forums to meet Esperanza Retreat - Cabo San Lucas, Mexico We hope that everything you expected on your trip to Cabo was fulfilled! The setting at the Esperanza was gorgeous as we sat by the infinity pool watching the breaching whales in the distance. We were so lucky to get unseasonably warm weather. We had a warm Friday evening for our Mexican dinner serenaded by 3 Mexican guitarists as we ate. What really made the evening special was the friendship that we all shared around the beach fire roasting marshmallows. I believe we all realized that evening that we made the right choice in creating this chapter. You could feel the love! On Saturday, after workouts for some, and a hearty breakfast for others, we headed to the spa for our treatments. The deep massages were delightful and put us into a state of bliss as we exited from our rooms with hair all disheveled to our group hanging out in their robes drinking wine and detoxing to some concoction of healthy ginger, basil, lemon drinks. There’s no better way to get to know a group than to be stripped of makeup and street clothes! Saturday evening we were donned with fedora’s on our heads, flowers in our hair, sarongs on the waist and cigars in our shirt pockets (who knew that we had a fashionista amongst us like John Kinney who could creatively costume himself with the help of the housekeeping staff?) as we dined on the patio overlooking the ocean for a delicious Latino dinner and wild salsa dancing lessons. (Who knew that Holly and Pat O'Dea were able to move like that on the dance floor??) The highlight was trying to keep up with our instructors who really knew how to ‘shake it like a salt shaker!” If you weren’t able to join us this year, please do consider the next trip we all take together as a chapter. It’s a wonderful bonding time but if you need to take some space for yourself, no one takes offense. We all came home healthy and happy and no one got fried (from the sun or HOT tub). Thank you so much Sherry Cagan for taking so many pictures during the weekend! I hope we will all be able to find a way to enjoy them as well. And lastly, but most important, is a huge thank you to Julie Chenard who spent numerous hours planning and scheming to make sure we had all the special touches for each day! Our transportation was all lined up to and from the airport; we were greeted with a welcome gift in our rooms; and surprised with salsa accessories on our beds! Not to mention all the behind the scenes logistics. Thank you! Julie Kathy Malaney
