Dear Friend, I would like to invite you to become a part of my vision for The Rock Asylum Foundation. Rock Asylum is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating truly unique learning experiences for elementary age students through the medium of music. I believe that through original music, both recorded and live, we can engage students and heighten retention and understanding of the Common Core Standards. My goal is to put the EDGE in education. It is my mission, and therefore the mission of this program, to write songs creating a truly original catalog of music, targeting academic curricula and social issues that many students in today’s educational atmosphere find challenging, combining education and entertainment in a way that speaks to children. As part of the platform for this mission, concerts will be donated to schools with the purpose of inspiring students to participate in learning songs that highlight and enhance their academic studies. By actively engaging the whole child, I believe that they are inspired to pursue academic and personal success, which in turn produces creative, well- rounded individuals. We aim to use rock music as a vital educational and motivational tool. As it is my mission to see this project come to fruition. Our concerts and songs for children have consistently received high praise from principals, teachers, and parents for actively engaging the children and exposing them to educational content in a new and exciting way. We have completed our first song Scientific Method and created a music video for ir as well. This is the first of many songs that will eventually makle up our “Rocklopedia.” You can see the video at http://rockasylum.org/audio&video/musicvideos.html. In a Daily News article published on November 3, 2011, Jacob E. Osterhaut wrote about a Rock Asylum performance at P.S. 119 in Brooklyn, where students were quoted thanking Paulie for his original song ‘Scientific Method’. Ten year old Jonathan Condell was quoted as saying “I like the song because it helps me remember all the steps.” Another student Kyron Greene remarked, “They made songs on what we are learning.” This demonstrates the need for our mission, to bring music into other academic areas, helping children learn in creative and dynamic ways. On April 27th 2012, NY1, a major NYC news channel, did a story on Rock Asylum and named me NYer Of The Week! I was extremely honored, but more importantly I was happy to know that millions of people were able to see what we are doing and how it’s working. Needless to say our website views skyrocketed and we gained a lot of new supporters. You can view the piece at http://rockasylum.org/news/press.html Paulie Z * [email protected] * www.rockasylum.org Rock Asylum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As a former public school teacher, I feel passionate about the need to connect education and inspiration in our schools, and I’ve witnessed the magic that happens when learning is combined with music. Your contribution will go toward helping me to realize my vision of taking this inspiring “edu-tainment” experience on the road, reaching students across the country. Please review the enclosed proposal of how you can become a part of our next exciting event that will raise funds and awareness for Rock Asylum. Previous sponsors have received tremendous exposure at our past events and our Oct 12th event where we honor Dee Snider and bring together the music and entertainment industry for a great cause will be even more prestigious. I would be honored to have you on this journey with me. But more importantly, the countless children whose lives you would be directly affecting in a significant and positive way are the ones you would be honoring the most. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Paulie Z Founder / President of Rock Asylum Foundation Paulie Z * [email protected] * www.rockasylum.org Rock Asylum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Modern educators know the importance of educating the whole child. By teaching students their academic disciplines through the performing arts, you develop a class of students able to think not just quantitatively, but qualitatively. All too often, music and arts programs are the first to be reduced or summarily eliminated from school budgets. As “teaching to the test” has sadly become more the status quo of education, it is the children of low socio-economic communities who suffer most when budgeting for that paradigm. It is a disservice to our youth to deprive them of the inspiration, educational opportunity, and joy the gift of live music can bring. Rock Asylum’s mission is to bring that gift with a positive, educational message to students in schools where live music programs do not exist or have been cut. At P.S. 119, the first school to receive a free Rock Asylum concert, dozens of students credited the experience with inspiring them to want to learn to play an instrument and/or write song lyrics of their own. As we’ve seen firsthand, children are motivated to learn in different ways. Their individuality flourishes through creativity, and their creativity in turn engages the whole of the student, jump-starting their love of learning. Through the Rock Asylum Foundation, we intend to reach as many students as possible, especially those whose individuality has not been accounted for by too broad a system, incapable in scope of addressing the individual needs students with different learning styles. Our goal is to put the EDGE in education. And this is what we do. A Rock Asylum performance is more than just a concert, it is an interactive experience between the musicians and the students. It encourages student participation through active listening, higher order questioning, and following verbal directions for activating imaginations through storytelling. This project is worth investing in as a parent, music fan, believer in music education, child advocate, educator, or anyone who envisions a future full of creative, inspired, well rounded adults. Paulie Z * [email protected] * www.rockasylum.org Rock Asylum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WHO ARE WE? Paulie Z, a professional musician and former teacher, founded Rock Asylum. Along with his band, ZO2, Paulie has toured with bands such as KISS, Poison, Twisted Sister, Stone Temple Pilots, and Alice Cooper. By day, he doubles as a children’s entertainer with his other band, the Z Brothers, and has been working with children from ages ten and under for over a decade. As he progressed in his career, Paulie began noticing a significant lack of inspiration and motivation with the students he came across in regard to their schoolwork. He also noticed the same students that struggled with their academics had no problem remembering the lyrics to their favorite songs. The questions Paulie asked himself were, “What would happen if we could write modern rock style songs that were composed specifically for students’ academics? What if we supplemented their traditional lesson plans with radio standard rock music? How much cooler would learning be if Bon Jovi wrote a song about how the three branches of government functioned?” We ourselves might better understand how that works today. Paulie found a bunch of like-minded people who share that same vision, of a future where every lesson plan will have a corresponding rock song, and learning of any kind is not limited to merely information, but experience. We personally would have paid a lot more attention in Chemistry if the Beastie Boys played “Sounds of Science” for us in person. Many people share a vision of using music to help kids do better in their academics. People who feel music is not expendable or recreational. People who know that music, when utilized properly, can be a powerful tool to unlock the potential to do well in ALL subjects. These are the people who make up the creative team of Rock Asylum! Paulie Z * [email protected] * www.rockasylum.org Rock Asylum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WHAT WERE SOME HIGHLIGHTS FROM PAST EVENTS? There have been three smaller scale fundraising events so far and all of them were slam packed. There were fashion shows, celebrity catering, and the infamous “purple carpet”. Some of the celebrity guests that walked the carpet were Dee Snider (Twisted Sister, A&E series “Growing Up Twisted”) and the Snider family, Marky Ramone (The Ramones), Bill Cowher (legendary NFL coach), Warren Sapp (ex-NFL player), Steve Augeri (Journey), Constantine Maroulis (American Idol, Rock of Ages), players from The NY Rangers hockey team and many more. At our fall 2011 event Constantine Maroulis and Steve Augeri joined ZO2 on stage for a stellar rendition of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” which had the crowd roaring with excitement. Recently we held our first annual Spring Benefit Kids Rock Concert where parents could come with their kids and experience a full on rock show with all proceeds going to the foundation. The place was packeds with exuberant wide-eyed children from ages 5-10 smiling ear to ear with fists in the air. They rocked to all the original songs as well as some cover songs and of course the Scientific Method. HOW MANY EVENTS WILL THERE BE? We will host two fundraisers each year: one in the spring and one in the fall. The spring concert will be for children and their families and the fall concert will be geared towards adults. Paulie Z and The Rock Asylum Band will perform at both events with a set tailored to their audience. In addition to live music, both events will have the infamous “purple carpet” step-and-repeat, catering by celebrity chefs, auctions, gift bags and more. The money raised will cover operational and concert costs and contribute to developing a thriving non-profit organization that serves and inspires tens of thousands of children each year. The goal is to eventually do a national Rock Asylum tour annually so we can donate free concerts to schools in as many cities as possible. Future plans include bringing in other artists to perform concerts in schools. Paulie Z * [email protected] * www.rockasylum.org Rock Asylum Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
