OF BARBECUE
MOBILE, AL SELECTED FOR
2013 NBBQA CONFERENCE
I had the pleasure in San Diego to
announce that the 2013 NBBQA
Conference and Tradeshow will be
held at the Renaissance Riverview
Hotel in downtown Mobile, AL in
February of next year. This decision
was made by the board of directors
early last month and was chosen
based on a huge list of criteria that
was more than met by the hotel. This
is going to be a great location for us!
We are currently working to make
this the biggest show to date as we
keep members and sponsors informed like never before and try
to enhance the conference
in all areas.
Your NBBQA board had several strategic planning meetings
while in San Diego and plans of actions were put into place
to help grow this association. I can tell you one of our main
focuses will be helping members become more aware of their
benefits and assisting them in getting the most out of their
membership. I encourage you to become more active with
NBBQA as we strive to reach the goals we have set in place.
Until next month... keep it smokin’
2012 CONFERENCE FULL OF
BOLD FLAVORS & BRIGHT IDEAS
The National Barbecue Association concluded a very successful conference last month in
San Diego, CA. “BBQ Coast to Coast” was this year’s theme — one that definitely rang true as
we descended on California for the first time in conference history. Attendees from all over
the country were on hand for food, fun, friendship, and first-rate educational sessions.
It was a rare opportunity to share our passion and learn more about what unites us and
our industry.
The events and sessions were a big hit, from the sold-out bus tour to the keynote speech by
John Markus, executive producer for “BBQ Pitmasters.” As usual, the Awards of Excellence
held attendees in suspense as the industry recognized its best and brightest in several
categories. Congratulations to all the winners!
The highlight of the convention was the Old Fashioned BBQ Bash, a public celebration with
lots of activities, including the People’s Choice Awards, where attendees cast votes for their
favorite pulled pork, chicken and BBQ sauce. Thanks to all the teams who participated.
The conference concluded with the annual Caterer’s Showcase and Auction. When Pigs
Fly Catering, Robin’s Woodfire BBQ & Grill, and Great American Barbecue prepared some
incredible offerings for showcase attendees. And NBBQA past-president Joe Oaster served
as auctioneer, whipping the crowd into a bidding frenzy over several incredible items.
A huge thank you goes out to our Title sponsor, Sam’s Club and all our other supporters,
including Smithfield Packing Co., our Diamond sponsor.

Winning Entries Represent The Best In Barbecue
The National Barbecue Association has announced the winners of the 2012 NBBQA Awards of Excellence. The annual competition
recognizes the very best barbecue products in a number of industry categories. The winning entries were announced on
February 23 during the Awards of Excellence ceremony at the 2012 NBBQA National Conference in San Diego, California.
This was a record year for the Awards of Excellence as winners were selected from over 350 submissions from across the country.
Judging was conducted under the independent direction of the Rend Lake Culinary Arts School in Ina, Illinois. Pirate Jonny’s, Scott’s Pig Roast, Woody’s Bar-B-Q
