About Wines with clear signature. As stated by our maxim we are seeking uniqueness, distinctiveness as well as complexity and a close contact to nature in our wines Explore the world of our wines! The Kamptal, one of Austrias most famous wine regions, is the ultimate place to grow Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. The great variety of soils enables us to show the unique character of every single vineyard in our wines and therefore is our core strength. Austria - Kamptal - Straß im Straßertale - Allram - Grüner Veltliner – great wine Winery In the vineyards we lay the foundation for our wines. The Allram estate is situated in the heart of the wine-growing area Kamptal in the picturesque place Straß im Straßertale. The winery belongs to those that succeeded in establishing themselves on the top of the Austrian viticulture through decades of consequent high quality work. In 1992 Michaela Hass-Allram took over her parents’ business and since then operated the winery together with her husband Erich Haas. A modern basement-facility over three floors, the perfectly succeeded integration of the old wooden barrel cellar and the traditional wine press house as tasting- and showroom create a perfect balance between yesterday and tomorrow. Michaela and Erich are particularly proud of the facility at Zöbinger Heiligenstein that was re-cultivated with a lot of sensitiveness after 30 years of standstill. The old stone terraces could have been maintained. The love and passion of the wine growers for their job allow the arouse of marvellous, tight wines with distinctive varietal character. Grüner Veltliner Gaisberg, Riesling Heiligenstein, Grauburgunder and Chardonnay are internationally renowned and admired – not least because of the committed merchandising of the skilled economist Michaela. Yearly national and international awards approve the wine growers in their work. Family Strong company within the family brings harmony in our wines. In every situation in life the best results are obtained through caring. This is especially true when it comes to the vine. To give the vine the optimum conditions in which to excel, Erich Haas and his son Lorenz share responsibilities in the vineyard and the cellar. Michaela Haas-Allram looks after the commercial side of the business and the family. The creative element of the family belongs to daughter Magdalena. Michaelas father Walter Allram is still out in the vineyard and knows every single vine, even the oldest ones. This combined knowledge of three generations shows the harmony within the family which is the root of a forward-looking philosophy. Philosophy Our philosophy is reflected by the characteristic of the wines. Our overall mission is the production of organic, high quality products by combining the knowledge of generations and using state-of-theart technology. Therefore we need to give the utmost care to each vine. In the cellar we take a back seat and act as a gentle facilitator. What we seek is to craft wines that reflect the particular vintage, the terroir and the special microclimate of the Kamptal - to ensure that the subtle nuances of each single vineyard can be expressed and savoured in their multi-layered uniqueness. This is driven from a responsibility not only towards our family, but also towards nature, our history and the wine itself. The quality of our vineyards and vines are our core strength, but this is supplemented by a deep understanding born out of tradition, intuition and an open approach towards the world we live in. Erste Lage The vineyard makes the difference. 1992 the ‚Association of Traditional Wineries Austria’ was founded with the ambitious goal to achieve at some stage a vineyard classification in the Danube area. In these days the quality of a wine was defined by the sugar content in the must. But it was discussed by the growers, that there is little wisdom involved in this idea. Everyone knows that you can make a great wine only out of a great vineyard. So the growers started to occupy themselves and observe their vineyards for the past twenty years before they started the classification process. Due to the DAC development in Austria the idea of the origin of wine is now newly defined, but at the moment the concept of single vineyards is not included in the concept. As being the biggest supporter for the DAC concept the association is trying to offer a concluding concept for the future of the DAC development. It was a historical moment for the association when the members were presenting in May 2010 after 20 years52 vineyards which were classified as ‘Erste Lage’ (premier cru). On the labels and in catalogs the ‘Erste Lage’ wines are marked by the sign. The year of 2010 is marking the beginning of a classification process that is expected to last for at least another 20 to 30 years. In the future the 23 members of the association will try to include also other growers to participate in the classification process. It is acknowledged that the classification should be carried out by as many members as possible before the classification will be brought to a legal level. The logo which is signifying the ‚Erste Lage’ status of a single vineyard is protected by copyright and can only be used by the members of the association. As the classification is based on the DAC regulation, only Grüner Veltliner and Riesling can carry the ‘Erste Lage’ sign. Allram's Erste Lagen: Our estate cultivates vineyards in the "Este Lage" Heiligenstein and Gaisberg The sites Great wines have their origin in the vineyard. We take special care of the vines, with short pruning, intensive canopy management, strict thinning out and rigorous selecting before and during harvest. By hand picking each vineyard several times during harvest, we can guarantee that only grapes with the highest physiological maturity are selected. A crucial aspect in wine production is the “Terroir” the interaction between microclimate, soil and the site, combined with the cultivation and the care taken throughout the whole process. Based on our experience and the detailed knowledge of each and every vineyard, it allows us to emphasise the distinct character of the grape variety. Heiligenstein At the Kamptal's most famous site, the Heiligenstein, our Riesling vineyards are planted, facing towards the south. The site accounts to the oldest geological formations within the Region with 270 million years (Perm). A combination of primeval rock which had pushed through the surrounding area and the top soil consisting of weathered crystalline rock, volcanic and desert sands provide a fine mixture of minerals to the vines and, in addition, accumulate heat till long. Between the vines here the flora and fauna is like in southern/mediterranean regions. At the preserved stone terraces a combination out of soil, exposure, microclimate and care through the vintner creates an authentic terroir Riesling. Gaisberg Both hills, Gaisberg and Heiligenstein, are facing south towards the plain of the joining rivers Kamp and Danube, their vineyards are all terraced, and similar ecological conditions prevail. The difference you will find when you go into deep. The terroir of the Gaisberg is Gföhler gneiss with vertical micaschist structures. The soil is rougher and poorer than on the Heiligenstein. A geological condition, which makes it a perfect place to grow Riesling. At the bottom part of the hill, this special type of soil is covered by a thin layer of löss. That’s where we have planted our Grüner Veltliner and St. Laurent vineyards, which thrive exceptional quality year by year. Wechselberg On the easterly border of the Straßertal valley the Wechselberg raises facing towards the south. The soils are slate, left over from the crystalline of the Bohemian Massif. Due to the exposure this site receives intensive sunshine all day long. The altitude of the Wechselberg creates a special microclimate, where a gentle breeze cools down the hot summer air in the evening. This temperature variation ensures an excellent development of flavours in the grapes. Hasel The soil is a result of the dry and cold climate of the Ice Age. Due to the effect of glaciers (high pressure), quartz, limestone, mica and clay particles were pulverized. These loess soils retain deep reservoirs of moisture and hardly suffer out of drought. The heart of this vineyard is the Mittelhasel, with a gentle incline to the south; it is where our vineyards are located. As this location has always produced above-average quality, the wine growers of long ago used to say; “A wine vintner without any Hasel will never get a wife”. It is here where the strongest, thickest vines thrive - very ripe Grüner Veltliner, Grauburgunder and Chardonnay. Wines with a harmonious combination of strength, body, characteristic aromas and elegance are the result. Soil and climate Old and new, hot and cold - that fits together Every wine is characterized by the interplay of climate & soil in its region and in particular by the single vineyard. These elements combined help our wines to develop their unmistakable character. climate Two climatic zones touch each other in the the Kamptal: The dry and hot Pannonia climate with the rough and cool winds of the north-western Waldviertel. This clash creates interplay between hot days and cool nights which results in fine, delicate aromatics and retained naturally vibrant acidity in the grapes. This effect is intensified by the topography of the Kamptal, which opens towards the warm Danube valley and closes towards the north. The result of this phenomenon are unique wines. The Kamptal itself reminds one at the Burgundy where similar climatic conditions prevail. Straß lies along the same latitude as Chablis. soil In the Kamptal you will find three types of soil: The "Gföhler Gneis", the primary rock is one of them. The hills of the Kamptal are made of this rock. Brown earth is bedded on it. Partly meters thick, partly merely 20 centimetres thin. On the other hand there is loess. During the ice ages dust was blown into the Kamptal and has compressed itself into fertile soil. And finally there is the clay soil which has settled directly on the sores of the river as well as volcanic elements, as on the highly regarded Heiligenstein. It provides our Grüner Veltliner with an unmistakable spiciness as well as a distinct and clear bouquet, and the Riesling with power and smooth body. This great diversity of soils creats an ideal biotope for our varieties. It provides our Rieslings with minerality and finesse, and the Grüner Veltliner with unmistakable spiciness as well as a distinct and clear bouquet. Kamptal - millions of years young The Kamptal belongs to Europe’s oldest geological and historical regions, with a earth history of one billion years and human being for 30 000 years. Kamptal gets its name from the river Kamp, which flows directly through it, and is also home of famous wine villages as Langenlois, Straß im Straßertale, Zöbing and many more. With a vineyard area of 3,802 hectares, Kamptal is one of the most successful wine regions in Austria, and boasts a high proportion of outstanding, quality wine producers. Culture and tourism also play a significant role. "Districtus Austriae Controllatus" - The controlled origin stand for high quality wine The Kamptal DAC defines wines made from Grüner Veltliner or Riesling in two styles, a classic-styled medium-bodied wine KAMPTAL DAC and a rich, elegant dry KAMPTAL DAC RESERVE style. The distinctiveness of the wines is not self-evident. Even though climate and soil make a significant contribution, still a lot of aptitude, sensitiveness and love towards the vine is necessary to achieve the utmost quality in the wine. The mission of the regional wine board is to define this as a standard for the region. A core issue of the board is to establish a regional wine-type with clear profile of the Kamptal. more information: www.austrianwine.com Lower Austria Great wines along the Danube. Lower Austria is the countries largest region growing high-quality vines. It combines the diverse potential of different winery styles with indigenous rarities as well as international grape varieties, thus creating wines beyond compare. Three Climates, One Country There are eight different wine growing regions to be found in lower Austria, with evocative names such as Wachau, Kamptal and Carnuntum. They can be roughly divided into the following three climatic areas: the ‘Weinviertel’ in the North the ‘Donauraum’ to the west of Vienna and Pannonian lower Austria in the Southeast The famous ‘Weinviertel’ In 2003 the ‘Weinviertel’ hit the headlines when it decided to market its pride and joy, the piquant Grüner Veltliner, under the name of ‘Weinviertel DAC’. Since that time the term has been synonymous with a guarantee of finding the aromatic spiciness of a vibrant Veltliner within each bottle. A diverse selection of fresh white wines, fruity reds and even dessert wine specialties available from the ‘Weinviertel’ can be found under the Designation of Origin of lower Austria. Along the Danube, from Melk in the west downstream to Klosterneuburg to the east, passing the Kamp, Traisen and Krems tributaries, are picturesque wine villages lined like pearls on a necklace.Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are the flaghship wines of this area with both varieties displaying their regional typicity also in Kremstal DAC, Kamptal DAC and Traisental DAC. The steep primary rock sites of the Wachau evolve into loess terraces towards the eastern part of the adjacent Kremstal, which and also form the character of the wines in parts of Traisental and Kamptal, but particularly in Wagram, where Roter Veltliner has become another regional asset alongside Grüner Veltliner. In Kamptal, the wines contain a distinctive mineral touch, particularly on the Heiligenstein, with its volcanic soil structure. In this part of Niederösterreich, the range of wines are rounded off with specialities like the Weißburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Chardonnay as well as a select range of elegant red wines. Pannonia refers to the region situated south and east of Vienna, and is home to some of Austria's most outstanding red wines. Distribution Success through friendship.
