Laurel-Beltsville Senior Activity Center: BOOK CLUB
Fall 2015 Book Club
Club meets 2nd and 4th Fridays from 2-4pm
September-The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis. This novel is an
exploration of race, gender, and struggle. It is the story of an African-American woman
named Hattie. The author uses Hattie’s life and the lives of her children to illuminate “The
Great Migration” of Southern black people to the North. We meet Hattie at age 17—a new
wife and young mother up from Georgia now living in Philadelphia. We bid farewell to her at
age 71, and at the end, when she’s a grandmother living in New Jersey.
October-The Double by George Pelecanos. The author, best known as the lead writer
and sometime producer of the HBO celebrated series, The Wire, writes a crime story set in
Washington, D.C. and nearby Prince George’s County. The protagonist, investigator Spero
Lucas is a former marine who fought in Iraq. His job seems simple enough: retrieve a valuable painting, “The Double” that Grace Kinkaid’s ex-boyfriend stole from her. She wants more.
She wants Lucas to find the men who humiliated her—a violent career criminal with a small
gang of brutal thugs at his beck and call.
November- A Soft Place to Land by Susan Rebecca White. This is a novel of family
loss and sisterly redemption. For more than ten years, Naomi and Phil Harrison enjoyed a
marriage of heady romance tempered only by the needs of their children. But on a vacation
alone, the couple perishes in a flight over the Grand Canyon. After the funeral, their daughters, Ruthie and Julia are shocked by the provisions in their will, not the least of which, is that
they are to be separated. Spanning nearly two decades, the sisters’ journeys take them from
their familiar home in Atlanta to sophisticated bohemian San Francisco, a mountain town in
Virginia, the campus of Berkeley, and lofts in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
