Message
By Veronica Kosich,
Sables President
S
ables as a membership group within
Safari Club International has oversight
responsibilities of SCI Foundation education
programs. Sables raise funds in support of
those programs. All funds raised by Sables
are dedicated to education programs. Sables
donors enjoy the tax deduction benefit
through the SCI Foundation – a 501( c ) 3
organization.
Join Sables as a member, a donor and/or
volunteer. Membership dues go directly to
education programs as do all donations.
There is opportunity to volunteer on
committees that help guide program
implementation.
With your support, we can continue to
make a difference through educating current
and next generations about the important
role of hunting in conservation.
The Annual Luncheon Show & Auction is
our biggest fund raiser. Come join the fun
and help raise money for education.
Throughout the year we raise funds through
special requests, sweepstakes and donations
from generous individuals. We write grants
requesting financial support from
organizations like the Hunter Legacy 100
Fund that has provided generous support for
education programs. ©
Thank you for supporting Sables
Women of SCI Events
S
ables have had many requests to host
events or activities at convention and
other times of the year that have focus on
things women like to do. Sables are taking
the lead to host a welcome event for ladies
at the 2016 Convention. It is Thursday,
February 4, 2016 from 1 – 2:30 p.m. There
is no entrance fee. Universal Sportsman,
Legends Ranch of Michigan and Prois
Hunting are the first to become sponsors of
the “Ladies Welcome” event.
It will be a time for women of SCI (i.e.
spouses, guests, SCI chapter and national
members) to meet new people and network.
Champagne and light hors d’oeuvres will be
2
SABLES
served. Anyone interested in attending please
contact the SCIF Education Department. We
want to have an estimated number of
attendees as we order food and beverages.
The next event with a focus on women is
being held at the American Wilderness
Leadership School (AWLS) near Jackson,
Wyoming July 15 – 19, 2016. Networking,
recreation activities and a field trip to Jackson
are part of the plan for up to 40 women.
Sables and AWLS will provide food, lodging
and ground transportation to and from the
Jackson airport. Arrive on Friday and
depart on Monday for a full weekend of
fun and activity. ©

Planning
the Future
of Education
Programs
S
ables officers, directors, electors, district
electors and committee chairs gathered
after the 2015 SCI August Board meeting to
participate in a strategic planning process. The
process included a review of measured
impacts of existing programs, looking at what
was accomplished, what needs more attention,
and thinking a few years ahead in time.
There are many successes in the programs.
The Hunter Legacy 100 Fund and Sables
Dream Hunt auction proceeds provided
sponsorships for many teachers to attend.
Many SCI Chapters sponsored teachers from
their communities. There was discussion
related to what Sables can do to help chapter
leaders to understand the value of
sponsoring educators from their
communities to AWLS.
Sables, in cooperation with the SCI
Foundation Board, will be establishing an
endowment for AWLS where individuals can
make donations to AWLS that give support
long into the future. Sables requested
information that can help them to determine
whether to add a college workshop and/or
another high school workshop to AWLS
programs. It was decided mini-AWLS
programs will be developed in Arizona and
California allowing AWLS programs where
educators who are unable to travel to Jackson
can be introduced to conservation education
and how they can incorporate conservation
lessons in what they already teach.

SABLES
A cabin renovation project is identified in
updating or replacing the very oldest cabins
at AWLS. Sandra Sadler and Audrey
Murtland are co-chairs leading the design
and fund raising aspects of the project.
Sables determined that SCI Foundation
scholarship awards should be increased and
will be making funding decisions during the
budget process. They continue to support
establishing worldwide scholarship
opportunities. During this next year they are
working toward establishing a new
scholarship in Canada.
Youth programs receiving support and
planning in the future are:
•Continued financial support for the
National Archery in the Schools Program –
being a sponsor of the national tournament
and providing funds for teachers to
purchase equipment.
•Support for the 4-H National Shooting
Sports Ambassadors
•Support for growing The Salvation Army
Outdoors conservation education, shooting
sports and mentored hunts project into the
eastern and southern territories. The project
has flourished in the Midwest and
continuing to grow in the western territory.
•Boy Scouts of America conservation and
shooting sports partnership with emphasis
in further developing programs at Philmont
Ranch and in Tucson with the International
Wildlife Museum ©
Strategic planning causes us to think more in depth
about what is being accomplished and
what we need to think about and plan for the future.
•Initiate a partnership with Girl Scouts of
America – beginning in the Tucson, AZ area
in partnership with the Arizona Game &
Fish Department
Sables have strong partners that contribute
education materials to education programs.
Sables want to build upon those partnerships.
Sables want to partner with SCI in bringing
activities to SCI Convention, etc. that have a
focus on women. ©
SCI Foundation Scholarships
Support 25 College Students
SCI Foundation and SCIF Sables for the
third consecutive year awarded scholarships
to African students studying conservation
and anti-poaching at the Southern African
Wildlife College. This year, four students in
the Higher Education and Training Protected
Management program received SCI
Foundation scholarships. Since this
scholarship was established ten students
were awarded scholarships. SCI Foundation
and Sables (SCI members that have oversight
of SCI Foundation education programs)
support sustainable management of wildlife
around the world through education
programs.
The Hunter Legacy 100 Fund was the first
to join Sables efforts, through a grant, in
establishing scholarships at the Southern
African Wildlife College. Sables and HLF
believe anti-poaching can be successful when
the people of African nations have educated
and trained professionals on the ground to
manage wildlife and to enforce anti-poaching
of wildlife in their countries.
Sables raise funds for SCI Foundation
Education programs that include
conservation education for youth and for
educator professional development as well as
more college scholarships.
In addition to scholarships at the SAWC,
Sables have well-established fully endowed
hunting heritage scholarships at five
universities in the United States. They
include West Virginia University, Unity
College, Texas A & M, Kingsville, University
of Idaho and the University of Montana.
These provide scholarships for young
women, junior or senior, majoring in wildlife
conservation fields of study. These endowed
scholarships currently represent a $605,088
long term investment.
A new SCI Foundation endowed
scholarship is established at Hamline
University Law School in partnership with
the SCI Minnesota Chapter. This scholarship
is for law school students with a
demonstrated interest in hunting and fishing,
supporting the use of hunting as a tool for
sustainable wildlife management and
conservation, and preserving hunters' rights.
College students attending sixteen separate
universities received Conservation
scholarships from SCI Foundation in 2015.
These students are majoring in a conservation
related field of study and are
undergraduates. Graduate and doctoral
students are now eligible to apply for these
scholarships.
There are currently 25 college students
receiving Sables and SCI Foundation
Scholarships this year totaling $64,121.
Education is the future of conservation and
hunting and these scholarships support the
SCI Foundation mission.
To learn how to apply for one of these
scholarships contact the SCI Foundation
Education Department at (520) 620-1220.

The Future of
Hunting and
Conservation
Conservation Science Adventures Camp at the International Wildlife Museum.
E
ducation of youth and adults is of
supreme importance to ensure hunting is
a part of our lives in the future and that
science based conservation makes it possible
to sustain wildlife populations that we hunt.
Sables investment in educating youth in
conservation and shooting sports has made
significant strides over the past five years.
The Salvation Army Outdoors project each
year is reaching tens of thousands of youth in
the Midwest region of the U.S. through
Salvation Army camps, after school
community centers and at KROC centers.
Nationwide Salvation Army has 42 camps, 27
KROC centers and thousands of after school
facilities. Interest in participation in the
project has spread to the western, southern
and now eastern territories. To keep up with
this fast growing interest there is a need for
6
SABLES
equipment – archery, pellet guns and funds
to develop habitat on camp properties for
deer and small game mentored hunts.
Salvation Army Outdoors introduces youth
to straightforward conservation
education/wildlife management concepts
and principles. Youth learn target archery
and participate in competitions through the
National Archery in the Schools Program.
They are introduced to firearms safety and
target shooting through a special basic rifle
course. From these target based activities
they move in the direction of learning to use
these as tools for hunting.
Mentored hunts are held each year for the
TSAO project in Michigan in partnership
with Pheasants Forever. Young people take
pride in their new skills and in
understanding that hunting provides a food
source for their families.
International Wildlife Museum
and Boy Scouts Conservation
SCI Adventures Program.
A new partnership between the BSA
Catalina Council and the SCI Foundation
International Wildlife Museum introduced
new learning adventures for many Tucson
youth including boy scouts. Nearly 100 youth
participated in the first time offering to earn
BSA badges and program certificates in
conservation science, archery and basic rifle.
More programs are planned in the near future
that opens the program to Girl Scouts, too. ©
Ultimate Youth Shooting Sports Guide
T
hanks to the Hunter Legacy 100 Fund a
first ever Youth Shooting Sports Guide is
developed and published. SCIF Sables and
HLF in partnership with Pheasants Forever
provided financial support to make the
Guide a reality. SCIF staff collaborated with
Pheasants Forever staff and authors Dave
and Steve Shellhaas of Miami Outdoor Media
in determining content and in editing.
Fear and misinformation about firearms
is spread through all forms of
media. Many TV programs and
media games are filled with
improper and illegal use of
firearms. With all of that into play it
becomes more challenging to
introduce firearms to adults and
youth as a hunting tool or shooting
sports tool. Shooting sports and
hunting are safe. According to
National Shooting Sports data ice
hockey, football, soccer and basketball have
far more youth injuries per 100 participants
than hunting and shooting sports.
The Ultimate Youth Shooting Sports Guide
is a comprehensive guide to the world of
shooting sports. It introduces conservation in
managing wildlife populations and the
financial role of hunters and anglers that
support conservation and wildlife
management. It is an explanation of how to
get started in shooting sports then explains
each type of firearm from air guns, small bore
rifles and handguns to the various shooting
competitions.
The Guides is in an easy to read format with
photos and diagrams that demonstrate what
is being explained. It includes sections to
teach firearms safety, how to be safe on the
shooting range and responsible firearms use.
Shooting sports is a competitive high school
sport in some states. It is an Olympic
sport. The Guide is the ultimate best
resource for an introduction to
shooting sports. The book is
available online from outdooriq.org
for $19.95.
The book is available to SCI/F
Chapters at a discounted price.
Your chapter can purchase this one
of a kind book for $10 (10 book
minimum) to distribute to young
shooters at your banquets or youth events.
Contact the SCIF Education Department for
an order form. To see a sample page of the
book visit: www.outdoorIAQ.org.
Sables have many partners in the delivery
of SCIF Education programs to youth and
adults. SCIF Hunter Legacy 100 Fund
generosity is helping Sables to bring
education programs and materials to more
youth and adults each year. ©
Thank you HLF 100 Fund!!!

American Wilderness
Leadership School
T
he American Wilderness Leadership
School (AWLS) in Jackson, Wyoming has
been in operation since the early 1980’s. That
is when it was purchased and when Sables
was organized within Safari Club
International to raise funds to pay the
mortgage and to support the program. Sables
have oversight responsibilities for AWLS and
all SCI Foundation education programs.
AWLS success is proven through the number
of alumni who take what they learned and
incorporate it into what they already teach. It
is integrating conservation education
principles into math, science, social studies,
language arts and physical education. AWLS
is professional development for educators
from school classroom teachers to interpreters
in nature centers.
According to surveys of alumni, more than
80% of those responding (50% response rate)
indicate they are teaching conservation
lessons learned at AWLS to their students.
More than 27% indicate they started an
8
SABLES
Jackson, Wyoming
archery program as a result of their AWLS
training. The purchase of equipment is
holding many back from starting a program.
More than 70% continue participating in
shooting sports. Nearly 100% say AWLS
helped them to have a positive attitude
toward hunting. They say ‘it is the best and
most worthwhile professional development
they ever experienced’.
AWLS success is due to the many
volunteers who participate in the annual
work week to prepare the facility for summer
workshops, who become members of the
AWLS Committee of volunteers, who donate
directly to the program and facility, who
participate in chapter training at AWLS and
learn more about it, and who recruit
educators to the program and who sponsor
educator tuition and travel stipends. ©

F
or those who have visited or participated
in a program at the SCI Foundation
American Wilderness Leadership School
know the scenery is one of the most
wonderful in the western United States. They
know the location of the facility in the
Granite Creek area south of Jackson Hole,
Wyoming inspires all to learn more about
wildlife conservation and shooting sports.
AWLS Wyoming ranch is where we
conduct professional development for
educators, SCI Chapter training session and
host meetings of other organization.
Since the purchase of AWLS in 1983, facility
improvements were made to accommodate
guests while housing for staff was put on the
back burner. Staff housing is substandard
cabins in need of replacement and
renovation. When Audrey Murtland, Sables
founder, and Sandra Sadler, Sables Past
Presidents, were visiting AWLS summer of
2014 they toured the staff cabins. They
decided it is time we bring staff housing to a
more livable environment. They made the
commitment to research designs, plans and
raise funds. Through Sables a task force of
volunteers was formed to help. Members are:
10
SABLES
Sandra Sadler, Audrey Murtland, Steve
Skold, Eddie Grasser, Merle Shepard,
Veronica Kosich and Gary Gearhart.
Staff work long intense hours to teach
educators from across the country about
wildlife management with hunting as a
management tool as well as a recreational
activity and source of food. Most leave their
families at home while they come to AWLS to
share their knowledge and expertise. Sandra
and Audrey decided to bring the building
idea to the Sables Governing Board. The
Sables Governing Board contributed $140,000
toward the project to kick off the fund raising.
The next step is to raise another $110,000
toward the estimated total $250,000 project.
We expect to begin construction August 2016,
immediately after the last summer educator
workshop.
We are asking for donations. All donations
are tax deductible. Donor recognition will be
displayed on the cabins and in the AWLS
lodge. To make a donation contact the SCIF
Education department at (520) 620-1220 or
send an email to Sue Hankner, Director of
Education at [email protected]. ©
