Students receive help with choosing post secondary programs suited to their skills and interests as well as information about scholarship and post secondary financing. We also provide information on colleges and universities in Alberta, Canada and international locations. Students have access to a wealth of resources and assistance in helping them make choices for their future. Leadership students develop leadership, mentoring, communication, organization and time management skills while volunteering for projects that include the promotion of school activities, social justice, fundraisers, community events and student/staff recognition. S uccess in the Leadership course leads to a personal sense of belonging and accomplishment, as well as scholorship opportunities. Link Crew is a school-community building program. It is based on the simple concept of connecting our incoming Grade 9 students with successful students in Grades 10-12. As well as creating a sense of comfort for our new students, this link helps them to build positive attitudes and study habits, develop respect for peers, and become motivators and role models for each other. O ur Link Crew students are carefully selected. It is a great opportunity for them to make a difference while gaining excellent leadership skills. RAIDER ATHLETICS Thurber boasts one of the largest athletic offerings in Alberta, complete with state-ofthe-art facilities and equipment. Our students have a multitude of opportunities to develop their athletic abilities. R aider teams consistently challenge for league and provincial titles in all major sports. S ports include the following: Football Volleyball Basketball Badminton Wrestling Team Handball Track & Field Rugby Soccer Curling Tennis Golf Cross Country Running CORE COURSES English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, and Physical Education courses are required for completion of a High School Diploma. CTS MEDIA & DESIGN Career and Technology Studies courses provide relevant and engaging learning opportunities for students. CTS Media & Design students are encouraged to follow their interests and passions, which increases their skills in a variety of areas. The computers, programs and equipment at Lindsay Thurber reflect current industry standards. Courses include the following: Computer Media 9 Interior Design 9 MS Applications Design Studies Programming Photography Graphic Design Motion Media Video Web Design Animation Financial Studies Yearbook Tourism Legal Studies Fashion Studies CTS VOCATIONAL CTS Vocational courses allow students to have hands-on experience in areas of interest while forming the basis for further learning. These courses lead to a wide range of trade-related opportunities. Thurber has specialized teachers who assist students in improving their skills. Courses include the following: Mechanics Autobody Construction Technologies Fabrication Cosmetology Food Studies LINDSAY THURBER EXTRAS 95 Videoconferencing opportunities occurred in the past year, supporting classroom learning. Some connection sites include The Holocaust Centre, The Cleveland Museum of Art, St. Louis University and the Mariner’s Museum. More than 130 students are involved in Student Leadership and Link Crew activities. These activities include the following: Grade 9 Welcome Grade 9 Raider Camp Taking It To The Streets Bar-B-Que Senior Christmas Dinner Amazing Race Red Deer Lindsay Thurber has the largest Counselling Team in an Alberta High School. Our team consists of 7 full-time counsellors. This includes the following: 4 Personal Focus Counsellors 1 Behavior Focus Counsellor 1 Career Counsellor 1 Alternative Education Counsellor Lindsay Thurber is in The 2010 Lindsay Thurber drop-out rate was 3.7% compared to the provincial average of 4.7%. partnership with the Red Deer Day Care Society. Students work off-site and receive credits as well the potential to earn accreditation in Early Learning & Child Care. LINDSAY THURBER EXTRAS In support of our Grade 9 students, they take part in a Raider Camp. This program is a year-long program that transitions students from middle school into high school. It focuses on introducing students to our school, communication skills, study skills and preparing Grade 9’s for success in high school and beyond. Lindsay Thurber offers one of the most comprehensive selection of programs and courses in the Province of Alberta. 295 courses are available to students throughout the school. O ver 750 students are involved in second language instruction in the following languages: French Spanish German Japanese WORLD LANGUAGES A working knowledge of foreign languages complements effective careers in business, social work, the health professions, hotel management, travel and tourism, international law, communications, law enforcement and public administration. Our World Languages department gives the opportunity for students to have an edge going into their chosen career. France Japan Spain Germany INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL Lindsay Thurber offers many exciting opportunities for international travel. Many of our students take advantage of this experience and take part in the international trips that we offer. Through international travel, Thurber students are able to relate course material to the places and structures that they will see. Students also have the possibility of living and learning in other countries as part of exchange opportunities. The eductional value for students are immense. Our students are exposed to different architecture, art, history, culture, language, geography, food, music and people - as well as making great friends along the way! T he Fine Arts department is a prominent component of the culture in our school. Thurber offers a wide selection of opportunites for students. Along with scheduled courses, students have the opportunity to participate in the following activities: Healing Through the Arts at Red Deer Hospital Band and Choir Concerts Provincial Music Festivals Signature Events such as the Jazz Café, the Snow Ball and Jazz Night Canadian Rocky Mountain Festival Regional and Provincial Improv Teams Zone and Provincial Drama Festivals Musical Shows from Broadway Community Art Shows Chamber Ensembles and Pep Band INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM The International Baccalaureate Program is a rigorous, pre-university program of studies designed to give students an academically challenging experience that develops the whole person. Our IB Program seeks to give students the intellectual, social, and critical perspective that will allow them to flourish in the increasingly complex world beyond high school. Central to this goal is instilling in all IB students, the understanding that they belong to an interdependent global community. The Grade 9 and 10 Honours Program is designed for students who are academically inclined and are considering taking IB courses in Grade 11. These courses provide a variety of opportunities for academic enrichment and enjoyment. Thurber offers a full or partial IB commitment. FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAM French Immersion courses include: French Language Arts Étude Sociales Sciences Biologie Chimie Physique Mathématiques Éducation Physique Carriére et Vie Our French Immersion program offers students the opportunity to have a significant portion of their core classes taught in French. Students participating in French Immersion will master both the English and French languages as well as develop an appreciation for French culture. T he program is designed to help our students become functionally bilingual and attain their future travel, education and career goals as bilingual citizens. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Each year, Lindsay Thurber is the destination for many international students from across the world. International students bring a strong sense of globalization and they enrich the cultural climate of our school. Upon arrival in Red Deer, our international students are placed with host families. International students are encouraged to use their English skills while in Canada. They also have the opportunity to take English as a Second Language (ESL) classes at Lindsay Thurber. Lindsay Thurber has hosted students from the following countries: China Japan Netherlands Germany Honduras Malaysia South Korea Colombia Mexico Brazil Austria Romania Indonesia France ALTERNATE PROGRAMS Support Programs: The Learning Strategies program is designed for students who require extra assistance in developing educational strategies, and require alternate instruction to support specific learning difficulties. Our ESL program is designed to provide opportunities to learn and practice the skills required for success in courses outside this program. The First Nations Metis Inuit Learning Services program takes a proactive approach in supporting FNMI students in their goal to complete high school. Odyssey is a regular stream academic program intended for Grade 9 students who are at risk for learning due to external circumstances. This is a program that focuses on the 5 core subjects. The goal of the Odyssey program is to reintegrate students into mainstream classes. Knowledge and Employability: At Lindsay Thurber, our K & E Foundations and Pathways: These programs offer courses provide an alternative for those students who have not achieved success in middle school or high school, but have demonstrated a desire to learn and maintain a positive attitude towards school. individualized program planning based on each student’s strengths, learning styles, level of achievement and learning ability. Students who are enrolled in the K & E program earn credits towards a Certificate of High School Achievement. Upon completion of the certificate, students may continue working towards a High School Diploma. Students are integrated into the regular learning environment according to interest, suitability and appropriateness of course requirements. The level of inclusion, curriculum, class expectations and learning outcomes are modified for students based on their individual learning goals. S ome of our events and activities that occur during lunch or after school include dances, Fright Week, Anti-Bullying Week, 12 Days of Christmas, Think Recycle, pep rallies, Theme Days, Grad Fashion show, a variety of fundraisers and numerous community events.
