Turns out, only a couple of golfers had an
ace up their sleeve on the course. But scores
of individuals and businesses chipped in
to ensure the first annual Lindsay Leigh
Kimmett Memorial Foundation Monumental
Tournament of Aces was a resounding
success. The first installment of the one-ofa-kind event raised more than $100,000,
which was contributed to the Lake Sawmills
Recreation Society twin arena project. It’s
just one example of the multiple ways the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial
Foundation is making a difference.
Lindsay jammed a lifetime of accomplishments and achievements into her
26 years — setting a lofty standard in the classroom, on the ice and in the
community. After she was tragically taken as the passenger in a single-vehicle
collision, her family members, classmates and friends vowed to keep her legacy
alive.
So far, so good. Less than two years later, the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Memorial
Foundation is giving back in many ways, including:
• Every year, one graduate of the University of Calgary Medical School will
be presented with the $2,525 Dr. Lindsay Leigh Kimmett Prize in Emergency
Medicine. Lindsay was a medical student at the University of Calgary and received
a posthumous doctor of medicine degree last spring.
• For the past two years, the valedictorians at Cochrane High School and Bow
Valley High School have each been presented with a $1,000 post-secondary
scholarship. Lindsay was valedictorian of Cochrane High School’s graduating class
of 1999.
• Through the “Lindsay’s Kids” program, four minor hockey players have
been sponsored for the 2009-10 season. The program covers registration and
equipment costs for youngsters who wouldn’t be able to afford to participate in
Lindsay’s favourite sport. Three athletes were sponsored in 2008-09.
• As a result of the first annual Kimmett Cup pond hockey tournament, six picnic
tables and three park benches were installed in Lindsay’s name at Mitford Park,
the site of the event.
Thanks to your participation in today’s tournament, the Lindsay Leigh Kimmett
Memorial Foundation will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of
others. To every golfer, sponsor, volunteer and donor — thank you for enriching
and continuing Lindsay’s legacy.
