The Scheme
A Heritage Walk is taking a group of visitors around the heritage sites. The Heritage Walk
should give an insight into the connected history, culture, legend and lore. Therefore, a
systematic infusion of heritage interpreters on each Walk is considered indispensable.
In an attempt to make each Walk an enriching experience Ministry of Tourism, Government
of India , in consultation with the Government of NCT of Delhi and the Indian Institute of
Tourism and Travel Management(IITTM), offers first of its kind training programme –
HERITAGE WALK ESCORTS to uniquely synergizes heritage with tourism .
This two –tiered training programme will give opportunity to young people to work as
Heritage Walk Escorts.
The first tier of the training programme will bring up interpreters who will connect the
walkers to the heritage at introductory level- good enough to create an urge to delve deeper.
An interpreter trained as such will be called a ‘Virsa Saathi ’. This tier will be taken up as
part of the larger initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, namely the Hunar Se Rozgar Tak
(HSRT).
The second tier will bring up interpreters with a larger vision of history, relatively deeper
knowledge of the heritage in hand and a better communication skill. An interpreter trained
as such will be called a ‘Heritage Volunteer’. This tier will be taken up as part of the Earn
While You Learn (EWYL) initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India.
The conduct of the programme will also integrally connect itself to the Campaign Clean
India – an important initiative of the Ministry of Tourism which specifically focuses on the
cleanliness around and in proximity of the heritage sites.

The Programme
This programme would offer a great learning environment and inputs from accomplished
speakers. Besides lectures, the programme would increasingly use activity based learning. It
would include:
Field visits
Course material
Lunch during the programme
Certification of completion
Course Duration
Both the programmes shall be of 06 weeks (30 working days ) with 08 hours per day .
Course Contents
The broad areas of learning will include overview of tourism, heritage, heritage tourism and
its products , India’s history and culture with special focus on Delhi, Planning heritage walks
,Communication skills, Group Management, Tourism Ethics, Inputs on tour guiding and
escorting and handling emergencies.
Stipend
A trainee with a minimum attendance of 90% and successful completion of training will be
paid lump sum stipend of Rs. 1,500/- at the end of programme.
Certification
The trainees with minimum attendance of 90% will be required to appear in the end of the
course test – practical and viva-voce. Those who pass the test successfully will be awarded
certificates by the IITTM. However, the Director, IITTM will have the discretion for the
reasons to be recorded in writing to relax attendance norm by 10% for the purpose of
stipend and appearance in test.
Training: The training will be conducted at IITTM NOIDA campus with the help of its own
faculty and experts from the field.

ADMISSION INFORMATION FOR VIRSA SAATHI
Number of Seats: Virsa Saathi (HSRT) programme at IITTM NOIDA would admit 200
candidates in 5 batches of 40 each.
Eligibility: Residents of Delhi, minimum tenth pass and in the age group of 18-28 years on
the date of receipt of application.
Selection Mode: Candidates interested in participating in the programme shall apply in the
prescribed format in response to advertisement issued by IITTM, NOIDA. Admission to the
Virsa Saathi (HSRT) will be on first-come-first-admitted basis.
Application Fee: There will be no fees chargeable to an applicant for or trainee under the
Virsa Saathi (HSRT).
