These palaces, abbeys, ruins and other constructions no longer fulfil their original function but they could be reused in order to become part of integrated projects, local and regional development and a source of local identity.” The region is very rich in archaeological sites and historic buildings. The following sites were selected for the ToNe programme in order to generate integrated developments connecting education, training and tourism: „FIVE STARS” + + + + + Zalaszántó, prehistoric mounds and earth castle Keszthely-Fenékpuszta, Roman fort Zalavár-Vársziget, early Christianity Rezi and Tátika castles, Middle Ages Festetics heritage - which was the most influential period after the Middle Ages Historic sites and ages in West-Balaton region Prehistoric Age 1. Zalaszántó-Tátika mounds and earth castle 2. Keszthely-Fenékpuszta – After Roman times, the end of the 6th and the first half of the 7th century brought along a second “Golden Age” for Fenékpuszta. Archaeological finds certify that a socially structured population of large numbers and mixed origins lived in the fort around this time. The origin of this populace is not clear but due to their specific jewellery having been found in a particular area, they are known as the Keszthely culture in archaeological circles. – About 50 tombs belonging to the Keszthely culture were excavated and the finds demonstrated the advanced level of goldsmiths’ craft. They included earrings with filigree decorations shaped like baskets and half moons, round brooches with Biblical themes, hair pins, hairnets, collar ornaments and rings, all of them made from gold and silver. Propositions: • Erection of information boards and a chronoscope. • Production and marketing of copies of Keszthely culture accessories. • Creation of 3D computer model to be used in education. • As a long term plan, establishment of an archaeological park. Middle Ages 3. Zalavár /Mosaburg The eastern county of the Carolingian Empire • Zalavár in the Middle Ages – St. Stephen founded a Benedictine abbey in Zalavár in 1019. The abbey got its title from the St. Adorján church, which was consecrated in the 9th century. The centre of the county must have been near the abbey in the middle of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century, by which time the abbey was named after Zalavár. Modern day mining demolished what was left of the Benedictine abbey on the southern half of Vársziget. – The abbey became a fortified castle during the Ottoman occupation; its ground plan was sketched by Giulio Turco military engineer in 1569. By the end of the 17th century, Zalavár had lost its military importance and by 1700 it was completely unpopulated. It was in 1702 that the Hapsburg emperor Leopold I blew up the castles along with many others. Proposition • Erection of information boards. • Establishment of a chronoscope. • Creation of 3D computer model to be used in education. 4./a Rezi Castle • The castle was built by Apor and Lukács Pécz between 1292 and 1307. 4./b Tátika Castle • The castle was first mentioned in 1248 when Zlaudus, the Bishop of Veszprém, • Tátika Castle is on the territory of the Balaton National Park, a nature conservation area. It is only accessible on foot. Not many people visit it at the moment. Proposition: • Creation of archaeological models • Granting a new function to the ruins, e.g. turning it into a hostel • Organisation of castle games and theatre plays • Organisation of archaeological/historic/conservation camps for children • Equestrian tourism • A site for geocaching • Creation of 3D computer model to be used in education. • Part of the Rezi-Tátika heritage trail • Turning it into e.g. a cottage to be let by tourists. Planned results: • • • • • International model projects, based on the idea of integration, will be established in the partner regions. This will be a good foundation for creating network-based integrated international cooperation and thinking, and constructing international relationships. The good practices of integrated projects will become widely known. The experiences of the GRIP-IT TONE will form part of methodology documentation and, as a result, the preparation, management, partner sourcing and financing elements of integrated projects will be promoted. All this will be instrumental in making the adaptation of the integrated funding system widely practiced in the application of Structural Funds. Due to their well-preparedness, the selected projects can be submitted for further funding. A uniform marketing system will be established, enabling partner regions to share effective tools and methods. Furthermore, the efficiency of marketing tools can be measured in different demand groups and the experiences can be applied to the establishment of a local marketing strategy. The cooperation between local players will be enhanced resulting in a highefficiency presence on the regional and national tourism market. Thank you for your precious attention!
