www.sianbradwell.com May 18 , 1985. Sîan was baptised in the chapel of the Montreal Children’s Hospital by Fr. Emmett Johns, pastor of St. John Fisher Church in Pointe Claire, who in later years founded the charity for street youth, Le Bon Dieu Dans La Rue. Sîan’s Godparents were Sharon’s sister Shauna and brother Brad. th The Sîan Bradwell Fund For Children With Cancer e-mail: [email protected] Tel.: (514) 800-6988 / (647) 693-0637 www.sianbradwell.com ♥ started in 1987 but formally established on October 3rd, 1990 --- the sixth anniversary of Sîan’s birth --- to help children with cancer at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (M.C.H.) through the purchase of medical equipment and other items deemed necessary for compassionate purposes and for better diagnosis and treatment ♥ funds are raised through donations collected year-round and a variety of activities, such as: Sîan Bradwell Softball Tournaments, held in Kirkland, Quebec and Toronto, Ontario Sîan Bradwell-West Island Lakers All-Star Weekend (Pointe Claire, Quebec) Family bowling days in Burlington and Montreal sale of advertising space in the Fund’s annual book auction of items donated other activities organised by volunteers ♥ all activities are conducted by volunteers ♥ volunteers in Toronto started raising funds for SickKids Hospital in 1991 ♥ volunteers in Burlington started raising funds for the McMaster Children’s Hospital in 2011 ♥ administered by the Foundations of each hospital The Fund is named after the daughter of Ken and Sharon Bradwell. Sîan (pronounced “shahn”, her name is Welsh Gaelic) died on March 15th, 1986 of a rare form of cancer, primitive neuroectodermal tumour, which doctors thought started in her pancreas and spread through her bloodstream. She was only 17 months old. The Tournament is a celebration of her life, and the hope that other children may be helped in their own struggle for life. Sîan Sîan (pronounced “SHAHN”, hers is a Welsh Gaelic name which means ‘precious gift of God’) was born at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal on October 3rd, 1984. Her mother found a lump on her foot on March 6th, 1985, and after undergoing a series of diagnostic tests, was diagnosed as having a rare form of cancer called ‘primitive neuroectodermal tumour’ (PNT) in her spine, liver and foot. Normally a brain tumour, doctors thought it had started in her pancreas and spread through her bloodstream. Sîan was treated with chemotherapy at the Montreal Children’s Hospital and radiation at the Montreal General Hospital, since the Montreal Children’s did not have the facilities at the time. She responded well for a short time, but when it was evident that the drugs were not working any longer, she underwent radical abdominal surgery in early October of 1985, followed by an intensive course of radiation treatment. On Christmas Day, 1985, doctors found that the tumours had re-appeared in her legs, jaw and elsewhere. Sîan underwent radiation treatment again, and since the regular chemotherapy ‘protocol’ did not work, she was treated with experimental drugs. They did not work, either, and on March 15th, Sîan lost her battle. She was 17 months old. www.sianbradwell.com ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ Anyone in good health, at least 17 years old and at least 110 pounds may donate whole blood every 56 days. Someone needs blood every two seconds. One out of seven hospital patients needs blood. Three lives can be saved by one pint of donated blood. Between 8-12 pints of blood are in the body of an average adult. One unit of blood is approximately 525 mL, which is roughly the equivalent of one pint. Blood makes up about 7% of your body’s weight. A newborn baby has about one cup of blood in its body. The average transfusion patient receives 3 units of red blood cells. Blood fights infection and helps heal wounds. A, B, AB and O are the four main types of blood types. AB is the universal recipient, O negative is the universal donor. Blood centres often run short of types O and B blood. Shortages of all blood types usually occur during the Summer and Winter holidays. If all blood donors gave two to four times a year, it would help prevent blood shortages. Giving blood will not decrease your strength. A person cannot get AIDS or any other infectious disease by donating blood. 16 tests (13 for infectious diseases) are performed on each unit of donated blood. Much of today’s medical care depends on a steady supply of blood from healthy volunteer donors. One unit of blood can be separated into red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body’s organs and tissue. There are one billion red blood cells in two to three drops of blood. Red blood cells live about 120 days in the circulatory system. Platelets support blood clotting and give those with leukemia and other cancers a chance to live. Apheresis is a special kind of blood donation that allows a donor to give specific blood components, such as platelets. The shelf life of donated red blood cells is 42 days. The shelf life of donated platelets is five days. The shelf life of frozen plasma is one year. Plasma is a pale yellow mixture of water, proteins and salts. Plasma, which is 92% water, constitutes 55% of blood volume. Healthy bone marrow makes a constant supply of red cells, plasma and platelets. Car accident and blood loss victims may need transfusions of 50 pints or more of red blood cells. Bone marrow transplant patients can use up to 120 platelets and red blood cells from about 20 people. Severe burn victims may need 20 units of platelets during their treatment. Children being treated for cancer, premature infants and children having heart surgery need blood and platelets from donors of all types. Anaemic patients need blood transfusions to increase their iron levels. Cancer, transplant and trauma patients, and patients undergoing open-heart surgery require platelet transfusions to survive. 17% of non-donors cite “never thought about it” as the main reason for not giving, while 15% say they’re too busy. The #1 reason donors say they give is because they “want to help others.” After donating blood, your body replaces these red blood cells within four-six weeks. Granulocytes, a type of white blood cell, roll along blood vessel walls in search of bacteria to eat. White cells are the body’s primary defense against infection. Blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors. Since a pint weighs a pound, you lose a pound every time you donate blood, albeit temporarily. Blood donation: it’s a gift that’s in you to give ... straight from the heart. SOURCE: American Red Cross Society www.sianbradwell.com 5th StrikeOut Cancer!
