THOUGHTS FROM THE RAV
It's Time to Open a New Door
For me, and, I suspect, for countless others, one of the most hauntingly
evocative points during the yomim no'ra'im is that moment during ne’ila when we
ask Hashem, p’sach lanu sha’ar bi’ais ni’eelas sha'ar kee fana ha’yom, "Open
for us the gate, at the time of the closing of the gate, for the day is departing."
On one level, the tefilla is a heartfelt request for a last minute reprieve. Please
Hashem, do not close the gate just yet. Please, just one more chance for
teshuva, before the gate is irretrievably, irrevocably closed.
Rabbi Yehoshua Weber
But is that the only way to explain the tefilla? Must the tefilla be a request about
keeping Yom Kippur’s door of tefilla open. Or might the tefilla allude, at least
figuratively, to the opening of a new and different door? Perhaps we are also
asking Hashem to help us open a new door, to help us conquer new vistas in
this New Year.
This ability to open new doors one of life’s most important skills. Life, even its most stable form, is a
continuous progression of life periods and experiences, with the doors of one period and experience
closing while the doors of the next period open up. Please, we ask Hashem, help us progress. We
treasure what was; now that the New Year beckons, help us understand, the new treasures of a
new year.
This ability or this lack of ability is crystallized in a story that I heard many years ago from a
community activist. There was a set of bereaved parents that this activist knew well. Their only son
had died fighting with the American army during WWII. This activist, who was then a young man,
would visit the mother and attempt to assuage her grief. When the mother received her visitor she
would
show him her dead son’s room. "See", she would say, "nothing has been changed
Rabbiinvariably
Yehoshua Weber
here. It will always remain exactly as my son left it.” The activist had, at that point in time, come to
know a Holocaust survivor, a young boy who had washed up on these North American shores, with
nary a relative to greet him. The activist went to that bereaved mother and described both the boy
and his need for a home. The activist then suggested that the bereaved parents welcome this boy
into their home.
The mother’s reaction was instant: "No one can take my son's place." Her ears were deaf to all the
pleas and explanations about how mutually beneficial this relationship would be to both the
bereaved parents and the survivor, about how this young man might give these parents a new
reason to live.
This story strikes a deep chord. Many of our lives’ doors have closed. We have all sustained losses.
But other doors remain open; other doors beckon to be opened. Yes, people that were dearer to us
than life itself have passed away, leaving us dazed with the enormity of their absence. But in
addition to the relationships that remain, new doors leading to different relationships might be
accessible. We might have retired from the jobs that gave structure and focus to our days even if we
loved complaining about the structure and the focus. The doors of learning and volunteering are
beckoning. The yeshiva years with all the attendant purity of learning and davening might be in the
distant past. But maturity might allow for a new world of greater depth in both davening and learning.
P’sach lanu sha’ar be-ais ne’ilas sha'ar ki fana ha-yom, "Open unto us the gates, at the time of
closing of the gates, for the day is fast waning." Let us maximize whatever opportunities Hashem
sends our way this New Year.
A Kesiva Ve-Chasima Tova to all.
Rosh Hashanah is a time of reflection and thought. While resolutions are not what Rosh Hashanah is about – it
is a time to take stock and as I reflect on the executive and the shul a few things come to mind.
Like many organizations that are run by volunteers there is always a core group of people who go above and
beyond their portfolio and are always there to help and to shoulder the load. To you I thank you very much.
We are not without our challenges. Fires, flooding and repairs on an ageing building that was essentially
ignored for years have consumed an inordinate amount of time. We are making headway and the end result
will benefit everyone.
We are not flushed with resources and these extra expenses, above and beyond what will be covered by
insurance, will have to be funded from ongoing revenue.
Yes, the renovations and building permit is progressing. I will leave this to our building chairman, Mr. Arthur
Herzig to comment on but rest assured that we are progressing. Perhaps not at the pace that you would like –
but this is a complex project and I thank Arthur very much for all his time working with the City and all
stakeholders to get this done.
When the Torah speaks of Rosh Hashanah, it tells us "Yom Teru'ah yih'yeh lachem", "a day of teru'ah
(sounding the horn) should be to you". Although the verses do not elaborate on what type of horn or
instrument is being sounded, we are taught that it refers to the Shofar, which is usually a ram's horn.
Why do we sound the Shofar? What is it supposed to accomplish? The Sefer HaChinuch tells us that we are
inspired to action by something stirring, something that will cause us to snap out of the ordinary routine. We
see this concept in practice at a time of war: In order to stir up the troops, trumpets are sounded, in hope that
this arouses and motivates the soldiers to action. On Rosh Hashanah, we do the same. We "awaken", by
means of the Shofar, all who are to be judged on this day. We try to incite all who have sinned to plead with
Hashem and request mercy from Him when judging. Hashem is receptive, as he is gracious, compassionate
and forgiving, of those who return to Him with a complete heart. If the sounding of the Shofar has its intended
effect, Hashem will graciously accept the Teshuva of all on Rosh Hashanah.
After Succos , an AGM will be called and an opportunity will be there for you to get involved. Silence and
complaints are unacceptable – get involved! Be inspired! The coming years will bring with them many changes
– so buckle up – the ride will be worth it! Are you in?|
On behalf of my wife Chavie and our children we would like to wish everyone a Shana Tova – a good
g’benched year and a ketivah v’chatima tova.

PROPOSED NEW CONSTITUTION
On May 26th a special meeting of the general membership was held to review,
discuss and vote on the proposed new constitution.
Unfortunately, attendance was disappointing with just barely enough members in
attendance to officially proceed with the meeting and the eventual vote. The
major proposed changes were highlighted and discussed, with members of the
Constitution Committee and Members of the Executive providing clarification,
when required. Each major area of change was voted on separately with a final
vote taking place on whether to accept and implement the Proposed
Constitution.
The Proposed Constitution was rejected by the narrowest of margins, one vote,
amidst some controversy regarding the voting procedure. As a result of the vote,
the shul is continuing to operate under the existing constitution
It is not clear, at this point in time, what plans there are for the future with regard
to amending the constitution. The Annual General Meeting, originally scheduled
for June and cancelled, will now take place after Succos . Details will follow
shortly.
BUILDING PROJECT
Requested updated status report on the building/renovation project was unavailable from the Building
Chairman when this bulletin went to press. Please contact Arthur Herzig, Building Chairman, if you have
any questions or would like further information on the project.
It appears that the process is moving along with expectations of a building permit to be issued within the
next couple of months.

Hey Clanton Park Basballers!
Congratulations and Yashar Koach to everyone that came out and played, supported, and enjoyed an amazing
2013 season of Clanton Park Youth Baseball! This year we almost doubled our roster as over 170 boys and girls
signed up to the two leagues, and we played 8 amazing games, whether is was 25 degrees, or even that one week
where it was 5 degrees! Baruch Hashem not one game was rained out (for the boys, at least, and we made up all
the rainy games for the girls, too)!
And it was a year of so many firsts! This was the first year ever where we had each child's name individually
engraved on each of their trophies, it was the first time registration was available online, it was the debut of
Olde Spadina hotdogs and Burgies burgers at our end of season barbecue banquet, it was the first year that
our esteemed Rabbi Weber stepped in as a special guest coach one week, and it was the first year ever that we
gave away an 18-speed bike as our grand prize in the raffle. I found out the hard/fun way why we never gave
away a bike before, though, as our winner was in Grade 1! Mazal Tov to Clanton Park's very own Daniel
Rothenstein for winning the bike. (And in Clanton Park tradition: Mazal Tov to the parents and to the
grandparents and to the great grandparents, IY"H Daniel should grow up so that he and the bike will be a source
of nachas for klal Yisrael, amen).
I also want to thank our incredible coaches, who are still all listed on ClantonPark.com/baseball, for keeping the
games fair, organized and fun. Thanks to Monte Tator for housing the equipment we played with each week, and
to youth committee MVP Isaac Kaplan for ensuring things went smoothly. All of you really stepped up to the
plate!
And finally, we had some incredible sponsors this year, giving us Chai (18) Teams: Paul Tobias Insurance,
Modern Niagara, Pizza Cafe, H&R, Alku, Burgies, Olde Spadina, Sparkle Discount Cleaners, Yogenfruz,
Canadian Appliance Source, Chocolate Charm, Canadian Dominion Homes, Dedicated Freight, Delancey
Foods, King of Fish, Joe Boo's Cookoos, Omni Jewels and Java, and Tov Li. Thank you all for your support
and participation. And thank you to Hershy Weinberg for sponsoring the end of season barbecue banquet.
It was a grand slam great season, the kids had a great time, and we look forward to another great year in 2014.
I'll see you on the field!

AS FALL AND WINTER APPROACHES
As our members should be aware there is no parking permitted on the west
side of Lowesmoor Avenue and there is no parking permitted on the east
side of the street between the hours of 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM Monday to
Friday.
The issue is particularly acute in the winter when mincha is during the “no
parking” hours and the parking lot is reduced in size because of the snow.
Members are reminded to refrain from parking illegally on both sides, so as
to not create a nuisance to our neighbours and a potential hazard, G-d
forbid, if emergency vehicles are blocked.
It will also save you paying the City for a parking ticket which, we have
seen, in the past, the enforcement officers are diligent at performing their
duties. Let us show our neighbours that we care about them – let us try
hard to be a shochen tov - a good neighbour.
Thank you to Annie Tencer etc. for decorating the shul for the
celebration of Shavuos.
A big thank you to Helen Muzin for hosting the sisterhood annual
end-of-year shalosh sueda and to Chana Goldstein, sought after
kiruv speaker, for entertaining us.
Also, a very big thank you to Eleanor Lipson for organizing a
wonderful season of ladies shiurim which were held during the
months of May – August.
Also thanks to Ahuva Edel and Faigie Grunwald for helping out the
sisterhood throughout the year.

CLANTON PARK YOUTH
the Latest & Greatest from the Clanton Park Youth
Department
[email protected]
WHAT A YEAR!!! From the Chanukah & Purim parties to the Blue Jays game the
entire youth department has had a great time. Recently we hosted our first
annual PJ party / movie night. All the kids really enjoyed this event. We also
visited the local fire station and said “thank you” to our firefighters who help
save people every day. Pictures from both events can be found in this bulletin.
We have big plans for the upcoming year and we promise you it will be even more
exciting than the last.
We will continue to have Shabbos Mevorchim with the Rav, exciting trips and
events. We will also be starting new Shabbos morning programs. It is something
you don’t want to miss.
We encourage the youth of our shul to get involved and help out with these
programs. This is a great way to get community service hours. If anyone is
interested in volunteering or sharing ideas, please don’t hesitate to contact me
at [email protected]
On behalf of Chani, Eva, Lilly, Asher, and myself we would like to wish everyone
Shana Tova and a happy, healthy, sweet New Year.

Illusion
Professor Paul Socken
I wish they would stop writing books about the causes of anti-Semitism. It seems
that every week brings another learned volume on what someone called the
“unfilterable virus”-- lengthy, scholarly tomes that span the historical record from
ancient Egypt to the present period.
The simple truth is that anti-Semitism isn’t our problem, it’s “theirs”, the antiSemites. We didn’t create it and we can’t rid the world of it. The cause of antiSemitism is the hatred in the heart of the anti-Semite. It’s as simple and as
frightening as that. Why does he hate? It could be jealousy, or his need to explain
why things haven’t worked out in his life, or an attempt to make sense of a crazy
world, or repressed anger over failed relationships or fear of the The Other.
In any event, it’s about him, not about us. If he reads a book on conspiracy theory, or sees a video that
“explains it all” so that now “it all makes sense”, that’s him finding a solution to his inner problems with
someone “out there”. It’s neat and easy and wrong, but we have no power to correct it or change it or even
respond to it because he needs it. It’s a drug that soothes the mind and reassures the conscience. It heals and
absolves and reassures. Debating the anti-Semite in order to convince him is futile because this kind of hatred
is immune to reason and resists common sense.
Most Jews in Canada today have close friendships with non-Jews so the world of the hater seems distant and
alien. Our friends exhibit none of the symptoms of the “virus” because their thinking is clear and their lives
unencumbered by hate. They have no need to blame others for whatever dissatisfaction or problems they may
have. They are as bewildered and saddened by the anti-Semite as we are. The world has come a long way since
the days when the mainstream Churches and governments in the Europe actively promoted anti-Semitism.
There are very grave threats now but they emanate from elsewhere in the world. The anti-Semite in Europe
and especially in North America is marginalized even though he still does exist.
The two most common responses to anti-Semitism – “Let’s reach out and make them understand” and the
opposite, “They all hate us anyway” – are simplistic and dangerous. Naiveté and Fatalism are equally perilous.
One cannot reason hate away. However, it is equally dangerous to assume the worst in everyone and not to
appreciate our friends and solicit their assistance.
Writing about the causes of anti-Semitism may well satisfy some intellectual curiosity as we would all like to
understand why things are as they are. I think that it would be a more productive use of people’s time and
resources, however, if they focused instead on cultivating allies, working toward worthwhile goals within our
society and nurturing tolerance and open-mindedness among our fellow Jews. We can’t eradicate anti-Semitism
but we can create conditions that render it less dangerous and universally contemptible.
We all know that Israel has become the “Jew among the nations”. Every evil attributed to the Jew in the past
is now attributed to the State of the Jews. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose. Yet there is a difference.
A state has the right and the responsibility to explain its actions to other states and to enter into a rational
and fair dialogue with friends and reasonable critics. Israel has neglected this important aspect of its role and
is only now turning its attention to the vitally important function of “hasbarah” (advocacy).
We note, though, that the irrational hatred that attended the Jew applies to countries in many cases. I would
argue that the same attitude must be taken toward those states as toward individual haters. We cannot
reason with haters whether they are leaders of states or individuals on the street. We need only defend
against them. Whether genocide is national policy or personal conviction, take the hater at his word and
defend yourself.
That should ultimately be more comforting and productive than pursuing the illusion of understanding the
hater. Let us dwell in the light and defend ourselves and the world from his darkness.

A reminder to all shul members and those purchasing tickets for the
upcoming Yamim Nora'im:
The shul will be implementing and enforcing a policy whereby everybody
will be asked to present their ticket to the security guard posted at the
front/main entrance of the shul.
Security
In the interest of everybody's safety and security, and to ensure that only
those carrying valid tickets are permitted entry, we ask for your strict
compliance in this matter. In addition, please ensure that, during davening
times, you enter and exit the building only through the main front doors. All
other entrance/exit doors should remain closed unless an emergency
arises. This will be monitored closely and strictly enforced.
YAMIM NORAIM DECORUM
! ‫דﬠ לפני מי אתה עומד‬
During this auspicious time of year let us all make the extra effort to
refrain from talking to our neighbours during davening. It not only
detracts from the kavanah of our own teffilah but also disturbs
others around us who are trying to concentrate on their tefillah.
If you do have the uncontrollable urge to converse with your
neighbour, it is requested that you please do so outside the main
sanctuary and social hall while davening is in progress. Please
respect the davening of your neighbours.
If while waiting for the Rabbi or the Chazzan to complete
Shemoneh Esrei, you get the urge to talk to your neighbour, there
is a guaranteed solution for you. It has been tried successfully in
many shuls, yeshivos and schools throughout the world. Simply try
davening very slowly and pronounce every word carefully as
prescribed in the Shulchan Aruch. Be assured that if you follow this
solution there will no longer be the opportunity to have idle time and
the urge to talk.

Unfortunately, due to illness or mobility limitations, some members may be unable to attend the
shul on Rosh Hashanah to participate in the mitzvah of hearing the blowing of the shofar. To
accommodate those members, the shul has once again arranged with several volunteers to visit
the homes of those members and blow the shofar for them. Please contact Rabbi Weber or one of
the Gabbaim if you will be unable to attend shofar blowing at the shul or if you are aware of
anyone who will be unable to be in the shul. Let’s all have the opportunity of participating in the
mitzvah of hearing the shofar !
ROSH HASHANAH / YOM KIPPUR REMINDERS
 Babysitting will be available during Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur. We are looking to rent a trailer which will be used for this
purpose
 Although we strive to make our environment a family-friendly
one, we must balance that with proper vigilance regarding
potential security and safety risks. With this in mind, please
ensure that baby carriages or strollers are not cluttering the foyer
or any shul exits. There will be a tent in front of the shul where
you can “park” them.
 The shul parking lot will be closed to all vehicles for security
reasons.
 The mikveh will be available.
 Please ensure that the staircases leading to the women’s section
remain clear at all times. In particular, boys and young men, who
frequently congregate on the steps to socialize, are requested to
please refrain from doing so. This causes many women to feel
uncomfortable as they climb the stairs, and could also be quite
dangerous in the event of an emergency
 Kibbudim will be auctioned for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and
Simchas Torah. This is your opportunity to honour a family
member, a fellow shul member or even to just treat yourself! Be
a participant in the bidding, not an observer!

For the last number of years we have
been designating Shabbos Shuva as a
“Quiet Shabbos” in the shul. Please attempt
to refrain from all conversation during the

Two Kinds of Repentance
Rabbi Baruch Weintraub
Sgan, YU Torah MiTzion Beit Midrash Zichron Dov
In introducing his Laws of Repentance, Rambam mentions that he will include "the definition of
this mitzvah, and essentials which are brought along with it." What are these essentials which are
brought along?
A brief analysis of Laws of Repentance reveals that it includes various topics which are
mentioned in Rambam's thirteen principles of faith, such as Divine reward and punishment, and
the arrival of Mashiach. However, in only one case does Rambam specify "essential", writing,
"This is a great essential principle, the pillar of Torah and mitzvot… that you are given control.
One may perform any deed he wishes, whether good or bad." (Laws of Repentance 5:3)
This law, placed precisely in the middle of Laws of Repentance, appears to divide these laws into
two parts. The opening chapters describe repentance, Divine reward and punishment, and
elements which prevent repentance. The latter chapters describe Free Will, before the theme
returns to repentance: "Because control is given to every person, as we have explained, one
should repent, admit his sins verbally, and shake his palms of his sins, so that he will die as a
penitent and earn life in the next world." Rambam then continues to describe the greatness of
repentance, and to depict the world of reward in store for those who repent.
Why did Rambam need to describe the deed of repentance before and after presenting the
concept of Free Will? In his On Repentance, Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik explained that the
Rambam distinguishes between repentance born of fear and repentance born of love. The first is
planted in sins committed in the past and feelings of shame and fear in the present; the engine
driving the second type is the future, my desire to become a different person. We transition from
object to agent, from created to 'partner in creation', by shifting the emphasis from my past and
who I have been to the future and who I will become.
There are ten chapters in Laws of Repentance, and people customarily study one chapter on
each day of the Ten Days of Repentance. We can learn and grow a great deal this way. May we
merit, with G-d's help, to be awakened to true repentance.
