Our Greatest Story Ever Told…
Coming To A Synagogue Near You
We are not the first generation of Jews who have had difficulty reading and understanding the
Bible in its original Hebrew. In Talmudic times 2,000 years ago, synagogues developed the
Targum, an Aramaic translation of the Bible which was read or chanted aloud during services
in a Jewish community, who although they spoke Aramaic as their vernacular, could often not
understand the original Hebrew, even though the two languages are closely related.
Jewish communities in Yemen continued this tradition. In fact, as the Yemenite Jewish
community also became detached from Aramaic, they developed the tradition of reading the
weekly biblical portions aloud three times in the service: once in Hebrew, once in Aramaic,
and once in Arabic. (Please note: Those who find the Torah and haftarah portions “too long”
may find comfort that PBJC does not follow this tradition.) However, the tri-lingual
presentation almost guaranteed that most everyone was able to listen to the chanting of the
Torah and haftarah in a manner that, as WEVD used to say “[spoke] their language.”
Even this Rabbi finds understanding the original Hebrew challenging (more often that I like to
admit). Consequently, I and many of my colleagues wonder how we can make, not only the
story, but also the drama of its context accessible to a wider “audience” in the synagogue.
To that end we plan to experiment this Rosh HaShanah at PBJC with the chanting of the
Torah and haftarah in our vernacular during the service. The story of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar
and Ishmael in the Torah and the story of the birth of the prophet Samuel in the haftarah will be chanted, in part, in
English, adapting the tradition of the Targum.
Rabbi Mark Finkel
I suspect that, like most change, this will be met with mixed emotions. For those who did not grow up in a synagogue
that presented the Targum aloud (99+% of us), it will sound different, even foreign, to us; and although English may be
our native language, we have rarely, if ever, heard it chanted in synagogue. For those who question the place of chanting
a vernacular other than Aramaic in a traditional service, such experimentation has been going on to some degree since
the 1960s in the Jewish community. Now it comes “to a synagogue near us.”
I hope that this experiment can serve as a tool to bring us nearer to our biblical text. It has been said that the Jews gave
the Bible to the world, and some retort that we gave away the Bible to the world. The strength of our Jewish identities, in
part, rests upon our connection to our biblical heritage. (Ponder for a moment the impact a visit to Israel has upon us (or
the 400,000+ young Jews who have participated on Birthright). Now ponder what motivates our brothers and sisters in
Israel to live their lives as they wrestle with a small, arid piece of land as they struggle to find peace in a neighborhood
that is hostile even on its best days.)
And if the chanting of biblical selections in English may sound foreign to many of us regardless of where we stand on the
“traditional/contemporary” spectrum, why should we try it? Because of the words of, probably our most well known
prayer: “Shema Yisrael: Listen (Hear) [people of] Israel …” and the words that we read in our prayerbooks a paragraph
before it: “ … show us mercy; let our hearts discern and understand, hear, learn, teach, observe, follow, and maintain all
the words of your Torah with love.”
L’Shana tova tikatevu: Abby and I and our family wish you a good and sweet year.

My Fellow Congregants:
I hope this message finds you having enjoyed a fun and fulfilling summer break.
Although summer is a time for rest and relaxation the Chevra has been busy
reorganizing the Synagogue administration to insure our financial future. The
recently passed budget has left no sector of the Synagogue untouched. Our Nursery
School has been pared to its leanest, while at the same time insuring that the staff
and programs are better than before. The Religious School has been totally
revamped with all students attending school two days a week, resulting in
significant cost savings. These changes could only be achieved through the hard
work of our Nursery School Director, Rosanne Mendelowitz and Religious School
Director, Mary Sheydwasser.
Perhaps the most significant changes have taken place in the Synagogue office.
Financial limitations prevented us from retaining our fulltime Executive Director. We will move forward with Rosanne
Mendelowitz serving as our part time Synagogue Administrator along with her Nursery School obligations. As
always our office staff will be ably led by Office Administrator Arlene Lopez, who will be in the office from Tuesday
through Friday. As we move forward with the new office staffing and hours I ask that you give our staff your utmost
cooperation so that they can address your needs and concerns.
Our lay leadership is committed to doing more with less in order to stay on budget and function without additional
debt. However, this can only occur if all members help. Please volunteer for a Synagogue committee or attend a
Board Meeting. All are welcome.
I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming High Holy Day Services. On behalf of Shelly, Carrie and Zachary I
wish you a Happy and Health New Year.

Welcome Back!
As I sit at my desk on this beautiful late July afternoon, preparing the first
Candlestick article for the new school year, I find myself, once again, wondering
how time can go so fast.
Summer 2014 at Pine Brook Day Camp has been
nothing short of amazing for ALL of our campers
and staff. Though small in size, we are extremely
large in fun, spirit, creativity and, did I mention
FUN? With daily morning specials, which included
Music with Miss Babette, Fitness Fun with Rachel
and the high energy B-Fit class, our days started off
on a high note. The campers were kept busy, active
and entertained with something unique every single
day! The time spent on our wonderful playground,
splashing around during water play, cooking
yummy treats, and doing some very creative craft
projects kept the campers so busy and they loved
every minute! Some highlights of our themed
weeks included a petting zoo right on our “front
lawn”, pony rides in our “backyard”, dress-up
Hollywood-style photo sessions, making smores over our creative “campfire” and
rounding out the summer with our own mini-carnival! Overall, Summer 2014 was
fabulous! We’re already making plans for Summer 2015 to be even more
spectacular (if you can even imagine!), so stayed tuned for more details.
The 2014-15 school year promises to be a fantastic year for all! Our calendar is full
of exciting programs and activities that I look forward to sharing with all of you
each month. With a new year ahead, there are many exciting and positive
memories to be had as the PBJC Nursery School children continue to grow and
learn with us!
Our First Friends series of toddler classes is set to kick off for the year in early
September. I’m very excited to announce that Miss Lisa (Lerman) will be running the exciting toddler-based
Mommy & Me class and in January, we will offering our Introduction to Pre-School class for children 20+ months.
As we continue to build and grow our community of families, it is our goal to be able to offer unique, quality
programming for toddler-aged children right through their school years! If you, or anyone you know is interested in
one of these classes, please contact me for more information!
September, and the beginning of the year, will be filled with meeting new friends, adjusting to new routines and
taking part in many fun and exciting activities as we learn about all the holidays we will be observing. We will even
be taking part in a Shofar Factory program for Rosh Hashana!
I look forward to welcoming all PBJC nursery families back to school on September 8th!
Wishing you and your family L’Shana Tova! Here’s to new beginnings - may this be a sweet and happy year for all!

Mary Sheydwasser
Religious School Director
It is a warm and beautiful day in mid-August and I am sitting here thinking about my
article for the September Candlestick. As a child, I always thought that the first day of
school had a special “beginning of the year” scent. September seems so very far away
and all the plans for the Pine Brook Jewish Center Religious School are still a work in
progress. By the time you read this article, you will have received our Parent / Student
Handbook either by email or snail mail outlining our many exciting programs and
workshops planned for this upcoming year.
“Judaism is about joyousness, dedication to good works, love of learning, community
solidarity, and concern for justice.” Our theme for the upcoming year will be CHANGE. We, b’yachad, together, will
work effectively to bring about a CHANGE in stimulating our children with thought provoking discussions, debates
and interesting projects while building a climate where people feel comfortable here. We will strive to impart to our
future generation the beautiful traditions and rituals that Jewish life has to offer.
Tishrei is the Jewish month that is jam-packed with the holidays. We start the
New Year off celebrating with families and friends. We move through the Yamim
Nora’im reflecting on the past year, asking for forgiveness and contemplating
how we will lead our lives in the upcoming year. This Tishrei, let us reflect on the
past and contemplate the future in regard to the educational programs at the
school. Much of my time this past summer has been spent reflecting and
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14TH
assessing how to build on our pedagogical strengths. After all, we have
Opening Day Kitot Gan - Dalet (K-6)
to dream about the possibilities that lie in front of us.
With this in mind, we are very proud to announce that KADIMA IS
COMING TO PINE BROOK JEWISH CENTER! KADIMA is the
international youth organization for Jewish pre-teens, specifically for
students grades six through eight. We look forward to getting together
with other chapters to promote our Jewish identity; a calendar of our
upcoming programs will be on our website.
It is my wish that everyone has a joyous and meaningful Tishrei. May you
remember, reflect, reframe and dream as you strive towards your
personal and communal expressions of Judaism. L’shanah tovah tikatevu
v’tehateimu – May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year. From my
family to yours,
Mary Sheydwasser

B’YACHAD Promises another year filled
with new and exciting programming

This year B’yachad, our Hebrew High School, is pleased to announce that in addition
to a new curriculum, the school will be offering additional activities to help round out
our varied program.

REGISTRATION IS STILL
BEING ACCEPTED FOR
THE B'YACHAD
PROGRAM!
Once again, the educational portion of the schedule will be created by a combination
of the participants, their parents and the educational staff. Both the student’s and
parent’s input was determined by a response to a Course Selection Survey returned to
PBJC by July 1st. The remaining portion, as in the past, was created by the
educational department and is certain to foster learning, bring fun and incite thought
provoking conversation.
In addition to our classes, we are pleased to announce that we have expanded our
social programming to include evenings of bowling, miniature golf, Sukkah and
Chanukah parties. Of course, we will be continuing our highly successful trip to
Manhattan, including different locations than previously visited. And finally, our three
day excursion to our nation’s capital, Washington, DC is already being organized.
Since receiving the Torah, our community has always believed that the study of Torah
is never enough. Jews are expected to live Torah and not simply study it. With that in
mind, I am proud and thrilled to announce that all grades of B’yachad will be
preforming our first chesed project. At the beginning of school year, we will be
collecting winter coats, socks and gloves and then in December, will be joining with
selected PBJC youth groups in distributing them, along with sandwiches to New
York’s homeless population. The program is called The Midnight Run Project and we
will be partnering with their organization to insure our success.
I am elated to announce that registration is going extremely well and most of the
upper grade students are returning. Several eighth grade students have already
returned their registration forms and many more have expressed an interest. Simply
put, it looks like B’yachad is on track for another banner year! I join Mary and Robin in
wishing all of you a L’shana Tova Tikatevu, one filled with good health, much
happiness and learning.

A Message to Our Congregation
As you may be aware, the recent changes in the Congregational

synagogue matters. Arlene Lopez will continue to serve as Office

The Friendship Club began in 2000 with a grant from MetroWest. Currently, we have about
250 members from Morris and Essex counties. We meet at various times of the year
depending on the synagogue schedule. We take trips to museums, attend concerts and
shows, have a mid-winter brunch in February, a Shabbat dinner in November, and evening
programs. We have about eight events a year, several with bus transportation. Dues are
$25 annually.
It is hard to believe that as of July, The Friendship Club began its fifteenth year. Through the years, we have hosted
120 events with no end in sight. So far, it has been a fantastic journey for our group and we thank you for your
active participation and support.
As expected, our movie night on Tuesday, June 24 was well attended. We viewed a documentary dealing with the
courage and strength of one individual who not only saved 1,000 Jews during the Holocaust but also founded the
Palestine Symphony orchestra, known today as the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. It was a beautiful film which
everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
As of this writing, we are looking forward to the “AARP Driving Safety Course” which will take place on Wednesday,
August 20 at the synagogue from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is the third year that we are offering this class and so
far, the response has been excellent. We thank Marty Karasick, a member of The Friendship Club and a certified
AARP volunteer for conducting this six-hour session.
Our next event will take place on Tuesday evening, September 16 and our annual Shabbat dinner is scheduled for
Friday evening, November 21. Please mark these dates on your calendar.
Wishing you a happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

Men’s Club President
The PBJC Men’s Club fosters cultural, social, and religious activities and programs for the
members of the Men's Club, Synagogue youth, the congregation and the community. In
addition, we seek to promote understanding and awareness of Jewish heritage among our
members and their children. Membership is open to any adult Jewish male of the
congregation. Dues are $75 annually and cover all events.
It’s always this time of the year that the excitement starts to build. The baseball playoffs are not far off, the NFL
season has started, the kids are back in school and most of all, it’s the start of the new year for the Men’s Club.
We’ve been gearing-up and hard at work scheduling, preparing and planning some of the activities for the New
Year. As usual, we will have a full calendar of events including wine tasting, family bowling, Yom HaShoah candle
program, Cigar Night and the World Wide Wrap, just to name a few, and of course our famous Sunday morning
breakfasts that feature special guest speakers and entertainment along with the best breakfast spread around.
The Men’s Club has taken on the responsibility of doing all the cooking at the family BBQ scheduled for Friday
September 5th. We can always use some extra hands, so let us know if you’d like to help us out. No experience
needed!
The Men’s Club is also responsible for building the sukkah each year and this year is no different. We’re scheduled
to begin (and complete) construction on Sunday morning October 5th. We will be sending out an e-mail to all of
you because we will need some volunteers for the task.
Due to the holidays and other scheduling conflicts, our Kick-off Breakfast will be delayed until Sunday October
26th. If you have never attended a Men’s Club breakfast or activity, this would be the perfect time to find out what
we’re all about. And, just so you know, attending the breakfast does NOT obligate you or commit you to any
additional responsibilities!
You can sponsor one of our breakfasts! It’s the perfect way to promote your company and your company’s
products and services to the men of the PBJC and simultaneously support your Men’s Club! Just ask us what it’s
all about.
Our annual Man-of-the-Year dinner is scheduled for Wednesday evening on November 12th. This is always a wellattended special evening because we have the opportunity to honor one of our own. Stay tuned, we will soon be
announcing this year’s (2014 - 2015) PBJC Man-of-the-Year recipient!
To be successful, we do need your help and participation. You will soon receive your Men’s Club bill for our annual
dues. We never ask for any additional money, the dues cover your participation in all our events and activities.
However, we do ask that you join and support YOUR Men’s Club.
If you have any questions, suggestions, comments, ideas, recommendations, remarks, advice or corrections,
please let us know!
On behalf of the Men’s Club, I would like to wish all of you SHANA TOVA!
May the New Year bring you and yours health, happiness, and blessings. May the coming year fulfill all your
wishes and hopes.

New Ideas for the New Year: High Holy
Days and Shabbat Services
Every spring at Pine Brook Jewish Center, preparations for the High
Holy Days begin and continue for four months. The clergy, the Ritual
Committee, staff, and volunteers print and mail information packets
and tickets; arrange security; plan stage and food delivery; contract
bus service; assign honors, Torah and Haftarah readings; rehearse
with choir members; secure babysitters; sell tickets and holiday
greetings; write sermons and speeches; organize ushers, and set up
the Ark, chairs, and books in both sanctuaries.
This year, inspired by Rabbi Finkel, the Ritual Committee is brainstorming ways to enrich and energize the High Holy Day
services. This is a work in progress, and while the Rabbi, Cantor and the Ritual Committee have big ideas, we will start
with incremental steps this Rosh HaShanah. The Rabbi and Cantor will, as always, lead the way.
The Ritual Committee invites you to open your hearts to an innovative High Holy Day season and encourages your
participation. Your constructive feedback and ideas about holiday and Shabbat services are invited as this is an ongoing process.
To share your thoughts or join the Service Project committee, please e-mail Marcia Kalfas at [email protected].
Meetings about enhancing Shabbat services will begin in October.
Thank you and best wishes for a sweet new year from the Ritual Committee
