To the PBJC community from Rabbi Finkel and Heddy Belman
Serving the needs of
our diverse Jewish
community for more
than 118 years.
March 2015 | Adar—Nissan 5775
To the PBJC community from Rabbi Finkel and Heddy Belman
We are writing to ask for support
from PBJC. The World Zionist
Congress will meet this coming
October/November 2015. The
Congress meets every four years to
elect officers and decide on the
policies of the World Zionist
Organization and the Jewish Agency.
You may not be aware that the
Congress helps decide important
budgetary issues for the Jewish
agency and can ensure that nonOrthodox groups receive vital
funding in Israel.
Mercaz represents the
Conservative/Masorti movement at
the Congress. The last WZO election
was in 2006 to determine the
number of delegates that Mercaz
would receive - the more delegates
we have, the better able we are to
protect and expand funding and
policies which benefit the
Conservative/Masorti movement in
Israel and in the Diaspora.
There are 525 delegates
worldwide, 180 from Israel, 145 from
USA, and the rest (200) from various
countries worldwide. Of the 145 USA
delegates honored and chosen to be
on the USA slate under Mercaz slate
#2, 16 of us are from NJ, 5 from the
Morris County area including: Rabbi
Alan Silverstein (West Caldwell),
Harvey Hershkowitz (Montville),
Rabbi Steven Wernick (West
Caldwell), and Heddy Belman
proudly from PBJC.
While Heddy is far enough down
the list that it is unlikely she will be a
delegate, she could serve as an
alternate. But, far beyond her it is
very important for the Conservative
movement to have a large
representation at the Congress and
to make sure we elect the largest
delegation possible. She is honored
to be on the slate with all the
presidents of major Jewish
organizations and leaders of our
Jewish world. This isn't about her,
however, but about having your
voices heard in these difficult times.
AND it is about YOU being there for
Israel and Judaism worldwide. Israel
is there for us and we need to be
there, collectively, for Israel and
Judaism... Simply by voting and
making your voice heard. Below is
information on how to vote and why.
All of us at PBJC, our families and
friends in the US can make a
difference if we can get the vote out.
That is where we need you. We would
like to see a full scale effort for
congregational members to register
and vote. We can then encourage our
family and friends to vote in the
Worldwide Jewish election. Several
hundreds, even thousands of votes or
more can make a major difference for
the Conservative/Masorti movement
in Israel and Jews worldwide.
We hope that we can count on
your support to help make this
happen. Voting is taking place now
through April 30. Let us help educate
and get the vote out now before
spring. We can all make a difference
and it is simple to vote on line or in
paper ballot.
Cast your vote for Slate #2
Remember: there are two elections
happening in Israel now. One is for
Israel's government. The other, the
one YOU can vote on, can increase
the Conservative - Masorti voice at
the October World Zionist Congress.
Go to www.votemercaz.org, click on
"vote now," and Vote Mercaz Slate #2!
You do NOT have to be Mercaz
member to Vote Mercaz Slate #2! Any
Jewish person with a permanent
address in the United States can
vote; other communities will be
holding their own election. There is a
US $10 charge [US $5 for those 18-30]
paid to Election America to cover the
costs of the election.
If you have any questions about
registering or voting, contact Election
America at (844) 413-2929 or
[email protected]. If you
have any questions about MERCAZ
USA, our slate of candidates or
platform, visit www.mercazusa.org or
call (212) 533-2061 or
[email protected].
Every member of PBJC and your
family and friends should participate
in this important campaign for the
future of Israel and the Jewish
people! Every vote make a difference.
MERCAZ USA is the Zionist arm of the Conservative Movement, linking Conservative Jews in America with the State of Israel, the Jewish
People and Conservative/Masorti congregations in Israel and throughout the world. Follow Mercaz on Twitter @VoteMercaz, like us on Facebook

NURSERY
SCHOOL
February was a short but exciting month here in the PBJC Nursery! Winter just flies
by when you're busy doing all the fun, creative and educational activities that can be
found right here in our halls. Dodging frequent snowstorms just makes it a little more
exciting. Though it has been a challenging winter as of late, we have not let it stop us
from all of our activities. Whether the children were discussing if the groundhog
would see its shadow, working on their winter counting books or discussing the letter
or color of the week, their curiosity and learning never ends. We started the month
with a visit from our friend Travis at Eyes of the Wild! On this visit Travis brought 3
adorable animals, a soft and furry little chinchilla, a fat ground hog named Phyllis
(who had a very important day coming up a few days after our visit) and a beautiful
arctic fox!! We were able to see these amazing animals up close and learn all about
them. We rounded out our month with a very special visit from Dr. Cannilla, our
wonderful dentist friend, who came to talk about good dental health, taking care of
our teeth and how fun it can be to visit the dentist regularly! Thank you Dr. Cannilla!!
For our toddler set, our “First Friends” Music & More with Miss Jodi is in full swing.
This Thursday morning class is an upbeat musical extravaganza for babies and
toddlers and meets from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m.
Summer 2015 promises to be fun for all! We are still accepting registration for the
Pine Brook Day Camp for children ages 2-4.Our program has been greatly
enhanced, including a daily lunch program and great specialty workshops each
morning, including sports, music and movement, Fly-a-Roo Fitness and more! Registration forms are available in
the nursery office or on our website at www.pbjc.org.
Registration is now open for the 2015-16 school year. We will be offering classes, for 2 year olds through pre-K
4’s, as well as early care (8:00 – 9:00 a.m.) twice weekly and NEW this year, extended day from 2:15 – 3:15 three
days per week for our 3s and 4s, in addition to extra-curricular activities on the other two days. We continue to
welcome new families to the area and into our program and we are thrilled that so many families are able to take
advantage of our dynamic, highly-regarded nursery programs! Be sure to share this information with your friends,
neighbors and co-workers. We have been giving lots of tours to interested families and look forward to expanding
our PBJC Nursery family. Be sure to “like” us on Facebook (Pine Brook Jewish Center Nursery School) and check
us out on the PBJC website. We will be sharing all sorts of information, updates and photos.
As always, my door is always open to anyone who would like more information about any of our nursery programs.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
Mary Sheydwasser
Religious School Director
Kehila Kedosha is a community that genuinely cares about the people who are part of it. We hope to touch the
lives of our students and have an impact on the way families embrace Judaism. From this, we form an expectation
of what our schools should teach and ideally, how our students may learn. The “ruach”, the spirit that now fills the
halls of the Pine Brook Religious School, is inspiring and exciting. We hope that we are creating this warm and
inviting community with our class services and special events.
Our kitah dalet students have learned the meaning of community by “living” together for twenty hours without any
texting, or electronic sources. We spent Shabbat together with prayer,
games, and discussion, and most importantly having FUN! Our
activities contained trusting one another, Shabbat knowledge, and
most importantly, getting to know one another. I don’t think that my
bags under my eyes will ever disappear but memories were created
that I do believe will never be forgotten I am so proud of the
accomplishments and skills of our students; may they continue to go
from strength to strength!
Our recent BINGO night was a wonderful way of coming together
and having fun. Our next BINGO event is scheduled for Sunday, May
3rd; please mark your calendars and plan on joining us
In spite of all the snow and ice days, the Religious School’s calendar
of events has been jammed packed with exciting and innovative
activities that foster the study of Hebrew and Jewish traditions. Kitah
Gimel participated and did an
exceptional job in the Kabbalat Shabbat
service on Friday, February 20th. Words
cannot express the gratitude that we
have to our wonderful teachers who
have worked so tirelessly in preparing
our children: Jennifer Axelrad, Julie
Carus, Michelle Nadel, Alyse Heilpern,
and Elisa Berger.
Our Kitah Aleph parents and students
will be learning the importance of
“hiddur mitzvah”, beautifying the
cover for the siddur that their children
will be studying from in the years
ahead. May the siddur be a constant
source of Jewish knowledge
throughout their lives.
As stated in previous articles, our
madrichim are the lifeline to Jewish
education. Josh Gonzalez and Justin
Adel are two more volunteers who
come in every Sunday and work with
our younger students. Thank you both
for all that you do!

Danielle Tuckman
March 7, 2015
Danielle Eden Tuckman becomes Bat Mitzvah on March 7, 2015. She was the final
Tuckman to join our family on February 15, 2002 and we were all thrilled to have a little
girl. Brothers Jason and Ethan were also glad to have someone new to tease. Danielle
is smart, funny and very perceptive. She plays travel volleyball and enjoys basketball,
skiing and hanging out with her friends. She is an honor student at Lazar Middle
School and spends her summers at Cedar Lake Camp with the girls she has known
for years. Danielle looks forward to annual family vacations in Sarasota and loves spending time
with her extended family both near and far. She has enjoyed traveling to Spain, Italy and Costa Rica and being
with the family.
Danielle has been working hard in preparation for her special day. We are so proud of her accomplishments and
her work with Pathways for Exceptional Children and PBJC’s Caring Committee. We look forward to celebrating
with family and friends and thank the Rabbi and Cantor for all their help preparing Danielle for her ceremony.
Danny Scheine
March 14, 2015
Danny Jay Scheine (aka Duke) will become a Bar Mitzvah on March 14, 2015. Danny
came into this world two days early on January 22, 2002 to the delight of his parents
Stacey and Steven and his big brother Aaron who was waiting anxiously for his arrival.
Danny is an honor roll student at Lazar Middle School. He enjoys playing travel
hockey and travel baseball. When he is not playing sports he enjoys hanging out with
his friends and rooting for his favorite sports teams the New York Rangers and the
New York Mets. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with our families
and friends.
Ryan Philip Kawahty
March 21, 2015
Ryan was born on March 21, 2002. Ryan was the completion to his family that his
parents, Robin and Larry, and older brother, Kevin, had been waiting for. A high honor
roll student at Lazar Middle School, Ryan is active, energetic, caring and creative. He
enjoys riding dirt bikes and ATV’s, playing lacrosse, and snowboarding. Because he
has an ability to make younger kids feel very comfortable and at ease, his mitzvah
project was a perfect fit. For his project, he helped children with special needs to
learn to bowl, play soccer and baseball, and create art projects. He knew that when
the children would work with him, the smiles on their faces told him that he
accomplished what he set out to do. He gave them the chance to interact and feel
comfortable doing activities that they might not normally have the chance to participate in. We are
so proud of Ryan and are excited to spend this special milestone with his friends and family.

B’YACHAD
HEBREW
HIGH
We must be doing something right!
Hershey Jaffe
B’Yachad Coordinator
In previous Candlestick columns I wrote about my concerns of ending a child’s
Jewish Education at age thirteen. Months before, I had shared those feelings in
the classroom with my students. We discussed why children have a disdain for a
religious education and realized that if they enrolled in B’yachad their
impressions might change… getting them there seems to be the problem! After
that class, two 10th grade students approached me to express their sadness
knowing that after confirmation this year, we wouldn’t be studying together.
They informed me that they learned a lot during their time in B’yachad and
looked forward to every class. Reflecting on their conversation with me, I have to
admit that I felt ashamed, embarrassed and to be honest, even hypocritical. I
realized that passively, by not providing a place of learning for eleventh and
twelfth graders, I was doing the same thing that I criticized others of doing. By
being complacent with the system in place, I was actually making the statement
that while it isn’t acceptable to stop Jewish education at age thirteen, it was
totally acceptable to stop it at age sixteen! I knew then that I had to make an
attempt to change this paradigm. Mary Sheydwasser challenged me to create a
relevant program for continuing education for the slighted students who actually
enjoyed learning and wanted to continue discussing the way Judaism looked at
life’s dilemmas and how to help our students navigate college. I am happy to
announce, that after several months of rewriting and massaging a proposal, I
have finally, with Mary’s support and approval, created a format and a
curriculum, that the Education Committee unanimously accepted this week.
Beginning in the fall of 2015, our new program, entitled Beyond B’yachad will
commence and offer students the ability to continue with their Jewish Studies. Additionally, and in an effort to
be inclusive and provide an added opportunity for learning, the School will be open to all 11th and 12th
graders including those who didn’t attend B’yachad and weren’t confirmed. The curriculum uses multimedia
resources and focuses on three major topics. Our mission is to provide students with the resources to stand
up for Israel, to be aware of the cult movements trying to recruit those without strong religious beliefs and to
be prepared for the challenges they will definitely face on campus, such as, but not exclusive to drugs, peer
pressures, alcohol and sex.
While I am extremely excited about this new school, I am also aware that it can only be successful if our
membership is supportive and reconsiders their decision to enroll their children. Registration for Beyond
B’yachad will take place on March 15th along with our Religious School and B’yachad registrations.
More information will be available shortly but you can always contact me at the synagogue or by telephone at
973.478.0029. I look forward to developing a partnership with every family and I hope that together we will
continue our ‘environment for learning’ for every child through high school.

experiences, fundraising, and personal growth. We are dedicated to the
perpetuation of Conservative Judaism by promoting Jewish education and
encouraging cultural and social activities for our membership, the congregation
and the community. Dues are $45 per year ($36 for our senior members).
I’d like to say a big thank you to the Sisterhood members who participated in
the Sisterhood/Men’s Club Shabbat service on February 7th. Thank you to
Sheila Basem, Betty Crane, Nancy Drilligs, Carol Kotch, Melinda Kraus, Lorraine
Milkowski, MarySue Rossinow and Shari Schwartz. Ladies – you did Sisterhood
proud!
Thank you to Wendi Leicht, Ilene Thailer and Betsy Steckelman for organizing
another informative and interesting program in our Health & Wellness Series. The
nutrition program held on February 18th with Donna Galarza was a big success!
Thank you, as well, to Shari Schwartz who ran a wonderful Z’Havah Havdallah
Pajama Party. A great time was had by all!
We hope to see you all at our regular “Monday Night Mah Jongg” Game Night
on March 3rd. We were snowed out in February so we are hoping for better luck this month!
March also means Purim, which brings us to our biggest fundraiser of the year! While sponsorship forms have
already been completed, we could always use a few extra hands to help pack baskets at 9 AM on Sunday,
March 1st and to deliver baskets that week. Please contact
MarySue Rossinow (973-394-8885 - [email protected])
or Sandy Zwickel (973-713-8867 - [email protected]) if you
can help in any way. They have worked hard to put together
GREAT Purim baskets again this year!
Sisterhood is pleased to once again provide the hamentashen for
all of PBJC – for the Nursery School and Religious School
students, for the Purim Ball, for Purim services and the Purim
Carnival.
We are proud to be a part of the many happenings at PBJC.
Thank you to all of you who continue to support us in so many

Men’s Club
Steve Gothelf
Men’s Club President
The PBJC Men’s Club fosters cultural, social, and religious activities and programs
for the members of the Men's Club, Synagogue youth, the congregation and the
community. In addition, we seek to promote understanding and awareness of
Jewish heritage among our members and their children. Membership is open to any
adult Jewish male of the congregation. Dues are $75 annually and cover all events.
There was a very special Men’s Club
sponsored event held on Sunday,
February 1st. It’s called the “World
Wide Wrap” and was the eleventh
year that PBJC participated. It has
become a tradition that Jewish
families around the globe gather at
their synagogues and put on Tefillin to
experience the mitzvah and wrap
themselves in the words and spirit of
holiness. This world-wide event is a
fixture in synagogues throughout
North America and in Australia, India,
Europe, and South America. All that
participated at the PBJC understood
that the World Wide Wrap program focuses on a unique ritual imbued with story and metaphor that spans
ages and generations. Following was a great breakfast buffet for all to enjoy. Each year this tradition grows
and we thank our program chairman, Don Rosenthal for all his effort.
The Men’s Club sponsored our annual Superbowl/Matzah-ball pool. It’s a fun way to enjoy the game, support
the Men’s Club and at the same time win some “Matzah-ball$”. The winners of this year’s pool are: 1st
Quarter: Dave Bornstein (150 Matzah-ball$), 2nd Quarter: Keith Bobier (200 Matzah-ball$), 3rd Quarter: Keith
Bobier (150 Matzah-ball$), and our big winner with the Final Score: Jason Benson (500 Matzah-ball$).
Thanks to all who participated and congratulations to the winners!
If you like sports and you missed out on our Superbowl / Matzah-ball pool, don’t worry because the Men’s
Club will be sponsoring our annual NCAA March Madness bracket pool, its right around the corner and it’s
another opportunity to join in on all the fun.
Make sure you stop by the Men’s Club Wine Tasting at the Purim Carnival on Sunday morning March 8th. You
will be able to experience many of the kosher for Passover wines that the Men’s Club will be selling this year.
You can also discuss with our wine “connoisseurs” how to enjoy the nuances and details of our great wines.
You will be able to judge our wines by the quality of their bouquet and taste and, at the same time have a
whole lot of fun! Thanks to Mickey Gilbert, our wine expert, for organizing this fun and educational event.
PLEASE support our “Kosher for Passover” wine sale coming real soon!

The Candlestick
Friendship Club of PBJC
Betty Crane
Friendship Club Coordinator
The Friendship Club began in 2000 with a grant from MetroWest. Currently, we
have about 250 members from Morris and Essex counties. We meet at various
times of the year depending on the synagogue schedule. We take trips to
museums, attend concerts and shows, have a mid-winter brunch in February, a
Shabbat dinner in November, and evening programs. We have about eight events a
year, several with bus transportation. Dues are $25 annually.
It has been a brutal winter so far with frigid temperatures, many inches of snow and icy roads. Hopefully, you
are keeping warm and safe and not suffering too much from cabin fever. On the positive side, spring is just
three weeks away!
As of this writing, we are looking forward to our mid-winter brunch on Sunday, February 22 and let’s hope
that the weather cooperates. Greg Moran, a professional actor and a member of The Traveling Stage
Company, will entertain us with a portrayal of Spencer Tracy, the legendary Hollywood film actor. It promises
to be a wonderful morning.
For the spring, we are in the process of planning several events, such as another movie night and a day trip.
Also, we have arranged a special program in April for our members and details on this event will be mailed to
you at the end of March.
As a reminder, our annual dues statement was included in our last mailing and we thank those members who
have paid their 2015 dues. Your support is greatly appreciated. If you have not paid your dues as yet, it is not
too late. Dues are only $25.00 per person, the best bargain in town.
Finally, if any of our congregants have reached the magic age of 55 and would like to be placed on our
mailing list, please let me know. In addition, anyone who resides in Montville Township and the surrounding
areas is welcome to join The Friendship Club. Membership in our synagogue is not required.
Chaverim of PBJC
Chaverim of PBJC are a vibrant group of adults 60+ who meet at 11:30 a.m. on the

Snow might be keeping some of us down but SASS is being up and plowing
thru. In February we had our biggest attendance ever. Our group is growing and
everyone enjoyed a great night out. We met at the Gourmet Café for delicious
food, wine and socializing with friends, some new and some old. A great
evening was had by all.
We briefly discussed future programming. In March we are hoping to see a show
at one of three possible venues: The Bickford Theatre, MPAC, or The Barn.
Exact date and which show will be finalized by the time this article goes to print.
More information will follow to all SASS members. Anyone else who wishes to

The Jewish Memorial Chapel has been serving
the Jewish community for over 94 years
We have the distinction of being the first non-profit,
community owned funeral home in the United States.
The Jewish Memorial Chapel was founded by a
civic-minded group of Jewish businessmen in 1921.
We uphold the highest standards of Jewish law
pertaining to funerals. We are a Shomer Shabbos facility
and have a state-of-the-art chapel in Clifton that is near
local cemeteries. We also make other state and
world-wide arrangements.
We are owned and managed by synagogues and
Jewish organizations in the area.

Advantages of Pre-Arranging and
Pre-Paying for a Funeral
Funeral services usually take
place shortly after the loss
of a loved one.
Pre-planning lets families
make decisions regarding
funeral options without the
emotional stress related
to the loss.
Pre-planning also makes
one’s personal wishes
known.
