Japanese Festival, Friends Annual Meeting &
Volunteer of the Year Award Presentation — May 17, 2013
Greetings Friends!
Minasan Konnichiwa!
The Friends of the Frankfort Library will celebrate the 11th Japanese Festival at the Frankfort Library and the Annual Meeting of
the Friends on Friday, May 17. Admission is free, and you are invited!
The Japanese Art Exhibition will be
displayed in the Anna and Harlan
Hubbard Gallery May 6-30. The reception will begin at 6 p.m. on May
17 and feature ikebana flower arrangements by Mr. Koichi Narita,
ceremonial woven silk obis from the
collection of Asako Iikubo, woodblock prints, craft paper and swords
from the collection of Yoko Reikana
Kimura and Hikaru Tamaki, pottery
by Hironobu Nishitateno and additional Japanese art from the library’s
collection and private collectors.
From 6 to 7:30 p.m., watch artists
demonstrate Japanese calligraphy.
This beautiful form of artistic writing
may look easy but takes years of
practice. Create origami with Matt
Slayton, who has been folding paper
for more than 30 years. His original
models have been published in the
U.S., Spain and Origami USA annual
convention books.
Try your skill at the game of kingyo

before your scoop tears. Other Japanese games including kendama (ball
on string attached to cup) and daruma
otoshi (blocks) will also be available
to play. Bring your camera; wrap
yourself in Japanese clothing from
the Japan-America Society of Indiana, and snap a photo. Foreign exchange students will be ready to assist
with the activities.
At 6 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., guests may
sample sake, an alcoholic beverage
made from rice and dating to the 3rd
century B.C. in Japan. Seating is limited for the sake tasting; participants
must be 21 years old. Registration is
required for the tasting.
At 6:30 p.m., observe an aikido
presentation by Indiana University
Aikido Club members. Aikido is a
traditional Japanese martial art created in the 20th century. Emphasizing
good breathing, posture and fluid
movements, aikido neutralizes the
opponent by redirecting their energy.
The chief instructor of the Indiana
University Aikido Club, Guy Haskell
Sensei, holds the rank of 5th degree
black belt and has over 30 years of
experience.
The Friends will conduct a brief
meeting, elect directors and present
the Derrick/Fullerton Volunteer of the
Year Award at 7:30 p.m. in the ElizaPlease see FESTIVAL, Page 2

Pottery was
founded by Hironobu "Nishi" Nishitateno. Raised
in Saitama Prefecture, just north of Tokyo, Nishitateno dreamed of being
a professional artist.
After graduating from Hosei University in 2002 with
a degree in economics, Nishi moved south to the island
of Kyushu and entered a year-long intensive pottery
course at Kagoshima Kogyo Gijitsu Center, where he
learned and perfected
techniques on the potter's
wheel, tamed the kilns
and experimented with
his own glaze recipes.
Nishi puts his heart and
soul into creating his handmade works of
art. All pots
are made with
natural materials and glazed
with colors
found in nature. Nishi's
style is based
on the simplicity and functionality of Japanese pottery,
enhanced by international influences. He travels with
notebook in hand, sketching designs and shapes worthy
of new works.

for the Anna and Harlan Hubbard School of Living.
The Anna and Harlan Hubbard School of Living is dedicated to the memory of the Hubbards, who consciously
chose to make their life a work of art. The Hubbards took time each day to enjoy music, art, literature and
finely prepared meals. They worked hard to integrate these aspects into their life and give each one the
reverence and special setting it deserved. It is our goal to offer classes, workshops, exhibits, concerts and more
based on the philosophy,
“We can make our life a work of art.”

Film screening celebrates
Earth Day
Join us at 6 p.m. May 9 at the Frankfort
Community Public Library for a screening
of Green Fire!
See the first full-length, high-definition
documentary film ever made about legendary conservationist Aldo Leopold and his
environmental legacy. Green Fire shares
highlights from his extraordinary career,
explaining how he shaped conservation
and the modern environmental movement.
It also illustrates how Leopold's vision of
a community that cares about both people
and land continues to inform and inspire
people across the country and around the
world, highlighting modern projects that
put Leopold’s land ethic in action in a
multitude of ways.
The Clinton County Soil and Water
Conservation District and the Frankfort
Community Public Library are partnering
to host a screening of Green Fire for the
community in celebration of Earth Day
and Soil and Water Stewardship Week.
For more information contact the Soil
and Water Conservation District at 765659-1223 extension 3.
