Albourne America LLC - Shakespeare on the Sound
JUNE 13 – 30 2013 PINKNEY PARK ROWAYTON, CT from our Executive Director I am delighted to welcome you to the 18th summer of Shakespeare on the Sound. Cross-dressing, wrestling, sibling rivalry, song and dance... sounds like a night watching reality television, but instead it's Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy, As You Like It! That is the appeal of Shakespeare: the characters and stories are timeless. Tonight we share this play together as a community of people, taking away sometimes different but always meaningful thoughts. We are so thrilled to share this exciting production with you! A remarkable creative team, cast and apprentice company of visionary artists have brought magic to Pinkney Park, transporting us to a place to inspire, engage and ignite our hearts and minds. Look around you and take this moment to hear the laugher among friends and see the children playing in such an idyllic setting. What a joy to declare this as ours! You play the biggest part by contributing to the quality of life in our region supporting Shakespeare on the Sound. Together we have created one of the finest Shakespeare company's to be found anywhere. Thank you to the foundations, corporations and individuals who contribute and support our programming. Donations and in-kind services are what maintain this non-profit organization. 100% of all donations go to the programs of Shakespeare on the Sound. Claire has chosen to focus on the idea of transformation in this production of As You Like It and that idea cannot be more relevant for our organization at this time. This year we were forced to make a change, presenting performances solely in Rowayton. We struggle to reach our full potential as we evolve in these challenging times. We are emboldened, however, by the consistent support we receive from the very people who make this organization important: you. We need you, we need your sustained involvement, and we need your support to keep us transforming in the right direction, providing free Shakespeare to our community for many years to come. Thank you and enjoy the show! drbank.com Steven Yuhasz Executive Director “Summer's lease hath all too short a date.” 4 5 SHAKESPEARE ON THE SOUND Executive Director STEVEN YUHASZ presents WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE’S AS YOU LIKE IT Directed by CLAIRE SHANNON KELLY with (in alphabetical order) Andy Baldeschwiler, Michael Bloom, Tom Butterworth, Chris Ghaffari, Matthew Dalton Lynch, Paula Galloway, David Gautschy, Beatrice Kelly, Thomas Kelly, Elena Kritter, Daniel Levitt, Iris McQuillan-Grace, Tom Pecinka, Chris Smalley, Medina Senghore, Katie Wieland, Olivia Winn Music by BRIAN FEINSTEIN williampitt.com DARIEN BROKERAGE | 1057 Post Road | 203.655.8234 ROWAYTON BROKERAGE | 147 Rowayton Avenue | 203.838.2190 Each Office Is Independently Owned and Operated. *Red Boats, Argenteuil used with permission. 6 Set Design BRIAN PRATHER Lighting Design HERRICK GOLDMAN Costume Design CAROL SHERRY Sound Design SHANNON SLATON Choreography MICHELE ELLIMAN Assistant Director LUCY VAN ATTA Technical Director MAIA ROBBINS-ZUST Production Stage Manager ABIGAIL STRANGE Casting 22Q ENTERTAINMENT Dramaturg EMILY BRYAN Associate Producer ROBERT LEVINSTEIN Producing Associate SCOTT BARTELSON 7 Cast order of appearance Orlando . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . The Duke has exiled his brother, Duke Senior, to the Forest of Arden, but keeps the banished Duke’s daughter, Rosalind, at court as a companion to Celia, his own daughter. cherished. The melancholy Jacques, the wit of Duke Senior’s banished court, laments the way people and civilization disrupt the peace and beauty of nature. He is delighted to meet Touchstone, the court fool, who ensconces himself in the pastoral world by taking up with Audrey, an earthy maid who tends her goats. Orlando, the youngest son of Sir Rowland de Boys, complains bitterly that Oliver, the first-born son, has treated him miserably and tells the servant Adam that he's going to challenge Charles, the wrestler, at court to gain honor and get out from under his brother's yoke. When Orlando wins the wrestling match, Duke Frederick becomes wary of him and Oliver plots to kill his own brother. Rosalind and Celia, however, are enchanted by Orlando. Rosalind gives Orlando a chain to wear for his victory and he is smitten with her. After the wrestling, Duke Frederick turns against Rosalind and banishes her, saying that she's a traitor like her father. Celia, who adores Rosalind, can't dissuade him. Celia and Rosalind plan to go to the Forest of Arden to find Rosalind’s father, the banished Duke. To protect themselves from thieves, Celia dresses as a commoner, called Aliena. Rosalind dresses like a boy, called Ganymede. They take Touchstone, the court fool, with them. Orlando, too, leaves the court for the Forest of Arden to seek the exiled Duke, and takes his loyal servant, old Adam, with him. The Forest of Arden is so unlike the court of Duke Frederick. In Arden, the simple, pastoral life is University Theatre 222 York York Street New Haven EXCLUSIVE NORTHEAST U.S. ENGAGEMENT THIS SEASON! Info & tickets at artidea.org When Rosalind/Ganymede finds this bad love poetry and realizes it is meant for her, her heart sings, but she also decides that she must school Orlando in his wooing. In her boy’s attire, she convinces Orlando to pretend that she is Rosalind so he can practice. As Ganymede, she also tries to help the lovesick shepherd Silvius by encouraging the shepherdess Phebe to love him, but Phebe falls in love with Ganymede instead. Rosalind despairs that Orlando may just be playing at love when he is late to meet her, but his brother Oliver reveals that Orlando has been injured when he fought off a lioness that was about to pounce on Oliver, who was asleep in the Forest. Orlando’s bravery and selflessness inspire a conversion in Oliver, who gives all his land to Orlando and vows to live in the forest. Celia and he fall in love, while Rosalind faints at the sight of Orlando’s blood. Oliver brings them to Orlando, who says that he cannot stand wooing an imagined Rosalind any longer. Rosalind/Ganymede declares that she will resolve all these love quandaries with the help of some magic and she returns as Rosalind to marry Orlando and forces Phoebe to love Silvius. The play ends with four marriages and Rosalind speaks the epilogue inviting us all to take the play As You Like It! Rosalind pines for Orlando whom she has loved since their brief meeting. Orlando, after finding the Duke and securing food and shelter for old Adam, throws himself into writing love poems to Rosalind and posts them on every tree in the Forest. As You Like It is one of my favorite plays because it balances dark and light so well. What moves me most about this play is the authentic way in which Shakespeare explores the complex theme of human transformation, or, more simply, the journey that takes us from who we are to who we want to be – the best versions of ourselves. Each of Shakespeare’s main characters in this play go on such a journey. As You Like It begins in a very dark place and it is not immediately clear that the play is a comedy. Duke Fredrick’s court is pompous and envious, a world in which the freedom to choose does not exist. The characters that inhabit Duke Fredrick’s court are trapped in roles they never wanted to play. Rosalind, for example, is forced to endure life without her beloved banished father. Orlando is oppressed by his older brother’s cruelty. RElove YOUR HOME Shakespeare gives us a new wonderful world for this journey of transformation to occur, the Forest of Arden. The Forest of Arden is a magical place in which the characters are able to shed the bondage of their old selves. Only in Arden would Rosalind be able to woo and win the heart of the man she loves dressed as a boy, or Oliver reconcile with a brother whom he loathes with every fiber of his being. It is important to note, however, that Arden is not a place devoid of sorrow, melancholy, anger, frustration; those human emotions are always with us. Rather, it is a place where the freedom of choice exists. As this is a comedy, Shakespeare fills his play with fun, accessible, recognizable characters. For example, the pompous Le Beau, the clever clown Touchstone, the love-sick Silvius, and the melancholy Jaques. And, As You Like It boasts one of Shakespeare’s greatest female characters, the strong yet vulnerable Rosalind. It has been such a joy to work on this play, to spend time with these unforgettable characters brought to life by this enchanting cast. We all hope you enjoy the play as much as we have delighted in bringing it to you! Claire Shannon Kelly Ring’s End Proudly Supports Shakespeare on the Sound MILLWORK t MOULDINGS LUMBER t BUILDING MATERIALS ARCHITECTURAL HARDWARE KITCHENS t PAINT RingsEnd.com 26 27 About the Text “Come, woo me, woo me, for now I am in a holiday humor…” Rosalind to Orlando – As You Like It As You Like It, written in 1599, is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies, gently mulling over weighty issues, such as nature versus nurture, freedom versus constraint, art versus artifice and country life versus city life. With a light touch, Shakespeare constructs his play around these debates. He also creates two excellent clowns, Touchstone and Jaques and writes perhaps his second most famous speech, after “To Be or Not To Be,” – “All the World’s a stage and we are merely players in it.” His crowning achievement in As You Like It is the character of Rosalind. When the play begins Rosalind is a captive in her uncle’s court, comforted only by her dear cousin Celia, but when she enters the Forest of Arden, dressed as a boy, she quite simply transforms into one of Shakespeare’s greatest female characters, quick-witted, funny, sparkling and brilliant. At the heart of the play is the wooing of Rosalind and Orlando and she takes it upon herself to orchestrate their courtship. While other women in Shakespeare’s canon try to control the way their suitors interact with them, Rosalind is singular in her ability to manage Orlando. Try as Portia might to dissuade him, Bassanio still gave away her ring in The Merchant of Venice; Viola never really dares to manage the love triangle she is in, preferring to let time untangle the knot she has created in Twelfth Night; Helena tricks Bertram into bedding her, but her triumph over him feels very hollow – All’s Well that Ends Well doesn’t end very well. one question: What do women desire most in the world? She gives him a year and a day to come up with an answer. The Knight travels across the globe asking women, and he never gets the same answer twice. Finally, just as time is running out, he meets an old hag who tells him that she can give him the answer if he will marry her. Desperate, the Knight agrees and he tells the court that women desire to have sovereignty over their husbands. The Queen and her court agree and free the Knight. The hag reminds him of his promise to her, and when the Knight balks at marrying her, she reveals herself as an enchantress and says, “I can either be a hag at night and beautiful by day or beautiful at night or a hag during the day.” One choice would ruin the Knight’s reputation, but the other would make his private life miserable. The Knight thinks about it and says, “It should be your choice.” The hag, delighted with his answer, transforms herself into a beauty both day and night. The Wife of Bath holds this story up as the true example of what women want: the freedom to make their own choices. In our production, The Forest of Arden is a place of transformation, where characters can shake off the restrictions of the court and have the opportunity to choose their own destinies. Rosalind is the character that most represents this freedom in the play. Emily Bryan, Director of Education For more information on the play, pick up a copy of the Study Guide at the Education Tent Shakespeare’s depiction of Rosalind recalls Chaucer’s Wife of Bath’s tale from The Canterbury Tales. In this story, a Knight is sentenced to death and begs for a reprieve. The Queen is willing to spare his life if he can answer 28 PHOTO BY CHANDLER SIMMS PHOTOGRAPHY But Rosalind manages it all perfectly. Dressed as Ganymede, her male persona, she convinces the love-shaked Orlando to woo her and pretend that she is his “Rosalind.” She stages their wooing and even their marriage, so that she gets to have the man she loves woo her and teaches him how to treat her. Perhaps this play should have really been called “As Women Like It.” Rosalind speaks more than any other female character in the canon (almost 700 lines) and through her character the play makes a study of women while gently critiquing their behavior. When Rosalind is dressed as Ganymede, her female side continually spills over. She is constantly interrupting and interrogating Celia and when she is chastized, Rosalind retorts: “Do you not know I am a woman? When I think I must speak.” In this play, women are not “chaste, silent and obedient,” the typical code of behavior for Renaissance women. Though it makes funny observations about women, As You Like It never wants to silence them and never apologizes for them. Proud To Support 59 Educational Programs Shakespeare ON and As You Like It at the Libraries Carver Center After-School Residencies Director of Education, Emily Bryan, led discussions in the fall in our Shakespeare ON series, featuring reflections on nature and love in the canon at the Darien Library. Yale Professor, Mark Schenker, led lectures on As You Like It at Rowayton, New Canaan, Darien, and Westport libraries in June. Teaching Artist Jo Anne Parady led children’s workshops on this year’s play at Pequot, Rowayton and New Canaan libraries. Looking at conflict and resolution through four different Shakespeare plays (Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Merchant of Venice, Julius Ceasar), students engaged in theatre activities that highlighted the complexities of the relationships in the plays and the ways that each character deals with their dilemmas. We premiered the program in Hartford at McDonough Experiential Learning School and America’s Choice at SAND school to praise from teachers Iris McQuillan-Grace and Nicholas Urda in Speaking and students. Shakespeare on Daggers in Hartford. the Sound continues to schedule this touring workshop in more schools in the 13-14 school year. Speaking Daggers addresses the national epidemic of bullying through Shakespeare’s works by looking at the complex power relationships between the characters in Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Merchant of Venice. The program allows students to take action in finding alternative solutions to the conflicts in the play by inviting them onto the stage with the actors. The program also addresses social exclusion, cyberbullying, and empathy building all through active dialogue between actor and student. If you are interested in bringing our experienced and knowledgeable staff and teaching artists into YOUR classroom, contact our Director of Education, Emily Bryan at [email protected] ! 62 PHOTO BY HARTFORD COURANT Shakespeare on the Sound continues to enter into classrooms across Connecticut and Westchester county bringing the works and words of Shakespeare alive to students from every generation.
