In Europe, polymer binders were first used
in the 1930s to improve the characteristics
of mortars. WACKER was among the first to
produce polymer dispersions and dispersible
polymer powders for the paints and construction industries, and has been enhancing its
portfolio for decades under the VINNAPAS®
trade name.
Today, WACKER is a global market and technology leader with production sites on three
continents and over 100 subsidiaries, sales
offices and technical centers all over the world.
VINNAPAS® dispersions are co- and terpolymers
based on vinyl acetate, ethylene and other
monomers. Vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE), in
particular, combines technical performance with
environmental benefits. The portfolio comprises
many grades that are stabilized without the use
of APEO-based surfactants and with low residual
monomer content (< 500 ppm).

Make the Move to the
technology of the future ...
Solvents, VOC content and plasticizers in interior paints
are just examples of the topics that are under discussion
concerning the environmental impact of construction
materials. WACKER recognized the importance of a low
VOC content decades ago and developed specialized
VINNAPAS® VAE copolymer dispersions.
Between the late 1980s and the early 1990s,
the main challenge was to reduce the VOC
content without lowering performance. The
result was VINNAPAS® VAE copolymer dispersions that combine many advantages:
• Superior film formation without film-forming aids
• Low residual monomer content (grades
< 500 ppm available)
• Low odor
• Polymerization without APEO-containing
substances
• Low formaldehyde content (grades < 20 ppm
available)
More Performance with Fewer Ingredients
VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions provide excellent
film-forming properties without the addition of
coalescing agents. And they achieve this at very
low temperatures of less than 5 °C. At the same
time, it is possible to formulate interior paints that
fulfill high standards of e.g. scrub or blocking resistance. This results in a favorable cost-in-use ratio.
6
Compliance with Strict Labels
With our cutting-edge VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions,
the construction and paints industries are equipped
to meet stringent governmental regulations, as well
as the requirements of internationally recognized
ecolabels and certifications, such as Blue Angel, EU
Ecolabel, LEED and Green Seal.
VAE dispersions are …
… copolymers produced by the emulsion
polymerization of the hard, polar monomer vinyl
acetate and the soft, hydrophobic monomer
ethylene. Ethylene functions as an optimal
flexibilizer for vinyl acetate, which gives permanent flexibility to VAE polymers. No external
plasticizer is thus necessary in VAEs.

Low VOC meets high
PerformaNce
General Benefits
• High formulation versatility
• Produced without APEO surfactants
• Low to very low VOC formulations possible
• Production advantages through grades
with a higher solids content
• High compatibility with slurries
• Excellent scrub resistance
• Favorable cost-in-use ratio
Application Spectrum

Fulfilling Tomorrow’s Demands Today
The first modern paints were solvent-based with
solvent/VOC contents of up to 70%. Later, waterborne paints with a considerably lower VOC
content were developed. Today, coatings with a
VOC content of < 700 ppm are state-of-the-art.
The challenge is to reduce VOCs without compromising performance. VINNAPAS® VAE copolymer
dispersions do this via “hydroplasticization”: water
takes the role of an internal flexibilizer, enhancing
the coalescence of the polymer particles. They
thus exhibit excellent film-forming characteristics
without the addition of coalescing agents – even
at temperatures well below 5 °C.
Evolution of VOC Reduction in Architectural Coatings

VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions meet the highest
technical demands and the environmental
requirements of the most stringent ecolabels
in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Combining Breathability and Low Flammability
Exterior coatings are exposed to varying climatic
conditions: it can be hot or cold, humid or dry in
different combinations. This is accompanied by
different degrees of UV radiation. VINNAPAS®
dispersions feature high water resistance combined with high mechanical strength, leading to
outstanding exterior weathering behavior. They
thus allow the formulation of coatings with a high
resistance to dirt pick-up and long-lasting performance even when exposed to harsh conditions.
VINNAPAS® polymer dispersions based on vinyl
acetate-ethylene-vinyl chloride additionally provide
low flammability for flame-retardant formulations
that match Fire Class B as per EN 13501-1.
PRIMIS® AF 1000: WACKER’s Novel Acrylic
Binder for High-Performance Exterior Paints
PRIMIS® AF 1000 is a new binder that combines
organic and inorganic components, thus providing
a completely new property profile. This highperformance exterior paint binder addresses two
of the most pressing challenges in exterior paint
formulations: dirt pick-up and color stability. By
greatly enhancing these two properties, PRIMIS®
AF 1000 ensures bright and good-looking facades
for extended periods of time.

FireProof
solutions
Intumescent & Fire-Resistant Paints
When in contact with fire, intumescent (swelling)
coatings based on VINNAPAS® dispersions burn
to a firm foam with extremely low thermal conductivity, protecting steel beams, for example, for
a predictable period of time. Fire-resistant paints
based on vinyl-chloride-containing VINNAPAS®
terpolymers improve the fire-retardant effectiveness based on the self-extinguishing properties
of chlorine.
General Benefits
• Excellent foam development that provides
high expansion factors for coatings with
a low dry film thickness (DFT)
• Good adhesion to steel beams
• Excellent compatibility with intumescent
coating additives
• High shelf life of final intumescent coatings
even under difficult climatic conditions
• Manufactured without APEOs or plasticizers
• Low amount of VOC and very low amount
of formaldehyde
Application Spectrum
• Fire-resistant, water-based paints or systems
• Intumescent, water-based paints or systems
14
VINNAPAS® EZ 3112
Intumescent fire protection coatings are used
to protect steel girders in the event of a fire. The
coating is usually applied one to four millimeters
thick and, when subjected to heat, foams to tens
of hundreds of times its original thickness, protecting the steel girders against the heat of the fire for
a defined period. They thus retain their strength for
longer. VINNAPAS® EZ 3112, based on vinyl
acetate-ethylene-vinyl ester terpolymers, shows
particularly pronounced foaming and expansion,
as well as long-term foam stability. At the same
time, the adhesion and strength of the intumescent
coatings improve, so that the protective layer firmly
adheres to the substrate and forms a heat barrier
for a limited period. Without the binder, the foam
layer would be too brittle and would have inadequate adhesion to the steel substrate.
High-rise buildings, which
will be a common feature of
tomorrow’s megacities, are
getting taller and taller.
The steel skeletons of
these constructions must
be protected against fire.
Otherwise, they could bend
and collapse within five to
ten minutes.

• Excellent barrier properties
• Low and uniform absorbency
• Good adhesion of emulsion paints and coatings
even on critical substrates
• High compatibility with different substrates
• Good consolidation of construction surfaces
• Bridging of small cracks

Ideal for Many Applications
Most buildings are built one layer upon the next.
Primers are essential to ensure the long-term
durability of each subsequent layer, either for
interior or exterior applications. Under outdoor
conditions, primers require high water repellency and good barrier properties, which is where
hydrophobic dispersions such as VINNAPAS® are
needed. Dispersions with small particles penetrate
well into the surface and consolidate open-pore
substrates such as concrete, cement and gypsum
plasterboards and control the absorbency of the
substrate.

Protecting Buildings –
Saving Energy
VINNAPAS® dispersions improve essential
characteristics of renders and plasters,
securing a durable and efficient coating.
General Benefits
• Good adhesion (on masonry, concrete and
EPS panels) and flexibility at the same time
• Good compatibility with cement and
alkaline surfaces
• Excellent hydrophobicity/weatherability
• High flame retardancy
(particularly VC-containing terpolymers)
• High impact resistance
Advantages of VAc-E Copolymers
A major challenge with ETICS has been that
cementitious materials do not adhere to organic
insulation materials such as polystyrene. Ethylene
exhibits exceptionally good adhesion to EPS,
which is why VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions are
especially suitable. VINNAPAS® VC-VAc-E grades
additionally exhibit high flame retardancy, compared
to styrene acrylics, for example.

External Thermal Insulation Composite
Systems (ETICS): Sustainability Starts Here
Worldwide, 40% of primary energy is used for
buildings. Up to 70% of heating energy could
be saved through insulation. The most effective
way is to insulate walls from the outside, e.g.
with ETICS.
