ELIZABETH ANDREW
President Of The Friends Of The Long Beach Public Library
Happy New Year to all. Don’t you just get
giddy at the beginning of the year? No? OK,
maybe I should say, I get giddy at the
beginning of the year. A new year, as
in I can do anything, start that diet
again and get down to that magical
weight from High School, clean out the garage,
weed the garden after the rain, vacation in
exotic places, etc. And, so too with the Friends. New beginnings.
New projects. New goals. New members. New technology.. etc…..
It’s the time for new visions and ideas, and a time to be
creative and think outside the box. Where to start the journey?
Our history: Remembering who, what, where, when, why, and how
we formed. Then it’s to where we are now, our present, and
ultimately our future. Where are we going?
The history: Established in 1962, a non-profit 501c3 organization.
That was a different time, and, our first goal was to preserve the
freedom of the library and prevent censorship (still doing that).
Then and Now: Through volunteer work, fundraising,
membership drives, and other activities, the Friends
support the library financially for items or programs not
normally included in the operating budget, for promotion
of the library through public relations and support
summer reading programs, provide cultural and literary
events for the community, fund training for library staff, and keep
abreast of current issues affecting the library, and through advocacy
when the library needs additional funding, when a capital campaign
is needed, or when a library’s budget is threatened.
We continue to advocate for a strong public library
system.

the new Main library, increase budgets for:
cutting edge technology, books, computers,
iPads, programs….insert your own wish list for
your neighborhood branch here.
This rapidly changing world is
requiring us to take another
look at our short term plans
and create new long range
goals and be a key player in
the ever expanding role of
social networking. Much of what is going on
around us is growing in leaps and bounds.
Let’s engage our membership and be a part
of that. Help us be a part of that.
First things first. People need to know who
we are, and today that gauge is reflected in
social media.

Thought provoking? Yes, it is. It
gets you thinking, at least it did
me. How can I increase our
visibility? How can you? Join
Friends – increase membership. Our
current membership number
is 525. Everyone reading
this, share with your family,
friends, neighbors, book clubs,
children, give membership as
a gift, for birthday, Valentine’s Day. If you are a
member of the Library Foundation, are you also
a member of the Friends? Do people you know
who use the library belong? Do all the library
employees belong, and what about other city
employees, our school children, school teachers
and administrators? I’ve found that many who
access the library do not belong to the Friends.
It’s a variety of reasons, generally they have been
meaning to, but haven’t gotten around to it. And
there are many who don’t know about us. First,
let’s get our name and who we are out there.
Get involved in your library, of
course, there is the Friends Board,
where we do have 2 vacant seats
Legislation and Helen Fuller
Carrousel.
Help us with events, plan them, volunteer at
events, parades, suggest an event
and how to staff it. Primarily, it’s
been the responsibility of the
Board to plan and carry out our
events. It’s time to engage our
membership. With more of you willing to pitch
in and volunteer, we can have fun and
profitable events too: book sales, wine tasting,
antiques road show, what event would you like
to see and help us plan?
I am inviting you to help us in all areas. We want
more visibility. Why? Fun, money, promote services,
utilize a vital resource.
Have ideas? Want to get involved? Adopt your
local library and advocate for them? Contact me:

MEET DORIS SORIANO
Treasurer

Doris worked for the Long
Beach Public Library for 29
years at various positions,
including managing the
branches and the Main
branch. When the library
director was unable to
attend Friend’s board
meetings, Doris typically attended in her place. She
appreciated the work the Friends did and planned to
volunteer when she retired in 1996.
By 1997 she was on the board as
treasurer. She says no one was
excited about taking the position
that had been held for 20 years by
the former treasurer, so she was a
shoo-in.
Doris likes working with numbers and the Friends
have been the lucky recipients of
her talent. Not only does she keep
the books for the Friends, but she
also manages the separate funds
for the Blanche Collins Forum and
the Helen Fuller Cultural Carrousel.
Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Doris was often
visited by an aunt and uncle who lived in Arcadia.
They brought the coolest stuff from California, and
Doris knew she had to get to the West Coast
eventually. Her mother was a teacher and
encouraged Doris to go into the profession, but
Doris noticed the many nights of correcting
papers at home and chose to go a different, but
related route. She received her BA
from Coe College in Cedar
Rapids, and then a Masters in
Library Science from Columbia
University in New York. She
worked several positions in Iowa,
before packing it up for warmer
weather.
She met and married her husband of 36 years,
Ernie. They have the travel bug and have visited
six of the seven continents, incorporating
downhill skiing, snorkeling, and river and ocean
cruising. While she has visited many of the
National Parks, her favorites are Yosemite and
the Grand Tetons. Paris and London are
beloved cities she continues to enjoy.
Doris loves mysteries, and
reads nearly one a day, but
thrillers and espionage, as
well as any well-written
of authors
fiction, may appear in her
to-read pile. She is also a
long-time member of the
volunteer organizing committee
of the Literary Women’s Festival
of Authors here in Long Beach.

For all of our valued Super
Friends a change has been
made in the procedure of
choosing ‘Honor Books’ &
Branches. In the future, librarians will make their
selections of Honor Books & Branches where they
are most needed. This process will enable them to
quickly choose a book(s) from their present Wish
List and will prevent duplicates from going to the
same Branches. Super Friends will be notified of the
title(s) selected and in what Branch they’ve been
placed. Their names will appear in the next Friends’
Newsletter. Again, we thank you ever so much for
your continued support,.

Our speaker this year will be Sandy Banks, former columnist for the LA
Times. Watch for registration information that will be coming out soon.
M
Sandy Banks wrote for the Los Angeles Times for 36 years. She served
as reporter, editor, editorial writer and internship director. But most of
us know her from her twice-weekly personal columns which focused on
private lives, public policy and people who inspire and infuriate us.

She left the Times at the end of 2015. Many readers followed her life arc
and the experiences of raising her girls in Los Angeles after her husband died 23 years ago. Banks,

Recording Secretary
Barbara is the newest
member of the Friends Board,
succeeding Elizabeth Andrew
as Recording Secretary. She
happens to be a neighbor
of Eleanore Schmidt, the
former Director of Library
Services, who introduced
her to the Friends in 2009.
Initially, Barbara worked a
table at the Mark Twain and
Dana branches to recruit volunteers for the
Friends; later, she helped develop the
database to communicate members via email.
As Recording Secretary,
Barbara takes notes and
publishes Minutes of the
monthly board meetings. She
also participates in many
ad-hoc committees as needed.
Barbara considers herself a
true Long Beach girl. She
attended Burbank and
Cubberly elementary schools,
DeMille Junior High, and
graduated from Millikan High
School before earning her
journalism degree from Cal
State Long Beach. Her first
library was Alamitos; she and her mother
regularly checked out books from Los Altos
and then El Dorado; and in college Bayshore
was her favorite.
Now living in Bixby Knolls,
Barbara regularly visits the
Dana Branch. She is always
looking for new authors –
especially mysteries and
historical novels – but she
also enjoys re-reading Louisa May Alcott
classics. Barbara recently retired as a
business analyst in the IT industry, and is
enjoying having more time to read, work in
her garden, and spend time with her
husband Edward and their yellow lab, Lucas.
She recently joined the board for the Long
Beach Festival of Authors, and is looking
forward to this year’s Festival. In addition,
Barbara and her husband travel regularly to
Western Europe (Paris is a favorite city);
they also enjoy the theatre and concerts at
the Hollywood Bowl.
BLANCHE COLLINS FORUM
LUIS RODRIGUEZ spoke at
the BLANCHE COLLINS
FORUM on February 27, at
the Main Library. The event
was attended by 200+
audience members. Luis
Rodriguez is the current
poet laureate of Los Angeles
and an award-winning writer,
Louis Rodriguez and poet, journalist, and critic.
Bernice
His memoir won a Carl
Van Steenbergen,
Sandburg Literary Award
former President of and a New York Times
the Friends
Notable Book. His life
story illustrates the toil
and time it takes to rise above poverty,
gangs, alcohol, and drugs. He signed copies
of his books after the program. The
comment heard most after his presentation
was “Inspiring”.
