President’s Message Spring 2010
I have enjoyed the office as your State President since our fall meeting
and have been introduced to some of the different tasks associated with
this job. Your previous Presidents have performed and complemented
these offices. Hopefully I will also finish to their approval.
We have had a wonderful educational seminar (Magnolia Educational
Treasures) in Panama City Beach Florida recently, with an attendance of
about 120 including the vendors at their booths. The speakers were exceptional and the accommodations were some of the best I have had
the pleasure to use. The weather was on the “cool” side, but the sunshine and beautiful moonlight evenings helped to sway your mind to a
happier thought.
Our state society is embarking upon the task of remodeling our state
pin. Martha Duncan, MT of Columbia, TN is spearheading this project
and let me say it is going to be a pin that all TNSSAMT members would
be proud to wear. We hope they will be completed and ready for sale in
time for the National AMT Convention in Las Vegas 2010.
I would be doing all readers an injustice if I failed to mention the upcoming Fall Meeting in Memphis, TN. So many of the speakers have a
connection to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and that facility is definitely a
working of our Lord’s hands.
Please find a few days from your busy schedule and make the trip to
Las Vegas, but definitely make the shorter trip to Memphis, neither trip
will disappoint you.
Don’t forget Vegas never sleeps and Memphis can’t be surpassed on its
“Blues and Barbecue”.
I am looking forward to meeting more of my
TNSSAMT Family and sharing the many
smiles and “war stories” of our years in the
Medical Laboratory Profession.

Editor’s Message
As I write the editors message for this edition of our journal, it is with a
heavy heart. The weekend of May 1st & 2nd started off as any other
weekend with the hustle and bustle of a busy metropolitan city, but at
the end of that weekend there was disaster, death and destruction!
The weather has not been too kind to any of us. Terrible tornado’s and
torrential winds and rain has devastated the map from Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky.
Nashville and Middle Tennessee has taken a devastating hit. Rain totals
reaching anywhere from 15-21 inches depending on where you live in
Nashville and around the surrounding areas. Officially the airport got I
believe 13.55 inches of rain. That would be equal to 13.5 feet of snow
if it were to come down as that type of precipitation. The Cumberland
River crested 12 feet above flood stage at 51.9 feet. Nashville and its
surrounding suburbs suffered massive flooding, loss of life and billions
of dollars in property damage. Flood waters from the Cumberland River
inundated the Opryland Hotel, The Grand Ole Opry House, Opry Mills
Mall, The Schermerhorn Symphony Center, The Bridgestone Arena
(Home of the NHL Predators), Country Music Hall of Fame and LP Field
(Home to the NFL Titans). Famed Second Avenue, home to many eateries and honky tonks were swallowed up by the Cumberland River as
well. The Harpeth River which has a reputation for overflowing its
banks, was responsible for perhaps the worst of the flooding as it devastated Bellevue, one of the hardest hit areas.
Tennessee is called the Volunteer State and for good reason. Once the
waters started to recede, the good people of Tennessee did just that,
VOLUNTEER. Shelters were set up, meals were prepared, money was
collected, clothes and shoes were provided and water was handed out.
People from all over came to help because it was the only thing they
could do. People working together to help those in need. A true act
of love. A true definition of a volunteer.
We may have been tossed around a bit but our spirit remains intact.
Tennessee will get through this and together we will recover.
We are keeping you all in our thoughts and prayers.

District Councillor’s Message Spring 2010
I will be glad when spring finally gets here, because I am tired of the cold weather.
Well with spring around the corner it looks like the Council will have another busy
year. Today marks one year from the miracle on the Hudson and it was so entertaining
to have Jeffery Skiles to attend our National convention last year. He talked about how
important teamwork along with training and following procedures made the miracle
that took place on January 15th into the Hudson River. Speaking of National, it will be
at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort Spa at Summerlin on July 12-17, 2010. Make
plans to attend now. Also, I would like to remind the southern states to make plans to
attend the Magnolia conference February 25-27, 2010. The program will be on the website soon and it looks great with 20 hours of continuing education.
I must commend Diane Powell and the home office staff for selecting this beautiful site
for our 2010 National Convention taking place July 12th thru 17th . I promise you that
you will not be disappointed with this selection. The grounds are beautiful and the
views from your rooms are spectacular. While I’m telling you about the resort; I urge
all attendees to visit the “Rewards Counter” located in the casino. Get a “Rampant Rewards” card. Even if you don’t gamble, this card will get you discounts on meals every
day, plus other advantages.
Diane reported to the Council that the program is 90% complete. There will be 2 workshops
taking place on Monday. The Friday night entertainment will be a dinner show with some
excellent impersonators “The Ratpack is Back“. The leadership conference held on Thursday of that week promises to be very educational for the State officers. The Council has
obtained the services of three speakers which I believe will be of much help to all of the
officers of each state. There will be a shuttle service from the airport for $32.00 which is
cheaper than $60.00 one way for a taxi. Look for details in the next AMT Event publication
coming soon.
They have selected Miami, Florida for the 2011 convention site. It will be a joint meeting
with CASMET. National Dental Assistant week is March 7th thru 13th. National Medical
Laboratory week is April 18th thru 24th. Take time to promote your profession, you have
earned the kudos.
Chris Damon reported to the Council that AMT has hired on a part time basis, Camille
Murray as Education Manager. She will be working to develop online CEU opportunities
along with different ways to obtain CEU’s.
Kathy Cilia, our Marketing Manager, has been very busy spreading AMT around the world.
She urges AMT members to go to the AMT website and view the different web home sites
from various states. Home office is waiting to help any state wanting to set up individual
state web sites.
I plan to attend the Magnolia and the Carolina Clinical Connection this spring and I can’t
wait to see my old friends and look forward to meeting new ones. I look forward to see you
at National.

A Delegate Report
By Kaye Tschop, MT (AMT)
The AMT National Conference was held in Minneapolis, Minnesota June 22-27, 2009.
What a great meeting! I don’t know how Diane Powell does it but every year she selects the site for our meeting and every year the selection and location is fun, interesting
and oh so enjoyable. Martha Duncan and I had a great road trip up and back as we traveled up to the northern part of the country. We were both fascinated by these huge
windmills generating energy. There were hundreds of them out in the middle of
farmer’s fields. Of course I had to take a picture!
The meeting got underway with Jeff Skiles as the Keynote Address speaker. He was
one of the pilots that helped land the crippled US Airways jet in the middle of the Hudson River. Everyone was listening to Jeff as he explained how teamwork, attention to
detail and repetitive work were the key to bringing everyone safely back to land even if
it was in the middle of the Hudson River.
I attended numerous excellent lectures like Aspirin: “What Your Doctors
and Drug Companies Aren’t Telling You”, “Integrative Pain Management”, Spanish 101 for Health Professionals, Motivational Skills, Point
of Care Testing and Cord Blood Testing to Patient Safety in the Physicians Office. There was subject matter to peak everyone’s interests.
The Welcome Party Tuesday evening was a blast. There was food and drink, dancing
and plenty of time to catch up with our AMT friends and family. From the looks of
everyone as I scanned the room, they were all having a great time! Thursday evening’s
banquet was a time for recognition to all of the AMT members who have worked so
hard throughout the year. There were committee meetings to attend, editors workshops,
credentialing to complete, District meetings, Town Hall Sessions and finally AMT’s
Business Meeting.
But wait there is the Friday Night Social – the dinner cruise on the paddle wheel boat
down the St. Croix River.
Are you tired yet? Well we sure had a power packed week of lectures, work, entertainment and fellowship. I still don’t know how Diane Powell accomplishes such a wonderful week for everyone but why don’t you join me July 12-17, 2010 at the JW Marriott Las Vegas Resort and Spa at Summerlin for Diane’s next great meeting. I can’t
wait to see what all she has planned next for us! See you there!!

My co-ordinates are 35°36'54"N 87°2'40"W35.615°N 87.04444°W. I am located in the southwest corner of my state. I have a total area of 29.6 square
miles (76.7sq km), all being land. My elevation is 637 (194 meters) feet above
sea level and my population is approximately 34,500.
Settlement of my land began in 1806, I was Organized in 1807 and Incorporated in 1817. I am neatly tucked along the banks of the Duck River. In fact
the Duck River is sacred to most founding Native American tribes east of the
Mississippi River.
My nicknames are C-Town and Mule Town. My Motto is Old South Charm, New
South Progress. I am the county seat in Maury County and have seven towns
(including me) in my county. They are Culleoka, Hampshire, Mount Plesant,
Sante Fe, Spring Hill and Williamsport.
I host an annual week-long celebration the first week of April that began 170
years ago as Breeder’s Day. Back in the 1840’s it was only a one day event but
over time the name was changed to Mule Day and is now a week-long celebration of all things related to mules. I am the self proclaimed Mule Capital of the
world. Over 200,000 visitors come to my town every year to take in the sites,
sounds and excitement of Mule Day. Why you might see square-dancing, horse
shows, craft festivals, lumberjack competitions or even a Liar’s Contest. The
Mule Day Parade takes place on Saturday with lots of food, fun and excitement.
James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States, moved to Maury County
in 1806. Samuel Polk built a home know today as the Polk Home. Other Historic Homes in my city/county are Rattle and Snap, Rippavilla, Rally Hill, Elm
Springs, Webster House, Oaklawn, Ferguson Hall, Haynes Haven, Hunter
House, Walnut Grove, Whipporwill Hills, Vine Hill and Liberty Hall.
There are eight Historic Sites in Maury County. They are Maury County Courthouse, Zion Church, St. John’s Church, The Athenaeum, Greenwood Cemetery,
Natchez Trace, McCain’s C. P. Church and The Columbia Arsenal.
There have been numerous movies filmed in my city or county. They are Hannah Montana: The Movie, Bailey, Daltry Calhoun, Stuey and The Green Mile. I
am also home to many notable residents. NASCAR drivers Coo Coo Marlin,
Steadman Marlin and Sterling Marlin. All-Star Major League Baseball player
Dan Uggla of the Florida Marlins. Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers, and Medal
of Honor United States Navy sailor John Harlan Willis.

National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week
By Kaye Tschop, MT (AMT)
A very special National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week was celebrated
at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System Nashville Campus. This year we
invited many of our retired and former
laboratory workers back for a luncheon
and to see the newly renovated lab. It
was great to see everybody and to
catch up on old times. Why we even had
a previous lab worker stop by that was in
town on business that now works in Washington, DC. How great was that? We had
food functions and games planned for
every day and an ice cream social provided by our supervisors culminated our
celebration.
We had lab
chair
races, tugof-war and
a fashion show all presented down the
center isle of the core lab. Everyone
laughed and watched as employees
decorated themselves with key supplies
unique to their department. The Murfreesboro campus celebrated their week
in fine fashion as well. They had daily
food funcGroup Photo of the Occasion!
tions and a
pizza party that was enjoyed by all. Why
they even enjoyed a lively game of shuffle
board down the back isle. Gee, I wonder
what they used for a puck? A great time
was had by all.
It is our week to celebrate Medical Technology - “The Pride of the Profession”.
Here are a few of our highlights!

“An Adventure into the World of the Unknowns”
A new place for the meeting, same city as 2008 but without 9 inches of
rain! The nighttime temps for two consecutive nights were in the upper
twenty’s! That’s cold for Panama City Beach Florida! Now that is classified as a world of the unknowns.
The Majestic Beach Resort was probably one of the best we have used,
that was attended by myself, very clean, reasonably priced, and the view
of the ocean, beach, sunrise and sunsets were not to be compared to any
other.
Our attendance could have been slightly better, but with the late publication of the speakers and topics, we considered it a success. A lot of hard
work went into this meeting, great speakers, good topics, door prizes
that can’t be topped anywhere we have met, and never forget the happy
smiles and great fellowship that was felt by all involved.
Our Board of Director’s meeting was a lengthy one, but we used Kaye
Tschop, Martha Duncan, Agnes Oslica and Veronica Larson’s room for our
meeting. They always furnish lots of refreshments and “goodies” for
munching while the meeting is going on. Usually this meeting is on
Thursday evening at the start of the Seminar and usually last about one
hour, but this time it lasted over two hours. We made the final selection
for delegates for the national convention (in Las Vegas) and made other
decisions that was pertinent to the betterment of our society.
If you have been putting off going to this meeting, then let me suggest a
different idea. Come and be a part of our TNSSAMT family and realize
we are the organization that needs our members to be active, not just a
few. It’s kind of like a family that doesn’t function well if one of the
members doesn’t participate in decisions, conversations, or doesn’t show
the personality that a dedicated Medical Professional will express, smile!
I believe the next meeting will be in Mississippi around the Biloxi area.
This will give all our members a better selection of social things to do and
relax. Check out some of our pictures from this years Magnolia Educational Treasures Meeting. They are on pages 12 and 13 of this edition.
Hope to see you at the Magnolia Educational Treasures in 2012.

Passwords
By Kaye Tschop, MT (AMT)
A T T E N T I O N !!!
Did you know - almost 50% of computer users select their passwords using names, dictionary words, slang words, or trivial passwords (consecutive digits, adjacent keyboard keys, etc)?
Poor password selection can have you paying serious consequences.
People tend to use the same passwords that they use on Facebook, bank
accounts and work computers. These passwords are easily cracked.
People tend to use names and numbers that are easy to remember like
their husband or wife’s name, a birth date, anniversary date, dog or cat’s
name or their children’s name. A hacker, with very little effort, can gain
access to your accounts and steal your identity. It happens at least once
every second.
Do you know the ten most commonly used passwords?
1. 123456
2. 12345
3. 123456789
4. Password
5. iloveyou
6. princess
7. rockyou
8. 1234567
9. 12345678
10. abc123
Password patterns have not changed much over the last 20 years. The
shorter and simpler the password makes the user susceptible to basic
forms of cyber attacks known as “brute force attacks” A “strong” password consists of upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers and/or
special characters. The more of a combination your password is, the better and harder it is to crack.
It’s Time Everyone Takes
Password Selection…
Seriously!

A Delegate Report
By Walter Parsons, MT (AMT)
The Northwest flight on Saturday to Minneapolis was non-stop and on time - no extra
flying time and correct destination city arrival. It did not take long for me to shuttle
myself to the Mall of America. I had never been there and had to see for myself
what all the talk was about. It is BIG and unique with all the amusement rides inside
the mall for the young at heart to enjoy.
Sunday I attended the EQS committee meeting 9am-3pm. That evening I went with
an AMT group to the mall for entertainment and dinner. By week's end, I had made
several trips to the mall.
Monday afternoon I attended a workshop that caught my eye on the program Spanish 101. I will learn to speak Espanol today! I had been to several Spanish
speaking countries so I thought this will really be interesting, but you don't really
have to leave this country to hear or speak Spanish.
Well, this workshop had a different twist and turned out to be so practical for everyday medical situations we encounter for the Spanish speaking communities whether
in a physician's office or hospital environment.
The four hour workshop provided key Spanish phrases for symptoms and conditions,
translations of body parts (anatomy), illnesses-basic terms needed to communicate.
Hand signals - the universal language - were incorporated in the communication
process.
Most hospitals in major cities have access to Spanish speaking employees or on-call
personnel but if you are outside these areas, the workshop offered very practical procedures to help you to communicate with someone that is sick. One suggestion was
to have a flyer or a 3-ring binder with English words on one side of the page and the
Spanish words across from it. Here are a few examples:
Anatomy:
ankle
arm
heart
tooth
head
el tobill
el brazo
el Corazon
el diente
la cabeza
Symptoms and Conditions:
broken bone
bruise
indigestion
abscess
migraine
un hueso roto
una contusion
una indigestion
un absceso
una jaqueca
Illnesses:
asthma
el asma
cancer
el cancer
flu
la gripe
gout
la gota
appendicitis la apendicitis
These represent samples but hopefully you get the idea. The patient only has to
point or identify their complaint and then you can begin treatment while waiting on
your translator to arrive.
This workshop was created by Dr. Naomi Melvin, MT(AMT) and Jose Guethon, MT
(AMT) from Florida to help educate members on basic communications with Hispanic
groups and families.
