With its beautiful and ideal setting, this school proposes a balanced program for spiritual, mental, physical, and social development. Thus, it offers to the youth of noble and worthwhile purposes the best in education. May this school continue to grow into a powerful institution for good. Grunke Leadership Scholarship F O U N D E R O F M O N T E R E Y B AY AC A D E M Y ELDER LEAL GRUNKE IS THE FOUNDING FATHER of Monterey Bay Academy. Elder Grunke had a vision that this former World War II military base, Camp McQuaide, could become a Seventhday-Adventist Academy unlike no other. It’s geographical location and opportunities for industry seemed ideal. At the time, not many shared his vision for Camp McQuaide. Elder Grunke’s perseverance paid off when the United States government agreed to give the base to the Central California Conference at no cost. When Elder Grunke, his wife, and daughter arrived at the base gate, one last soldier remained to hand off the key to the Grunke’s. The soldier got in his car and drove away while the Grunke’s moved onto the 379-acre grounds as its only occupants. This scholarship was established by Elder Grunke’s only child, Darlene Grunke, to honor her father’s vision. Grunke Scholars are recognized for their character, Christian dedication, and vision for the future. SPEYER A L U M N U S 19 75 | FA C U LT Y 19 8 7– 2 0 12 JON SPEYER came to Monterey Bay Academy in 1968, growing up on the MBA campus, and was a four-year student graduating in 1975. In 1987, his dream of teaching Bible to high school students was realized when he accepted a Bible teaching position at MBA. His passion for educating youth was equally as strong after 25 years as it was from the moment he started. He always said that until God led him to do otherwise, his mission in life would remain the same—communicating the unconditional love of Jesus to youth. This gift was established by Jon’s wife, Kinzie ’76, and their three sons, Ryan ’00, Brandon ’03, and Jordan ’06, after Jon’s untimely death on December 31, 2012. With Romans being one of Jon’s favorite classes to teach as well as his favorite book of the Bible, the only criteria for receiving this gift is that the student has completed the Romans Bible class and has begun to grasp its meaning. It is the desire of the Speyer family that the student who receives this free gift will begin to understand the unconditional love of Jesus and the free gift of salvation that Christ gives to us. For I am convinced that neither life nor death, neither angels nor demons…nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:38–39 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.
