BUSINESS HOURS
AFTER
at the Eccentric Club
The Chamber’s Business After Hours at Gloversville’s Eccentric Club
was a success! 175 Chamber members enjoyed great food and refreshments and networking. Thank you to sponsors MacKenzie and Tallent,
Attorneys at Law and Lorraine C. Diamond, Esq. Pictured, from left, are
NBT Bank’s Mike Pepe, Montgomery County United Way’s Fred Quist,
who was the Chamber’s Mystery Member for the evening, Nancy Nigro, Patriot Federal Bank ($50 Mystery Member winner), and Chamber
President Mark Kilmer. Nancy won the $50 because she was the 15th
person to shake hands with Fred. Congratulations Nancy - it pays to
network! n
From left Fred Olbrych and Dave Groff from Universal
Warehousing; Kate Wolf, Patriot Federal Bank and
Natalie Olbrych, also from Universal Warehousing.
Chamber Hosts DiNapoli Breakfast
Chamber members enjoyed an informative talk by NYS Comptroller
Thomas DiNapoli on Monday, November 18 at the Holiday Inn Johnstown-Gloversville. Attendees were provided with the opportunity to
speak personally with Comptroller DiNapoli and his staff, but also to
network with Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk, Assemblyman Marc Butler, and
a number of Supervisors who were either newly elected or in office.
The Chamber is always looking for ways to connect our members with
elected officials and this was a great way to do that. n
Senator Cecilia Tkaczyk, Jim Landrio (FM Chamber
Board Member, Holiday Inn), Comptroller DiNapoli,
and FM Chamber President/CEO Mark Kilmer.
SPEED
LEADS NET WORKING
The Chamber Leads Group hosted a very successful Speed Networking event at 518 Grille in Amsterdam on November 21. 25 members,
and non-members, attended and got a lot of leads and referrals from
the event. Refreshments were provided by 518 Grille and they were
gracious hosts for the event. Next Speeds Networking event is a dinner
event at the Holiday Inn Johnstown-Gloversville in January. Watch for
details and take advantage of this great networking opportunity. n

Dear Member,
We are now well into the Holiday Season and I am
sure that many of you are still struggling to find the perfect gift for everyone on your list. The answer is quite
simple…why not consider a gift of Chamber Checks? Their versatility makes them
the perfect gift for those who are hard to shop for. They are accepted in over 100
local CHAMBER MEMBER BUSINESSES…from grocery and department stores,
to gift shops, liquor stores, auto repair centers, and everything in between. And,
more importantly, the “Buy Local” aspect makes them even more special. When
giving Chamber Checks, not only are you supporting local businesses, but you
keep the sales tax dollars earned upon redemption in our communities. And, what
about our local businesses trying to decide what to purchase for their employees
or customers for the holidays? Chamber Checks are the easiest and most convenient means to tell your employees how much you appreciate them. We can
accommodate any size order in any denominations!
So, please consider being part of this great “Buy Local”program. Chamber
Checks can be purchased in any of the three Patriot Federal Bank branches (Johnstown, Amsterdam, Canajoharie), at Ruby & Quiri in Johnstown, or at either Chamber office (Gloversville, Amsterdam). If you have any questions, please call the
Chamber staff at (518) 725-0641. Give the gift that is a gift to the entire business
community – CHAMBER CHECKS.
Well, Election Day is now behind us. You’ve cast your ballot and you think that
you have fulfilled your civic duty, but that’s not the case. Our responsibilities as citizens do not end at the ballot box, we must all continue to be part of the democratic
process.
This is done by the continuous monitoring of our elected officials, whether they
were your choice or not, and by holding their feet to the fire to honor the campaign
pledges made. Let’s hope that our newly elected leaders don’t just say the things
necessary to get hired, and then choose another course. We have to hold them
accountable for all they say and do so make a point of carrying on the process. As
community members we should always be aware of what’s happening in our communities. Stay on top of the news, go to public meetings and forums, it’s too easy
to complain…we must all be part of the solution.
On another note, I would be remiss if I did not take time out to congratulate one
of our members, Grandma Millie’s Bakery in Johnstown, on their selection to be on
the television show, TLC’s Bakery Boss. My understanding is that the process of
selection to the show is difficult and that a business must pass many tests with a
great amount of vetting. Kudos to Chauncey McCormick and her family for doing a
great job! Hopefully, this will propel their business to a whole new level… and just
maybe the Fulton and Montgomery region attached to their coattails. Remember
the Beekman Boys!
Thank you

Funds and Funding Through
The New York State Comptroller’s Office
and New York Business Development Corporation
NY In-State Investment Program
Nearly $400 million is available for investing in New York-based
companies through the New York State Common Retirement
Funds’ In-State Private Equity Program. Through the In-State Program, the New York State Common Retirement Fund (the Fund)
has established long-term partnerships with 18 private equity managers from around the state who invest in companies that require
capital for growth, to refinance ownership, or for early stage investment. The program is designed to provide investment returns
consistent with the risk of private equity by making investments that
meet fiduciary standards.
In addition to providing the Fund with a 20 percent internal rate of
return on fully exited investments in the last five years, the program
has helped general jobs and private sector investment in New York.
Since its inception, the program has helped create or retain nearly
4,000 jobs across New York, leveraging $6.7 billion in capital. The
program has proven to be an important contributor to the State’s
economy by making capital available to small businesses.
The program’s concept is a simple one: if you’re prepared to
make a commitment to New York and can state a compelling case
for investment, the Fund will look to make a commitment to you and
your business.

FM Student Speaks at the
U.N. about Survival
On November 12, Fulton-Montgomery Community College student
Grace Rutagengwa was an invited guest at the United Nations in New York City to speak about the Rwanda Genocide, which took the lives of
her loved ones, and tell how athletics helped her cope with this tragedy.
Rutagengwa was seated alongside cyclist legend Jock Boyer; author
and journalist Philip Gourevitch; and director and producer of the documentary Rising from Ashes T.C. Johnstone. The documentary follows
Rwanda’s first cycling team, which was assembled and coached by Boyer,
as they set out against incredible odds to become a symbol of hope and
promise for a country marred by the 1994 genocide. The film illustrates
the therapeutic power of sports but also carries a message of faith and redemption for the individual team members, their coach, and their country.
In the post filming discussion, Rutagengwa, a former member of
Rwanda’s National basketball team and a former member of FM’s Lady
Raiders basketball team, shared how sports helped her to recover from
the trauma of losing her own parents and siblings in the genocide that
claimed more than 800,000 Tutsi lives. A poised Rutagengwa told the
audience and multiple national radio stations how sports provided her the
discipline, life skills, and feeling of family that was missing when she lost
her entire family in 1994. Additionally, like the members of the Rwandan
cycling team, sports provided a distraction from traumatic memories and
helped foster healing and forgiveness.
“Grace was the of the nicest girls to ever play for me in my 15 years
at FM,” said Athletic Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Kevin Jones
who accompanied Grace to the U.N. along with Robin DeVito, FM’s Accessibility Coordinator, who is in the process of adopting Grace. “To persevere through the tragic events that she encountered in her life is a testament to her strength and courage as a survivor. She has touched my life
forever and I am grateful for the time we have shared. I only hope that her
remarkable story will continue to touch other lives. Grace need not worry
about how far she will go in life, she has already traveled further than
many of us can only imagine.”
The event drew more visitors than could be accommodated
by the 550 seat U.N. Conference Room. For more information visit

Mountain Valley Hospice Launches Campaign
Mountain Valley Hospice has launched a new campaign to raise funds for its programs and
services that assist residents of Fulton County, Western Montgomery County, Southern Saratoga
County and Northern Hamilton County.
Recycled four and five gallon water jugs are being placed at business locations in the region to
collect funds that will support services and educational programs provided by MVH. In providing
care to persons with life-limiting illnesses, the goal of hospice is to alleviate symptoms – physical,
emotional, spiritual, financial, and social – enabling patients and families to concentrate on living
as comfortably and fully as possible. Patient centered care allows control to remain with the patient
and those supporting them. Mountain Valley Hospice provides care that is palliative, holistic and
supportive.
While hospice care is routinely provided in your home, circumstances sometimes require that
care be delivered in an alternate setting. For this reason, hospice care may also be provided in the
following locations: your home, acute care hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, group/

St. Mary’s Hosts Labyrinth
The St. Mary’s Center for Complementary Therapies is hosting The Labyrinth, A Meditative
Walk into Advent on Monday, December 9, 2013 from 6-7:30 pm in the Carondelet Pavilion Auditorium, 380 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
What is The Labyrinth? The Labyrinth is a form of walking meditation, an ancient spiritual act
of pilgrimage symbolizing one’s walk with God or journey through life. The walk is more about the
journey than the destination, and more about “being” rather than “doing”. All people are welcome to
participate in The Labyrinth; talking a meditative walk does not require that you bring an exclusive
set of beliefs, only yourself.
If you are interested in participating in The Labyrinth Walk, please contact Sr. Rita Jean DuBrey, Director of the Center for Complementary Therapies at (518) 841-7146 prior to December 6.
There is a nominal fee of $15.00 to register and pre-registration is required. n

Too busy for after-hours networking or need some practice?
Have the need for speed? Then SPEED LEADS is for you!
Unlike Speed Dating, where you’re looking for that
love connection, Speed Networking is where you will

The outcome being that these connections will lead
to follow up meetings and future referrals.
Hosted by the Chamber Leads Group
SPEED LEADS is a fun, exciting and
effective way to make a lot of connections in
a very unique environment. Words of Advice:
Prepare and practice your elevator pitch
(elevator pitch—the speedy, concise summation
of what your company makes or does).
Bring your business cards. Relax and be yourself.
Follow up afterward- it is essential to your success!
