COBBLES TOPS THE CHARTS
FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Cobbles Elementary has gone three-for-three in Buffalo Business
First’s academic rankings of public elementary schools in the Rochester
Area for the third year in a row.
Cobbles tops the list of 161 public elementary schools across the eight
-county region. Click here for a quick countdown of the top 50 schools.
This marks the fifth straight year that a Penfield school has ranked in
first place. Scribner Road Elementary School was the top-rated elementary school in the Rochester Area in 2011 and 2012, before Cobbles began its streak in 2013.
According to a separate Business First analysis of four years of test data, Cobbles earned first place because of its outstanding performances
in two core subjects, English and math.

Message from the Co-Presidents
Dear Cobbles Friends and Families!
It has been another GREAT school year with Cobbles in the news again for the 3rd year in a row as ranking #1 for area elementary schools! We
are so proud of the Cobbles Experience our kids receive here. At Cobbles, it isn’t just about the academics. We have the greatest teachers, the
greatest administrators, the greatest staff, the greatest parents, and as a result...the greatest kids.
We have been able to offer several wonderful programs thanks to the participation of all of these people in order to support this excellent curriculum. Our kids are prepared for middle school when they leave Cobbles and go on to do great things. Thank you all so much for your involvement in this school year’s programs. We have opportunities for involvement next year. If you are returning or would like to volunteer, a list of
open positions or committees that need support can be found on p. 7 of this newsletter.
We would like to thank everyone for helping to make this year a great one. Please watch your E-News this week for information on ordering the
school supply kits this year if you are interested.

Star Teacher and
Staff Stories Needed for
Appreciation Lunch
The PTA sponsors the Staff and Teacher Appreciation Lunch at the end of every school
year. This year, the event will be held on June 25. We are so lucky to have such dedicated teachers and staff at Cobbles that give so much of their time towards the education of
our children.
We would love to share some stories about times teachers or staff went above and beyond
for your child or the class or Cobbles. If you have a positive story to tell, please click below to share your story. We are working on a creative way to share these “Star Stories” at
the lunch in June.
Share a Star Teacher or Staff Story
We would love to give a door prize to all teachers and staff as thank you gifts. The PTA
has plans to provide some special door prizes. But if you have a gift that you would like
to donate for a door prize please email Shannon Cleverley-Thompson at [email protected] (any value is welcome). You can also contact Shannon if you would
be interested in making a dessert for the lunch or loaning us a big cooler for the beverages.
Thanks so much for helping us make sure the teachers and staff at
Cobbles know how much they are appreciated and valued by parents
and the PTA.

Earth Day Triangle Treasure Hunt a Success!
A special thanks goes out to everyone who participated in the First Annual Earth Day Triangle Treasure Hunt. Together
we kept over 900 recyclable plastic items out of the landfills in just one week! Winners of the contest were determined by
dividing the total number of items collected by the number of students in the class, which resulted in an average number
of recycled items per student.
In 1st place, Mrs. Koestner's 3rd grade class, with an average of 9
items per student.
Great work, everyone. Now that you know how easy it is to recycle plastic, make a habit of doing it every day. Keep showing your
Cobbles Character by feeding the Green Monster and making
Cobbles a cleaner, greener place to be!

Calling All Parent Leaders...
So many events at Cobbles take place and succeed because of support from the school board, administrators,
and of course, parent volunteers.
The Children's Agenda, an independent advocacy organization working for policies and resources to improve the well being of Monroe County's children, is now offering a parent advocacy training program
called the Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI).
The Parent Leadership Training Institute (PLTI) is fielding a class starting in September for a 20 week 4
hour/evening parent advocacy training class. Child care and food are provided.
The PLTI course includes:

Becoming familiar with city, state and federal law;

Understanding policy and municipal budgets;

Understanding personal history and its impact on perceptions of leadership;

Thriving and working with diversity;

Assessing and defining problems - thinking critically;

Using the media;

Public speaking;

Using benchmarks and outcome measures;

Forming useful coalitions and building community; and

Working with and engaging opposing sides.
Four phases of training
PLTI has four phases of training for parents, led by a team of 3 local, high quality facilitators with credibility in the community.

A retreat to develop group and define mission;

A 10-week course on parent leadership and strengthening connections among people of
different backgrounds;

A 10-week study on local politics, policy, and media; and

A local project to practice the learning.
The course culminates with a graduation, and an invitation to graduates to join the alumni group for ongoing support and collaboration.
For more information, visit the course website.

Harvest of the Month
April 22nd Harvest of the Month: Onions
Great job Cobbles kitchen and Head Cook Gail for another great month of
HOTM. Thanks to April volunteers: Davina Domenico, Julie Paul, Deb
Sobko for your enthusiasm. We love adding new volunteers for this year
so feel free to join us!
Harvest of the Month introduced our students to vegetables that they
may not have tried with samples prepared by Gail. Each month, the kids
tasted the samples and received a sticker for trying it.
In April, Gail roasted/seasoned Onions. Surprisingly, the kids enjoyed trying them.
We love our continued successful year for HOTM!
If you are interested in helping, we can work around your availability.
Please
contact Julie Paul at [email protected].
Our Harvest of the Month 2014-15 coordinators are Julie Paul and Davina
