ATHLETE OF THE WEEK NEPINAK LEADS TIGERS TO FIRST WIN IN 2 YEARS The St. John’s Tigers football team won its first game in three years thanks to a dominant performance by Rylee Nepinak. In a 29-7 win over the Maples Marauders on Sept. 12, the Grade 12 five-foot-six running back ran for 285 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Nepinak’s outstanding performance earned him the Tire Recycle Urban Athlete of the Week SPORTS STAR MASSEY’S MASON BENNETT NAMED CTV SPORTSTAR Versatile lineman Mason Bennet of the Vincent Massey Trojans has been selected as the CTV sportstar of the Week. This versatile grade 10 student has drawn interst from college teams from across the US and Canada Talent runs in the MacNeil family Victoria MacNeil is a six-foot, 17-year-old young woman who’s totally at ease on a volleyball court. She just started Grade 12 at Oak Park High School and is very excited for what will be a very big year for her. “I am taking it one step at a time but I would like to play at the university level.” Victoria started playing both basketball and volleyball, but eventually worked her way to only playing volleyball. “I was scouted by the SISU club team in Winnipeg last year which was put together by Chris Green,” she said. “Last year was my first year of club; this is my fourth year at Oak Park because I am in French immersion. I really enjoy playing volleyball, it feels natural to me.” Victoria’s parents are Brett and Anna, and she has an older sister, Courtney. Her father, Brett, enjoyed a long career as an offensive lineman in the CFL and played many years as a Winnipeg Blue Bomber. When I asked Victoria who her favourite athlete is, she said: “I look up to my dad for that.” Both of her parents have played a tremendous role in Victoria’s young sports career. “Anything I want to do, they back me up and have been there for me.” 9 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES OF THE YEAR SELECTED The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association announced the 2014 Jostens High School Athletes of the Year at a Media conference held June 26th at the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.
