City of Detroit hosts 2015 ELCA
Youth Gathering this month
This triannual high school event has traveled
to a number of different sites, where our
youth have experienced the love of Jesus in
unique and diverse ways. This month our 16
youth and 3 adult leaders will make their way
to the motor city for a life altering week in a
city that has seen its’ share of heartache and
hard times. The theme of this year’s
gathering is RISE UP Together! When the host city was announced
three years ago, there were some confused and concerned as to why
the ELCA would come to this place. One only has to stop and take a
look at the cross of Christ to find your answer. Please read this excerpt
from the gathering website which features an article on Why Detroit!”
Detroit, the host city for the 2015 ELCA Youth Gathering, is a diverse,
distinct city with a rich history. The birthplace of the car industry and
Motown music, Detroit also played a critical role in the underground
railroad and in the industrialization of America. Although the media
would have you believe Detroit is on the verge of collapse — its
residents know a different story.
The city they know, our host city, has faced and continues to face its
share of challenges. Yet there is a growing revitalization effort
underway, and we believe God is calling us to Detroit for the 2015
ELCA Youth Gathering to learn from and serve among our brothers and
sisters there.
Downtown Detroit, where the two main venues for the Gathering are
located, is a hub of vibrancy and activity. With new companies
headquartered downtown and more than 11,000 new employees
working and living in the city, Detroit is home to many young adults at
the beginning of their professional careers. With great architecture,
cultural opportunities and winning sports teams, Detroit has much to
offer visitors.

ELCA Youth Gathering continued...
The Detroit metro area is also the home to several faithful ELCA
congregations who are living out their faith in new and exciting ways.
Take Grace in Action, for instance. Grace in Action is an ELCA faith
community dedicated to reclaiming the mission of the church, being
transformed by God and each other and building a more just society for
all of God’s people. The ministries at Grace in Action are inspired by the
visions and dreams of people in the community: open mic night,
citizenship class, prayer group and more. That is just one story from
Detroit.
Detroit has much to teach us about being a part of what God is up to at
this time in our history. The story youth and their adult leaders will hear
there, and will proclaim there, is that Jesus endured death for us, and
Jesus rose from the grave in fulfillment of God’s plan, to make us worthy
in Christ, to write us into a new story in which we are free from our fears
of the powers of sin, death and the devil.
There are many people in Detroit who know experiences of death, and
there are many Lutherans, and brothers and sisters from partner
communions who stand alongside the citizens of Detroit with the cross,
proclaiming healing and wholeness in the midst of the death and
despair. God is calling us to bear witness to their story, and to his
creative and redeeming story of death and resurrection.
We will gather in Detroit in July 2015 to be inspired, encouraged,
strengthened, connected and sent out to do God’s work in the world.

Best Gift card, you have helped financially support our young people.
Another way you can join us on this journey is by checking out the night
time gatherings at Ford Field by viewing a “live stream” webcast. During
the gathering, July 15-19 visit www.elca.org/gathering and look for
“Watch this” to view. Look for a link off of our facebook page as well.
Finally, you can join us on this journey through your prayers. Please
keep us in your prayers, from our bus trip over there, to our day of
service in the community, as we meet new friends and companions and
as we experience the love and grace of Jesus during the week. Our
group includes youth: Katie Austin, Logan Budack, Holden Buie,
Matt Hale, Jill Heiser, Ashley Holland, Hannah Holland, Rachel
Jorgensen, Jenny Kling, Olivia Krahn-Bockhop, Kaden Lux, Katrina

Join Us in Saying Thanks to Brett
We know that Brett’s ministry among us has meant so much to so many.
Please join us in saying Thank You! Your prayers and words of

Oshkosh. Also, you can show your appreciation with a gift of money
which will be presented to Brett at the picnic. Any monetary contribution
that will be included in the church gift needs to be in the church office no
later than Sunday, July 19.
Please Register Soon for VBS
This August, Our Savior's will be partnering with Bristol Lutheran Church
for a fantastic vacation bible school experience. Counselors from Sugar
Creek Bible Camp will be leading this "day camp" for our kids. The
combined VBS will be August 3-6, from 9am-4pm. We are even offering
"before care" so you can drop your kids off as early as 8am. And it's
financially as reasonable as last year's morning only VBS thanks to our
churches working together.
Because of the increased hours, day camp is for kids entering 1st
through 5th grade. It's important to save your spot and register early
because we must cap the registration at 70 children. The information
sheet/early registration form is located on the ministry opportunity table.
Please pick up yours today.
As always, kids are encouraged to share this opportunity with their
friends. If you are interested in volunteering or housing a college-age
counselor, please sign up on the ministry opportunity table.

Youth Ministry
Confirmation Camp
Six middle school youth and Brett
attended a week-long confirmation camp
at Pine Lake back in June. The group
held bible studies, with the theme “A Love
that never ends,” centered on our
relationship with God and how God
connects to us and connects us with one another. Our youth
experienced a camp out in the woods, went swimming, learned new
camp songs, created in arts and crafts and more. This program is a
great way to build fellowship and experience Christ in a new and
exciting way. If you are interested in camping ministry, which offers the
camp experience for all ages, please see a brochure on the youth and
family table or visit www.crosswayscamps.org.

Columbus, WI on Friday, July 3, 2015 at 7:00pm. Join us for this fun
fellowship outing and invite your friends!
Don’t Forget “Dinner and a Movie”
This month our Dinner and a Movie selection will be
“Still Alice”, based on the novel by Lisa Genova.
Julianne Moore gives a gripping performance of Alice
Howland, a happily married woman with three grown
children and a renowned linguistics professor. When
Alice starts to forget words, she receives a diagnosis
of Early-Onset Alzheimer's Disease. Alice and her
family find their bonds thoroughly tested. Her
struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening,
heartbreaking, and inspiring.
We share a potluck meal at 6:30 and enjoy the movie afterwards.
Mark your calendar for Thursday, July 9 at 6:30. Bring a dish to pass.
Invite a friend. It will help us plan if you sign up on the ministry
opportunity table or email [email protected].
This Month it’s a Novel
Join the Spirited Book Club to discuss the only
novel written by Marcus Borg, Putting Away
Childish Things: A Tale of Modern Faith. This
book is an engaging way for readers to learn
about the important issues dividing Christians
today. Along the way, we join with the characters
to ask the hard questions such as what does the
Bible really teach? Who is Jesus? What is the
nature of faith today? This is a story that
promises to leave us different in the end than
when we started, as we learn how even in the
twenty-first century, God works in mysterious
ways.
In this story, we meet Kate—a popular religion professor at a liberal
arts college in a small Midwestern town who thinks her life is right on
track. She loves her job, is happy with her personal and spiritual life,
and her guilty pleasure consists of passing her afternoons at the local
pub with a pint of Guinness and a cigarette. Life is good. Kate is up
for tenure when it all starts to go wrong.
You can find this book on your own for your e-reader, get yourself a
library copy or buy it from Amazon. We will meet on Thursday, July 2
at 6:30 pm. Please sign up on the ministry opportunity table or email
your desire to read to [email protected]. Location is yet to
be determined. Watch for details in the Sabbath Crossroads.

Prayer Shawl Ministry a Blessing to Many
Did you know that we have a prayer shawl ministry that is steeped in
prayer from beginning to end. Our knitters begin the process by
knitting or crocheting a shawl. These knitters pray for the recipient of
the shawl with every knit or purl stitch. Then the prayer team, when a
recipient has been identified, prays over the shawl praying for healing
and a warm reception of the shawl. The prayers continue when the
recipient receives the shawl and may then pray on their own when
wrapped in its warmth. It’s a ministry immersed in prayer. At this time,
we would love to increase the shawls we give away. If you are
interested in this ministry and have this talent to share, please see
Pastor Krahn. (We even have yarn for more shawls.)
