ecember came
upon us swiftly and we are
excited to kick off the
season this December
with the instructor's
trip. Not only did we
have a wonderful
build up to the first trip to the mountain in December with the Dryland
Clinic, summer parties and meetings,
but we have also been very fortunate
to receive benefits from various organizations and benefactors. Our deepest appreciation goes out to them as
always.
We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season, and will have
safe and joyful ski season! !

SKI FUN STARTS IN JANUARY
DRYLAND CLINIC 2011
VICE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
MARINA SALLAWAY
SOO LEE
KEITH BONCHEK
s the days get shorter, our
hearts beat faster for the anticipation of upcoming season.
Dryland Clinic is a great start for
instructor volunteers to prepare this
year’s trips. On October 23rd, John
Melville Jr., J and Amanda Davis,
Darryl Coit and Susan, Michelle
McCarthy, and I were at Helen and
Chuck DeBerard’s beautiful Palos
Verdes home. Our Ski School Director,
John, led the clinic.
The theme was “Be safe, have
fun, and learn something”. The clinic
started with safety talks, covere d
reminding red flags, certification
process, instructor’s trip plans to winter driving tips.
Even though the Governor
did not sign Helmet Law, our club recommends all students and volunteers
to wear helmets. Many of our members already wear helmets and our
club have extra helmets for our members to use. Do not forget to wear a
helmet and goggles on slopes.
We talked about it for a long
time but did not practice much –
recording lesson memo for the future
trips. This year we will bring a form
for instructors to put notes. The form
will be simple and easy to fill in but
useful for students’ progress.
Prepare your mind and body,
and let’s have fun in the snow. Again,
thank you Helen and Chuck for offering their place for the clinic, and providing lunch, treats and drinks. !
he holiday
season has
come and
gone and I hope
you all had a joyful holiday. One
of the best gifts I
got this holiday is
a pair of brand
new hearing aids.
Now people have started calling me
the bionic man, Dededede!! Dedede!! I
thought I had a good stereo system in
my car which I realized is not the case.
The L.A. Council Snow Gala
was a great success. It was at the
Castaway Restaurant in Burbank.
They provided a fabulous buffet. I
had a wonderful time interacting with
others. Different clubs and organizations were present and we had a great
turnout. I got selected to represent
The Unrecables to drink a shot of
whiskey off of a ski, which is a tradition of the Wailers Ski Club to get participants drunk. You can’t tell that I
am drunk because I wobble during
walking anyway, LOL!! When I took
that shot, I thought my chest hair was
going to fall off. LOL!! I sure enjoyed
the opportunity being there.
Congratulations to our Man
and Woman of Year, John Melville
and Sigrid Noack! We had a good
crowd, including Fran Weber-Melville, Kathy Paisley, Jonna Wilkens,
Helen & Chuck De Berard, Michelle
McCarthy, Glenda Phillips, and me.
On a different note, for some
reason we did not get enough snow in
December. Bummer! But hopefully
we will have a good and wintery snow
fall in January and there will be lots of
lifts open so we can hit the slopes.
According to my sources, only about
55% of the lifts were open in December. I can’t wait until January 20-22 to
hit the slopes and have FUN! Whoever doesn’t come out is a rotten egg. !

Our instructor trip
was

this season. It was very successful
with many instructors in attendance.
Thank you everybody who came up!
We learned alot!
Please visit our web site for
this season’s trip dates and information about our trips, lodging, etc.
Scholarships are available! Mammoth
is open and ready for business. I am
looking forward to a snow packed season and many fun trips.
A few tips to make a trip easier for you and me. Send me your info
at least 2 weeks prior to a trip. Please
include all info from the Trip
Reservation Form. All forms can be
found on our web site.
See you all soon. !

2011 SILENT AUCTION -- A WONDERFUL SUCCESS
SIGRID NOACK
A
great big
THANK
YOU to all
of our friends who
supported us for
this year's very
successful Silent
Auction. LAC was
gracious enough
to invite us to hold our Auction again
at the annual LAC Snow Gala, which
this year was a Champagne Brunch
held at the beautiful Castaways
Restaurant overlooking Burbank. The
location was fabulous, the weather
cooperated, the food was delicious and
plentiful, as was the champagne, and
the whole event was well organized
and great fun. Thank you Anne
Kramer for doing such a wonderful
job putting together this festive event.
The highlight of the Snow
Gala is always the selection of the LAC
Man & Woman of the Year. The
Unrecables were represented by John
Melville and Sigrid Noack. As the
points were tallied and the re s u l t s
w e re announced, our own Sigrid
Noack was honored as LAC Woman of
the Year and Aaron Algazy of Century
City Ski Club as LAC Man of the Year.
Both will be representing LAC at the
June 2012 FWSA Convention in
Ogden, Utah, competing for FWSA
Man & Woman of the Year!
For The Unrecables, the other
most important part of the Snow Gala
is the Silent Auction, headed up by
chairperson Sigrid Noack. Of course
there can be no auction without donations. Thank you Mika Ito for helping
me with phone calls & running around
to pick up donations. Many establishments have been supportive and very
generous for several years, they have
become very dear friends. A huge
THANK YOU to all the donors and to
our LAC friends who support us by
bidding on the items.
T H E U NRECABLES N E W S
This year we had 25 donated
items with a value of $3,955 Most of
the Gala attendees participated in the
bidding process, which continued
throughout the afternoon. We had
many really great items: A beautiful
flower arrangement by Nadia, baby &
elder care by Nadia and Wally
Cardona, a 6-pack of fine wine from
Jane Wy c k o ff, delicious re s t a u r a n t
meals at The Warehouse, Islands, 12
Washington, C & O Trattoria, Pizza
Antica, Baja Cantina, Jamaica Bay Inn,
& the Cheesecake Factory, avocados to
be picked next June from the
Nickerson Avocado Grove in Fallbrook, 6-months of desserts by Chef
Rhonda, a pair of shape-ups fro m
Skechers, a jewelery certificate from
Universal Jeweler, a sheepskin ru g
from Mary Williamson, a sailing/harbor cruise with John Melville & Fran
Weber, a water-skiing day with Jeff
Simms, introductory lessons at Virtual
Snow, gift certificates from Ralphs, an
overnight at Courtyard by Marriott, a
weekend with brunch for 2 at the
Marina del Rey Hotel and a beautiful
Sterling Silver Charm Bracelet with 3
snow sport charms from Tiffany & Co.
A phenomenal assortment for ski club
members to bid on. We also received
donations from Dee Everts, Gloria
Slate, and Doug Nickerson.
We are very proud and hugely
thankful to be associated with so many
wonderful friends who support us.
Many have donated to our Silent
Auction for several years, and we really appreciate their support. A great big
thank you also to all the ski club members who bid on our donations, and
who ended up purchasing the wonderful donations. They will certainly
enjoy using their winnings and getting
to know the people and establishments
who are so supportive of our organization.

SUPER SKIING & HOSPITALITY AT ASPEN/SNOWMASS
GORDON CARDONA
A
s you may know, last June at
the FWSA Convention in
Industry Hills, I was honored
to be named 2011 FWSA Safety Person
of the Year. I would like to thank
Richard Lubin, DC and the FWSA
selection committee for their hard
work and commitment to FWSA. The
prize was a week-long ski trip for two
to Aspen/Snowmass!
My Mom and I went in
December and joined the San Diego
and Northwest Councils for a few of
their gatherings that week.
The
Welcome Party was held at the beautiful Gant Condominium complex in
Aspen. About 60 skiers came from
Southern
California
and
the
Northwest for a week of skiing and
partying. Thank you to Steve and
Linda Coxen, Mike Sanford, and
many others for inviting us to their
parties that week.
Our lodging for the week was
at The Crestwood in Snowmass. Our
beautiful condominium was right on
the slopes! Magnificent view of the
slopes and the lifts. We found the hospitality second to none. Superb service! Also, all the ski shuttles and local
buses were completely accessible. In
the morning, we jumped on the shuttle
WINTER ISSUE
bus from The Crestwood to go to
Snowmass Mall where the Challenge
Aspen offices were located. They had
just moved into their new location a
few weeks prior to our arrival. Very
convenient location to the slopes. The
staff was very nice and my instructor
for the week, Bob Lemley, was an
expert skier. We skied on some long
runs in Snowmass, Aspen, and Buttermilk. Gorgeous views! However,
since it was early season there were a
few bare spots and they were praying
for snow.
On our final day, we were
honored to ski a few runs with Mary
Manning, the Senior Sales Manager at
Aspen/Snowmass. She invited us for
the FWSA Ski Week to Aspen/Snowmass in 2013. We hope you will join
us!
I would like to thank M a r y
Manning and company for continuing
to sponsor the FWSA Safety Person of
the Year award. It is one of the most
prestigious awards in the FWSA and it
was a fabulous trip. I highly suggest
to enter your submission for this
award this Spring.

DECEMBER -- FULL OF FUN & LEARNING
SOO LEE
W
e are expecting La Nina
dumps but it did not happened yet. Mammoth is
making snow night and day, opening
one slopes after another but it was not
as fast as when nature took care of it.
Our month-delayed instru ctors’ trip mainly focused on checking
equipment and reviewing skills for
instructors. Hannah Nishimoto, our
Equipment Manager, Glenn Green,
and Dee Armstrong checked inventory at the freezing storage shed, and put
parts on bi-skis. There are some parts
to order and will be installed by our
January trip. Then our 5 bi-skis (4
Mountain Mans and a Bi-Unique) and
2 mono-skis will be ready.
We also decided to remove
some old inventory. Curre n t l y, a
Shadow mono-ski, 4 pairs of overshaped Mountain Man skis (only 2
pairs have bindings mounted), 2 old
model Mountain Man's handle bars,
some narrow tip connectors are available for any charity or adaptive ski
schools in need (photos available).
Thank you Sigrid Noack for offering
storage.
J. Davis led the practice for
instructors. Hannah, Dee, Glen, Soo,
Sigrid and her long-time friend Gale
Jaffe as a new instructor candidate
were the gang. Jan Grant also joined
us on Sunday morning.
Going
through all the situations at our trips
was very helpful including demo of
f o rgetting pin out before loading.
Tethering practices was also very help-
ful for reminding snow flaw muscles
and improving skills. Thanks Sigrid
for volunteering sitting in bi-ski.
Stand-up tethering was also gre a t
practice. Thank you J. for taking the
lessons with short notice. Thank you
Hannah for preparing equipment and
showing usage of them. Thank you
Dee for donating a new kind of tip
connecter, Monkey toes. Unfortunately, it hung on Sigrid’s jacket at one
moment and next moment, it was
gone. It slipped through our search
team.
There are many changes in
Mammoth. Most of all, they set gates
at lift lines and using card re-loadable
passes. Trip participants should give
their full name, date of birth, zip code,
and phone numbers along with trip
sign-in. The gates read passes and
open arms automatically. The mountain guides usually put their passes
between their shoulders and knees,
and away from other credit cards or
electronic devices. Bi-skiers can put
their passes at shoulder or chest pockets. However, a mono-skier ’s foot
would block the gate arms at chair 11,
so it will be better for mono-skiers to
secure their pass at shin level.
I hope those instructors who
did not attend this trip to have a
chance to shape up their teaching muscles and join us on our upcoming trips.
Tons of snow too.
Happy New Year! !

O

eleven Unrecables accepted
The Ski Channel’s E-vite to the

movie of extreme sports called
“Winter”. In attendance, among a
packed Westwood theater, were
Randy Benson, Gordon & Wally
Cardona, Helen & Chuck De Berard,
Stella Levin, Hannah Nishimoto,
Kelly Wong, and Richard Wu. We
were all blown away by the various
segments of action & dialogue.
Prior to the screening eight of
the seventeen headliner cast (a who’s
who modern day mountain sport athletes) were called onstage to be formerly introduced.
According to Nick Ernst, from
the Ski Channel, “highlights of the
movies' segments included Disabled
Sports USA Executive Director, Kirk
Bauer, JD., as he leads a group of
wounded warriors on a climb to the
summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Also featured is skier/base jumper, Karina
Hollekim, who nearly lost her life and
her legs in a sky diving accident. Her
amazing road to recovery is documented in this film.”
If anyone is interested in
viewing the trailer or screening, please

A great new ski season is upon us.
Mediocre or stellar, your choice. OK
let’s ride.
Physically. By this we mean aerobically, strength, and flexibility. All
three are important. Is everything
working fine? Acknowledge your
defects, solve them if you can, brace
them if you can’t.
Mentally. Interested, very interested, or psyched? Make goals for the
season. Visualize greatness.
Equipment. Is your stuff rusty, outdated, recently modern, or new and
spiffy? So you like this sport? Go
spend money on what you love.
Get some new gear. It’s better.
Spring for a season pass.
Vehicle. Get it ready. I hear it might
snow.
Safety, fun, and accomplishment.
It’s all about preparation and awareness. Create a great one. !
