The Community Foundation began when those seven individuals passed a hat to collect a couple hundred dollars and some change. Now, more than 2,200 funds have joined our family of giving. By the end of 2007, our donors had given more than $1.25 billion to community causes in just three decades. If you want to give back to the place you call home, we encourage you to give us a call. We can help you do everything from organizing and automating your charitable giving to creating a giving plan that will last for generations to come. We invite you to read through our annual report, which will give you a glimpse of the 30 years we have been serving people—just like you— who want to make a difference. 99 APPENDIX 3 Board of Directors Greater Kansas City Community Foundation Chair Mr. Thomas M. We always ask, “What is important to you? What would you like to see improved in your community?” In 2007, our donors answered those questions loud and clear. They suggested more than $195 million in grants to the community—that’s $3.75 million each week! Grants were given to more than 3,600 different nonprofits ranging from arts organizations to colleges and universities, churches, synagogues and many other charitable organizations in Kansas City and beyond. Individual grants ranged from $25 to multi-million dollar investments. The Foundation also welcomed 189 new donors to our family of giving, the largest number of individuals, families and corporations to open funds in a single year. We are excited to see so many new donors actively giving back to the community and we will continue to involve even more people—of all races and ages and our entire metropolitan area, north, south, east and west—in the joy of making a difference. 2 0 0 7 G reater K ansas C ity C ommunity F oundation AT A GL A NCE Assets.. .................................................. $1,118,860,724 Affiliated Trust Assets............................. $64,863,296 Total.. ...................................................$1,183,724,020 Contributions......................................... $189,014,176 Total Grant Expenditures.......................$196,001,068 Operating Expenses....................................$6,498,585 10 grants by geographical region type of recipient organization receiving grants 15% Public & Social Benefit $27,333,971 6% Missouri 5% Religion $11,406,944 $9,322,526 5% Community Improvement $8,994,276 5% Kansas 3% Civil Rights $10,029,682 $5,945,692 2% Health & Science $4,180,539 5% Other Services $8,407,934 23% Education $42,418,922 19% United States $33,346,069 70% Kansas City Metropolitan Area $127,647,829 total grants $182,430,524 12 Kansas City Metropolitan Area includes Clay, Jackson, Johnson, Platte and Wyandotte counties. Sometimes donors ask the Community Foundation for advice about smart charitable investments—investments that can leverage the greatest good for the future of our region. The Community Foundation engages in community leadership work for precisely that reason. The Community Foundation’s leadership work is based on the priorities articulated in the 2001 “Citistates Report” and the “Time to Get It Right” reports issued in 2005 and 2007. One of those priorities is strengthening the region’s urban education pipeline to prepare all of our children for success. If this is something that also is important to you, we certainly invite you to join us in this effort. In the 30 years since the Community Foundation was established, our donors have given more than $1.25 billion in grants to the nonprofit community. To celebrate our 30th birthday, we are sharing 30 stories about people who have carved out a place in their lives and hearts for charitable giving. We are grateful to all of our donors for making a difference in the community in their own unique ways. Thank you for making Kansas City a better place. 17 f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: Nationally, an estimated $4.1 billion was granted by community foundations in 2007. i n k a n s a s c i t y: Among the 650 community foundations nationwide, your community foundation ranked 3rd for dollars given to the community in 2007. 1978 Seven Founders with a vision Greater Kansas City Community Foundation Fulfilling Dreams through Charitable Giving O ur founders believed that philanthropy is the opportunity and responsibility of everyone, not just a few. Having begun in 1978 with just seven people and a couple hundred dollars, the Foundation has grown to more than $1 billion in assets, spread among more than 2,200 funds dedicated to the causes that are important to the individuals, families and businesses who established them. Now one of the 10 largest community foundations in the country, and with over $1.25 billion in grants distributed since inception, the Community Foundation works side by side with Kansas City’s donors to fulfill community dreams through the power of giving. “Thirty years of charitable giving is truly a milestone to celebrate,” said Tom Bloch, chair of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation’s board of directors. “We are grateful to our donors for their deep commitment to improving our region’s quality of life. It’s what the Community Foundation is all about: more giving, smarter investments, a better Kansas City.” Greater Kansas City Community Foundation Founders, Front Row (L to R): Morton Sosland, Charles Kimball; Back Row: Edward A. Smith Philanthropic Fund A legacy of Listening and Building Together “D o justice; love mercy; and walk humbly with your God,” Beth Smith learned as a child. Both parents and grandparents (Lithuanian immigrants) were observant adherents to Judaism. “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon but a community spoon in my mouth,” Beth mused. Ed Smith, one of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation’s seven founders, and his wife, Beth, were for many years one of Kansas City’s dynamic duos. Beth was influenced by the bright and charismatic Marjorie Powell Allen, also a founder of the Community Foundation. They worked together to establish the Central Exchange, an interracial and intergenerational venue where women “could pick up the check.” And in 1979, Ed and Beth established the Edward A. and Beth K. Smith Philanthropic Fund. Ed has since passed on but Beth continues to support the nonprofit sector. She considers her forte to be “drawing strength and wisdom from others; listening and building together.” And that is the spirit of the Women’s Employment Network Fund—also housed at the Community Foundation—one of the many legacies Beth has given to Kansas City. Nelson Fund Strengthening our Community, Investing in its Future P hilanthropy was a new adventure to Helen Nelson in 1980, but she was committed to giving back to her community. Helen established a donor advised fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to organize her philanthropy—and she loved every minute of it. For nearly two decades Helen appreciated the expertise and research the Community Foundation provided about issues affecting Kansas City. She also enjoyed receiving updates on the impact of her grants. Helen was passionate about supporting downtown revitalization, education, accessible arts and medical research. At her death, Helen bestowed a living legacy for Kansas City’s future generations. Her generosity will live on through the Helen H. Nelson Fund, dedicated to fulfilling Helen’s charitable dreams for Kansas City’s future. Bloch Philanthropic Fund A CEO Who Left His Family’s Company to Follow His Heart T om Bloch was CEO of H&R Block, the world’s largest tax-preparation firm, and the son of the company’s founder. He was making $1 million a year, but something was missing. After much soul-searching, Tom resigned to become an inner-city math school teacher in Kansas City. Then one night, Tom was surfing the Internet and became worried about the very low youth volunteer participation rate—a concern he shared with his wife, Mary. They transformed their worry into an effort to fuel student volunteerism. Together they founded the Youth Service Alliance of Greater Kansas City. This is just one of the many charitable passions Tom and Mary have supported through the Thomas M. and Mary S. Bloch Philanthropic Fund, established in 1981 at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. They enjoy helping all of their favorite charities— including universities, the arts, and their synagogue—in an organized and easy-to-manage way. Mary and Tom Bloch 25 The market value of the 120 largest university f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: endowments in America rose 14.5% between 2005 and 2006. i n k a n s a s c i t y: The University of Kansas boasts the nation’s 57th largest endowment. 1982 Don & Adele Hall Donald J. and Adele C. Hall Donor Advisory Fund Inspiring Gifts, Large and Small C harmingly down to earth, Don and Adele Hall are known for their stellar reputation, which is synonymous with philanthropy. Arts organizations, hospitals, universities and countless nonprofits have benefited from their time and championship. In 1982, the couple established the Donald J. and Adele C. Hall Donor Advisory Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, which is also the beneficiary of Don’s time and talent as a founder and Adele’s service as board chair years later. Don and Adele credit their families for passing on philanthropic values. Together they share a giving philosophy: “One ounce of volunteer participation gives the management of a nonprofit the elbow grease and time to get the job done,” Don said. “Even getting just a little involved in an organization that does good is exciting.” It’s impossible to quantify the total impact of the couple’s philanthropy on Kansas City, including major commitments to the University of Kansas and Children’s Mercy Hospital. But the Halls themselves don’t focus on the grand scale of what has been accomplished. They look to the future. And so the list of projects blessed by Don and Adele continues to grow—one human investment at a time. One year later, the Hispanic Development Fund created a scholarship fund for students of Hispanic descent who are pursuing a college education. Since its inception, the fund has awarded more than 2,046 scholarships, totaling almost $1.6 million. “The Hispanic Scholarship Fund continues to be one of the few local scholarship programs in the country that consistently award more than 80 scholarships each year,” said Ramon Murguia, Hispanic Scholarship Fund Advisory Board Chair. “We are proud that our scholarship fund has contributed to the success of many, and we plan to continue investing in our community’s future by providing support for education.” This Page (L to R): Candace Colorado, Maria Mora, Ramon Murguia, Alicia Caudillo-Melgoza, Carlos Salazar, Beatriz Sanchez, Michael Gonzales; Facing Page: 2006 Hispanic Fiesta 29 90% of attorneys, accountants and financial advisors in America state f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: that they routinely raise the subject of charitable giving with high net worth clients. i n k a n s a s c i t y: More than 400 attorneys, accountants and financial advisors regularly refer clients to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. 1984 Don Chisholm The Don Chisholm Memorial Fund Leading the Way to a Charitable Lifestyle D on Chisholm was a talented lawyer at the firm of Stinson, Mag & Fizzell, now Stinson Morrison Hecker. His legacy to Kansas City reaches beyond his chosen profession, and his vision will be appreciated for generations to come. A strong supporter of charitable giving and a mentee of the legendary Arthur Mag, Don introduced his clients to the benefits of contributing their estates to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to support their favorite charitable causes. One of Don’s many claims to fame was drafting documents to establish the Jacob L. and Ella C. Loose Foundation, Kansas City’s first milliondollar charity. Don served on that foundation’s board for 41 years. When the idea for a community foundation was proposed, Don was there to help it along as a founding director, and in 1984 played a key role in establishing many of the funds added during that critical year. During his lifetime, Don helped open new doors to charitable giving. Today, many attorneys, accountants and financial advisors follow his lead, and for several years, the Don Chisholm Memorial Fund recognized special professionals in their commitment to helping clients give back. This Page: Don Chisholm; Facing Page: Chisholm and Jim Sunderland at the Don Chisholm Awards Banquet 30 Within the next 50 years, an estimated $41 trillion in f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: wealth will be transferred from one generation to the next. i n k a n s a s c i t y: In 2007, Greater Kansas City Community Foundation donors granted nearly $200 million to charitable causes from more than 2,000 funds. 1985 Karen & Mike Herman Herman Family Foundation Fund Passing on Charitable Values to the Next Generation M ike and Karen Herman taught their children at a young age about the importance of helping others. Their approach was to lead by example, much like Mike’s mentor at Marion Labs, Ewing Kauffman. Mike and Karen began talking with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in 1985 about establishing the Herman Family Foundation Fund. “I remember one day my corporate salary was published in the paper,” Mike said. “Our 12-year-old came home and said, ‘Dad! Are we millionaires?!’ She wasn’t aware of any wealth because we give our money to the community. We want to create our heaven on earth.” Over the years, in addition to giving financially, the Hermans have given their time and talent. They have been driving forces behind numerous civic organizations including Karen’s presidency at the Women’s Foundation and Mike’s presidency at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The Herman children enjoy volunteering and approach each donation as an investment. “Our children embrace that some of their inheritance will go to charity,” Karen said. “And we’re proud to see them give to the causes they care about.” Karen and Mike Herman 33 f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: Nationally, the suburban high school graduation rate is 75% and the urban graduation rate is 58%. i n k a n s a s c i t y: Kansas City’s suburban high school graduation rate is 82% and its urban graduation rate is 68%. 1986 Kansas City Securities Association Kansas City Securities Association Education Endowment Fund Scholarships for Urban Youth T he Kansas City Securities Association, an organization of more than 40 investment professionals in the Kansas City area, established the KCSA Education Endowment Fund in 1986 to provide financial support for tuition, special projects, needs or emergency assistance to students. KCSA has awarded more than 200 college scholarships totaling an estimated $1.3 million to members of Kansas City’s Marching Cobras, student athletes selected by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, student athletes at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. Currently there are 41 students attending college with the help of KCSA Education Endowment Fund scholarships. In addition to the scholarships, KCSA recently established the KCSA Education Endowment Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. It is a tradition that picked up momentum more than two decades ago in 1987 and continues with the help of Highwoods Properties. “The Plaza had seven filling stations and Miller replaced them with fountains in 1985,” said Jeannette Nichols, widow of Miller Nichols who founded the fund. “He didn’t think too much about people putting coins into the fountains, but when they did he wanted to give the money to Children’s Mercy Hospital. He always had a great affinity for it.” “Miller Nichols hoped that these coins could provide seed money for an endowment for Children’s Mercy Hospital, and he approached the Community Foundation confident that his wishes would be carried out beyond his lifetime,” said George Bittner, executive vice president of the Community Foundation. “The Plaza Fountain Fund will always memorialize the wishes of its founder.” 37 f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: In 2006, 47 million children in America did not have health or dental insurance. i n k a n s a s c i t y: In 2004, in Kansas City alone, more than 15,000 children were living without health or dental insurance. 1988 Irven & NeVada Linscomb Irven E. and NeVada P. Linscomb Foundation Fund Helping Needy Children in the Northland I n the mid-1930s, NeVada Linscomb, born to a German immigrant family, met Irven Linscomb. Irven, himself born into poverty in Texas, was working for the Chase Bag Company in Kansas City’s River Market. Soon Irven and NeVada started their own company, building a successful business that thrived for many years. It was in 1957 when Irven met Bill Zimmer and joined Zimmer Companies. “Irven was a man of integrity who took only calculated risks and yet was great fun to be with,” Bill said. After Irven died, NeVada opened the Irven E. and NeVada P. Linscomb Foundation Fund in 1988 at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. A year later, Bill persuaded NeVada to set up a charitable trust to ensure that her charitable passions could be realized. NeVada passed away eight years later, and through the Community Foundation the couple’s legacy lives on. The Irven E. and NeVada P. Linscomb Foundation Fund supports services for children in the Northland, including “Miles of Smiles,” a mobile dental program. Loose Foundation Fund A Century of Serving Poor and Needy Children I n the early years of the 20th century, Jacob Loose and his brother, Joseph, built the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company, marketed as Sunshine Biscuits, into one of the nation’s largest producers of cookies and crackers. Following the deaths of their two infant children, Jacob and his wife, Ella, became passionate about supporting poor and needy children and families in Kansas City. When Jacob passed away in 1923, his estate established the Jacob Loose Million Dollar Charity Fund Association. It was Kansas City’s first $1 million foundation, and it was housed at the First National Bank. Then, the Jacob L. and Ella C. Loose Foundation Fund was established in 1989 at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to carry out the work of the charitable trust. At the turn of the century, African-American patients, doctors and nurses were restricted to providing and receiving medical treatment at Kansas City’s General Hospital #2, a separate facility from General Hospital #1, which served only Caucasians. Years later, General Hospital #2 merged with General Hospital #1 to become Truman Medical Center. Until that merger, General Hospital #2’s School of Nursing operated for 46 years and graduated 715 students. A group of nurses who attended the School of Nursing established the General Hospital #2 Perpetual Trust Fund in 1990 at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. They share a mutual passion for providing scholarships to African-American students in Greater Kansas City who are attending accredited nursing programs. Claudia Bryan 42 Between 2007 and 2016, nonprofits f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: will need 640,000 senior managers, over 2.4 times the number employed in 2006. i n k a n s a s c i t y: The nonprofit sector comprises 8.1% of Kansas City’s total economy and employs more than 65,000 people. 1991 David Hughes, Jr. Charlotte Street Foundation Fund A Grassroots Approach to Art and Giving I n 1991, early in his business career, David Hughes, Jr. served on the philanthropic decision-making team at American Century Companies. He primarily focused on giving in the arts community. Little did he know that five years later he would leave his corporate job and make charitable giving his life’s work. David had a vision for turning Kansas City into a magnet for artists. He wanted to create an environment where civic, business and philanthropic leaders, as well as a growing portion of the general public, valued and supported artists and creative individuals. After much consideration, he left the for-profit sector and established the Charlotte Street Foundation Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. David Hughes, Jr., Executive Director of the Charlotte Street Foundation; and Kate Hackman, Associate Director An installation by Pat Alexander and Michael Coverse titled “Separated at Birth” at Urban Culture Project Space “Many people are generous with large arts organizations and that’s important. However, support for the entire arts ecosystem is critical. And it’s the artists who—collectively—have a huge impact on the art, culture and economy of today,” David said. “Very few people pay attention to human capital, and artists struggle to simply exist. Charlotte Street wants artists to thrive in Kansas City, and for our region to be known as a hot-bed of creativity.” 45 The number of students enrolling as music majors at f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: universities across the country has increased 46% since 1993. i n k a n s a s c i t y: The music community in Kansas City has received almost $200,000 from the Martha Lee Tranby Music Enrichment Fund designated for scholarships and local nonprofits. 1992 martha Lee Tranby Martha Lee Tranby Music Enrichment Fund Piano Teacher’s Bequest Makes the Music Last Forever M artha Lee Tranby was a high school piano teacher, organ player for her church, and choir conductor for two other churches. For more than 45 years, hundreds of kids came to her home for piano lessons. Martha lived modestly and didn’t think of herself as a philanthropist. Nevertheless, she took the advice of her attorney and established the Martha Lee Tranby Music Enrichment Fund as a legacy to her parents. “She wanted to do something that would permanently benefit the music community in Kansas City,” said her attorney, Myron Sildon. Myron introduced Martha to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in 1992. “She established a modest fund, saw to it that it was operating as she desired, and was able to suggest grants and enjoy her modest wealth during her lifetime,” Myron said. Martha passed away in 2004, and the Community Foundation sees to it that her fund helps others enrich the community with music precisely as Martha envisioned. Martha Lee Tranby 46 f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: Charitable contributions by corporations accounted for 5.1% of giving nationwide in 2007. i n k a n s a s c i t y: In comparison, 13% of charitable giving in Kansas City comes from corporate foundations, according to the most recent survey, conducted in 2005. 1993 Kansas City Southern Kansas City Southern Charitable Fund A rich history of giving back to the region A rthur E. Stilwell founded Kansas City Southern in 1887 with a bold vision to provide a direct north-south rail route to the Gulf of Mexico, moving grain, coal, lumber and other minerals across a growing nation. Considered to be eccentric during a time when other railroads adopted an east-west route, Stilwell pushed forward with his dream of the north-south rail line, undaunted by those who labeled his aspirations unrealistic. Stilwell’s strategy—and Kansas City Southern—was an unqualified success. For more than a century, the leaders and hard-working railroaders at Kansas City Southern have embraced Stilwell’s tenacious ingenuity, making Kansas City Southern what it is today. A tribute to the leadership of Dr. King, the fund has been a ray of hope for many students seeking a college education. “Students are more likely to seek out additional scholarships when they’ve received a helping hand,” said LaVert. The fund honors Dr. King not only in name but also in spirit. In fact, each prospective scholarship recipient must demonstrate how he or she has applied Dr. King’s teachings to overcome a specific adversity through the power of education. “Not all of our scholarship recipients are perfect academic performers,” said LaVert. “We reward students for being role models and getting grades that are above average. That’s what Dr. King would expect from youth who work to become future leaders despite their everyday struggles.” LaVert Murray 50 There are nearly 500,000 Holocaust survivors around the world. Years later, sorting through his parents’ belongings, Pete stumbled across dozens of beautifully composed letters, handwritten in German, from his father to his mother during the time they were apart. Pete hired an expert to translate the letters. With each translation, Pete recognized that he had an historical treasure on his hands. Each letter offered a snapshot into daily life during a pivotal time in history, all wrapped up in a love story. Pete established the Levi Family Foundation for the Study of Holocaust Archives Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. Now others can experience history through the heartwarming correspondence between his parents all those years ago. And to think that in 1995 the letters were sitting in a closet in Kurt’s Plaza apartment in an old tattered box—the same box they had been in since 1938! That’s exactly why the Diocese of Kansas City—St. Joseph established the Central City School Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. The fund is dedicated to promoting values-based, quality education to children in the urban core. By 1996, the fund was deeply engaged in providing financial support to the Central City Schools. The Diocese also established a partner fund, the Central City Schools Hearst Scholarship Fund, to provide needs-based tuition assistance. “During my first year as executive director, reviewing the scholarship applications was a new and shocking experience with both painful and joyful lessons,” said Dan Ryan, executive director of the Central City School Fund. “The painful part was seeing children’s names attached to statistical poverty. The joy came from the bright world of opportunity and hope that the Central City School Fund makes possible for these kids.” 54 In 2003, Americans donated f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: $5.9 billion of real estate to charitable organizations across the country. i n k a n s a s c i t y: Ewing Marion Kauffman’s gift of the Kansas City Royals major league baseball team was the first charitable contribution of its kind in history. 1997 Ewing Marion Kauffman Ewing M. Kauffman Fund for Greater Kansas City Double Play: Charitable Move Keeps Royals in Kansas City E wing Marion Kauffman loved baseball. He also was deeply committed to giving back. A carefully crafted estate plan reflected both of these passions. Ewing’s gift of the Kansas City Royals baseball team created a regional benefit so compelling that it marked the first time in history that the Internal Revenue Service had approved a charitable deduction for the gift of a major league sports team. The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, in turn, helped 32 other donors establish funds to ensure the team’s stability prior to its sale. Reflecting his passion to help others, Ewing established the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in the late 1960s to advance education and entrepreneurship. In addition, the Ewing M. Kauffman Fund for Greater Kansas City and the Royals Fund were established at the Community Foundation. The Royals Fund received its last contribution in relation to the Royals succession plan in 1997. Among Ewing’s many legacies was his inspiration to other donors to think creatively about giving assets other than cash and marketable securities to their favorite charitable organizations. Whether the charitable gift is real estate, closely-held stock, or a baseball team, visionary donors and “alternative assets” are a winning combination for the community. Gary grew up on a family farm in northern Missouri and met Ann, from Hannibal, in college. Ann and Gary raised four children and pursued an active life of community involvement during their 30 years of marriage. Gary founded Bank Midwest in the early 1970s and oversaw its impressive growth until he was tragically killed in a car accident two decades later. Ann continued Gary’s legacy as chair and owner of Dickinson Financial Corporation, headquartered in Kansas City. In 1998, Ann and her family established the Gary Dickinson Family Charitable Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation to fulfill the family’s wide range of charitable priorities. The Dickinsons are especially supportive of Kansas City’s downtown revitalization, a tribute to Gary’s passion for local and regional economic development. The Dickinson Family 58 Expenditures for academic research f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: in the United States doubled from $19.4 billion in 1993 to $39.4 billion in 2003. i n k a n s a s c i t y: The estimated economic impact of the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle concept is $1.4 billion. 1999 Dick & Sue Bond Dick and Sue Bond Family Foundation Fund Making Kansas City Better for the Next Generation D ick and Sue Bond want to leave a legacy to future generations. But they want that legacy to be more than just money. They want to give the gift of giving. To make their charitable dream a reality, the former president of the Kansas Senate and his wife turned to the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. “We started by setting up the Dick and Sue Bond Family Foundation Fund in 1999,” Dick said. “And then we set up a fund for our grandchildren. This will be more valuable to them than a direct inheritance.” The Bonds’ idea inspired the Community Foundation to offer the Next Generation Fund to all of its donors. “Children and grandchildren can learn philanthropic values at any age,” said Dick. The couple, long-time supporters of Johnson County, is currently rallying the community around another type of legacy, the Johnson County Education and Research Triangle, a concept designed to enhance our community’s competitiveness through strategic investment in educational excellence. Hoping to give the kids perspective on the world outside of their comfortable upbringing, they set up the Katie and Andrew Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in 2000. “The idea was to put structure around our parenting on financial issues and the kids’ social education,” Darcy said. Each year Katie and Andrew review the fund’s returns and get involved by going on site visits to their favorite charities. Darcy says making a financial donation is only part of the fund’s benefit. “It’s not just about the money. The fund has had a ripple effect in getting the kids more involved in volunteer efforts. They’re discovering which causes mean the most to them, like their support of Ronald McDonald House. This philanthropic self discovery is important for their future and the future of our community.” Darcy Howe with her children, Andrew and Katie 62 f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: In 2003, 68% of our country’s hospitals had a 24-hour specialist in the pediatric intensive care unit. i n k a n s a s c i t y: Children’s Mercy Hospital is the only children’s hospital in the region with a board-certified intensive care specialist on site 24 hours a day. 2001 Laura McKnight & Clay Barker Laura McKnight and Clay Barker Fund Every Gift Makes a Difference L aura McKnight leads a charitable lifestyle around the clock. By day she’s the president and CEO of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, and by night she and her husband, Clay Barker, deliberately choose to make charitable giving part of their lives. Together Laura and Clay enjoy a busy household with five daughters ages 2–19. One day, two-year-old Lindy, admitted to Children’s Mercy Hospital for an outpatient procedure, suffered severe complications. “Philanthropy has created a margin of excellence at Children’s Mercy Hospital that enables it to hire the best and the brightest,” Laura said. “Unquestionably, the technical proficiency of the staff at Children’s Mercy is why Lindy is here today.” Laura and Clay support Children’s Mercy and all of the organizations they are passionate about through the very modest but mighty Laura McKnight and Clay Barker Fund, established at the Community Foundation in 2001. They love Kansas City and they give back because they know that every gift—even a small gift—makes a difference. Claude is an energetic idealist with an idea-a-minute way of thinking. He’s also an advisor to the Mr. & Mrs. Isidor Wachstein & Their Son Julius & Thau Family Trust Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. “It’s not enough to give a donation and call it done,” Claude said. “People should engage with nonprofits and ask questions. Figure out if this really is the best use of their money.” In 2002, the Community Foundation brought the idea to life in Kansas City and called it DonorEdge. DonorEdge helps donors determine the difference they want to make with their charitable dollars. It does this by encouraging nonprofits to share information and results using an online platform. “My view is long-term,” Claude said. “I want people to think differently about charitable giving. This will pay dividends for centuries.” Claude and Tina Thau 66 In 2007, there were more than 11 million f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: cancer survivors in the United States, up from 3 million in 1971. i n k a n s a s c i t y: An estimated 100,000 cases of invasive cancer were expected to be diagnosed in Kansas between 1997 and 2004. 2003 Barbara Unell Back in the Swing Fund Joyful, Healthy and Proactive Living After Breast Cancer B efore Back in the Swing, nowhere in Kansas City was the transition from cancer patient to cancer survivor addressed in the form of a survivorship care plan. All that has changed, thanks to the vision and passion of Barbara Unell. Fighting breast cancer required Barbara to dedicate all of her mental and physical energy to getting her life back. But when she completed her treatment, she was surprised to learn that there were no resources to help her get back into the swing of life. Barbara was inspired when she read “The News Was Bad; I Went to Bendel’s,” an article written by breast cancer survivor Ellen Tien, who observed that shopping offered hope that life moves forward. Retail therapy became the cornerstone of Kansas City’s annual experiential fundraiser, Back in the Swing. Barbara established the Back in the Swing Fund in 2003, and retail therapy just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Last year alone, Back in the Swing raised over $600,000, much of it $25 at a time. That’s the name of a group of professionals who are dedicated to encouraging young people in Kansas City to join together and make a difference in the community. The team is made up of individuals who pool their money to make an impact. The Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is the behindthe-scenes support system for the ImpactKC Fund, established in 2004. This allows the group to focus on learning about the needs of our region and putting its dollars where they really count. Each year ImpactKC reviews grant applications from nonprofit organizations and hosts meetings dedicated to expanding the membership’s community knowledge and access to volunteer opportunities. Setting aggressive annual goals to raise a significant amount of money for charitable causes enables ImpactKC to leverage the strength and power of a team, well beyond the sum of its individual parts, through fundraising, education and volunteering. Kreamer Community Fund to honor Jan when she retired in 2005. The fund’s three-year capacity building grant competition resulted in more than $600,000 in grants to local organizations. “Jan is an amazing leader,” said Laura McKnight, Jan’s successor at the Community Foundation. “Not a day goes by that I don’t thank my lucky stars for Jan’s mentorship and the many lessons she taught me. It is true that she built the Community Foundation from $12 million to over $1 billion,” said Laura, “but Jan’s greatest legacy is the culture of innovation, integrity, respect and passion for the mission that she instilled at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. Now that’s capacity building.” Jan Kreamer 73 f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: In 2006, donors in the United States gave $96.82 billion— or 32% of all donations—to religious organizations. i n k a n s a s c i t y: The more than 2,000 religious organizations in Kansas City receive 33% of our region’s charitable giving. 2006 dick & Bernadette Miller Bernadette and Richard Miller Charitable Fund Great Faith in Helping Youth through Education B ernadette and Dick Miller take great joy in seeing their children flourish in adulthood and become parents themselves. So why, with nine children and 29 grandchildren, do they give their money away to people they do not know? “We give back to the community because it’s an extension of our Catholic faith,” Dick said. “We try to assist the poor, disadvantaged, elderly and ill. That is important to us. We are also committed to education at all levels and to the arts.” The couple established the Bernadette and Dick Miller Charitable Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. The focus of their support for education is providing scholarships for individual students to attend Catholic high schools and colleges, and paying the tuition for entire classes of urban youth to attend Catholic schools. They also provide tickets at no charge for hundreds of high school and college students to attend the Lyric Opera and the Kansas City Symphony, which encompasses both of their interests in the performing arts and education. “We have a small foundation, but we do what we can,” Dick said. “It’s amazing to watch how even the smallest gift can change a person’s life. We receive far more in return than we give.” Dick also oversees the Catholic Family Foundation Fund, established at the Community Foundation in 2006. 74 This page: Bernadette and Dick Miller; Facing Page: The Miller Family f r o m c o a s t t o c o a s t: i n k a n s a s c i t y: An estimated 250,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. Others might fondly remember her mother, Marjorie Powell Allen, a civic leader and founder of the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. But what few people know is that Barbara was diagnosed with breast cancer just a few years ago. Barbara turned to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston because it offered top-notch treatment. She participated in a clinical trial that she believes saved her life. “I had the opportunity to travel for my treatment,” Barbara said. “But not everybody is so fortunate. We need to ensure all breast cancer patients in Kansas City have access to world-class health care and to cutting edge clinical trials because everyone in our region deserves to receive the highest standard of cancer care possible.” Barbara Allen Barbara already has quite a track record in the fight against breast cancer. From the “file and fight” Kansas income tax return check-off, to the Kansas breast cancer license plate program, to enabling legislation for a Johnson County research and education sales tax, Barbara’s leadership has real traction. In 2007, she established the Driven to Cure Foundation Fund at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, paving the way for a healthier region. 77 Fund Listing An absolutely critical principle in our work at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation is to always ask, “What is important to you?” We ask that question of every donor, every nonprofit organization and every board member—anyone with whom we interact. We want to know, “What is important to you? What do you know about the community? What are the things you would like to see improve in Kansas City to make it an even better place?” When a charitable fund is established at the Community Foundation, it is the donor who determines the purpose of the fund. As the donor’s partner in charitable giving, we ensure that the fund follows the donor’s intent. We are grateful to our donors for their passion and commitment to improving our region’s quality of life. This fund listing includes only funds that have given us permission to publish their names and were in existence in 2007. Funds are listed alphabetically.
