Dining Above The River
Enjoy the skyline of downtown Winnipeg from
a new vantage point this season – there isn’t a
seat in this half-moon shaped bistro that doesn’t
offer a lovely view. Perched in the centre of
the Esplanade Riel, the recently opened Chez
Sophie sur le Pont offers traditional French
cuisine including long-time favourites like
boeuf bourguignon, moules et frites and their
tartiflette casserole with Trappist cheese. The
restaurant and its small attached boutique will
remain open all winter long.

Pop Up Restaurant
Mandel Hitzer (Deer + Almond) and
Joe Kalturnyk (RAW: Gallery) have
taken the idea of pop-up to the next
level – by bringing local restaurants to
the Red and Assiniboine rivers. Each
day of the 21-day event, from breakfast
to dinner, was sold out. This year, the
duo will be turning it up a notch with
a new space with a dining hall and
lounge with more seating. The event
will also feature award winning chefs
from across North America along
with their star-studded line up of local
chefs. Ticket sales will be available
shortly and RAW: Gallery members
will receive two weeks advanced
notice on ticket sales.

Warming Huts
Stuck in the Middle
Since its start in 2010, the international
warming hut design contest at The
Forks has grown to attract architects
from around the globe - including
renowned architect Frank Gehry’s
firm, who designed a hut back in 2012.
This year’s competition winners will
once again craft their one-of-a-kind
warming huts on The Forks river
trail to warm the hands and hearts of
Winnipeggers during the city’s cold
winter season.

Photographer Bryan Scott of the blog
Winnipeg Love Hate and journalist
Bartley Kives have come together to
publish a new book exploring the
geography, design and reputation
of the city we sometimes all love to
hate. Winnipeg inspires intense and
contradictory emotions from residents,
visitors and people who have never
even ventured within wading distance
of the Manitoba capital. The city at
the centre of North America inspires
a profound sense of ambivalence,
stuck as it is between a colourful
and triumphant early history, a long
period of 20th-Century decline and
an uncertain if optimistic future. With
vicious honesty and intense affection,
Scott and Kives expose Winnipeg’s
beautiful and conflicted soul for the
rest of the world to admire and detest
and ultimately ignore.
Renovating a Classic
Even a classic Irish pub likes to freshen
up once and a while. This past August,
Shannon’s Irish Pub & Eatery went
through renovation that kept the
same great pub feel, but renewed
their aesthetics. The pub installed
new hickory hard wood flooring,
repurposed Church pews have been
put in as seating against the main floor
walls, and five new pieces of art from
4
Ireland have been installed. You can
still choose from over 20 beers on tap
to partner up with lunch and dinner
favourites such as their Guinness
Battered Halibut and Chips and the
essential Bangers and Mash.

Over $200,000
Raised
At the 3rd annual CEO Sleepout on
September 26, over 100 Winnipeg
CEOs, community leaders, and
members of the media helped
raised over $200,000 for Change for
the Better. These funds go toward
employment programs to help people
who are homeless get into housing
and transition into permanent
employment. Participants spent the
night outdoors at Portage and Main
to raise awareness as well as funds to
address issues of homelessness and
poverty in our city. “The CEO Sleepout
was an energizing experience and a
tremendous opportunity to make a
real difference in our community,”
said Marilyn McLaren, President &
CEO, Manitoba Public Insurance. “By
working together towards a common
goal, even the largest challenges can
be overcome.” Donations will continue
to be accepted for Change for the
Better at changeforthebetter.org.

balcony of a new highrise, there
are options for almost every
need and budget, whether you
want to buy or rent.
Think about it – no more
shovelling. No more yard
work. Because your back yard
is now the thriving hub of the
city’s business community by
day, and the centre of one of
Canada’s best arts scenes at
night. Leave your car in the

Let’s be frank: the inside of
your car isn’t that interesting.
So why do you spend so much
time there?
Think about it, you’re
battling traffic to get to the
office. You’re doing the same
thing to get home. You have
to drive to get to Jets games,
concerts, art openings, to check
out the city’s best restaurants
and to take part in any of
Winnipeg’s renowned festivals.
Maybe it’s time for a change.
Maybe it’s time to try living
somewhere where you can
leave your car parked, since
almost everything you need is
in walking distance.
Maybe it’s time to consider
downtown.
This summer, Winnipeg was the backdrop for the
upcoming movie Strings, starring Josh Duhamel, Lucas
Till of the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, and
Kherington Payne of So You Think You Can Dance
and Fame. We caught up with Kherington and Lucas
to find out about their time filming in the city:
Which would you pick - Winnipeg
summer or Winnipeg winter?
I wasn’t here for the winter, but I’ve heard things so I’ll take
the summer!
What was your favourite place to go for dinner
or a drink?
I didn’t hit Rudy’s until recently, but I really like it – I think
it’s my favourite – love the food and the atmosphere. And
Hermano’s!
What’s something you’ll miss?
The nice people!
KHERINGTON PAYNE
Tea, coffee or cocktails?
Cocktails! Gin & tonic is my go-to. For caffeine, I’ve grown
fond of Tim Horton’s! We don’t have that in LA.
Favourite place to go for a drink in the city?
We’ve been liking Fox & Fiddle, BOA, and Whiskey Dix –
those are my top 3!
What was your favourite purchase in the city?
A little black dress I got in the Exchange at a cute little
boutique! On the sale rack, one left, in my size! It was meant
to be.
What was the earliest you had to get up?
7AM call was the earliest – but then we moved to night
shoots. And at a certain point, late kind of becomes early!
We’d do a 14-hour shoot, so you’d only get a little sleep. So
that call might be 10AM, but you’d only get to bed at 3AM.
What’s something you’ll miss:
The people. The people are incredibly nice here, you don’t
run into people like that in LA! I’ll miss that and the vibe – I
got to know my way around even though I’ve only been here
for a little while.

Restauranteur Noel Bernier is fully aware of the lofty expectations as he reopens the city’s iconic revolving restaurant as
Prairie 360 after a closure of five years.
A NEW SPIN
ON A FAMILIAR VIEW
8
dtw | fall/winter 2013
“It’s almost a civic responsibility to do this right,” he acknowledges. So great care and thought went into the process of
transforming the restaurant. Renovations started only this summer, but Bernier started pursuing the space almost four
years ago. “There was a story about us in the newspaper the day we opened our first restaurant, Hermanos, and it also
mentioned the closing of the revolving restaurant. So it was really the day we opened Hermanos that we started to think
about it.”
To Bernier, Prairie 360 is about celebrating who we are and where we hail from. “Prairie 360 is about us. There’s a real
tendency in Winnipeg and in human nature to celebrate elsewhere. We wanted to build a restaurant that was a reflection of
Winnipeg and the people of this city and of this province. So we asked ourselves how we could communicate that.”
dtw | fall/winter 2013
9
revolving | mode
The task started with the menu.
Chef Alfonso Maury was asked to
take diners on a food journey that
reflected who Manitobans are. Maury’s
interpretation of that theme takes
diners back through local history
as they move through their meal.
Appetizers are riffs on traditional
cultural dishes that reflect the
multiculturalism of Manitoba today.
That means a Portuguese dish, an
East Indian dish, and a Filipino dish,
among others, make the menu.
Entrees are intended to evoke the era
of the hunter-farmer in the early 20th
and late 19th century. “This place
was at its heart a pioneer town,” says
Bernier. “So there’s a lot of wild game,
and dishes with a hearty rustic nature.”
That includes venison, stews and a
range of elk, beef, and Cornish game
hen from the grill. Bernier is looking
forward in particular to seeing people
try the Bison Prosciutto Perogies, done
in a style almost akin to a large ravioli.
Renovations are meant to convey that
sense of place as well, striving for a feel
that is elevated, but not pretentious.
That means no white linen tablecloths
or elaborate chandeliers (save one
left up for nostalgia in the lounge),
but instead solid wood furniture with
simple lines, and floors and walls in
blues and golds that reflect the prairie
sun, sky, fields and rivers. Bars and
walls are set with blocks of limestone
from the same quarry north of the
city that supplied the stone for the
building’s exterior. And little touches
of prairie are everywhere – from
waving grasses on the glass of the light
fixtures to the names of Manitoba
towns like Dauphin and Steinbach
etched on dividers.
The second, smaller upper revolving
level has been similarly refreshed,
but plans are much different for it.
The space will not be reopened as a
regular dining area, but rather kept
as an intimate event space available
for private bookings. The space also
has a future as part of some unique
dining experiences Prairie 360 plans to
offer – including a romantic package
of dinner for two with a single table set
up, a 5-course meal, wine selection,
and private butler to serve you.
A level below the revolving dining
rooms, two lounges with two different
atmospheres are housed. The whiskey
lounge is hunter inspired, featuring
leather walls adorned with Manitoba
game like deer and antelope, wingback
chairs and a granite bar. “We wanted a
bit of a frontier feel to it,” says Bernier.
But the real draw to the room sits
behind the granite-topped bar – a
selection of 150 whiskies. “We’re trying
to include as much local as possible.
We don’t make wine here, but we do
make whiskey. We have a whiskey
past. The feel of it goes hand-in-hand
with that pioneer spirit.” Extensive as
the list of 150 whiskies is, it’s just the
start – over time, they hope to grow
their offerings to 250 or 300 varieties.
Across the lobby is a second lounge
called the recital room, where with
a touch of nostalgia, the design has
remained closest to the original
revolving restaurant. Below an original
chandelier sits a grand piano where
live music will be played, creating a
comfortable, softer atmosphere for
drinks before or after dinner.
Come summer, a third space will form
part of the lounge level – a spacious
rooftop patio where diners can take in
the spectacular views of the city with
no glass in their way.
“The lighting changes minute by
minute. When people are here
during the day, they say ‘It must be so
spectacular at night,’ and when they’re
here at night they can’t wait to come
back and see it during the day!” says
Bernier.
And a lot has changed in the view
since this space was last open, Bernier
points out. “The Hydro building was
built, the Museum for Human Rights
– you can even see the lights of the
stadium jumbotron from here on
game nights! It’s hugely significant
what’s happened.”
And they can’t wait to open their doors
and become a part of it again. “We’re
ready, we think the city’s ready for it,
and we can’t wait to show it off.”

LOCAL
CONNECTIONS
Decor from around the corner and around the world
makes this downtown condo home.

W
hen Katherine
Kosowan and her
husband decided to
make the move back to
Winnipeg after 22 years in Vancouver,
it didn’t take them long to decide
where to live.
“The big thing that brought us back
to Winnipeg was an incredible
opportunity for me at the Canadian
Museum for Human Rights,” says
Kosowan. “Because it’s such an
exciting national project, it seemed the
right thing to do at the right time for an
ex-Winnipegger.”
That meant house-hunting – and after
seeing several places, the search was
quickly narrowed to downtown. “It
was really the main area on our radar
– and when we saw this place in the
Exchange, it didn’t take us long at all to
make an offer.”
The District Condominiums suite
they chose is housed in a repurposed
warehouse, an open loft-style space
with original exposed brick walls. A
wall of windows frosted on the lower
half allows privacy while letting
ample natural light in to the openplan kitchen, living and dining areas.
The larger of two bedrooms is used
as the master suite, while the second
has been converted to a bright and
welcoming office with access to a
small deck outside.
Kosowan and her husband fell for the
space in its original state, and kept
their renovations to a minimum –
changing a door here, a window there
– and instead focused their attention
on furnishings and decor that would
bring their personalities to the space.
“When you walk in, what you
see and feel is a collection of our
life experience,” says Kosowan, a
statement that holds true from the
largest piece of furniture to the

Visitors who want to sit and take off
their shoes can do so on a 90-year-old
pew in the entryway that comes from
Kosowan’s family church. “It was one
of the original pews from the church
where my parents were married and
where my brother and I were baptized
– they had some in storage and I made
a donation to them and was able to
acquire one.”
The sofa – a purchase from The Bay
downtown – is faced by two retrochic chairs in a style known as the
Winnipeg chairs. “The story goes that
there was a prof at the University of
Manitoba architecture faculty named
A.J. Donahue. Around 1950, he had his
students help design these chairs out
of molded wood, and over time they

got nicknamed the Donahue chairs
or the Winnipeg chairs.”
Originally sold at The Bay for $35,
the chairs are now considered
collector’s items. “My understanding
is there’s not a lot of them left –
somewhere between 200 and 2,000,”
says Kosowan, who acquired the
chairs several years apart and had
the upholstery redone (the original
chairs were designed in colours like
mustard, lime green, and orange).
The sleek white dining chairs also
have their own local history. “These
were actually cafeteria chairs
from Winnipeg’s Mint – and they
also happen to be from the same
company that made the chairs used
in the original pilot of Star Trek.”
Every piece is chosen with the same
care that they chose their location
with. What Kosowan loves about the
home they’ve built is being in the
heart of it all.
“What I like is that it is rare for me to
start the car during the week – I can
walk to work, go to my drugstore,
go to my fitness or yoga class, I
can take in some live music, meet
somebody for a drink, all those
things without having to move the
car. And eventually will see a day
where I might not have to do it at
all. With a little more critical mass,
even more amenities will come to the
downtown core.

BAR WITH BITE
Winnipeg’s newest entertainment venue,
the Shark Club, opens in cityplace.

matter | shark club
Its doors just opened, but downtown’s
newest entertainment hotspot, the
Shark Club - a 17,000 sq.-ft gaming
and restaurant venue located on the
second floor of cityplace – is already
making a splash.
“The Shark Club is quite unique in the
sense that it is a form of entertainment
where you can get everything under
one roof,” says John DaCunha of
Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. “You can
have something to eat, go to an event,
and then come back and have a drink
or play a little Blackjack, so everything
ties nicely together.”
The sports bar and grill offers a 360o
blue-lit bar that is surrounded by 50
high-definition televisions, a life-sized
ticker to keep sports fans up to date
with the latest scores, state-of-the art
sound system for sports games and
hyped up DJ nights that see lines of
people outside eager to be part of the
action.
The restaurant also offers a flavourful
menu with favourites such as
California blackened chicken
36
dtw | fall/winter 2013
sandwich and their house-made
Shark burger fully loaded with bacon,
mushroom, cheeses and more. Drink
options include a selection of beer
from some of the best breweries
around the world to delicious
cocktails, martinis and daily specials.
The bar also televises all Jets games,
CFL and NFL games, and pay-per-view
events.
“A lot more people are coming out
and finding out who we are,” says
DaCunha. “It’s a nice entertainment
spot and we see a lot of foot traffic
especially when concerts or Jets games
are on.”
The Shark Club has 140 slot machines,
some with a chance to win big
jackpots, plus Blackjack tables and
Roulette, which see full houses of
players daily with crowds hovering
around them to see if anyone has hit
it big. Customers can also use their
player cards and gain points and
rewards while they play.
Located in the heart of the Sports,
Hospitality, and Entertainment district
(SHED), the Shark Club is helping
the revitalization efforts of downtown
Winnipeg.
“Downtown is so vital and critical
to the well-being of our city,” says
DaCunha. “When you talk about going
to the next level, and being top of mind
for a night out, we’re bringing people
downtown and giving them a really
unique experience here.”
With seating for 500 people in both
the restaurant and gaming room,
the Shark Club is helping create
that experience with an energetic
atmosphere, a bevy of drink and food,
and a chance to win big.
DANCERS
DOWNTOWN
Inspired by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet’s annual
outdoor dance downtown, we asked dancers
living in and visiting Winnipeg to take fall fashion
out for a spin on the streets.
Photography by Rejean Brandt
“I’m quite passionate about what
we are and what we are doing,”
says DaCunha. “We are giving a
great option in this city to come out
and experience something new in
entertainment.”
Shark Club is open seven days a week
from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Big Fun Fest
Jan 22, 2014 - Jan 26, 2014
Christian
Marclay: The
Clock
Manitoba has a reputation for having a rich artistic community as well as bitter prairie
winters. Put them together, and you have the makings of the Big Fun music festival. Using
Winnipeg’s prairie winter as the backdrop, Big Fun showcases the wealth of Manitoba’s
artists alongside our historic downtown. Incorporating various genres of music, Big Fun
takes the shows out of overused bars and clubs, occupying galleries, lofts, and warehouse
spaces instead to create an entirely new event experience.
