The region is incredibly beautiful and possesses not only some of the best beaches in Europe but also picturesque medieval towns and villages where the people are friendly and welcoming. The rolling countryside offers patchwork of vineyards and fruit & market farming whilst the Atlantic coast yields some of the best sea-food in Portugal. With the cost of living a fraction of the Algarve and the opening up of the region by the A8 motorway from Lisbon, the area is becoming a popular investment & holiday destination. Some of the best golf courses in Portugal including true links can be found in this region. It is more favoured by golf enthusiasts than the Algarve as the courses are quieter, cheaper and better. Properties on these resorts have experienced strong capital growth over the last few years and demand continues to be strong. Property outside resorts can still be found at incredible prices e.g. in towns like Lourinha but these are set to rise as the region continues to be discovered by investors and holiday makers across Europe & further afield. With learnings from the Algarve, the Government is carefully controlling the developments in the area to ensure the beauty of the Silver Coast region is maintained. This has slowed down the construction but improved the quality which is good for any new investor. Whatever type of property you are looking for, we at Atlas Property Portugal can help you find the perfect investment or holiday home. The municipality covers an area of approximately 150 km2 with a population of circa 25,000. It is most famous for its dinosaur discoveries & 12 kilometres of coastline with many sandy beaches Silver Coast Residence a condominium of 15 threebedroom properties many with own gardens around a large central pool. The museum itself is world famous and housing some of the most important Palaeontological artefacts particular from the Jurassic period. The Beaches of Lourinhã Tourism is an increasingly important source of revenue, due to the municipality's extensive, picturesque beaches. The 12 kilometres of coastline of Lourinhã comprises 9 different beaches. Peralta Beach Villas a development of 14 plots & individual villas with pools where each has an outstanding view over the Atlantic ocean History The name Lourinhã may be related to the origin of its feudal lord, Jordan a French knight who took part in the successful Siege of Lisbon in 1147, since he was from the Loire region in France. The parish became one of the richest of the Lisbon Diocese, as reflected by its main church, a fine example of 14th-century Portuguese Gothic architecture. In the 16th century, the Franciscan monastery of Santo António and a Misericórdia Church and Charity were founded in Lourinhã. The latter houses a museum with outstanding Renaissance paintings, the most important paintings are by a 16thcentury painter, dubbed the Master of Lourinhã. Lourinhã also has historical links with the defence of Portugal due to its strategic coastal position. One of the major battles of the French Invasion of 1808 the Battle of Vimeiro took place within the municipality. If you are looking for nightlife head for the Bairro Alto which is transformed at dusk into a pulsating area of chic restaurants and lively bars and clubs. A more contemplative and cooling time can be spent at the wonderful Oceanarium which is located in the Expo98 site on the banks of the Tagus. Robinson s comments when asked to design the 18 hole par 72 championship Praia D'El Rey golf course. It is one of the most picturesque layouts in Europe, set in extensive grounds of pine forest and undulating dunes with spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlenga Islands beyond. Other Places to Visit Other areas of history and beauty worth visiting include: Caldas da Rainha: means the queen s baths and was christened thus when Queen Dona Leonora came across locals bathing in the mud at the side of the road so as to cure their ailments. She became convinced of the therapeutic qualities of the local waters and founded what is now the oldest thermal hospital in the world. Caldas is also renowned nationally for its locally-produced cakes and pastries try the Pastelaria Machado opposite the entrance to the park if you have a sweet tooth. The daily flower and produce market should not be missed as this is a fascinating and colourful insight into a way of life which is dying out. Much of the produce is grown locally and could not be fresher, being sold by the local growers. Foz do Arelho: Situated at the mouth of the north side of the Obidos lagoon, Foz do Arelho has been a much-loved destination for the jaded Lisbon city-dweller. Lourinhã to: Caldas da Rainha - 25 Foz do Arelho Fátima 25 mins The beach at Foz, has all of the qualities of the typical silver coast beach, soft white sand, rolling waves and beach bars. There is safe bathing in the lagoon and crashing waves on the other side of the beach where surfing is popular. The numerous beach-side bars offer views over the Atlantic and the lagoon. 50 mins Fátima: welcomes millions of devotees a year who come to pray at the site of a miraculous apparition of the Virgin Mary here in 1917. Three shepherd children had a vision of Mary, who reportedly reappeared on the 13th of each of six subsequent months calling for peace in the world. On the day of the final apparition a crowd of over 70,000 people had gathered and claimed to witness the Miracle. On the sit, a vast white Basilica and esplanade were completed in 1953 as a shrine for the ever growing numbers of pilgrims flocking to the town. It is great to take a walk along the sea wall before heading to one of the many harbour-side restaurants for fresh fish cooked on a barbecue at the roadside. The fort at Peniche became a prison during Salazar s dictatorship and contains many graphic reminders of the difficulties experienced by many Portuguese prior to the bloodless revolution of 1974. Cabo Carvoeiro, the cape with its rocky formations, the beaches, and the cliffs are some of the sites that make Peniche a great centre of tourism. Leisure activities range from water sports, as this is an important surfing zone, to boating and underwater fishing. Baleal Beach: situated just north of Peniche, the two superb beaches are either side of a causeway to the village of Baleal. It is rare that it is not possible to swim here but do be guided by the life-guards and the flags. The water here seems exceptionally clear and the beach shelves gently into the sea so normally safe for little ones or non-swimmers. There are cafes, showers and toilets on the beach. A popular resort with many nationalities. Lourinhã to: Peniche 20 mins Baleal Beach 20 mins Berlengas Island (Boat trip from Peniche): If you are a good sailor why not take the ferry from the quay at Peniche and spend most of a day on the Berlengas, the islands which you can see from the shore. The ferry runs from May until September. The waters around the Berlengas are significantly cooler than off the mainland beaches but they are crystal clear and great for scuba-diving. Built on a rock adjacent to the Berlenga island and connected to it by a small bridge, there stands the Forte de São João Baptista, a Manueline military fortress built in 1502. This is a marine reserve and has been classified by the Council of Europe as a "Biosphere Reserve". The archipelago consists of a large island, Berlenga Grande, and some small granite islands and rocks (Estelas and Farilhões), which are situated some 7 miles off the headland of Cabo Carvoeiro to the north-west of Peniche. The austere aspect is continued within the church where the tombs of King Pedro 1 and Ines de Castro lie. Beyond the church lies the peace and quiet of the Cloister of Silence . Within the Abbey is the massive kitchen with a running stream specially diverted to pass through as a supply of fresh water. The open area of the kitchen chimney is large enough to take a whole ox for roasting. Batalha: offers an example of the baroque and elaborate Manueline architecture and is now a UNESCO world-heritage site. Commenced in 1388, and later added to by various Portuguese Kings over two centuries, the cathedral is an outstanding example of combined Gothic and Manueline architecture. Under its naves lies some of Portugal s most historic personalities including João I, his English wife Philippa of Lancaster, and their son, Prince Henry the Navigator whose determination helped to explore the then unknown world. In the Chapter house also lie two unknown soldiers from World War I. Lourinhã to: Alcobaça 40 mins Batalha 40 mins Nazaré 35 mins Tomar Nazaré: The sweeping sandy beach is packed with holiday-makers in brightly coloured rented tents but it's still possible to see local women wearing the traditional seven-layered and short skirts whilst bearing immense loads on their heads and the town's fishermen sporting woollen shirts and bobble hats. The main promenade Avenida da República is lined with some excellent seafood restaurants and bars. 60 mins Tomar city of the Templars: Tomar is a beautiful city steeped in the history of the Templar movement. The city was gifted to the Templars in 1159 and formed their headquarters until its dissolution in 1314 when its successor the Order of Christ was relocated to the south of the country to protect the Algarvian coast. Built on a simple grid plan, Tomar's old quarters preserve all their traditional charm, with whitewashed, terraced cottages lining narrow cobbled streets. The impressive Covento do Cristo dominates the city and speaks volumes to this day of the power of the Templar movement. The windows on the main facade of its Chapter House are dedicated to the memory to the sailors who established the Portuguese empire.
