It’s a rousing marching tune carried by the brass section with a few short fanfares on trumpet. There are many Grottos (or Chapters, i.e. local caving clubs) of the National Speleological Society scattered across the United States. In 2014, Pennsylvania had as many as 13 Grottos and Tennessee 10 Grottos. Imagine that if an NSS Grotto were ever to march in a town or city parade, on Thanksgiving for instance, well, they would have to get the band to play this march. United Arab Emirates CD: SALUTE TO LEBANON (1996) EMI Arabia 85 2358-2 (Tk 8) Notes: In the late 50s and early 60s the British conductor, arranger, and composer Ron Goodman (see also his other composition – Blue Grotto – PO-BG&US-AF9) made a study of Lebanese musical pieces and their instrumentation. This piece is "based on a composition by the Rabhani Brothers who first put Lebanese popular music on the world map." (Liner Notes 2002) However, there is some confusion regarding the origin of this piece; in parenthesis following the title is the name “Mishwar,” which would seem to indicate that Mishwar, whoever he is, was the composer here. Could be that Mishwar is a pseudonym of the Rabhani Brothers. A crystalline sound is achieved with chimes followed by flute and clarinet with two solos by a mandolin-sounding instrument. The British reissue CD was remastered in 1996 and the United Arab Emirates reissue CD has the liner notes in English, French, and Arabic. The 1967 Lebanese stamp pictured here shows “The Dias & Weeping Willows” formations. The lyrics talk in the first person, as the female bat declares in stanza 2 – You’ll never see me in the light I don’t come out until it’s night I’m not an owl or a cat How do you do – I’m a bat. Then in stanza 3 she talks about the bat doing the cha-cha and the mambo. In the late 1950s these Latin dances became quite popular in middle class America. The last stanza is quite charming – So if you’d like to have a guest I’ll shine my wing to look my best I’ll fly right in an’ lift my hat The vocal side finishes with two chorus of the orchestra performing the simple melody. Side 2 is an entirely instrumental performance of the theme where a vibraphone plays one of the choruses. (Anon. n.d.) Joanie Sommers’ long career as a singer started in 1960. The Brill Building on Broadway and 49th Street in New York City was the established stable barn for American mainstream popular song writers in the 50s and 60s; many huge hits came out of that place. This song was their answer to the new growing influx of “caveman” rock songs that started in 1960 (see under Rock Music – Caveman Songs & Alley Oop). A submissive love song with four stanzas where the chorus gives the basic idea – Oh Johnny get angry, Johnny get mad Give me the biggest lecture that I ever had I want a brave man, I want a cave man Johnny show me that you care, really care for me The orchestral backup here has a chugging rhythm with a strange bridge on kazoo. The personnel for The Reclines listed here are the same musicians who performed on the 1987 album, “Angel with a Lariat,” but the ones playing on this recording may be different. In the first chorus she makes a silent pause after “caveman” and in later choruses she takes even longer pauses after the shouted name “Johnny,” where the audience bursts into applause and then she goes on the sing “show me that you care, really care for me.” For the bridge after the second stanza and chorus, there are short keyboard and mandolin solos. After the last chorus she calls “Johnny” several times and hollers out, then the mandolin slowly solos alone right up to the fade. There are three live performances of the song on YouTube: in 1987, 1990, and another at Munich during a tour. The YouTube video clip of her 1990 live performance for the British Channel Four was probably the closest thing to this recorded version. Ref: K. D. Lang, Biography, Wikipedia K. D. The CD liner notes have this to say about the song – “The middle-eastern vibes of Ali Baba’s Camel return on this brilliant recording by Leslie Sarony’s comedy partner Leslie Holmes (here appearing as Roy Leslie). Very much in the same vein as “Ali Baba’s Camel,” the song mixes images of the desert with British everyday life in surreal car crash of images. The backing is typically Ali Bongo and overall we think this is a number one contender for a song that the Bonzos didn’t cover, but should have. Decca house band director Jay Wilbur and his orchestra provide the backing.” (Anon. n.d.) Omar Khayyám (1048AD-1131AD) was a Persian mathematician, philosopher, astronomer, and poet. His most famous work was the Rabaiyat, a collection of poems. No connection with caves could be found in his life, but a cave probably appears somewhere in his poetry. This comic novelty song has 13 stanzas (see LY-PO25) of which nine mention the cave. Here are a few standouts – II. On the Persian desert there’s a cave That’s where hidden treasure’s laid Omar Khayam’s such a cunning knave From Boy Scouts captured it one day. VI. They excavated, dug the ground Dug so deep at last they found A London train on the Underground In Omar Khayam’s Cave. IX. One young chap who called it spoof Got a kick from a camel’s hoof Then he went sailing through the roof Of Omar Khayam’s Cave. XI. From a desert storm you hide Your wet clothes are quickly dried They hang them up with you inside In Omar Khayam’s Cave. Some of the words and expressions used in the text are typically British and need explanation. In Stz. 3, vs. 3 – “charabangs” are open car buses; Stz. 5, vs. 3 – “Bow” is a suburb in East London; Stz. 12, vs. 4 – “Snakes and Ladders” is a board game for children, which originated in India; and in Stz. 13, vs. 3 – “smash and grab” is about throwing a brick through a jeweller’s window and grabbing the jewels. (Hagen 2010) The compilation CD was a collection of original 1920s and 1930s novelty, jazz, and British dance band recordings that inspired, influenced or were covered by the Bonzo Dog Band. The CD included this song because the compilers thought it might have in some way influenced the far-fetched, screwball style of the Bonzo Dog Band (see under Rock Music – Alley Oop – Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band). An exception was made to include this 2007 compilation here because of the extreme rarity of the original 78. All slows again to the central theme until the final flourishes. The description of the sheet music for young concert band conductors states – “Inspired by the well-known cave on the Mississippi River that Mark Twain wrote about in his famous book 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'. This cave has been the site of many adventures and has held many interesting secrets. Alternating between a hauntingly lyrical slow section and a driving, syncopated ostinato, this creative work provides an excellent opportunity for you to introduce simple changing meter to your ensemble while the 'mysterious and modal!' melodic lines and syncopated rhythms create an outstanding musical framework for a piece which creates the illusion that its more difficult than it really is.” (Anon. n.d.) Located outside Hannibal, Missouri and variously known as McDowell’s Cave, McDougalls Cave, and much later as a show cave it was called Mark Twain Cave. It’s a complex maze cave developed along parallel joints and its principal secret is finding out the best way not to get confused by the many similar passages. The conductor’s score has a nice introduction with program notes giving a fairly accurate history of this cave from 1819 to the present. The cave photo is a glossy photo postcard published by L.L. Time: 2:40 LP: TOM SAWYER Decca DL 8432 (mono) 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Part 10) Notes: A musical stage production of the story originally presented on the Untied States Steel Hour television show. The original name of this cave was Simm's Cave, after Jack Simms who found it around 1819. Then it became known as Saltpeter Cave and, in the late 1840s, Dr. Joseph McDowell purchased it. Mark Twain changed the name from McDowell's Cave to McDougal's Cave in his fictional works. Later, with the success of Twain's book, which appeared in 1976, many tourists started visiting the cave and the name was again changed to Mark Twain Cave. (Weaver 1972) Frank Luther was, "after Vernon Dalhart, perhaps the most prolific recording artist of country music in the 1920s and 30s." But in 1936 he started devoting himself almost entirely to making children's records. (Vaughn 1977) The lyrics of this ballad are sung in a narrative manner accompanied by acoustic guitar. Cooper introduces it with – "Tom and Becky going on a picnic in McDougals Cave…" And stanza 2 & 3 carry on the tale – II. Now Tom takes Becky by the lily-white hand Says, "Becky, I know this cave." He leads her down in the black blackness Damp and cold as a grave. III. They walk through the cave an' their hearts are so light They light up their way with a candle so bright Now this way, now that way, new pathways they find Until their companions are left far behind. (See LY-PO23 for full lyrics) Regarding the composer and script writer, Frank Luther – “One of country music’s most prolific and talented artists in the 1920s and 30s was Frank Luther; the incomparable singer of many voices and many names… Frank and Robbie (Carson Robison after he left Vernon Dalhart) were eminently successful recording together from 1928 to 1932… Frank’s career was monumentally changed after 1936 by an album of Mother Goose nursery rhymes he recorded… Frank enrolled in New York University and became a serious student of the uses of recorded music in education and therapy, with emphasis on the needs of children. He devoted himself almost entirely to making children’s records thereafter, and over the next decade about 85 percent of all children’s sold in the United States were recorded by Frank.” (Vaughn 1977) (See above PO-GB&US-GZ8 and under Spoken Word –Children’s numerous spoken word recordings of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.) Actually the song never was used anywhere in the film. Boone was inspired by the movie to write it and he recorded it before the film's release. Despite an upbeat rock 'n' roll waltz rhythm the lyrics have that sentimental, sugary-sweet flavor so typical of Boone's songs. It begins – I. For love so true, my love II. To bring you, joy, my love For love so rare, my love Beyond compare, my love I'd follow you, my love I'd even go, my love To the center of the earth. To the center of the earth. CHORUS: Say you'll be mine, my love Make my life divine, my love And we will find, my love What a real true love is worth It's worth all the gold From here to the center of the earth. The three other songs on this EP album were actually sung by Boone in the film. They were stuck in by contract agreement with Boone and also presumably to enhance the commercial values of the film. None of them have any bearing on the adventure story itself nor do they have any relation to caves. In the movie, Alec sings "My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose" to his girl Jenny in the parlor of her uncle's (Professor Lindenbrook's) home. "Twice As Tall" is sung while he is taking a shower bath in the crystal geode cave chamber. He plays few bars of "The Faithful Heart" on the concertina while they all float on the raft in the Central Sea, just before they hit the whirlpool. Three additional songs not included on this EP: "The Professor's Song," "My Heart's In the Highlands," and "Come Spring" are sung during the course of the film either above or below ground. The jacket cover of the EP used the same painting that appeared on some of the ad posters for the film. This song was included in the NSS Audio-Visual Aids program, "Caves On Phonograph Records" which I had first presented at the 1967 NSS Convention held in Huntsville and Birmingham, Alabama. The Tuva Republic of Russia is located in southern Russia north of Mongolia. Regarding Tuvan music – “Traditionally music from Tuva was only a solo effort. The musician’s intention was usually to emphasize timbre and harmonics over rhythm. The performances were often in places of natural acoustics such as caves, cliffs, rivers, and so on. The performer would often take long pauses to allow nature its own chance to converse back.” (Anon. 2 n.d.) Siegfried is a traditional magician, or illusionist, while Roy grew up among exotic animals. (Anon. 1 n.d.) However, nothing could be learned about their carriers as musicians. A 30-second audio clip of this piece had a strong rolling rhythm and theme. Without an audition of the entire piece it is difficult to classify this music.
