Notes: Musicians from the San Francisco-Sacramento area heavily influenced by the psychedelic music of
the sixties. No doubt inspired by some rock club called "The Grotto." The lyrics tell how –
All the revolutionaries are revolting …
And go on to address Mrs. Zealot (a former school teacher?) –
For teaching us the meaning of success …
The chorus repeats the line –
Man, it's gonna be great
to get back to the grotto.
A long break on guitar is followed by –
The politicians who get busted seem so dumb
but they're the only ones we catch …

suitably cave-like. Whereas the main song melody and instrumental bridge show a marked influence of the
Pink Floyd. The lyrics talk about sunlight, breezes, and the moon but don't mention caves. The chorus is in
Japanese.

down again and they return to the opening relaxed psych ballad.

Notes: The brilliant "Cave of Clear Light", is now considered a psych classic. (Anon. n.d.) “Following Cave
of Clear Light from beginning to end is like having an audio documentary of the way the underground music
scene unfolded in England during the aforementioned era (1967-1975). Folk-rock and full-on paisleypatterned, canyons-of-your-mind psychedelia were the flavors of the day at the beginning.” (Allen 2016)
The Allmusic critic called this a “sitar-laden” number in the “ethereal psychedelic” mode. (Eder 2016) These
lyrics, telling about the meditating hermit, are quite reminiscent of the verses set down by the Beatles in
their song, "The Fool on the Hill" (1967).
Wiley Miller – 2007
This all Welsh group was from Swansea, Wales. Later in 1968 they recruited Deke Leonard from the
Dream, changed their name to Man, and went on to much greater fame. (Logan & Woffinden 1976)
"Clive John, the co-writer of this song, admits that it's one of the tracks of that period 'I can't listen to without
wincing … a bit of a taster of what was to come.' Its fashionable eastern influence rightly suggests a
wakening rock consciousness that was to see the band break free of their chart-oriented stance." (Heatley,

Notes: Linn County was a San Francisco psychedelic rock group.
Very nice title here, but the chorus begins:
I'm gonna build myself a cave (2X)
An' move down in the ground (2X)
When I come back out
I'll be the mellowest man around.
The word "cave" here clearly indicates a man-made underground shelter not a natural cave, but since
compositions named after jazz cellars have been included in this discography it was felt that this one could
be included also.
The curious similarity to the earlier John Lee Hooker song lyrics (see under Jazz Music – Blues – Build
Myself a Cave JZ-BL3 & 4) is perhaps coincidental. Steve Miller's delivery is so muddled and the audio mix
of the ultra-loud instruments is so bad that it is extremely difficult to decipher all the lyrics. The general
message is that the world is in bad shape and the smartest idea is to move underground.

Notes: A very borderline cave song since the lyrics have little to do with caves other than that the last two
verses end with the title line – "Come into my cave," The melody consists of variations on a simple chant
with the lyrics sung in a deliberate, punctuated manner. The general idea behind it all seems to be that life
is rough out in the world for night people but some relief can be had by coming into a cave (i.e. dwelling).
The guitar solo on the bridge is psychedelic enough.
The last stanza runs –
And up at the evening time the world is closing
And you've survived another destined moment
And in the middle of it all you're still hoping –
Come into my cave.
There appears to be no relation between the undersea cave LP cover art and this song.

Notes: From beginning to end the music has a decidedly subterranean feel partly achieved through the
echo effects and the pinging "water drop" notes on the electric piano. The first stanza of the lyrics makes a
passing reference to caves –
Overhead the albatross
Hangs motionless upon the air
And deep beneath the rolling waves
In labyrinths of coral caves
An echo of a distant time
Comes willowing across the sand
And everything is green and submarine.
It thus seems justifiable to consider this valid cave music despite the ambiguous title. (The original title,
"Return of the Son of Nothing," was used at the first public performance on May 15, 1971). Many
compositions with more explicit titles are far less successful in conjuring up a musical impression of caves
than this piece. And just to illustrate the point, this music was used effectively to accompany the West
German television Film, "Taucher im Fels" (1977), a cave diving documentary for ZDF Television about the
fantastic 930 meter solo dive made by Jochen Hasenmayer in the siphons of Rinquelle, a cave near
Arvenbühl in northeast Switzerland.
(Feller 1977)
[This clear and purified sound, above which the guitar sores, often brilliantly (“Echoes’), accounts a great
deal for the beauty of ‘Meddle’ … With an equilibrium all its own, in the way that the Pink Floyd have
measured out the elements which make up its very essence, "Echoes" is practically, by itself alone, one of
the best numbers of the group. One rediscovers the latent violence of “Ummagumma,” the calm of the
ballads of “More,” and also momentarily the madness of “A Sauceful of Secrets,” before a sensation of
intense liberation breaks through in the finale, the broad smile of a group that has just accomplished the
highest musical summit in five years of existence.]
The “Meddle” album reached no. 3 on the British Official Charts and no. 2 on the Dutch MegaCharts.
A selection from this piece was used in my paper, “Speleo-Discography: A Progress Report,” which I
presented at the 2005 UIS (International Speleological Union) Congress at Kalamos in Greece.

Notes: Numerous live recordings of this cave rock composition were made illegally over the years and
released worldwide on bootleg vinyl or CDs. These vary widely in running times; some longer and some
shorter than the original official version. The sound quality also varies enormously.
Two notable Pink Floyd discographies by Miles and by Heylin list 12 bootleg LPs and 50 CDs that all
include “Echoes.” These 62 releases cover 26 different venues (plus 4 unidentified concerts) all over the
world where this composition was recorded live: the earliest in Rome on 20 June 1970 and the most recent
(according to lists) at Philadelphia, PA on 19 Sept. 1987. (Miles 1981 & Heylin 1995)
At least four Websites list many, many more bootlegs (vinyl & CD) that include live versions of “Echoes.” It
was considered totally impossible and utterly beyond the scope and purpose of this discography to attempt
to list in detail all these bootleg recordings; others have done a fine job of this (see links below).
“Echoes” was one of the pieces performed for the 1972 documentary concert film, Pink Floyd: Live at
Pompeii, where the song was split into two parts; as the lead off and closing piece (see the videos below).
The music from this documentary was released on a double bootleg LP album in the United States (1974)
and Italy (1985).
“Echoes,” along with three other Pink Floyd compositions, was choreographed for the modern ballet troupe,
Les Ballet de Marseille, by Roland Petit and presented in Paris during Jan.-Feb. 1973. With the group
playing on an elevated rear stage, "Echoes" began with the lower dance stage in darkness. Then a dancer
emerged from beneath the rear stage through the strongly backlit doorway (suggesting a cave as seen
from within). The bootleg recording of this concert is available on the bootleg LPs entitled, "Blow Your Mind
Until You Die," (Miles 1981 & floydboots)

Notes: One track from a recording session, which has been released on unauthorized bootleg discs many
times in many forms on vinyl (several colors) and on CDs. Some of these are either reissues or bootleg
copies of the original bootleg disc. This particular track is a studio recording, thought to be one of the
unused pieces composed for the Antonioni film, "Zabriskie Point" (1970). The Pink Floyd composed a
whole suite of material for this film. Three of these tracks were released commercially on the film sound
track album in March 1970. However, there is nothing in the movie even vaguely resembling a cave scene.
The story takes place in the United States where there is no Fingal’s Cave. Mabbett speculates that this
title “may be the invention of bootleggers, rather than the band themselves.” (Mabbett 2010)
Heavy intense chords are played incessantly on guitar with frequent sounds of the crash cymbal, which
could be interpreted as crashing waves in the cave. The take 2 of this piece was released on CD in 2004
(see next entry below).
Regarding the title of the original bootleg, "Omayyad" was an Arab kingdom of people in Syria (extending
from Spain to India) in the 7th and 8th Centuries.
See also other compositions inspired by Fingal’s Cave and titled as such: the celebrated overture by
Mendelssohn (well over one hundred different versions under Classical Music); two different Celtic pieces
(one traditional piece performed by many groups – both under World Music – Scotland) and one by Anne
Wylie (under World Music – Scotland); three arrangements of Mendelssohn’s music for organ (under
Popular Music – United Kingdom); plus two rock arrangements of Mendelssohn’s music (under Rock Music
– Hard Rock & Disco – The Caves).
The audio sample at YouTube clocks at 6:43, so one can ask if this is the complete unreleased version.

Notes: A cave rock song with a psychedelic feel somewhat reminiscent of The Bystanders "Cave of Clear
Light." However, here the lyrics tell of the moon – In this cave I have found just for us …
And the chorus –
Just for you because you're perfect
O mental patch it swells and shudders
All your skin and hair in moonlight
With a hole in the roof
Where we can watch our planet circle away.
He invites her to jump up here onto the moon and start a family – In this cave on the moon.
Then all ends with –
Where we can watch our planet circle away and come back (2X)
In the cave on the moon (4X)
One critic said that this song – “is a fully formed, engrossing, and wonderfully atmospheric journey into selfrevelation through musical release. The opening minute of the song sees Patrick Fitzgerald slowly emoting
fractured poetic vocals over Dan Goodwin's steady drumbeat and ringing background bass notes. Not until
Julian Swales's (sic) impressionistic guitars creep out of the woodwork does the band's full tapestry come
into focus. Once his gleaming, pristine sounds fill the air, Fitzgerald and Goodwin kick things into overdrive,
and the song takes on a twisted, perfect energy of its own. "In a Cave" is disturbing, in part because of the
addictive, uneasy mingling of Fitzgerald's growling, paranoid vocals and the epic sheets of sound emitted
from Swales's (sic) guitar. It's to the band's credit that it opens its debut with such a challenging, edgy song.
That it would hit few wrong notes thereafter is a testament to the quality of its particular brand of sonic.”
(DiGravina, n.d.)

Notes: This is the third song included on a special CD issued by
UNEP (United Nations' Environment Programme)/ EuroBats, a nongovernmental conservation service dedicated to the understanding
and protection of bats, based in Bonn, Germany. For more information
see under Soul and Funk Rock – We Are Your Friends.
The piece starts with some rhythmic imitation bat clicking sounds and beeps then hard drum runs and bass
chords. The teenage voice of Nagel delivers the rather imperative lyrics (See Rock Song Lyrics) followed
by a psychedelic guitar bridge. The fifth verse of the chorus includes two bad errors – “He doesn’t have brown
eyes or fur” – on the contrary bats do have dark brown or black eyes and they all have fur. Then the last
verse of the chorus has to go and give that old tired falsehood – “…some say he’s blind.” The last verses of
the second stanza tell the tragic reality about the barbaric bat hunters waiting with their guns.
This powerful song stands very well by itself, but on this CD this piece seems completely out of context with
the feeling of the two gentle soul songs by Ernest Clinton, which are presented here under Soul Music.

One critic pointed out that – “the backup vocals on ‘Remlaps’s Cave - Part II’ indicate that they did their
share of listening to The Who’s ‘A Quick One, While He’s Away’.“ (Unterberger 2016)
If this is part 2 of the song, "Remlap's Cave," it is not known if part 1 was ever recorded. Note that one of
their song publishing companies is called "Remlap's", but if there is the connection is not known.

Notes: Puhdys, founded in East Germany in 1965, are a veteran German rock band with numerous albums
to their credit starting in 1974 right up to 2012.
This piece has some nice original ideas. It starts out as a psychedelic instrumental where the vocal sneaks
in as if arriving from afar. The stanzas are sung-spoken followed by bursts of the band ensemble. Then the
chorus is sung over strong guitar riffs. At a certain point near the end all goes silent and you think it’s over –
no – they all come back as if from the center of the earth and the lead singer is barely heard calling from
the distant depths.
The lyrics consist of three stanzas and a chorus. They tell of burrowing their way through cold and rock
surrounded by lightening. Then finding –
Smaragde traten aus Gestein
In Höhlen voller blauem Glas.
Emeralds stuck out from the rock
In caves full of blue glass.
The chorus –
Uns trieb die Sehnsucht
The longing drove us
uns trieb nicht Ruhm und Geld
fame and money did not drive us
Uns trieb die Sehnsucht
The longing drove us
zum Mittelpunkt der Welt.
to the center of the world.

Spec: (No. A) 12" 33rpm (Sd 1 – Bd 4)
Notes: An eminently danceable blues in a psychedelic mode; a stunning classic, absolutely wild.
“The cover drawing of a cave man is completely apt. Joseph sings like he’s about to hit you in the head
with a club. His gruff, gravely voice is completely perfect for songs.” (Rockin-Hood 2009)
Another critic added – “Joseph’s Stoned Age Man was served up like a sizzling hot rattlesnake appetizer
slathered in fuzz-blooz grease in 1969 (sic). Legend has it that the titles of eight of the album’s nine songs
came before they were written on the spot, which speaks volumes for the talents of Joseph (aka. Joseph
Longeria) — who A&R man Steve Tyrell signed to Scepter Records after witnessing the Lone Star State
bluesman gig with B.B. King and T-Bone Burnett. Brandishing his guitar like a Cro-Magnon’s club, Joseph
mixes his fuzzy licks with meat-grinder vocals as he loudly ruminates of fattened snakes, fish heads,
mountains, cavemen and gumbo in the maddest peyote hallucination Alley Oop never had. Long revered
among collectors, this fine slab o’ rock gets its first-ever reissue from the original masters, pressed at RTI
onto 180 grams of cold hard vinyl that’ll rip your turntable from its hinges.” (Irwin 2013)
The second stanza kinda spells it out – Stone Age man, why [solid] he ?
Seems as no other place you'd rather be;
Stone Age man crawled in his cave;
Couldn't be that they would be a slave.
He was a Stone(d) Age man !
He was a Stone(d) Age man !
Yeah, yeah, yeah – Yeeah, a Stone(d) Age man !
The way he sings “Stone(d) Age man” it’s very difficult to hear whether it’s supposed to be “Stone” or
Stoned,” but then that’s surely what was intended.
Verses 5 & 6 of the third stanza say it again – Deep in the cave, you're the Stone(d) Age man.
He went wild like a wild child
For the full lyrics go to Rock Song Lyrics where one or two words may have been transcribed incorrectly.
You wanna find another really fine wailing psychedelic blues, try listening to Joe Cocker & The Grease
Band doing, “With a Little Help from My Friends,” or maybe Alvin Lee of Ten Years After doing, “I’m Going
Home,” at the legendary rock concert of all rock concerts for all time, Woodstock, August 1969.
Concerning the Memphis recording scene – "Having been the prime source of white rock 'n' roll in the midfifties, Memphis was associated primarily with rhythm and blues music throughout the sixties. (Gillett, 1870)
The 2014 Sundazed Music reissue LP is easy to find online, so you’d be advised to get down an’ get it.
Joseph should not be confused with the 1971 group, Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat that
had David Daltry on guitar.
This song was used for the "Cavers' Hop" at the 1995 Old Timers' Reunion in Randolph County, West
Virginia.

Notes: Velvett Fogg was based in Birmingham. This is in the solid psychedelic rock mode – “‘Yellow Cave
Woman’ is a basic riff and lyric that keeps on going for several interminable minutes without variation.”
(Unterberger, 2016)
The chorus – She's my Yellow Cave Woman
She's my Yellow Cave Woman
The third stanza tells of a very stoned woman –
She acted so well drugged
She smoked her mind
She's acting like she's been bugged
With a delicate explosion of blown time
One critic wrote – “’Yellow Cave Woman,’ is the highlight of the album, a hypnotic, droning slice of heavy
psych written by Law. To me, it is almost a companion piece to Hotleg’s ‘Neanderthal Man,’ featuring a
similar drumbeat but with lots of organ and lead guitar. A move to the dominant second chord in what might
considered the chorus (it’s that primitive) is especially effective.” (Anon. 2013)
