As one year’s set for the record books, another begins.
We hope the recent weeks have been full of activity,
comradery and fun. We set a single-day instant sales
record of $10.1 million Dec. 24. Retailers sold $44.2
million worth of Ohio Lottery games for the week ending
Dec. 26, another record. Thank you for making this
such a spectacular holiday season. Now, after a brief break, we’ve turned our
sights to 2016, with a goal of helping you get the year off to a good start.
Use the post-holiday slowdown to schedule a meeting with your sales
representative. Review your sales and develop a game plan for the year.
What are your priorities? You may want to discuss current Lottery-supported
activities like the $30 instant ticket sales incentive and this month’s Keno
Double Win promotion. Maybe training tops your list. If you feel your
employees could use a refresher on their Lottery skills, your sales representative
and regional office staff can provide coaching and guidance.
This month, the Ohio Lottery debuts its first mobile coupon, with a special
discount geared toward our Pick 3 players. The first 50,000 customers to
download the coupon can visit your store for a free Pick 3 wager. All you
need to do is scan the QR code to redeem the coupon. Technology continues
to grow in importance, and we’re finding new ways to make the Ohio Lottery
convenient for customers, many of whom use smart phones as part of their
everyday lives.
This month, we salute retailers in our annual fiscal year in review, which
begins on page 6. Use this information as a starting point to talk to your sales
representatives about your hopes and goals at retail this year.
Make sure your point-of-sale is up -- Break the Bank, the Lottery’s supersized
10" x 7.8" instant game, is expected to reach your store Jan. 14. Customers
who enjoy the value of extended-play and higher-priced games are sure to love
it. A quick review of the game can be found on page 3.
You might consider improving your Lottery cashing services as a goal for your
staff this year. Retailers like John McClain of Stack’s Drive Thru know the
value and the extra commission that comes with cashing prizes of up to $599.
Learn more about his Mansfield-area drive thru and his tips to help you excel.
Thank you for the time, effort and courtesy you show customers and the
community you serve. We look forward to continuing the journey with you.
Here’s to a good year for all!
Sincerely,
Dennis Berg, Director

Fiscal Year 2015:
A year in review
In Fiscal Year 2015, Ohio Lottery sales
from traditional retail outlets topped
$2.892 billion, an increase of $148.9
million or 5.4% compared to the previous
year. Retailers earned approximately
$179.2 million in commissions and
bonuses, an increase of 5.5% percent from
the prior year.
The unique niche that is lottery continues
to do well with the Ohio Lottery holding
its own in the new gaming landscape. In
LaFleur’s national ranking of U.S. lotteries,
the Ohio Lottery ranks ninth in total sales
and 10th in instant sales among the 47
U.S.-based lotteries.
A review of operations planned for Fiscal
Year 2016 is expected to support this
upward trend.
The Numbers Games
Pick 3 has the distinction of being the
top-selling draw game throughout the Ohio
Lottery’s history. As the Ohio Lottery’s
oldest draw game, Pick 3 sales of $338.0
million in Fiscal Year 2015 held steady,
down 0.3% or $1.0 million, from the
previous year. Category growth came from
the Pick 4 and Pick 5 games. Pick 4 sales
were $192.8 million, up $7.0 million or
3.8% from the prior year. Pick 5 generated
sales of $33.3 million, up $5.4 million or
19.5% from Fiscal Year 2014.
In-State Lotto Games
The Ohio Lottery sold two jackpot-winning
tickets for Classic Lotto during the fiscal
year; the first on Dec. 27, 2014 and the
second on Feb. 25, 2015. Shell Food
Mart on East Western Reserve Road in
Youngstown sold the first ticket, whose
lucky winner secured the game’s $11.1
million jackpot prize. The second ticket,
worth $3.5 million, was sold at Rod Dees
Party Supply of Miamisburg.
Players purchased $31.0 million worth of
Classic Lotto wagers during the fiscal year,
taking home $14.2 million in prizes.
Rolling Cash 5, the Ohio Lottery’s “little
lotto” game, provided 103 winning jackpots
to its lucky players. The jackpot reached
a high of $789,000 July 18, 2014, with
two jackpot-winning tickets sold, one at
Giant Eagle in New Albany and the second
at Churchill Commons Giant Eagle in
Youngstown.
Rolling Cash 5 players purchased $62.6
million in wagers,
sharing $32.5 million in
prizes during the fiscal
year.
Multi-State Games
The Ohio Lottery started
the fiscal year with a jackpot-winning
Powerball ticket sold July 9, 2014 at True
North in Conneaut. The jackpot settled at
$124.9 million, with the winner, also a
Conneaut native, choosing the cash option
payment. This was Ohio’s third Powerball
jackpot win since joining the game in
2010.
Powerball sales were $105.0 million, down
14.4% or $17.7 million compared to the
previous year. Both Powerball and Mega
Millions underperformed nationally, with
slower jackpot growth impacting sales.
The Multi-State Lottery Association
changed the Powerball matrix in October
2015 (Fiscal Year 2016) to counter the
downward sales trend. The group created
a 10x Power Play option for Powerball to
encourage play at lower jackpot levels,
changed the matrix to help the jackpot
grow and improved odds of winning any
prize.
Powerball secured its highest jackpot of
the fiscal year Feb. 11, 2015, with a
$500 million advertised jackpot split by
players in North Carolina, Puerto Rico and
Texas. Ohio Lottery customers took home
$4.0 million in prizes from the near-record
jackpot, and retailers secured $762,600
in commissions for that drawing. Big
drawings create a significant financial
opportunity for retailers able to keep up
with player demand.
Mega Millions sales were $113.2 million,
down 15.1% or $20.1 million compared
to Fiscal Year 2014. While the jackpot
remained elusive in Fiscal Year 2015,
six lucky ticket holders each took home a
$1-milllion prize.
Instant/Online Games
EZPLAY® Games offered another bright
spot in Ohio Lottery sales in Fiscal Year
2015. Sales of EZPLAY® Games were
$99.8 million, up 17.7% or $15.0
million compared to Fiscal Year 2014.
Players enjoyed the variety of games, with
progressive jackpot games – Perfect Game
300, Going Pro and Rock’n 777s standing
out as this segment’s top performers.
EZPLAY® Tap Games, offered in veteran
and fraternal organizations and club since
October 2014, generated $23.9 million in
sales.
KENO
KENO continues to grow, with players
making $329.5 million in Keno and
Booster® purchases. Overall Keno/
Booster® game sales increased $31.4
million or 10.5% from Fiscal Year 2015.
Growing each year since its debut in 2008,
Keno is on its way to becoming the Ohio
Lottery’s top-selling draw game.
The Ohio Lottery ran nine statewide Keno
promotions to provide added-value and
expand its customer base. In Fiscal Year
2016, the Lottery aims to continue that
momentum with new promotions, training
aids, point-of-sale material and new game
features to appeal to customers.
Instant Games
Instant game sales of $1.551 billion were
up 8.7 percent or $124.2 million from the
previous year. Instant games benefitted
from the introduction of $500 Million
Spectacular, the Ohio Lottery’s second
$30 game. Together with 40th Anniversary
Millions, these two $30 games made
up approximately 13.2% of Ohio Lottery
instant game sales. Based on the number
of tickets sold, Cash Explosion, which
moved from a $1 to $2 price point with the
June 26, 2014 game release, remains the
top-selling instant game.
Looking Ahead
Lucky for Life, which debuted Nov. 15,
offers a new style multi-state game with
attractive “for life” prizes. The Ohio Lottery
looks forward to celebrating its own “for
life” winners and, in fact, had its first big
winner Dec. 7, with a $25,000 a year for
life ticket sold at C & S Beverage & Liquor
in Cleveland.
The Lottery is looking to create excitement
in its growing segment of EZPLAY® Games.
The Ohio Lottery plans to release an
EZPLAY® progressive suite of games this
spring. Offered in $1, $5 and $10 price
points, each game will play the same way
but offer an individual prize structure, with
sales from all three games funding a
progressive jackpot.

Stack's
Drive Thru,
Mansfield
By Marie Kilbane Seckers, Communications
Getting to know his customers isn’t too much of a stretch
for John McClain, Stack's Drive Thru's personable, hands-on
manager and retired career military intelligence analyst.
“I wouldn’t say anything surprises
me, but I would say people are
becoming more savvy on how
to play and what they want,” he
says.
The Ashland native, who calls
Mansfield home, takes care of
day-to-day operations for store
owner and father-in-law, Chris
Stackhouse.
“Most folks are friendly,” he says.
“It’s good to keep up with them,
see how they’re doing and provide
a service.”
He’s worked hard to make Stack's
Drive Thru an integral part of
the community, supporting local
baseball and football teams,
sponsoring golf outings and
community-focused fundraisers.
Located off Highway 42, the
traffic has helped build a steady
stream of customers. The
business itself is made up of a
drive thru beverage store and,
adjacent to that, a 5' by 8'
building with drive up capability
on two sides. That’s where
Stack’s Drive Thru sells Lottery.
Keys to Success
• Cash winning tickets. Provide your
business with access to a small reserve
to pay winning customers. When popular
numbers for Pick 3 or Pick 4 are drawn,
John McClain makes sure Stack’s Drive
Thru employees are able to pay their
winning customers.
• Take time to show customers how to
play, and let customers know about the
Lottery’s value-added promotions. John’s
favorite? Bundle Play. He’s also one of
the top-selling Bundle Play retailers in the
state.
• Hold second-chance drawings. John finds
second-chance drawings for both instant
and draw games hold appeal for customers
new to the Lottery. “It helps bring people
into the Lottery who don’t necessarily play
it or don’t know how to and want to learn
about it,” he says.
• “Be kind…be predictable, be sensitive to
their needs,” says John, referring to both
employees and customers. “This is how to
have fun in today’s business.”
He knows how important it is for his business to have the
latest tickets. The store carries up to 55 instant games.
“It’s a good business,” says sales representative Brian

Building relationships, helping customers makes
Stack's Drive Thru a top-notch retailer. “It’s important
to reach out to the community and be seen as community
oriented,” says John. From left to right: Employee Barbara
Howard and John McClain, manager, Stack’s Drive Thru,
Mansfield.
Peterson. “It’s very busy with cars
coming and going all the time…
they always sell out their games,”
he says.
John says that he is surprised by
how many retailers don’t cash
tickets.
“The only way to make money is
by cashing tickets,” he says. “If
you sell 38-40 books a week that
might be $8,000 in commissions;
and if you cash that’s $14,000.
It’s what you’ve got to do and it
makes people happy.”
As time permits, you’ll see John
take a few minutes to explain to
customers how to play a game.
He works with them when playing
doesn’t go exactly as planned too.
When a customer won $5,000
recently, he helped her with the
paperwork and directed her to the
nearest bank cashing site.
“She was so happy,” he says.
“Because we take the time to
introduce customers to our games
and to Bundle Play, that’s why
we’re successful,” John says. “If you don’t talk to or get to
know your customers more, you’re at a disadvantage. I like
to know our customers and the trust is there.”
