Tradition meets modernism
When approaching the restaurant La
Tegala in Mácher you will recognize the
exceptional award winning architecture
of the building concept. An old Canarian
house was converted with modern
parts into a building that maintains
the tradition whilst including modern
influences.
The same concept runs through the
whole place. The inside decor as well
as the dishes offered are a reflection
of Canarian traditions, but always
mixed with a modern touch. Antonio
Hernández, owner of La Tegala, knows
the tradition of the Canarian cuisine very
well, for over 20 years he has run the
very popular restaurant La Era in Yaiza.
In his new restaurant he implements
all his experience in a smaller, more
exquisite and modern frame in search
of a Canarian cuisine with class. “The
kitchen has latest modern standards
and we are able to control the process
of cooking, up to the last detail. Cooking
with constant 60 degrees contains the
structure of the produce, for example
our lamb is cooked in the oven for 14
hours” explains Antonio.
Talking with Antonio you will notice very
quickly that he is a passionate fan of
“good cuisine”. His strong desire to create
something special has achieved that,
the dishes of La Tegala have established
themselves as a new quality mark on the
island. A mention in the new edition of
the internationally known gastronomy
guide Michelin is the best proof of that
achievement. But whilst offering high
quality the most important baselines of
popular cooking were not forgotten: the
guest has to be satisfied and decoration
is only meant to decorate the dishes.
Next to the spectacular dinning area
with astonishing views to Fuerteventura
La Tegala also offers smaller and more
intimate rooms as well as a bodega which
was constructed in the old water tank of
the house. Here Antonio stores over 130
different sorts of wine and the room can
be rented for special occasions.
Look out during your excursions on
the island for the small village of
Mácher and for sure you will see the
spectacular building of La Tegala. A
visit is highly recommended, dishes as
rabbit salmorejo from La Palma, cooked
lamb with honey or the fish stew with
gofio present the classic ingredients of
the Canarian cuisine in a modern and
tasteful environment.

B
odega Stratvs is the youngest and most modern bodega in the spectacular
wine region of La Geria. It has been founded as homage to the wine farmer of
the island and their unique form of planting grapes on Lanzarote, the bodega

A pleasure for the whole family
I
n Puerto del Carmen you will find the biggest recreational park of Lanzarote and
during a visit you can expect to see a variety of shows as well as an impressive
range of different types of animals over a large area. This well designed and
beautifully kept site invites you to stay the whole day and if you return in the evening
you can also have a lot of fun.
The main attractions of the more than 50.000 square metre park are for sure the
three different animal shows. In the birds of prey show you can see eagles from
north America, big vultures and a lot of other birds in a flying display that gives you
the unique opportunity to see these animals as close as never before. During the 20
minute show the impressive birds will fly right over your head and you will also see
how they hunt and fish.
During the sea lions show in the big open air pool you will see different acrobatic
tricks of these friendly animals. Rings are collected in the water, big jumps are
performed and everybody gets the opportunity to see the sea lions face to face and
make some great photos with them.

The funny highlight of the shows, and
especially popular among children, is
the Parrots and cockatoos show that you
can see in the restaurant of the park. The
colourful parrots show their intelligence
resolving complicated mathematical
tasks and also their ability to do a lot of
human things like driving cars, playing
basket ball, riding bicycles or on roller
skates. Every task is solved by the birds
with great skill and to the great delight
of the crowd.
But the shows are only a small part of
all the things that Rancho Texas Park
has to offer. More then 50 different
species of animals in authentic habitats
can be seen. In the opera house you will
hear the constant chorus of songbirds,
in the liliput-park kids can see a lot
of small animals such as baby goats
or small rabbits, American bison with
their extraordinary physique impress
everybody, in the gold mine the little
ones can search for treasures, and in
the many Indian tipis that you’ll find all
around the park you are welcome to relax
a little between the different attractions.
Two white tigers and a wide area with
pumas are among other highlights of
the visit. Between the visits you can dine
and get refreshments at the parks own
restaurant.
Next to the entertainment aspect, the
park also tries to spread a message among
the visitors: respect for nature and the
animals. The mixture of the Lanzarote
natural landscape and north American
animals creates an international context
that tries to show the importance of
nature and a respectful handling of the
animals, and this natural aspect is a high
valued addition to the offer the island
has to tourists.
At night the whole park becomes a
fantastic Wild-West show and while
enjoying the barbecue and free drinks
you will see a great show with live
country music. Take part in the Square
Dance and you’re guaranteed to have
fun!

Nippon Teppanyaki
The Japanese art of cuisine
T
he restaurant Teppanyaki Nippon is the oldest and most popular Japanese
restaurant in Lanzarote and right in the centre of the harbour in Puerto del
Carmen Tao and his wife Sinh invites you to a tasteful journey in the art of
Japanese cuisine. From Sushi to Sashimi or Tempura and the spectacular cooking
show on the teppanyaki-table you will find lots things to taste and enjoy.
The Teppanyaki Nippon has existed for over 12 years now and more and more
residents have begun to appreciate the fine tastes of the Japanese cuisine. At first
Japanese dishes were not very known in Lanzarote but quickly owner and chef Tao
convinced his guests with excellent quality. With new sushi variations Tao is always
good for a surprise and the use of Canarian ingredients as fresh fish of the island
or fruits as mango or papaya always offer new variations that you will not find
anywhere else.
The theory that Japanese cuisine automatically means raw fish was changed with
the installation of three big teppanyaki tables. This is a special way of preparing the
dishes, where the guests are seated around a big table with a quadratic cooking plate
in the centre. The cook prepares the fresh food, meat, fish or vegetables, directly in
front of the guests. So they can see the art of Tao while preparing the ingredients
and also get a good insight into Japanese cooking with all its sauces and special
preparations. Tao likes the direct contact with his guests on the table because it
allows him to ask how everybody likes their food to be prepared and at the same
time gives him the opportunity to comment and explain Japanese cooking.
For Sushi and Sashimi lovers, the restaurant offers a long list of classic Maki-rolls
as well as new, creative variations. Also you find a lot of fresh fish, directly out of
the Atlantic or freshly imported by plane from Madrid. Together with the essential
ingredients as Soya sauce, wasabi or ginger you can discover new tastes that does
not exist in the European cuisine. And we recommend everybody who is still sceptical
about sushi to try after a cooked plate a Mango Tango Roll, a Sesame Chicken Roll or
the original Sushi Pizza made by Tao. For sure a lot of people will be delighted by the
fine tastes and will try a different sushi on their next visit. For complete beginners in
the art of Japanese cuisine Tao offers some nicely prepared menus that are perfect
to try and discover new flavours.
Depending on the fresh produce that Tao can buy, you will also find some suggestions
of the day that show the creative side of Taos cooking. Spicy tuna tacos or Sushi with
Cherne are only some examples. When the nights are warm the restaurant has a
terrace with nice views over the harbour of Puerto del Carmen. And inside you find
Japanese elegancy, and either you can choose the communicative teppanyaki-table
or, if you like your dinner more intimate, one of the individual tables in the side
room.

s spectacular as the landscape of

Since 1981 the bodega El Chupadero

Hendriks has accomplished to change
step by step the old ruined house into

the big terrace in front of the bodega

Available now there are eight sailing
boats on Lanzarote and clients can

preferences. The boats are between
10,50 and 15,50 meter long and have
two, three, four or up to five cabins.
There are also additional boats available
throughout the Canary Islands.
A sailing excursion normally starts
on Saturday and lasts for a week, but
shorter excursions are also available.
You do not need a special permission for
the Canary Islands; a standard European
sailing permission is all you need. If you
like to you can charter the boat with a
skipper and enjoy the sun, the sea and
the breeze without the responsibility of
the boat and people.
Close to Lanzarote you will find Puerto
Calero, Playa Blanca, Arrecife, Caleta del
Sebo, and Corralejo, Castillo, Gran Tarajal
and Morro Jable on Fuerteventura a

the little neighbour island La Graciosa,

the idea to help to maintain this old and
traditional way of artistic craftsmanship

And although there are many hours
of work in the pieces of jewellery the
prices are comparative with the mass
production pieces, making them even
more attractive.
The personal aspect of art is very
important in Arte de Lava. Only pieces of
art that Giorgio recommends are offered
in his shop. And the list of products
reaches from paintings to jewellery to
morocco wood works up to little pieces
of art made of lava, the origin of the shops
name. The curiosity to learn something
new has led Giorgio into the history of
the original population of Lanzarote and
many of their historic symbols decorate
today stones and pieces of lava from
the island. In this way past and present
are combined. Everybody who spends
some time in the shop can learn a lot of
detail about each and every piece of art
by speaking with Giorgio.

Interesting insights in the life underwater
T
he Canary Islands are one of the regions in the world which offers perfect
conditions to study the different species of aquatic mammals. Many species
are living in the water around the islands; others are passing through during
the year. The existence of 27 different species is documented, which makes the

A unique underwater adventure
 
F
or anyone who has always wanted to see the
magnificent underwater world, here in Lanzarote
you will find the unique possibility to dive with a
submarine into the watery landscape of this volcanic island.
In the harbour of Puerto Calero, the modern submarine
Sub Fun Tres with its 48 seats offers a special experience.
 
Since 1997 the company Submarine Safari SL has taken
people on underwater excursions along the coast, starting
in the exclusive marina. If you drive down the road to the
harbour you will find the office on the left hand side, where
you can book your tour or buy some special souvenirs. This
is also the meeting point for all the passengers before
they start their journey into, for many totally unknown,
the underwater world of the island. Before starting the
trip, each group of passengers gets some special security
advice for the tour, similar to the security advice on planes,
which makes it clear that this excursion is not only another
leisure activity, but a high tech trip with a state of the art
submarine that can dive up to 60 metres.
Instead of security belts and emergency exits, the security
video explains the use of swimming vests and the oxygen
masks on board. Also you will be told that the 3.5 million
dollar and 106 ton submarine is technically equipped with
everything that the passengers need to feel totally safe
and secure. Inside the submarine a system automatically
regulates the air pressure, so that it is safe even for

pregnant women or people with heart
or respiratory difficulties to enjoy the
tour. Children under two years of age
cannot be allowed because of health
security reasons.
 
After seeing the informative video, the
passengers walk along a promenade
to the Sub Fun Tres. Once you see the
bright yellow submarine, 18 metres
long and 4 metres wide, you will know
for sure that this excursion will be a
real underwater adventure. Before
entering the submarine, some photos
will be taken and then the trip into the
waters between Puerto Calero and Playa
Quemada begins. In addition to the 80
centimetre porthole for each passenger,
which allows you to take photos of
the world that is in the sea, everybody
has a monitor that gives continuous
information about the depth and the
direction of the sub. You can also see on
the monitor how the boat dives into the
Atlantic Ocean.
 
Once you are under the sea, you
will see the first inquisitive fish pass
by the window. On board a guide
gives information in three languages
explaining the variety of fish that there is
to see, and there is a lot to see: the whole
spectrum of the local underwater fauna
from cherne to mero, vieja to barracudas.
With a bit of luck you may see a manta
ray or a ball fish - but you have to watch
the sea bed very closely to see these. The
excursion passes the harbour, a sunken
boat and then goes down to a 35 metre
deep spot where a diver feeds the fish
in front of the passengers windows, the
variety that you can see is amazing.
 
After a little rest under the sea, the boat
turns and goes back to the harbour so
that you can see all the interesting things
on this wonderful journey from the other
side of the boat. Before reaching the
harbour, the classic Beatles tune “Yellow
submarine” is played inviting you to sing
along. After 60 minutes the Sub Fun Tres
reaches Puerto Calero again and the
passengers can get their dive certificates
from the tour office. There you can also
find the photos taken at the beginning
of the trip.
 
The submarine excursions go several
times a day and it is recommended that
you book at least one day in advance.
A special shuttle bus connects Puerto
Calero with the main tourist areas of
Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and
Playa Blanca.

or six years now Lina Rademacher
runs a small smoked fish shop in
Macher, and from a modest start
with a small smoking chamber her
shop has developed a new direction in
smoked fish on the island. Every week
nearly 600 kilo of smoked salmon are
prepared here and among the clients
are nearly all of the five star hotels of
the island, some of the best restaurants

The fresh salmon comes up to three
times a week by plane from Norway
and then gets prepared on the island.
Linas family originate from Paris and
for three generations smoking fish is
their business. Many recipes and the
homemade way of preparation, have
been passed on from generation to
generation.

The preparation process to get the fish
into a perfectly smoked condition lasts
up to 48 hours. First the fish is cleaned,
then the fish bones are picked out one
by one with tweezers, then it rests in a
special marinade and later gets smoked
in the special oven exactly as long
as it takes to give it this special taste,
that makes the salmon from Macher
so unique. „For us quality is the most
important“, tells Lina Rademacher. “We
are happy about every client who visits
us, but even more about the clients who
come back again and again, because
they are convinced of our product.”

Bodega El Grifo
The most ancient bodega in Canarias
F
ounded in 1775 El Grifo is the oldest bodega of the Canary Islands, family run
for five generations, which still runs to this day. It is situated in the centre of the

F
or over 20 years now artist Carlos
Parra has lived and worked on
Lanzarote. His old ateliers in
La Geria and Maguez, which always
had the doors open for visitors, are
still a good memory for residents
and tourists alike. For six years he
has been running his own space in
Teguise, where he offers his paintings
and jewellery, a perfect place to get
to know the art and the artist.
The big passion of Carlos Parra is his
painting, and even when he diverts
to other disciplines of art, painting is
always the main base. His early fish
motives are decorating a lot of houses
on the island and mainland Spain and
through the years his paintings have
become more and more influenced
by the island. Carlos prefers a natural
basis for his works as oil paintings and
natural pigments from different parts
of the world.
“Its important for me to hear what
people see in my pictures, that is
often the basis for very interesting
conversations,“ tells Carlos. His
paintings have been exposed on all
Canarian Islands, on mainland Spain
as well as in other European countries.
Some galleries in big European cities
have paintings from Carlos Parra in
their exhibitions. To get more creative
input Carlos likes to travel to countries
such as India, Tibet or Africa where he

gets to explore new cultures and find
new natural colour pigments for his
work.
Along with to his painting Carlos Parra
has always used other forms to express
his creativity, such as clay pottery or
painting clothes. For years now the
design of jewellery is a fixed part of his
work and he designs high quality gold,
silver and copper jewellery as well
as pieces with semiprecious stones
or colourful necklaces of different
materials.

The use of the different slides is regulated
by height (1.2 m or bigger) and one of
the most important conditions for using
them is the ability to swim. More than
15 life guards make the pools and the
whole area safe so that everyone can
enjoy the water paradise. In case of any
accidents, there is a resident doctor. For
tourists who are staying in Puerto del
Carmen or Playa Blanca, Aquapark offers

W
hen you take a look at the markets and shops in the touristy areas it is
easy to come to the conclusion that all the articles and souvenirs are
made in China. Authentic traditional art and handicraft of the Canary
Islands is hard to find and only people who know the island know how to find
shops like Tágora in Macher.
It is easy to see that Beatriz and Alejandro, the owner of Tágora, have a special
interest in Canarian art and handicraft. In their big shop on the street between
Macher and Puerto del Carmen they offer art and craftsmanship not only from
Lanzarote but also chosen pieces of other Canary Islands. To achieve that they
regularly visit the fairs for art and craftsmanship on all the islands and they
always try to get in contact with the artists. Because as in all the cultures also the
traditional pieces of the Canaries have their meaning and history. And you can
learn a lot about that in the shop Tágora.
If you look around in the shop you will find a wide spread offer. Pottery, olivinejewellery, rugs, wine, cigars, T-Shirts, decorative miniature balconies, traditional
filters for water or decorative working tools of the island are on sale and to each

the articles is like doing a little journey
through time and history through all
of the seven islands. And you notice
directly that Beatriz knows all the
artists personally and that she always
tries to maintain the old tradition of
handicraft.
“Many of the artists have the problem
that their prices can not compete with
mass production. But many of the
pieces that they produce, like old water
cans made of clay or baskets made of
palm leaves, are important parts of the
islands history. In my opinion these old
techniques have to be maintained and
with my shop I try to offer a place of
sale to all the artists” tells Beatriz.

The art of German bakery

erman bakery products are very
popular in Lanzarote and more
and more residents and visitors
like the many different kinds of bread,
pastry and the delicious and decorative
cakes. In Tahiche you will find El Pastelito,
one of the best places to try all these
delicacies.
Matthias Geissler and Sindy Wendt
started to run the big bakery five years
ago close to the Fundación César
Manrique and quickly impressed their
clients with their products. From typical
German bread rolls or pastries to cakes in
different sizes and different ingredients.
The local population love the art of
German bakery and more and more

The situation of the bakery with its big
cafeteria right in the middle of the island
makes it the perfect place for a meal
during an excursion, or to buy some food
for the day. During the morning you will
find a lot of people having breakfast in
El Pastelito and around midday the well
prepared filled bread rolls or pastries
such as “Berliner” or “Raisin snails” are
very popular. Throughout the years
they have introduced typical pastries
of the island and now you can find in
El Pastelito a broad mixture of delicious
bakery products.
One of the most popular products in the
shop are the small cakes that people like
for their afternoon tea break. You find
them with fruits, cheese, chocolate or
other specialties and these small cakes
are a real temptation to try and enjoy.

big cakes in El Pastelito for weddings,
birthdays or other special occasions.

70 per cent of their clients are local
Spanish people.

Fundación Cesar Manrique, if you are on
your way to Mirador del Rio, Jameos del
Agua or Cueva de los Verdes, if you make
a tour to the north of the island or visit
the big Sunday market in Teguise, all

El Pastelito in Tahiche. Head north on the
big roundabout of Tahiche and after 100
metres you will see the big cafeteria on
the right. A visit is always recommended
and once you try the art of German

Enjoying away from mass-tourism
I
f you leave the three big touristy centres of the island it is very easy possible to
discover the original Lanzarote, small villages with idyllic tranquillity and a special

runs the nice Gastropup Lilium,
first in Tías and now in Arrecife. The
well done mixture of bar and restaurant,
where you can try the delicious Canarian
cuisine in a special atmosphere,

Orlando, who worked for some time in
the restaurant El Bulli of Ferran Adria,
recognized over several years as the
best cook in the world, fulfilled himself
with the opening of the Gastropup
Lilium a personal initiative: a mixture of
a comfortable bar where you can have
a nice dinner, and a first class restaurant
with a special atmosphere. And right
from the beginning after entering Lilium
you notice the little difference and a lot
of small details show the perfection and
creativity of Orlando.
Very special is for example the well
chosen and exquisite selection of wine,
which is not offered as usual in a list,
but in a special exhibition area where
you can see everything on offer. For
the open bottle wines on offer exists
a special nitrogen-station, which
maintains perfectly the taste and texture
of each wine. Apart from the menu you
will find in Lilium a list of daily fresh
specialities that are listed on a special
board together with the prices. And in
the menu you find a creative Canarian
cuisine full of surprises.
Croquettes made of gofio or banana
are a perfect company for a beer on
the bar and only one example for the
original snacks you can find here. If you
chose a table in the restaurant area you
can decide between different starters,
salads, fresh fish or meat dishes, that
are all made with the freshest Canarian
produce available and that surprise
with their interesting and original
way of preparation. In search for new
flavours Orlando started offering blindfolded tasting events, where the guests
get the opportunity to taste different
plates without seeing them so that they
can concentrate on the different new
flavours. Cooperation with some of the
bodegas of the island completes the
culinary offer.
In some special cupboards of the Lilium
you will find culinary delicacies that
normally are very difficult to find on
the island. Orlando likes to speak about
recipes and ways of cooking and often he
gets into conversations with his clients

Catlanza    Take a catamaran to the nicest beaches
 
O
ne of the best ideas for a perfect day out is to have an excursion, out to
sea, on a sailing boat. That way you can see the island from a very different
and interesting perspective and enjoy swimming, sunbathing and a lot
of sporting activities. Catlanza makes that dream come true with their exclusive
catamaran excursions.
 
The catamaran experience starts with transport from your hotel, which makes it
very easy for everybody to join in. Once you set foot on this impressive craft, some
photos will be taken that you can purchase after your trip. Then follows the technical
instruction: in order to get the craft out of the harbour, everybody has to stay in their
seats for the first ten minutes of the tour, after that the whole boat is free to roam.
So while the crew steers the boat out of the harbour, the passengers stay in the bar
area and get information about the programme of the day.
 
Once the information is given, the passengers start to look for the best places to
relax, the net area between the two parts of the catamaran is especially popular. The

U
na empresa que lleva su nombre como lema. Desde hace más de 12 años
Mega Fun Quad ofrece excursiones en buggies y quads por los paisajes únicos de Lanzarote y llevan los excursionistas a regiones donde normalmente

Las peculiares excursiones comienzan en Puerto del Carmen y llevan a los
excursionistas conductores a San Bartolomé y las dunas de arena cercanas a Famara.
Después de una pausa de retorno recorre la región del vino de La Geria. Prácticamente
todo el que tenga carnet de conducir puede disfrutar de las excursiones y circular
con buggies es bastante fácil. Los pequeños y abiertos vehículos se encuentran en
perfecto estado tienen un motor automático y aunque se conducen como coches,
no hace falta cambiar las marchas. Los quads, una variación de una moto con cuatro
ruedas, necesitan un poco más de técnica, pero también son muy fáciles de conducir.
Para los propietarios alemanes es muy importante aclarar que las excursiones
no son ralleys y que es muy importante que el grupo se mantenga unido. Con
una velocidad de 40 a 50 kilómetros por hora el convoy circula alrededor de 80
kilómetros sobre pistas aisladas que llevan a todos a paisajes singulares de la isla. El
80 % del recorrido de la excursión, los vehículos circulan por pistas que no son aptas

para otros vehículos. Especialmente en
las dunas de arena cerca de Famara los
vehículos Offroad demuestran su fuerza
y la carrera por la arena ofrece una nueva
experiencia al de conducir.
Las rutas están reconocidas por las
instituciones y un guía se ocupa
durante la excursión de la seguridad
de los conductores. Muy interesante es
que la edad media de los aficionados
a los buggies es de 40 años, mucho
más alto de lo que muchos creían.
También familias y personas mayores,
que no alquilarían solos para ellos
un jeep, aprovechan la oportunidad
para conocer Lanzarote desde un lado
diferente. La edad mínima para los niños
es de 7 años.
Para garantizar la seguridad de todos
los vehículos se revisan y limpian a
diario y por supuesto están asegurados
contra accidentes. Es importante utilizar

seguridad y confort, porque conducir

Many tourists and residents are always on the search for a place to enjoy a drink, a

the newly opened restaurant Hoyo 19 at the golf course between Tías and Puerto
