Ports of Call
MYKONOS, GREECE
Wander through the winding streets of this lovely seaside village.
Discover a kaleidoscope of whitewashed houses, flowers, and
brightly painted shutters and doors. Stand beneath the windmills
on the hill, take in the fascinating Archaeological Museum, or visit
an old bakery still using a 15th-century wood-burning stove.
EPHESUS (KUSADASI), TURKEY
Explore the ruins of ancient Ephesus: the famed Library of Celsus,
the huge amphitheater, chariot-marked marble roads, amazing
mosaic sidewalks, and the superb, rarely opened Terrace Houses.
Or journey to Priene, Miletus, and Didyma, three monumental
cities of antiquity renowned for their majestic temples and
impressive, beautifully preserved stadiums.
SINOP, TURKEY
Turkey’s northernmost city, Sinop sits on the neck of a peninsula
on the Black Sea. See the ancient ruins of the Temple of Serapis
and the citadel and wall on the seaside that have protected the city
since the 7th century B.C. Other attractions include the 13thcentury Aladdin Mosque and the Byzantine-period Balatlar Church
in the city’s Ada Quarter.
TRABZON, TURKEY
Trabzon is located in a beautiful setting on the Black Sea, backed
by the steep Pontic Mountains and blessed with dense forests and
subtropical flowers that blanket the countryside. Take in the many
historical buildings in town, such as the Hagia Sophia and Saint
Eugene churches. See the nearby Sumela Monastery, a stunning
religious site, which dates to the 6th century.
SOCHI, RUSSIA
Enjoy a stroll along the seafront promenade and admire the lovely
botanical gardens, the pretty Riviera Park with its statues and
pools, and the palatial Matsesta Spa, renowned for its healing
waters and adjacent to Stalinís dacha. Head into the countryside
and visit a local tea plantation and be treated to some traditional
Russian song and dance while you sip tea and eat homemade
pie. Selected as the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics, the port is
buzzing with preparations.
YALTA, UKRAINE
Spend the day touring the beautiful Crimean countryside. See
the elegant summer palaces of Alexander III and envision how
the Russian elite once lived. Visit Livadia Palace, summer retreat
of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, and site of the 1945 Yalta
Conference. Admire the view of the romantic Swallow’s Nest
Castle and visit the Massandra Winery.
SEVASTOPOL, UKRAINE
Enjoy a drive through this historic town and see its ancient Greek
walls and theater, or explore its more contemporary history with a
visit to a Crimean War battlefield. Admire its lovely architectural
monuments and visit the fascinating Historical and Archaeological
Museum. Or take in Balaklava, a former Crimean city captured
without bloodshed by the British in 1854.
ODESSA, UKRAINE
Experience centuries of history as you walk through this lovely
city. See the famed Potemkin Steps rising from the waterfront,
the stunning five-domed Uspenski Cathedral, and Shevchenko
Park with its views of the Black Sea and remnants of Catherine the
Great’s Odessa fortress.
CONSTANTA, ROMANIA
Located along the Black Sea coastline, Constanta features the
marvelous ruins of ancient Histria, which began as a Greek colony
and ended as a Byzantine outpost. Enjoy Constanta’s Roman
relics and archaeological and folk museums.

treasures on a walk through the old quarter past historic churches,
and visit the museum with its wonderful collection of icons. Head
