“Ooh-la-la” was the constant
comment of this gregarious group
who traveled for 12 days through spectacular France (featuring sunny weather,
fabulous foods, enviable shopping and
a super cruise ship). After a scary start
from that volcano, most arrived early
for three glorious days amidst the cherry
blossoms and spring everywhere. After
delightful D’orsay Museum (some to the
Louvre) many migrated to Notre Dame.
Champs-Elysees, or park strolling. Lucky
ones invaded Louis Vuitton or Galaries
Lafayette for shopping.
Boarding our Baroness River Cruise
Ship, we sailed away amidst many camera
shots and some bugling from tour leader
Mim. Touring Les Andelevs castle and
enchanting Rouen where next. Then
on the famous Normandy Beaches. US
cemetery and most memorable day for
all. Popular impressionist-painted town
of Honfleur attracted us next until we
gloried in Giverny–the home of the most
famous Claude Monet whose landscaping
and blooming flowers were breathtaking.
Cameras almost exploded! From there,
magnificent Palace of Versailles and near
tears as we sailed back for last of Paree.
Most fun farewells were had by those dining at the Eiffel Tower or several wowed
by the Lido de Paris show. Magical
memories were made of our Seine cruising and Parisian excitement. Voila!

HHPOA Announces Summer Concert Date

attend the Huntington Harbour Property
Owner’s Association Concert in the Park
on Sunday, August 15, 2010 at 4:30 p.m.
The HHPOA Board Member’s invite all
Harbour residents, friends and family
members to the free concert in the beautiful Harbour View Park on Saybrook
Lane. This will be the 6th Annual
HHPOA Concert in the Park, and
promises to be another fun, neighborly,
music-filled social event for Huntington
Harbourites.
Community events, like this
open-air concert, are a segment of the
HHPOA Board’s continuous campaign
toward improving the quality of life
in the area. Ongoing maintenance
and landscaping projects are also a
large portion of the HHPOA’s work to
beautify Huntington Harbour. The association can only move forward by resident
membership participation, as well as
yearly membership renewal. Membership
dues are just seventy-five dollars a year,
and the benefits go directly back into
the many Huntington Harbour neighborhoods under the direction of the
association.

Bolsa Chica Conservancy

An exciting new educational and
public outreach program is starting in late
spring at the Bolsa Chica Conservancy,
named Eye On Nest-sites (EONS). In collaboration with the California Department
of Fish and Game (DFG) and the California
Department of Parks and Recreation, this
new program will focus on the nesting
success of the endangered California least
tern and threatened Western Snowy Plover
colonies at the Bolsa Chica Ecological
Reserve. It is designed to be an immersive
program that engages the public to learn
more about nesting birds and the wildlife
at Bolsa Chica.
As these species are under protection,
Bolsa Chica offers a unique opportunity
for interested students and the general
public to get up-close and observe these
birds during their summer breeding season. Observations will be taking place at
Nest Site 1, which can be viewed at the
end of the boardwalk located at the South
Lot. Trained naturalists will be available to
provide information to the visiting public,
while the public participates in recording
observations of nesting birds and any
wildlife activity. In particular, species
identification, number of eggs, hatchlings
and adults will be recorded as well as other
birds and possible predators. But, this
program is more than just about birds! It
is designed to teach field data collection
methods, learn identification of birds and
their predators, statistical data analysis, and
to get a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes
activities at the reserve – a true experience!
Data collected from the observations will
be recorded in a web-based program that
can be viewed by students and researchers
from around the world.
EONS Guides will be trained to work
with the visiting public and volunteers
to specific nest sites and conduct on-site
monitoring of these species. A training
session was recently conducted at the
Interpretive Center with fifteen volunteers.
Volunteers will rotate in shifts from 6 a.m.
to 6 p.m. to monitor the Nest Site 1, which
is located at the end of the boardwalk from
the south lot. More training sessions will
be conducted in July to allow more volunteers to participate. If you are familiar with
birding and the Bolsa Chica Wetlands, you
may apply as an EONS Guide. Students
are encouraged to apply for school credit as
well! If you are interested in applying as an
EONS Guide, please contact Kati Patonai,
Program Coordinator at Kati@bolsachica.
org or at 714.846.1114.
This program will run in conjunction
with the ongoing surveys conducted by
the Department of Fish and Game. The
extended survey hours will help acquire
much needed data to better understand
why these populations are failing to
recover. Additionally, this activity will
gather comparable data with other regions

We hope to increase our knowledge by
collecting relevant biological field data to
better understand the needs, challenges
and threats to these species, and to raise
public awareness of the importance of such
nesting grounds and wetland habitats.
To help fund the Bolsa Chica
Conservancy’s education and habitat
programs like EONS, Fred’s Mexican Café
on Main and PCH is hosting a fundraising
brunch on July 4th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

proceeds will benefit the education and

We find ourselves very fortunate
during these hard economic times gaining strength in both membership and
purpose. Based on how the economy
has forced diminished membership in
Country Clubs as well as Yacht Clubs
throughout the country, we had set our
sights lower for this season only to find
our membership increasing with predominantly younger people. Just this last
month 19 new people now call HHYC
their new Yacht Club, Welcome!
Our First Mate Boating seminar
was a huge success and will be the seed
event for future boating classes which
will include boat handling, Mexico cruising, Boat safety and much more. I would
again, like to thank our 20+ instructors
(all members) that worked so hard teaching the seven courses. It was a long day
for them but I know they took much
pride at graduation that night watching
the students receive their first boating
diplomas.
Our Huntington Beach Sailing
Foundation (a 501 c3) has so far received
a significant amount of donations
that have far exceeded or expectations
from all over the Harbour through our
fundraisers. A special thanks to Lloyd
and Colleen Clauss, Tom Golden, Janet
Honaker and the many volunteers that
put on the Cinco de Mayo party and
Sailing foundation Fundraiser. A special
thanks to the energetic Huntington
Harbour Rod & Reel club that worked
so unselfishly for the Kids sailing cause,
they are truly a class act and great friends
of our club.
Coming June 5th Dog Day
Afternoon our first dog show open to the
public enter your dog and win big! Yacht
dog of the year, best legs, best smile,
highest jumper just to name a few.
Our coming cruises include our
May 20 – 23 to the Isthmus then over to
Avalon for dinner at the famed Catalina
Island Yacht Club, followed by a Dingy
Parade and miniature golf tournament.
This is just the beginning we have many
more cruises to the Island and up and
down the coast. Come join us!
Our Sunday brunch the first three
Sundays of the month have, and will
continue to be a great way to introduce
new members to our club. Don’t forget
we have NEW bar hours for Sundays
from 4PM to 8PM many of you are
cruising around in your Duff y’s so drop
in and say hello.

famous Bauer Pottery from the museum
collection and spoke about the history of
this ceramic collection.
The Fine Arts Exhibition and
Competition was held at the Artists
Corner Gallery in the Central Library
with over 50 entries. Among the 20 awards
given were: Best of Show to T.J. Cooling
for her mixed media painting, “Toucan
Forest”. Viewer’s Choice was awarded to
Betty Viers for her watercolor “The Cove”.
First Place in oils and also in watercolor
went to Genny Murawski. Kathleen
Moore won first place in photography for
“Acorn Detail—Watts Tower”. Marianne
Tomson won first place in Sculpture for
“Asia”. Francine Holthaus won fist place
in pastel for “The Wolf”. Joan Ruh and
Pat McKenna provided a delicious champagne reception. The judge was Roland
Haas of Coastline Community College.
Needles and Friends members held
a workshop at Marsha Hendler’s home. It was taught by Barbara Thorne. The
Friends brought their sewing machines to
Marsha’s home and were delighted with
the colorful quilt piece produced at the
Jewelry workshop: Pam Smart, Leslie Benjamini, Marsha Hendler, Joan Ruh, Kathleen Moore, Jeanne
Sprague.

to the Fiber Arts Show this fall. Pat
McKenna and Pam Smart will chair the
show held in a lovely waterfront home
with over 50 items entered for competition and sale. Members will work on a
raffle quality the proceeds of which will
be donated to the scholarship fund. There
will also be a sale of handmade Christmas
tree ornaments, the proceeds will be given
to charity.
Painting Pals continues to meet
each Tuesday at the Seagate Yacht Club
from 10-12. Members paint and lunch

The Huntington Harbour Republican
Women, Federated held a candidate forum
at Meadowlark Country Club for their
April 28th meeting. All Republicans that
will be listed on the June 8th primary
ballot were invited. The event was such
a huge success that the club has set a the
next candidate forum for September 24th,
a Friday evening to allow an even larger
attendance. The RWF is the educational
arm for the Republican Party. The
Huntington Harbour Club has the largest
membership in the Women’s Federation
for the United States. The HHRWF club sponsors high
school students to a trip to Sacramento each
year to participate in the Youth Advocacy
Program. The students meet with their
local elected officials at their offices in the
State Capital Building as well as receiving
a tour of the Senate and Assembly Floor.
The club holds fundraisers through
the year to raise the monies to pay for these
students expenses. Upcoming event is
The Huntington Beach Library, on Friday,
July 23rd to attend the musical Annie.

Each year the club has a float in the
Huntington Beach July 4th Parade. The
float has placed 2nd in judging for the last
two years. The club meets on the fourth
Wednesday of each month at Meadowlark
Country Club. There are no meetings during the months of June and July. We always
welcome new members.
The Ross Family Foundation, based
here in Huntington Harbour, continues
to make a difference in the lives of others.
RFF was a major sponsor for the recent
Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Committee Junior’s fashion show A Trip
to the Orient. Members were there at the
Waterfront Hilton to show their support
for the juniors, and for RFF member
Allison Andrews, who put the wonderful
fashion show together!

The evening of March 26th nearly
50 Anglers of Huntington Harbour and
guests gathered at the Humboldt Island
waterfront home of Nick and Karen
Peoples for their March TGIF. Each of
the Anglers brought one of their favorite
appetizers or desserts to be enjoyed by all
as they socialized and talked about some
of the fun fishing and social activities
scheduled during the next few months.

Friday evening April 30th nearly 60
Anglers of Huntington Harbour and guests
met at the Trinidad Island waterfront
home of Lou and Sue Earlabaugh for the
group’s April TGIF. The Anglers brought
appetizers and desserts that everyone
enjoyed as they socialized and lined up
mentors for the upcoming “Kids Fishing
Trip”, cooks for the annual Fish Fry and
boats and fishermen for the Long Beach
Challenge tournament. Those attending

enjoyable Sunday afternoon at the Long
Beach Carpenter Performing Art Center
where they joined Excursion Chairperson,
Pearl Holmes in attending the musical
“The Marvelous Wonderettes.” It was a
wonderful light-hearted show with songs
from the 50’s and 60’s.
FINS Daytime Gourmet members
enjoyed a Spring Luncheon at the home of
Mary Johnson in April. Her co-hostess,
Mary Berge, who was the shopper of
the day for the menu drove down from
Pescadero, CA. a day early to help Mary

luncheon started with a delicious Spinach
Artichoke Three-cheese dip prepared
by the hostess followed by the Papaya

Galinas. A wonderful Beef Tenderloin
with Port Wine-Red Currant Reduction
was the main entrée of the day along with
a smashed Yukon Gold Potatoes with
Parsnips and Garlic Roasted Asparagus
that the hostess herself cooked outside on
the barbecue.

Poke Cake that Betty McCarthy cooked
Assistance League of Huntington Beach

For those of you who were able to
attend our April 17th fundraiser at the
Hyatt, thank you! It was a wonderful
day and we netted $115,000 and had 550
guests. The proceeds from our fundraiser
go to help our community programs
which give to children and adults in need.
Our service areas are Huntington Beach,
Fountain Valley, and Westminster. Our
biggest program is called Operation
School Bell which is our longest running
program for school children. We started
clothing school children at a Target
store in Huntington Beach this year and
were able to help at least 1,200 children
between September and January. We
also were able to help clothe some of the
homeless high school students in the local
community.
Membership update: This year we
have 60 new members! That is a record
and we are so grateful to have so many
enthusiastic members that want to give
back to the community by volunteering in
our thrift shop and helping with our philanthropic programs. Our group is now
over 200 members! If you are interested
in becoming a volunteer member, please
contact Susan Morton at (714)847-2030.
If you have a high school student who
would like to volunteer in the upcoming
school year as an Assisteen please contact
Cindy Robertson at (714) 960-1324 for
more information. The Assisteens are
a coed group of about 85 students who
earn their community service high school
credit hours by volunteering at our thrift
shop and other local volunteer projects
such as the OC Food Bank.

Flying Dutchman Enjoys Evening at
Pelican Point
Flying Dutchman, a chapter of the
Guilds of the Orange County Performing
Arts Center, enjoyed a lovely dinner evening last month at the home of Bobbitt
and Bill Williams, members who reside
in a lovely beachfront home at Pelican
Point. Close to fifty members were there
for a delicious dinner catered by Susanne’s
Catering. The evening’s highlight was the
announcement of new officers for the coming year.
Named as co-presidents were Mary
and Jim Thompson. Also taking returning
positions next year are Jan and Joe Goss,
secretary, and Frieda and Bob Koester
as treasurers. The next event will see the
installation of a full contingent of officers
and committee chairs as the group meets
Newport Beach’s Daily Grill for brunch on
an upcoming Sunday in June.

Huntington Harbour Garden Club
held a St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon for their March meeting at the home of Connie
Mandic. All the members and guests went
home with a pot of shamrocks, courtesy
of Connie. Co-hostesses of the day were
Sherry Bullock and Irene Cooper. Connie
had prepared a luncheon of corned beef
and cabbage and boiled potatoes and Irish
Bread. Her assistants, Sherry and Irene
provided the salads and desserts. We
really celebrated St.Patrick’s Day in style. Our Floral Design Speaker of the day was
Janelle Wiley from Sherman Gardens. Ms
Wiley prepared a Spring Floral Basket
using oasis. She placed the oasis in the
basket one-inch taller that the basket and
taped it to the basket. She placed a tree
branch in the center of the basket (can
buy one from a florist if you don’t have
one) then inserted chocolate peppermint,
hybrid blue Delphiniums, Bells of Ireland,
small blue, pink and white anemones and
pink tulips, yellow gerbera daisies, and
pink cherio roses. She finished off the
basket by inserting white lacy flowers
into the oasis all around the basket so
the flowers will drape over the basket. She suggested using pencil chopsticks to
insert the plants into the oasis. The basket
needs to be watered every two days and
suggested mixing Seven- up and a small
amount of bleach and spray the basket a
few times a week with the mixture.
It was announced at the meeting
that three members of the HHGC won
awards at Huntington Harbour Art
Association Show at the HB Library in
March—Wynne Hayes, Pam Smart &
Kay Sullivan.
The March 2010 Garden of the
Month Award was presented to the garden
of Michael & Suzanne Moulton, 16971
Edgewater Lane (Mainland). A brilliant
splash of color takes the eye of passersby here. Mainly yellow ranunculus and
anemones are massed in planter beds on
either side of the driveway. The color
continues through the courtyard with
lush tropical planting, a wide area leading
to the front door. Mature king palms and
lava rock boulders give a Hawaiian touch.
The April meeting of the HHGC
was held at the home of President, Mary
Johnson who surprised members with a
tasty luncheon in her beautiful succulent
backyard. Members who supplied dessert
were Barbara Devlin and Barbara Simone.
Stu Span, a Rosarian, from Rogers
Garden spoke on choosing and the care
of roses in the yard. He said the most
popular rose is a hybrid with long stems
with a single rose on the end, followed
by floribunda roses for a border and
Grandflora. He suggested that buyers
of roses should go to several nurseries
and see what is available before buying
a rose bush. Red roses that are fragrant
tend to mildew, yellow roses flower a lot
but don’t last long and fall apart easily
and lavender roses usually have fragrance.
Very few white roses have fragrance but he
mentioned two that are fragrant, Queen
Mary II and Pope John II.
He suggested when planting roses
keep them away from trees—5 feet
from the drop line of trees. He really
recommends growing roses in pots—the
bigger the pot the bigger the roses will get. Plastic pots will hold moisture better than

clay pots and it is easier to move roses in
plastic pots. Use planting mix in the soil,
not potting mix, work it 6 inches into the
ground, breaking up clay to hold moisture. Rose roots go down 17 inches and
then spread out. Plant 3 feet apart and
you will have less trouble with mildew &
insects and keep away from walls if possible (except climbing roses), Roses like
the sun but they are not tropical plants; they like the change of seasons and need
5 hours of sun a day and morning sun is
better than afternoon sun. It’s good to
hose down the leaves of roses to knock
of pests. Roses should be fertilized every
month.
The April HHGC Garden of the
Month Award was given to Davenport
Drive at Algonquin for the Huntington
Harbour Property Owner’s Association
which does an impressive job of beautifying the Harbour area. HHGC wanted to
recognize their considerable efforts, led by
Dorothy Ralphs, specially the beautiful
and cheerful display on Davenport Drive
at Algonquin. The Association changes
the display seasonally and the area is
always an eye-taking welcome to the
Harbour.
Huntington Harbour Garden Club is
open to all residents of the Harbour. The

SYC members traveled to Pala Resort & Casino for a weekend of fun, food and gambling on March 20-21
Opening Day
“It is now my great pleasure and
duty to declare the 2010 yachting season
of SeaGate Yacht Club, our 34th year,
officially open!” announced Commodore
John Humphreys. With that, the SeaGate
Yacht Club Opening Day ceremony
ended, capping a great afternoon of
boating and camaraderie. Earlier that
afternoon, twenty-three boats, dressed
in celebration flags, lined up to parade
around Huntington Harbour letting all of
our neighbors know that it was time for the
opening.
The Opening Day festivities were
attended by over 120 members and guests
including Staff Commodore John Byerlin
and Myrenna from Oasis Yacht Club in
Newport Beach and Commodore Lloyd
Claus and Colleen from Huntington
Harbour Yacht Club. Recognized by eight
tolls, were members that passed away in the
past year, Linda Mitchell and Dick Naulty.
Flag officers hoisted their flags to the sound
of the booming (sort of) cannon. The
clubhouse was beautifully decorated for
our celebration dinner.Fun was had by all.
It was a great opening to the yachting year.
Pala Resort & Casino Weekend
Enthusiastic Seagate Yacht Club
members traveled to Pala Resort & Casino
for a weekend of fun, food and gambling
on March 20-21. The group traveled by bus
to the Pala resort where they were met with
a reception party by the hotel.
After an afternoon of relaxing the
group participated in a cocktail party
and an exciting slot machine tournament
which included prizes. This activity was
followed by a special private dinner. The
next morning brought swimming, basketball viewing in private cabanas before the
bus ride home. This was the second year for
this popular event.

Corinthian prepare a surprise dessert.
Our hospitality committee, Lucille
Mascoli, Carolyn Platt, and Cathy Kelly,
livened up the atmosphere with a tropical
floral table décor, as a preview of the Luau
Fun(d) Raiser. At the end of the luncheon
members enthusiastically recommitted
themselves to work together on the best
Luau ever seen in Huntington Harbour.
Our successful year has been highlighted by the progress on the Edinger
Parkway. The roadside is just about ready
for over 9,100 plants and trees, which
will make a magnificent drive toward the
1,000 homes along Edinger. The SIGC
has the community to thank for contibuting close to $200,000 over the last seven
years. The most recent event was the Luau
Fun(d) Raiser on May 21st, which showed
how Sea Isle made fund raising fun. There
were so many people who were willing to
underwrite the costs. Extra special thanks
go to Churee Kakimoto, Lauren Scott and
Star Real Estate for their sponsorship of
the fabulous Polynesian food provided by
Teak Productions. Their Ribs, pineapple
Chicken, rice, tasty pupus and Bananas
flambe were so beautifully presented. A
very special thanks also goes to Beverly
Allen for her very generous donation. The
evening ended with a rousing polynesian
show, four beautiful girls and six little
dancers (children about 6 and 7 years old)
who thrilled the crowd with their hula
dancing.
Sea Isle Garden Club has continued
to explore and apply for other sources of
funds to help with this project, such as
the Project Achievement Award, which
will be decided by the Huntington Beach
Environmental Board. The City is looking at projects which have an impact on
conserving our natural resources. Our
Edinger project has a solar-powered irrigation system and drought resistant plants,
which qualifies it for consideration.
Our club is always welcoming new
members, and we have so much fun at our
monthly meetings. In April, our program
was presented by hostess Dorothy Ralphs,
who demonstrated how clay pots can be
decorated for any special occasion.

Little Mermaid Guild

Little Mermaids is one of seven guilds
that raises money for Childrens Hospital
of Orange County. In April, several of
the Little Mermaids and their husbands
volunteered at the Long Beach Grand Prix
Foundation Golf Tournament held at Old
Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach. The
Foundation generously donates $25,000
each year to Children’s Hospital of Orange
County. The golf tournament was another
huge success. The tournament built on the
competition and fanfare surrounding the
Long Beach Grand Prix race. The race
annually attracts crowds during the week
in excess of 175,000. The golf tournament also included prizes and a silent

Our community is so giving, and we
definitely have a need right here in our
own backyard. Now...we are collecting
school supplies. Notebooks, pencils,
rulers, paper, glue sticks, binders...all are
welcome.
Parvaneh and Patrick Carter’s
little boy received $500 in gift cards and
money for his birthday party, and wanted
to donate it to the homeless children.

Our April meeting was held at the
beautiful waterfront home of Mary and
Jim Thompson.
Jack Hayden, our long time treasurer, had a massive heart attack and is
recuperating at Manor Care in Fountain
Valley. We all miss him and hope he
gets better and home real soon. Lesley
Herbold reported on the Vail trip in
February 2011. We have quite a few
people signed up and are looking forward
to a great ski season. The Mammoth trip
was filled with fun and snow. The next
and last meeting for the year will be held
at Boris and Dorothy Ralphs.
After our meeting, we were served
a delicious bar-b-que dinner by Smokin
Mo’s in Huntington Beach. Dorothy
Ralphs was in charge and everybody
pigged out on spare ribs and chicken and
the fi xins. YUM!
During the summer we will have a
duff y boat cruise party stopping for cocktails and appetizers at member homes and
then ending at Pelican Point for dinner.

Fundraiser for Orangewood Children as
Mim Strickler’s party patio was almost
transformed into an Irish pub. Scott
Strickler’s “Full Sail” band and Sueannah
Nicholas’ guitar entertaining set a lively
beat for the group. Lucky John Martin
won the 50-50 monies collected by
Janice Belk and Jackie Parker. Special
thanks to bartenders Anita Osgood and

April meeting at the beautiful home of
Lucille Mascoli. We want to thank Lucille
for opening up her home for our meeting
and for everyone who brought the tasty
salads and desserts.
TLC had their annual installation
luncheon on May 4th at the Lonestar
restaurant in Long Beach. It was a great
celebration. Sharon Larson, our former
President gave beautiful orchids to the
current Officers thanking them for their
time and hard work. Our new President’s
Mary Shebell and Eileen Wannett
announced the new 2010-2011 Officers
and welcomed them with a spray of
Dendrobiums. The food was fantastic and
the afternoon was enjoyed by everyone.
This is such a fine group of ladies who
come together to make life on the island
more enjoyable for all residents.

Chairman’s Message

How did the year fly by? When I
was installed last May by co-Chairs Eva
Kilgore and Barbra Snegg as Chairman of
the Huntington Harbour Philharmonic
Committee, I envisioned the year would
drag on. Not so. In a couple of weeks
I would hand over my job to incoming co-Chairs, Terry Feterik and Lisa
Mulvania, wishing them as successful a
year with as capable a Board as I had.
No Chairman can achieve success
without the star-studded Board that
we had in 2009-10. Special thanks to
First Vice Chairman Ways and Means
Chairman, Ellie Matthews, who
handled all transactions for all our fundraisers efficiently and smoothly. Second
Vice Chairman Cruise of Lights® dream
team, Marlene Nielsen, Sheree Novak,
Barbra Snegg, Jenny Huntsinger and
Kim Weddon attended to every detail
that this enormous fundraiser requires.
Joyce Zimmerman and her assistant,
Christine Faubert, our Boat Parade
Chairs, ensured a smooth and success-
ful Boat Parade. Tricia Pratto chaired
Special Projects and handled our “A Fair
2 Remember” Arts and Crafts Show
very competently.
Our
Huntington
Harbour
Philharmonic Juniors Fashion Show
was spectacular. Under the leadership
of Debbie Berry and Eva Kilgore, the
Juniors put on another successful fundraiser.
Of course, without the expert
publicity rendered by our Fourth Vice
Chairman, Public Relations Eva Kilgore,
none of this would have been possible.
Eva made sure that all our fundraisers
were well publicized.
The highlight of the year for us
Harbourites was the Grand Marshal
Celebration chaired by Terri Feterik and
Mike Nielsen. What a successful event,
honoring our Grand Marshal Brian
Griley who led a fantastic Boat Parade
and gave the baton to next year’s Grand
Marshal, Calvin Free.

HHPC: Marina Windjammer

The Windjammer group has completed its ushering at the Segerstrom Hall
where many 2nd and 5th graders were
treated to the likes of Mickey and friends
and the Anaheim high school symphony.
It was a joy to watch their beautiful little
faces as many students entered the hall for
the first time and expressed pure delight
as they viewed the enormity of the theater. Second graders truly get themselves
integrated into the musical gymnastics
of the musicians. Hands, feet and heads
keep rhythm as their ears and eyes indulge
themselves in classical pieces enjoyed by
everyone. Such a feeling of accomplishment for us as we relish the rewards of our
fundraising efforts!
Our music mobile has also been busy
as it travels to schools to enhance the
classroom music program with real instruments. Children get to engross themselves
with music, up close and personal, as
they touch and drink in the sights of
woodwinds, strings and percussions. Our
poor little van was about mobiled-out,
when some generous helping hands raised
enough funds for us to purchase a new
one. Thanks to you all.
The Windjammer group held our
annual installation luncheon at the home
of Joanne Fernback, where we feasted
on a gourmet meal prepared by Joanne’s
daughter, Allyson, who is an accomplished
chef. Karen Ridout handed the gavel
over to Ellie Mathews who will take the
reins for this group in the coming year.
We congratulate her and we congratulate
Karen who moves onto President of all
Committees. Other officers were installed
for the coming year and new members
and past presidents were recognized. We
were serenaded by a young man from the
Academy of Performing Arts, Huntington
Kyle Selig sings his heart out to us.
Beach High School. Kyle Selig sang several of his favorite songs for us. What a
smooth, melodic voice this performer has!
Kyle recently won the Music Center of Los
Angeles Spotlight Award Competition
which included a $5,000.00 scholarship.
He is on his way to Carnegie Melon in
the fall.
Our two final fundraising projects
for the year bring us to Peter’s Landing
on April 24 and 25 for a boutique of fun
and unique items, and the HH Juniors
Fashions Show on Sunday May 2 at the
Waterfront Hilton. Our members are
also encouraged to attend the Red Carpet
Premiere of the film “They Came to Pay”,
held at the Meadowlark Country Club-- a
fundraiser put on by the Huntington
Valley West Group.
Our incoming president, Ellie
Mathews, will lead us into another
funfilled year of activity, music and new
adventures. We always welcome new
members into the Windjammer Group.

March 18th an enthusiastic group of
Sandpiper members attended their March
meeting at the home of Suzanne Russell.
President Melissa Banning announced
the 2010-2011 officers and board members and that the installation would be
held at McKenna’s on April 15th. Music
Education Chair Linda Cassidy reported
that the Sandpipers sent docents to various
music programs in Orange County and
hosted a music mobile full of instruments
that were used to teach music appreciation in selected local schools. To celebrate
the Sandpipers hard work and success
during the 2009-2010 year, March 26th
the Sandpipers members enjoyed lunch
and an enjoyable afternoon at the Long
Beach Art Museum.

HHPC: Juniors

What a wonderful year our HHPC
juniors had! The juniors are our teen
volunteers, and this incredible group of
kids worked all year volunteering. Keep
in mind, they are all students, and have
intense workloads at school, besides giving their time to the community. Allison
Stellrecht and Brandon Wood were copresidents, and did an outstanding job
this year.
These teens collected over 200 coats
for the coat drive, 100 plus pairs of flipflops for our homeless kids, and helped
with An Affair 2 Remember. They’ve
been extremely busy! The juniors cleaned
our area beaches, helped with the boat
parade, the Cruise of Lights, grand marshal event...the list goes on and on and on!
A Trip to the Orient was the finale of a
marvelous year. Held at the Waterfront
Hilton, and packed with supporters, the
juniors walked the runway in style!
RVCA, Sullen, Rip Curl, Triple Two,
and No Rest for Bridget provided the
clothes, and the juniors were definitely
styling! Thank you to all of these companies for providing these cutting-edge
fashions!
Lisa Knot headed up our event this
year, with help from Eva Kilgore and
Debbie Berry. Eva and Debbie advised the
juniors this year for HHPC. Thank you to
Lisa for doing an amazing job, and to Eva
and Debbie!
