The DAISY Award Honors Outstanding Nurses
Truman Medical Centers has joined top hospitals
across the country who have implemented the
DAISY Award, an international program that
rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical
skill and compassionate care given by registered
nurses every day.
DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the
Immune System. The Foundation was formed in
November 1999, by the family of J. Patrick Barnes
who died at age 33 of complications of Idiopathic
Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP).
4
In his memory, Barnes’ family decided to honor the
nursing staff who cared for him during his illness.
The one positive thing they could hold on to from
the experience of his eight-week hospitalization was
the skillful and amazingly compassionate care he
received from his nurses - even when he was totally
sedated.
“All too often, nurses are taken for granted,” said
Tena Barnes Carraher, Patrick’s widow. “When
Patrick became ill, we saw nurses in a whole
different light. As a family, we realized nurses
weren’t receiving the recognition that they so

deserved. So we created DAISY as a way for patients
and families to be able to tell their stories about how
a nurse impacted their life in a positive way.”
Shannon Kuczynski, RN, Director of Nursing
Workforce Development, helped bring the program
to TMC. “I think it’s important that we recognize
our nurses for the work they do every day and
the DAISY Award is one way of doing that. It
lets patients, families and professional colleagues
have their say. Recognition through this program
expresses our personal, heartfelt appreciation to
nurses for the important difference they make in all
the lives they touch.”
Honorees so far include Linda Sousley, RN, TMC
Hospital Hill Practice Management, TMC’s DAISY
Award winner for October 2013; Keale Eckels, RN
in the TMC Lakewood Family Birthplace, recipient
of the November DAISY Award; Marlene Kissell,
RN, TMC Behavioral Health and Amy Walters, RN
TMC Lakewood LDRP, both winners for February.
Nurses can be nominated for the award by the
patients or by their peers. For more information,
contact Nursing Administration on either campus.

IMPACT
In a continuation of the billboard campaign begun in fall
2011, TMC continues to inspire Kansas Citians, this time
throughout the city.
The colorful, bold images, along with their succinct wording,
help build a powerful message and, hopefully, positive
reinforcement.
The campaign is part of CEO John W. Bluford’s “thinking
outside the bed” initiative to improve the health of the
community by getting outside of the four walls of the
hospital and bringing
health and wellness to
our patient base.
The initial campaign won accolades from organizations
across the nation, including two Gold Awards from
MARCOM International for outstanding community/public
awareness campaign and outstanding billboards. Several
hospitals and communities around the country also have
expressed interest in replicating this program.
According to the Arbitron National In-Car Study, more than
80 percent of drivers say they look at messages on roadside
billboards. Eight in 10 billboard viewers make a point to look
at the advertising message at least some of the time; nearly
half look at the billboard
ad each time or almost
each time they noticed
one. And more than half
report being impacted by
what they saw.
The campaign is just one strategy
to influence better health in
Kansas City.
“Billboards can have
a powerful effect,”
said Vicki Smith,
TMC Vice President
of Public Relations,
Marketing and Brand Management. “In those 5 to 10 seconds
that we have a driver’s attention, we can make a difference.”
The campaign, which began on the city’s east side, has
expanded to nearly 50 blocks, encompassing an area north
from 18th street to south on U.S. Highway 71.
The latest billboard campaign continues the theme of
messages encouraging passers-by to be the best they can
be. They include quotes from Maya Angelou and Rumi, the
ancient mystic.
The campaign also
contributes the added
bonus of clearing out the weathered and dilapidated
billboards that dot the urban core landscape.
TMC continues to partner with CBS Outdoor, the owner of
many of the billboards in the area, who has donated rental
costs of the billboards for this project. Once again, the ads
were developed by TMC’s Public Relations and Marketing
Department.
New billboards are scheduled to be on display in spring 2014.

Changing the Surgical Experience
Although there are no da Vinci works hanging in the TMC

result, da Vinci enables surgeons to operate with enhanced
vision, precision, dexterity and control.
Adam Kramer, DO, performed the first
single-site da Vinci Surgery utilizing
the Firefly Fluorescence system for a
gallbladder removal at the Lakewood
Surgery Center.
Truman Medical Centers has added
the da Vinci Surgical Robot to its
ever growing arsenal of surgical
options.
The product is called “da Vinci” in
part because Leonardo da Vinci
invented the first robot. He also
used unparalleled anatomical
accuracy and three-dimensional
details to bring his masterpieces to
life. The da Vinci Surgical System
similarly provides physicians with
such enhanced detail and precision
that the System can simulate an
open surgical environment while
allowing operation through tiny
incisions.
“It couldn’t have gone better,” Dr. Kramer
said. “Having this technology available
for our patients results in less pain, better
care, better recovery times and overall
better outcomes.”
The availability of the da Vinci system
was part of the reason Dr. Kramer and
his partner Christine Brock, DO, MBA,
decided to partner with TMC Lakewood
to provide services.
“The location of TMC Lakewood, the
expertise of the staff, efficiency of the
facility and the ability to take advantage of
technology such as the da Vinci Surgery
system made choosing TMC Lakewood easy for us and our
patients,” Dr. Kramer said.

used for hysterectomies, colectomies,
repairing hernias and removing gallbladders.
Robotic surgery has become a trusted alternative to
traditional surgery and conventional laparoscopy.
“Bringing the da Vinci robotic system to TMC Lakewood is
just one more step toward improving the patient experience. This minimally invasive approach to surgery results in less
discomfort for the patient and a much quicker recovery
time,” said Charlie Shields, COO of TMC Lakewood.
Physicians operate the da Vinci from a computer-controlled
surgical arm that features a magnified 3-D, high-definition
vision system and tiny wristed instruments that bend and
rotate with far more flexibility than the human wrist. As a

The benefits for patients are extensive. The small incisions
minimize risk of infections, the risk of blood clots is greatly
reduced as is the amount of post-surgical pain.

PILOT PROGRAM TO
TEST JCAT
TMC and Joslin Diabetes Center, an affiliate of Harvard
Medical School, have launched a pilot program to test
the capabilities of an innovative new tool called the
Joslin Clinical Analytical Tool (JCAT™). Using JCAT,
healthcare providers can systematically gauge the effectiveness of diabetes care, identify gaps in care earlier, and,
when appropriate, implement changes to the treatment
plan, thus reducing the risks for complications and improving health outcomes for those with diabetes.
“We are delighted to be working with Truman Medical
Centers on this project. TMC has a well-documented
track record of delivering innovative programs to help
people live healthier lives,” said Rich Jackson, MD,
Director of Medical Affairs, Healthcare Services, Joslin Diabetes Center and Associate Professor, Harvard
Medical School. “We are also very impressed by TMC’s
commitment to its community and the great work that it
continues in this realm as well. TMC is an ideal partner
for implementing an innovative program such as JCAT.”
SARAH SUDDUTH
TMC welcomes Sarah Sudduth,
MD, to the Obstetrics/Gynecology
Department. Dr. Sudduth is board
certified by the American Board
of Obstetrics and Gynecology
and is certified in daVinci robotic
surgery procedures. She will see

clinic. The primary care clinic is located at Good Samaritan
Project, in midtown Kansas City, and will provide people
living with HIV/AIDS a patient-centered medical home in
the Greater Kansas City Area.
This initiative will help close gaps in the healthcare system
and provide the nearly 5,000 Kansas Citians living with
HIV/AIDS access to healthcare that focuses on their unique
conditions.
GERARD GRIMALDI
Gerard Grimaldi, TMC Vice President of Health Policy and Government Relations, was honored by
Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill for
his history of public service in
Kansas City.
McCaskill read the tribute during the Gerard Grimaldi
legislative session in February. It read
in part: “In the course of my adult life, I have been fortunate
to meet many outstanding public servants - men and women
who exemplify leadership and a genuine desire to contribute
to the greater good. Of those public servants, Gerard is one
of the best.”
DOUG BRANDT
Doug Brandt has joined TMC as Associate Chief Financial
Officer. In this role, Brandt will serve as Chief Financial
Officer at TMC Lakewood as well as provide leadership for
corporate financial accounting, decision support, billing and
collection services, patient access and revenue integrity.
Prior to joining TMC, Brandt served as Controller and
Assistant Treasurer for 20 years at Heartland Health located
in St. Joseph, MO.

Level 3 RECOGNITION FROM NCQA
The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) announced
that Truman Medical Centers has achieved Level 3 (the highest)
recognition from the NCQA Patient-Centered Medical Home
2011 (PCMH 2011) program. The PCMH 2011 program emphasizes evidence-based, patient-centered processes that focus on highly
coordinated care and long-term relationships. TMC’s primary care
clinics at Hospital Hill and Lakewood each achieved this prestigious
recognition.
TMC demonstrated the ability to meet the program’s key elements,
embodying characteristics of the medical home. Standards align with
the joint principles of the patient-centered medical home established
with the American College of Physicians, the American Academy
of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the
American Osteopathic Association.
TMC President and CEO John Bluford was
named to the Kansas City Business Journal’s
“Power 100,” a list of the Kansas City area’s
most influential movers and shakers. The
publication says about Bluford: “As the CEO
of Truman Medical Centers for 15 years, John
Bluford has become the face of the organization in a way that few other hospital CEOs
have. Bluford has used his position to advocate for underserved populations of Kansas
City, and his name has become synonymous John Bluford
with many of those efforts.” Peggy Dunn,
Mayor of Leawood and TMC’s Board Chairman also was named in
the Power 100.
