Page 3A Chip Greene Elected as PHCC National Vice President The Plumbing & Mechanical Association of Georgia (PMA) is proud to recognize Charles “Chip” Greene, Greene & Associates, Macon, Georgia for his recent appointment to the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling-Contractors National Association (PHCC) Board. Chip Greene will serve as PHCC’s Vice President. Chip Greene is President of Greene & Associates, Inc., a full service mechanical contractor performing plumbing, and HVAC for commercial, institutional, and industrial projects all over middle Georgia. Greene & Associates has been in business for over 20 years. Mr. Greene has been on PMA’s board of directors for over 15 years. He served as PMA’s President from 20052007, and also served on PHCC’s Board as Zone 2 Director from 2009-2011. Chip is proud to be a 3rd generation mechanical contractor. PHCC-National Association is the oldest trade association in the construction industry and the premiere organization for the p-h-c professional. Since 1883, PHCC has been the leader in promotion, advancement, education and training. Today PHCC has more than PHCC installed its officers and members of the board of directors at the 131st annual convention’s closing reception in Las Vegas. PMA President Bobby Burns is excited that the group selected not only a historic property with ties to the plumbing industry but chose to bring the conference back to Georgia. The legacy of the original Jekyll Island Club is one of history and hospitality. Founded in 1886, the Club was once the private winter retreat of America’s wealthiest families with such members as Morgan, Rockefeller, Pulitzer and Vanderbilt. Between 1888 and 1928 these wealthy northern families built their winter homes, or “cottages” as they were called, designed to house entire families with staff. Hardly cottages, they exemplified Victorian tastes in architecture. Crane Cottage, in the style of Italian Renaissance, was built in 1917 for Richard Teller Crane, Jr. and his wife is the largest, most lavish of the cottages and has a landscaped formal sunken garden with fountains and upper terrace. Crane Cottage has been restored and is part of the Jekyll Island Club’s historic accommodations. During the 1920s, when Crane Co. expanded overseas, the company was the world’s leading manufacturer of valves and fittings. Crane Plumbing is now a unit of American Standard Brands. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend this meeting. For more information visit www.Plumbing Pros.com. PMA Director Jay Cunningham serves on the board along with Paul Wood, Chairman Craig Camuso, Randy Hatcher, Henry Kelly, John Patterson and Jesse Thomas. The Go Build campaign is designed to educate young people on the value of learning a trade, dispel their misconceptions about the skilled trade industry and inspire them to consider building a career as a skilled tradesman. Through this public awareness effort, public relations and social media campaign, Go Build aims to provide better opportunities for craft tradesmen, more highly skilled employees for businesses and enhanced economic development for Georgia and the nation. The Go Build Georgia Foundation is the private arm of the public/private partnership of the Go Build Georgia program undertaken by the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development. The Foundation was established to support the Go Build Georgia program by rolling out an educational campaign using television, print, online, social media outlets and promotional events. The end goal is to educate students and the workforce about the program and drive them to the Go Build Georgia website where they can learn about opportunities in the skilled trades. He encouraged ph-c contractors in the room to look for opportunities that could transform their industry. Federal Regulations Called “Silent Killer” Page 5A Karlgaard also reviewed trends in the United States’ economy, including reasons for its current substandard rate of two percent growth. He described increasing federal regulations as a “silent killer” stalling the entrepreneurial spirit of small businesses. Bradford White President and CEO Nick Giuffre shared this belief during the Bradford White Breakfast, stating that new water heater regulations are creating a burden on manufacturers and their ability to compete. He encouraged PHCC members and their employees to get involved in the mid-year election in 2014. HVAC Contest Debuts The Product & Technology Showcase floor featured a new attraction this year: the PHCC Educational Foundation's first HVAC Apprentice Contest. After a day of competition at the College of Southern Nevada, the seven apprentices completed their assigned tasks the next day in the middle of the show floor. Page 6A Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 PMA Member, Jim Clarke Opens Apex Disaster Management Apex Disaster Management was founded in the belief that there was a need for a different approach. Jim Clarke, Owner of Apex Disaster stated “Typically, the way water damage companies have promoted themselves to plumbing companies was to offer larger referral fees and splashier give-aways than the competition. Our belief is that this bidding war is an unhealthy trend for both our industries. Mr. Clarke continued the interview by saying, “We all have advertising costs and yes, a large part of a resto- ration company’s budget is its referral program. It is also true that if that budget gets out of balance it has to be made up somewhere else. Often it is our mutual customer that suffers.” At Apex Disaster Management their focus is on taking care of the homeowner. “Plumbing companies invest a lot of time and money to obtain and keep customers. When they trust us with one of their customers it is our responsibility to help strengthen that relationship. We take that responsibility seriously”, Mr. Clarke stated. From Apex Disaster Management’s base in Norcross, they cover from Locust Grove to Dahlonega. While Apex is a new company, their staff brings years of experience and expertise. Jim Clarke, a forty year resident of the Atlanta area, graduated from Oglethorpe University and is IICRC certified in water and mold remediation. He is active in and has been a strong sup- porter of the PMA for the past four years. Todd Christopher, Apex Operations Manager, is a former insurance agent and certified Hazmat instructor. He has 15+ years’ experience in the restoration industry. Paul Wendell, Service Manager, is certified in water damage, fire and smoke restoration and large loss management. He brings 12 years of restoration experience to Apex. Apex Disaster Management provides prompt and professional service tailored to fit your needs and the needs of your customers. Mr. Clarke stated “24 hours a day, seven days a week, Apex Disaster Management is there to make things right. Whether the emergency is small affecting part of a room or a complete loss, your customer will be well taken care of and put back together quickly.” “We grow our business by helping you grow yours. Those words – Made-inAmerica and Made-in-Michigan — are of utmost importance to Michiganders. I know since I was born and raised in the Metro Detroit area. The past years in Michigan have been very tough economic wise. And even though many people assume most manufacturing has been sent overseas, manufacturing water heaters at Bradford White’s Middleville, Michigan plant is going strong. I just visited the plant and learned that well over 7,000 water heaters come off the assembly line every day. Based on my visit to Bradford White this week, it’s easy to see that the com- pany has remained true to its founding principles which are supporting the American worker by manufacturing products in the U.S.; employee ownership to encourage pride and loyalty; and dedication to the trade through wholesale only distribution. Bradford White subsidiaries are growing as well, which includes Laars Heating Systems — the company has added a new customer training center and additional factory space — and Niles Steel Tank has invested in process equipment and tank lining technology. I also had the opportunity to visit Bradford White’s International Technical Excellence Center, iTEC, while Lee Supply, a wholesale customer of Bradford White, was visiting to partake in hands-on training sessions. The training center, which is 18,000-sq.ft. and LEED Gold certified, features a high-tech lecture hall, a 5million BTU capacity “livefire” training lab with 10 working stations for live demonstrations and hands-on learning experience. Plus, there is a mechanical room in the building that showcases a variety of energyefficient, variable-frequency drive HVAC systems with boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, geothermal equipment and domestic hot water tanks. Highlights of the International Technical Excellence Center include: a rainwater harvesting system that provides the building with nonpotable water; solar thermal panels that supply heat and hot water throughout the building; photovoltaic power supplements electrical power; an in-floor radiant heating system throughout CONTINUED on PAGE 14A Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 Page 13A Page 14A Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 Governor and Mrs. Deal with PMA member Steve Mitchell, CCS Staffing PMA Members Join Governor Deal to Recognize the Go Build Georgia Foundation Governor and Mrs. Deal with Jay Cunningham and daughter Maddie Governor and Mrs. Deal with PMA member Zach Hudgins, White Wolf E V E N T S CONTINUED from PAGE 1A C A L E N D A R Send all of your open house, continuing education, seminar, and trade show information to: THE GEORGIA PLUMBING NEWS CALENDAR: [email protected] 2nd Tuesday of Month South Metro PMA LOCATION: McDounough CONTACT: Tim Irwin 404-361-1928 January 21st-23rd, 2014 AHR Expo LOCATION: New York City CONTACT: www.ahrexpo.com 3rd Tuesday of Month North Georgia PHCC LOCATION: Logan’s Roadhouse, Athens CONTACT: Carol Lively 706-769-7063 January 26th, 2014 1-5PM PMA Snow Mountain Day LOCATION: Stone Mountain, Georgia CONTACT: www.plumbingpros.org 3rd Thursday of Month Central Georgia PMA LOCATION: Texas Cattle Company CONTACT: Doug Kersey, 478-788-1632 February 4th-6th, 2014 Kitchen & Bath Industry Show LOCATION: Las Vegas CONTACT: www.kbis.com/ 4th Tuesday of Month Northwest Metro PMA, Marietta LOCATION: Delkwood Grill CONTACT: Troy Callahan 678-410-1629 March 13-14th, 2014 CEFGA Career Expo Skills USA LOCATION: Georgia International Convention Center CONTACT: www.cefga.org 4th Tuesday of Month ASPE Atlanta Monthly Meeting LOCATION: Villa Christina CONTACT: [email protected] March 31st, 2014 MLB Opening Day Atlanta Braves in Milwaukee December 3rd-6th, 2013 NGWA Groundwater Expo LOCATION: Nashville, TN CONTACT: www.ngwa.org April 24th, 2014 PMA Plumbing, Heating, Cooling Expo LOCATION: Marietta, Georgia CONTACT: www.plumbingpros.org CONTINUED from PAGE 12A Made in America the building; and a snowmelt system. I also want to mention that recently, Bradford White introduced its new Brute Series line of gasfired boilers and volume water heaters – both of these products are manufactured at the Laars plant in Rochester, New Hampshire. The product line includes both residential and commercial boilers, from 50 to 2,400 MBH, and up to 98% AFUE. The Brute Series includes the 50 to 225 MBH, chimney-vented Brute Mini; the modulating-condensing 80 to 850 MBH Brute Elite; the 95% AFUE, 125 MBH, wallmounted Brute Elite with optional DHW Combi models; the 1000 to 1700 MBH, mod-con Brute Elite offering a 10:1 turndown; the 200 to 2,000 MBH Brute Deluxe; the multi-stage 200 to 2,000 MBH Copper Brute II ; and the 1,200 to 2,400 MBH Brute Magnum. The Brute product line also includes volume water heaters ranging from 150 to 2,400 MBH in standard efficiency and highly efficient condensing models. The new product line is added to Bradford White’s extensive line of residential and commercial water heaters. While driving back to Chicago from my Bradford White visit, I couldn’t help but think what a great example Bradford White is to the plumbing industry and manufacturers in general — Bradford White is proof that it is possible to manufacture product in the U.S. and be successful and competitive. Thank you Bradford White for manufacturing in the U.S.A. and in Michigan! Someone needs to instruct the referees at my kid’s soccer games that the referees need to rule or manage the game. It seems the rules change every game depending what referees you have. It is very frustrating as a parent although the kids don’t seem to mind, probably because they just stay confused. Like the last game my daughter had; the referee was not calling hand balls but if you lifted your foot on a throw in, you got called every time. Or my son’s games, you talk about confusing. For my son’s games, the fields were lined at the beginning of the season and the goal box was painted too small. Our coach noticed it and instructed our goalies they could come outside of the box and get the ball with their hands. It seems most teams agreed to this along with the referees with few exceptions. Well more than half the season has elapsed and the goal box was fixed last week and is now correctly painted on the field. So guess what, yep our goalie goes outside the box to get the ball (as they have been playing all season) and the referee blows the whistle for a hand ball by the goalie. Talk about confusing, how do you teach kids the proper game when the rules keep changing? Maybe we need that referee at my daughter’s game. I would like to close that gap, and eventually surpass our friends from the Northeast. Although hefty, I believe it’s an attainable goal. As a reminder, ASPE implemented a cost-savings membership program allowing past members of ASPE to reinstate their membership at a significant discount. The deadline for this proCONTINUED on PAGE 14B game and teach me how to play?” Me, “What chess game?” Son, “The one in the top of the closet.” Me, “We don’t have a chess game in the top of the closet.” Son, “Yes we do.” So I get up from my comfortable couch and reluctantly set down the remote control and go to the closet. Sure enough, there is a chess game buried in there. I get it down, we opened the box and all the pieces were actually there. I found the instructions (dated 1978) and proceed to set up the board per the instructions (rules). Yes, I had to read the rules so that tells you a little bit about how much I know about chess – not much at all. Then I read the rules of the game of chess to my son and showed him each playing piece and how they could move. That little sucker knew the rules as soon as I read them to him. Now I have to copy him when he sets up the board so I can remember how. He always wants to be white since white always goes first. Maybe I just need to accept the fact that he is a nerd. But then again, so is his dad. Speaking of being a nerd and playing by some confusing rules, as you know, the 2012 International Plumbing Code (IPC) with Georgia Amendments goes into effect January 1, 2014. Take a look at Section 607 regarding Hot Water Supply Systems. The Georgia Amendment reads 607.1 Where required. “In residential occupancies, hot water shall be supplied to plumbing fixtures and equipment utilized for bathing, washing, culinary purposes, cleansing, laundry or building sessing what has worked in the past should give you confidence in your ability to make positive change and teach you to trust your intuition, which may have served you well in the past. Be open to the possibility of failure Positive change isn’t necessarily brought about by the ‘right’ decision, and it’s very rare that everything goes according to plan. Instead, take heart in the fact that, even if a decision doesn’t go initially as planned, it will likely provide some valuable lessons or opportunities for the future. Take a step back When you’re too close to a subject your perception is bound to be warped, and your judgement can become clouded. Try removing yourself from the immediate situation, (sometimes physically) to overcome this. Take ten minutes out of the office or jot-down your thought process to distance yourself from what’s happening. A detached, objective viewpoint will lead to a more informed decision and could help you notice potential ‘blindspots’, which have prevented you from making effective changes. Share your enthusiasm with others Optimism is contagious. Thankfully, 81% of small business owners describe themselves as naturally optimistic. As a leader, you should look to share this enthusiasm by connecting with staff as individuals – tailoring incentives and personalising communication and feedback. As staff become more engaged, they’ll be more willing to promote a culture of change and embrace new ideas in your business. Trust your gut Whether you coin it ‘intuition’, your ‘gut instinct’ or just a ‘hunch’, the conviction that an idea could float or sink is something you should pay attention to. While gut instinct is closely linked to passion and commitment, which can lead to an inner clarity or decisiveness, it should always be counter-balanced with a sense of what’s realistic for your business. Increase your Vitamin D uptake Scientists have proven that those with higher levels of serotonin are more optimistic and therefore more likely to take a positive approach to change. You can boost your own serotonin levels from Vitamin D by getting some sun and eating foods naturally high in this such as salmon. This will help put you in a different frame of mind – one more receptive to the positive potential of new ideas. Take the time to listen Listening to those around you is not only a great source of inspiration, it’s also vital for sourcing how individuals can make a difference within the company going forward. Communal activities like a team day away from the office are invaluable in establishing a team ethos and getting a chance to hear from staff at all levels. If you get a sense that your staff are hungry for changes, this will help propel you to make them. Don’t assume the mar- ket will be against you Rather than assuming the economy or marketplace is set against you, opening up your thinking to the possibility that there are lots of stakeholders out there who want you to succeed, including the Government, your local community and suppliers to small businesses. Look for new deals, offers, advice and services that suit your needs rather than sticking with the same old options. Communicate your situation Just talking to an expert in your field, a business consultant or an old friend can help you gain the confidence to push your business forward. If you are facing a difficult time in your business, the fresh perspective can help highlight areas that need change. Don’t get complacent Finally, according to TMobile’s research, 23% of business owners describe themselves as too busy to make positive changes to their business. However, avoiding change isn’t just a means of staying put; it’s a recipe for getting overtaken by the competition. Within today’s economy, those businesses pushing innovation and new ways of working will come out on top while the rest are left behind. This is more applicable than ever to today’s business world, where change is often taking place at a faster rate than ever before. Small businesses in particular need to have the willingness to embrace fresh ideas and opportunities to keep them innovating and developing their services so they can compete with larger players in their marketplace. Recent research from TMobile of over 2,000 small business owners found 20% of small business owners admit to worrying about change and 9% are prevented from making changes as they believe they won’t be welcomed by others in the company. With an inability to cope with change being a psychological issue, here is my advice to help small business owners make positive changes for the benefit of the bottom line of their business, as well as for staff, their customers and, of course, themselves: Learn from the past It is natural to fear change and risk taking. To address this, you should look back on the risks and decisions that you have made in the past and that have ultimately got you to where you are today. As- Page 5B CONTINUED from PAGE 1B Technical maintenance. In nonresidential occupancies, hot water shall be supplied for culinary purposes, cleansing, laundry or building maintenance purposes. In nonresidential occupancies, hot water or tempered water shall be supplied for bathing and washing purposes except for hand-washing facilities. Accessible hand washing facilities regardless of the facility shall not be required to be supplied with hot water or tempered water.” So what in the world does that mean? Well maybe the code guys straightened it out and maybe not. In my opinion, for the commercial building that I am designing, I don’t have to have hot water or tempered water for hand washing facilities. And I don’t have to have hot water or tempered water for accessible hand washing facilities regardless of the facility I am designing. OK, now look at sections 607.1.1 and 607.1.2 back in the 2012 IPC which have not been revised by the Georgia Amendments. 607.1.1 Temperature limiting means. ”A thermostat control for a water heater shall not serve as the temperature limiting means for the purposes of complying with the requirements of this code for maximum allowable hot or tempered water delivery temperature at fixtures.” 607.1.2 Tempered water temperature control. Tempered water shall be supplied through a water temperature limiting device that conforms to ASSE 1070 and shall limit the tempered water to a maximum of 110ºF. This provision shall not supersede the requirement for protective shower valves in accordance with Section 424.3. Now what does that mean? If you remember way back in the Georgia Amendments, it deleted the requirement of this additional ASSE 1070 mixing valve. But now, this portion of the code has not been deleted. So you do not have to have hot or tempered water to commercial hand washing facilities. But when you do have hot or tempered water at a lavatory, it has to be through an ASSE 1070 device. This is also duplicated in the Georgia Amendment to Section 416.5 under lavatories. 416.5 Tempered water for public hand-washing facilities. “Tempered water may be delivered from lavatories and group wash fixtures located in public toilet facilities provided for customers, patrons and visitors. If provided, tempered water shall be deCONTINUED on PAGE 14B Page 6B Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 Page 7B Scenes from Central Pipe and Supply Move to New Expanded Facility Gayle Ross with Eddie Dinkens and David Brown of Landrum Supply Garry Carter, George Ford and Dwayne Gee Rodney Wilson and Jackie Towns of Makson Inc., Randy Lane of Globe Sprinkler and Dan Morrison of CP&S Dough Owens, Joe Black Sr. and Joe Black Jr. Bob Hodge of Harry Warren, Ryan Lundy of Anvil and Guy Hightower of CP&S Fortline Supply’s Allen Harris, Billy Leroux, Brian Kinder and George Reeder Jim Lindstrom , Doug Owens and Stephen Duckworth Troy Williams of U.S Sprinkler , John Chavis of CP&S, Jeff Dennis of U.S. Sprinkler with Steve Sheppard -President Of Central Pipe and Supply Deloris Baskin, Phyllis Sheppard, Steve Sheppard, William Edwards and Gary Cole Page 10B Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 Scenes from the Annual PHCC National Convention in Las Vegas Aaron Fowler of MMC Construction, Josh Gross of MESA Mechanical, Bobby Burns, President of PMA of Georgia-Lakeside Plumbing Dorthy Reddy, Nicde Urizzo, Tom Therox and Susan, Tracy Threhall and Ken Nielson Bill Hall, Amy Souders and Steve Edwards of WinWholesale Joe and Ursula Whitney of North Shore Mechanical with Jim Pendergrass, Executive Director of NCPMA Bruce Carnavale with Rick Whitaker of NCPMA Kirk Livernash and Paul Adelman showing new Souix Chief products to Tim Carr of Silvana Plumbing Jack Morgan of The Plumbing News, Vice President of PHCC Chip Green of Green & Associates with Jim Pendergrass, Executive Director of NCPMA Dan Roberts and Keith Hubbard showing Oatey’s new True Set Drain to Tracy Lange of Lange Plumbing Francisca French, Dan Lucy, Brian Santiago and Samantha Hyzny James McStrayvock, Jim McGoldrick of Bradford White, Bobby Burns, President of PMA of Georgia and Bruce Carnavale of Bradford White Charlie Clark and Ethan Nobbs showing new Aquatherm products to Dexter Peter and Jeff Meyers Danny and Carol Richardson of Richardson Plumbing Ellen Whitaker, Executive Director of PMA of Georgia with Jim Pendergrass, Executive Director of NCPMA Dan and Marie Bonetti of Bonetti Plumbing checks out new Viega products shown by Matt Bohmer, Tom Keefe and Mike Deminck Jack Morgan with TAPHCC President Michael Vance Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 Page 11B Scenes from the Annual PHCC National Convention in Las Vegas Jennifer Vance and Denise Thompson of PHCC Auxiliary Lyle Greenville and Ken Kerr of ABPA Chris Martin, Gordon Macewan, Steve LehTonen (not shown Dwight Perkins and Bob Carpenter The PHCC Plumbing Apprentice Contest Richard Grossman and Adam Hale of Bemis Manufacturing Chase McNary and Rich Canfield showing Milwaukee Tools Chris Williams and Paul Sterling of Ferguson with Vance McHenry of Ward Manufacturing Herb Phillips of Herb Phillips Plumbing checks out new Legend Products shown by Steve Williams and Bill Werthman Rick Thompson of The TAPHCC with Jack Morgan Ken Roberts of Delta with Michael Smith and Walt Wegner of Mega Western Sales Nancy Zinkgrat and Jerry Radomski showing new Hammond Valve Chip Green for VP-Chip shown here at his Campaign Headquarters Pre Election Michael Knight, Tony Fasanella, Marty Iacampo, showing The New Personal Plumber Carol Flanagavot of Souix Chief with Markos and Carmen of American Standard Jim McGoldrick and Nick Guiffre of Bradford White Page 12B CONTINUED from PAGE 7A Connect 2013 director, PMA North Carolina Past President/Treasurer: Rocco Fana, executive director, PHCC of Ohio Two-year directors: Beth Killen; Jim Pendergrass; Ellen Whitaker, PMA Georgia; John Busbee, PHCC of Nevada; and Tracy Threlfall, PHCC of California One-year directors: Dave Davia, PHCC of Colorado; Rocco Fana, Jr.; Danielle Dorsey, PHCC of San Diego; Nicole Urizzo, PHCC of New Jersey; and Mike McGraw, PHCC of Pennsylvania Ex-Officio: Gerry Kennedy, Georgia Plumbing News - October 31st, 2013 PHCC–National Association Auxiliary Officers: President: Cheryl Mosier President-elect: Jan Dugger Vice President: Angie Westman Membership Secretary: Teresa Mayes Recording Secretary: Anne Williams Treasurer: Patty Jones Marketing Secretary: Denise Thompson Award Winners During CONNECT 2013’s Awards Luncheon and the Installation Reception, several award winners were recognized. Well, the tour was great, the food outstanding, and when they unveiled the newest plumbing technology the stage had been set, pun intended. Dyson introduced a brand new sensor faucet line that incorporates a hand dryer. The faucet looks like a cool set of motor cycle handle bars (sorry Dyson for this jacked up description). The water comes out of the faucet behind the handle bars and when you are ready to dry your hands, you stick them under the handle bars and the blower in the handle bars blows the water off your hands and back into the sink. It was ingenious really. No more dripping water all over the floor. The Fox theater is one of the first places in the United States that you will see this technology. Keep your eyes open for the Dyson Tap in the coming days for your upcoming projects. Keep the innovative products coming and I will keep educating you on the latest advances.
