Since that date, it has sponsored the annual German Day celebration, now one of the oldest of its kind in the U.S. This has grown into the celebration of German Day Weekend on the first weekend in June of each year. MEDIA: Since the 1970s it has promoted and supported German-American radio programs that are broadcast in the area. In the 1990s it successfully petitioned to have Deutsche Welle broadcast on the cable television channels of the area. Since 1995 it has published German-American News/Deutsch-Amerikanische Nachrichten to inform people in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana of German-American events and activities. Its website and Facebook sites have attracted an international audience. EDUCATION AWARDS: Since the 1970s, the GACL has presented awards to outstanding students of German at high schools in the Greater Cincinnati area. OKTOBERFEST CINCINNATI: In 1976 the German-American Citizens League suggested that Cincinnati sponsor an annual Oktoberfest and met with local breweries and the Chamber of Commerce to organize the first such celebration that year and has remained on the planning committee of this annual festival, now the second largest outside of Munich. MUNICH SISTER CITY ASSOCIATION: In 1983 the GACL and the Tri-state German-American School Society provided the impetus for the formation of the Munich Sister City Committee. This developed into the Munich Sister City Association, which worked for the creation of the sister city relationship with Munich. GERMAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH: Since 1989 it has sponsored German-American Heritage Month in October with a month-long series of programs, lectures, and exhibits dealing with German and German-American history and culture. BOCKFEST: In 1992 it helped organize the first annual Bockfest in Cincinnati, now the oldest such celebration in the U.S. , and continues to work closely with the Over-the-Rhine Brewery District. HISTORIC MARKERS: In 1996 it was responsible for the placement of historic informational signs on the former German streets in Cincinnati, which were changed during World War I. Recently (2014), it has also done likewise for the former German streets in Covington and Newport, Kentucky. In 2001 it placed a historical marker “Cincinnati’s German Heritage” at Sawyer Point along the Ohio River in cooperation with the Ohio Historical Society. In 2005, it dedicated a historical marker at Findlay Market regarding the Anti-German Hysteria of World War I. GERMAN HERITAGE MUSEUM: In 2000 it opened the German Heritage Museum in West Fork Park to serve as a focal point in presenting, preserving and displaying the German cultural heritage of the region. This museum is now considered one of the best of its kind in the U.S. In 2014, it dedicated the German Heritage Monument at the Museum. In addition to its museum functions, the German Heritage Museum serves as an information center on German heritage in the region. These and other contributions have been made by the GermanAmerican Citizens League in the last 120 years to preserve and maintain the German heritage and to contribute to U.S.-German relations. German Genealogy Day, May 9th, 2015 The Hamilton County Genealogical Society is excited to present a “German Geneaogy Day” on Saturday, May 9th, from 10:00 – 2:00. It will be held at the Kolping Center, located at 10235 Mill Road, Cincinnati, OH 45231. You can get a map and directions at this link: http://www.kolpingcenter.com/kcdirections.php There will be three recognized speakers for their expertise in German culture and genealogy: HCGS President, Kenny Burck, Past-President and Treasurer, Jeff Herbert, and Bob Rau. Their specific topics will be listed in further communications from the society. The Kolping Center has free parking and the building is easily accessible. You will be able to purchase beer, soft drinks, German pastries and pretzels throughout the day. Each speaker will do a 4560 minute talk with small breaks in between and the opportunity to ask questions at the end. We hope you take this opportunity to get to know other society members as well as members of the Kolping Society who may be in attendance. There is no cost for this program with the exception of optional food and drink purchases. Questions? Contact Kathy Reed, Program Director at programs@hcgsohio. org or call her at 513-295-1970.
