Growth on a Grand Scale
There are no great limits to growth because there are no limits of human
intelligence, imagination and wonder. Ronald Reagan
The 68th Annual Arizona National Livestock Show is now in the record
books and the success of our composite efforts was evident in the results
we experienced as a stock show family. Volunteers, members, our leaders,
contractors, staff, exhibitors, sponsors and all stakeholders are to be
congratulated and thanked for their dedication, participation and hard work. The
combined talents of many secured opportunities and meaningful experiences for
our state’s residents and the thousands that visit Arizona during the last week in
December.
The unprecedented growth of 2015 was certainly a blessing while it provided
challenges as well. The impact of an additional 1,700 entries and 400 more
families than in the past hauling trailers filled with more livestock, more tack,
more equipment and more space requirements changed the dynamics of how
2015 Supreme Champion Barrow
we approached everything. From entry processing; to a massive arrival day and
vet checks; to all the reports required by a brand new computer program. Yes and who can forget more electrical
requirements. Our reaction was adjustment, cooperation, team work and imagination; not to mention a sense of humor
and a smile. The end result was a very satisfied customer hosted by an experienced and talented “ANLS Team”.
Some of the results of our composite efforts produced a record selling price for the Supreme Champion Steer, the
Supreme Champion Lamb, Supreme Turkey and Supreme Pen of Broilers. We saw an increase of 104% in junior
livestock entries, a record breaking Gilt Sale, an increase in ANLS membership of 21%, an inaugural Ranch Horse
Sale, 22% more open entries and a first ever 4-H and FFA Creed contest. Our exhibitors traveled from 24 states and
spent more money on food, lodging, shopping and entertainment while at “The Vacation Show”.
As we review the results of 2015 and begin our plans for improvement and the potential for further growth in 2016,
please share your personal experiences and thoughts for how the process can be enhanced and what will continue to
make this show better than it is today. Your active engagement will make a difference.
Thank you for your support of the ANLS!

Greetings from sunny Arizona! Our spring
jackpot season is in full swing, babies are
hitting the ground and we are seeing the
desert green up. Catchers and pitchers are
reporting to spring training and everything
is becoming new again. This is a good time
to reflect on the past year and look forward
to how we are going to make this year
better.
A huge thank you to all of you that
participated, exhibited, volunteered, visited or supported our recently
concluded 68th Annual Livestock and Horse Show! What a show it
was! You will see some highlights elsewhere in this newsletter with
some specifics, but it was one for the books. Some highlights include
record prices in our Junior Sale and Grand Canyon Gilt Sale. Our
Ranch Replacement Heifer program continued strong with the addition
of a Ranch Horse Sale. Junior livestock entries were up 104% and we
had some great sponsors including Show-Rite Feeds as our presenting
sponsor and Stand Alone Feed as our Titanium Sponsor. Speaking
of partnerships, Arizona Farm Bureau really did a magnificent job of
feeding several hundred people at our Cattlemen’s Day and Junior Auction.
We are grateful for all of these great partners we have in “Growing the
Future.”
Someone a whole lot wiser than me helped me understand that to be
successful in business, an organization needs to have good people, good
product and good processes. As I spoke with people and reflected through
our wrap-up meeting, I tried to keep this in mind. I am convinced that
we have great people on our team, starting with our Executive Director,
Michael Bradley, and Staff Members Meg Anema, Rochell Planty and Renee
Roach. This team worked diligently to make the show work this year. Our
volunteers are top notch and dedicated thousands of hours doing everything
from welcoming people to running shows and picking up trash. We have a
good product. The ANLS has experienced record growth and participation
from exhibitors and sponsors. We are attracting more public attendance and
recognition. Our team has been recognized by several livestock and fair
organizations for media pieces, newsletters, websites and more. Finally,
we have some very good processes. For example, once our check-in started
rolling, it went very well and was organized. Lines weren’t too long and
everyone got in on time. An example of a process that we need to improve is
the pen space situation. With the record growth we are experiencing, we need
to be creative and try to get a handle on how many animals may actually show
up.
Anyway, that’s how I read the situation. Please feel free to call me, Michael
Bradley, or any member of our executive board with your issues or concerns.
I promise you that we do not take them lightly and will address them. Again,
thank you for your participation and I am looking forward to making 2016
even better by focusing on people, product and process!
Cheers,

The 68th Arizona National Livestock Show was a major success, all
thanks to the countless volunteers, staff members, sponsors, and top
quality exhibitors! This year, 24 different states were represented with
nearly 3,000 exhibitors showing livestock! We started the week off
with the prestigious Arizona National Gala. At the Gala, scholarship
recipients were recognized as well as all major contributors and
volunteers! The rest of the week was just as wonderful as the opening
night. I really enjoyed being a part of the Master Showmanship contest,
the Supreme Champion selections and most importantly, meeting with
all the exhibitors and their families as well as the sponsors and countless
volunteers. We closed out the week with the annual Junior Market
Auction where the hard work exhibitors had put into their livestock paid
off. We are already planning for the 69th Arizona National Livestock
Show and can't wait for you to join us once again!
ANLS AMBASSADOR
Greetings from sunny Arizona!
AMBASSADOR CORNER
The 52nd Arizona National Horse Show was a
great way to kick off 2016! I was able to be a
reasons taker for the Youth Horse Judging contest,
which was jam-packed with FFA students bringing
the heat to win the titles of 1st place team and
individual. This was an amazing opportunity
because I had the chance to work with the
exhibitors one-on-one. While it rained nearly the
whole week, it still made for a great experience
and another successful Horse Show!
Even though the 68th Arizona National has come
and gone, there are still a lot of events that are
going on this spring. I will be traveling to Phoenix,
Casa Grande and Tucson to help out at numerous
2016 Champion FFA Horse Judging Team
events. First, I spend a weekend in northern Arizona
AAEC - Prescott Valley
at the Arizona Cattlemen's Weekend, followed by
the Yuma County Fair the end of March, and then
continue to the Maricopa County Fair April 13 through the 17. Finally, I will end my journey as the Arizona
National Livestock Show Ambassador by attending the Pima County Fair towards the end of April. I am filled
with excitement to be able to share this time of year with all the Pima, Pinal and Maricopa County exhibitors!
I would like to thank everyone who has made this year possible. Not only to the supporters of the Arizona
National Livestock and Horse Show, but to all those people who helped exhibitors make it to their county fairs.
Exhibitors, if you get a chance, reach out to those who have helped you throughout your experience. For me, I
would not be where I am without the love and support from my parents, Scott and Cathy Ollendick, and my FFA
Advisors, Dennis Bushong, Ken Johnson and Marci Alderman. Finally, I would like to thank the wonderful Staff,
Show Committee, Executive Committee and the many volunteers that made the 68th Arizona National Livestock
and Horse Show possible and a huge success!
Best,
Justen Ollendick

Arizona Pioneer Stockmen's Association
The Arizona Pioneer Stockmen's Association gathered at
the Arizona National Livestock Show on December 29 for
their luncheon and awards program. This annual event is
one the members look forward to each year to reconnect
with friends from across Arizona and to welcome new
members.
In addition to the wonderful conversations they
encountered, Pioneers also honored the Pioneer Stockman
of the Year. This year, John Hays of Wickenburg, Arizona,
was the honoree of this prestigious award. His extended
family and many friends joined him for this special
recognition.
