Message from the Superintendent
Congratulations to the Class of 2011. I am sure that you will be successful in your
future endeavors.
We are currently in the process of wrapping up this past school year and beginning
preparations for next year. Randy Ebling has retired as the AD/Director of Student
Activities/Facilities Manager. I am very grateful to Randy for stepping in and taking
over this program a few years ago. I believe that we have hired an excellent
replacement in Scott Grant. Scott comes to us from Findlay City Schools where he
was a high school teacher, Golf coach, and assistant AD. He brings a youthful energy
to the program and I am sure that he will do a good job of taking our athletic department
to the next level. We are currently interviewing for the positions of head boys
basketball, a high school English position, and a middle school Science position. I
hope to have these positions filled by the end of June. Additionally, the board will begin
interviewing for a new Treasurer to replace Jan August who will be retiring in December.
Financially, the district is expected to begin deficit spending next year. Thankfully, we have a good carryover balance and will use our funds as effectively and
efficiently as possible. Just like you would do at home when expenses outgrow your
pay check, you start to cut back. Even though you have money in the savings account
you know it won’t last forever. Hopefully, with the state’s financial situation showing
some improvement and an improved local economy, we will be able to make our
“savings account” last as long as possible.
The board offered to sell the house at 207 S. Main St. to be relocated to a different
location in April. No one attended the sale nor has anyone made inquiries about the
house since then. The board will be looking at selling any of the Victorian woodwork,
radiators, doors, etc. before beginning removal of the house. Please contact my office
if anyone is interested in some of these materials. A formal notice will be appearing
in the local paper and information will be available soon on the district website.
The district has just received a report from the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission (OSFC) reviewing the condition of our facilities. This report outlines millions of
dollars in repairs and remodeling that need to be done to our buildings to bring them
up to today’s standards. The board will be reviewing this report and other information
to determine what should be done to our existing facilities. After the board has had
a chance to review this information, a potential community meeting could be scheduled
next fall to present this information to the public.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make the 2010-2011 school year another
successful year for the Van Buren Schools. Enjoy your summer! August 24 will be
here before you know it.

New Additions to the School
Next time you visit
the school check out
the new benches purchased by the classes
of 2006, 2007, 2008 and
2009. Two benches rest
outside of the auditorium lobby and the third
is in the medieval garden between the two
schools. The bench in
the garden is a memorial to all those students
who have passed away
while attending Van
Buren Schools.
Congratulations to Callie Bays on Receiving This
Year's Rieck’s Award
Established in 1998 as a joint
effort between the Hancock County
ESC and Kent Weaver, owner of
Rieck’s Gallery in Findlay, this award
seeks to promote the visual arts by
honoring its recipient with a place in
the hallway of the ESC building as
well as a monetary gift of $300.
The Rieck’s Gallery Award is
given to a senior art student who
intends on pursuing a career in the
visual arts - whether as an educator,
professional artist, or a creator in the
realm of design. Former recipients
have gone on to schools such as
Columbus School of Art and Design
and local universities.
The purpose of this honor is twofold. Not only does the Rieck’s
Gallery Award seek to promote the
arts in Hancock County, it also gives a venue for display and presentation of art and
artists.
In the past, pictures and articles have appeared in local papers as well as the ESC
monthly newsletter. Kent Weaver also places the artwork on display at his gallery for
one month after the award has been presented. The permanent location for the piece
will be at the HCESC.
Callie is the daughter of Brian and Cheryl Bays. She will attend the University of
Cincinnati and major in Graphic Design, and her high school art teacher was Rhonda
Nye.
Labor of Love by Van Buren Students
On Monday, May 16, Van Buren High School held their third annual Locks of Love
hair-cutting ceremony in memory of former student Amanda Simon, who was a
member of the class of 2010. This year’s donations came from 31 individuals who all
were willing to give their hair for various reasons. Some had family members who were
affected by cancer, and others saw this as an opportunity to give hope to someone who
might be struggling with the effects of chemotherapy. Regardless of the reason they
gave, the 95 ponytails that were cut will be used to either create wigs or financially
support the Locks of Love organization so they can continue to offer their services to
cancer patients. This year’s participants were Briony Brink, Lydia Brown, Jordan
Cassidy, Devon Causey, Jenna Cortez, Cathy Dewey, Jessica Domke, Miranda
Eaton, Lexi Edwards, Missi Edwards, Rebekah Frampton, Rebecca Franks, Chloe
Hollar, Tabitha Lewis, Cyndi Lako, Shaina Lako, Makade Miarer, Alyssa Potteiger,
Preston Potteiger, Sarah Reichenbaugh, Hailey Routzon, Terri Sattler, Teresa
Schultz, Hope Serrano, Natasha Simons, Ally Strong, Emma Strong, Tori Swain,
Emily Toupalik, Catelyn Vermillion, and Mandy Vermillion.
Thank you to everyone who participated this year, and we are looking for even more
people to donate next year. This opportunity is open for any community members, so
if you have any questions or would like to participate, contact Michael Daniels at 419299-3384 ext. 410.

Sixth Graders Participate in "Disability Awareness
Day"
What would it be like
to be disabled? Sixth
grade students found out
firsthand by participating
in “Disability Awareness
Day” on May 26. Students
were inspired to learn more
about disabilities after reading the realistic fiction,
Freak the Mighty. The two
main characters are learning disabled and handicapped. To help students
understand disabilities,
each one was “inflicted”
with a certain disease or
syndrome. They researched their condition Justin Waller tries out an adaptive bike with assistance from
and then came to school Mr. Marshall.
with a particular physical
or cognitive disability. Then on May 27, guest speaker, Mike Miles, helped students
get a feel for what people with disabilities must do to participate in activities that they
often take for granted by allowing them to try out some adaptive equipment. He also
showed them his car that has been adapted with hand controls.
Mike lives in Findlay with his wife and son and works for the Sandusky County
Board of Developmental Disabilities. He was formerly employed by the Abilities Center
of Toledo, Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and the Hancock County
Board of Developmental Disabilities. He graduated from Liberty Benton High School
where he was a multi-sport athlete. During his college years he was involved in a car
accident that left him without the use of his legs. However, Mike decided that he would
not allow that to affect
his love of sports. He
not only got involved in
wheelchair basketball,
softball, golf, and tennis, but he also became an advocate for
those with disabilities.
He has travelled all over
the United States and
other countries playing in international, national, and local tournaments. He also
helps people with disabilities find the adaptive equipment they
need to be able to participate in their favorite
activities.

Kids Walk for Special Olympics
This year the elementary students and staff ended the year learning more about
the Special Olympics and helping the Area 3 Special Olympics. We had two goals
for this year’s Last Day Walk. The first goal was to help encourage respect for Special
Olympics athletes. Did you know that some area Special Olympics athletes train
every day for their sport? Did you know that anyone with an intellectual disability age
8 or older can compete in the Special Olympics? Did you know that some Special
Olympics athletes compete at the national and world level? For a wonderful video about
the Special Olympics, check this out http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=m1Tf8lwC5R8&feature=youtu.be.
Our second goal was to raise funds to help the Area 3 Ohio Special Olympics buy
medals. We raised $646.43
through the generous donations
of students and staff at Van Buren Elementary. This money will
help Area 3 buy medals for local
competitions. Area 3 covers Hancock and Putnam County plus
other counties in northwest Ohio.
For more information about the
Ohio Special Olympics (they are
always looking for athletes and
volunteers) or to make a donation, visit www.sooh.org or contact Audrey Beining at
[email protected].
This is the fifth year the elementary has ended the last day of school with a “Walk”
and once again the Clyde-Findlay Area Credit Union donated bottles of water for
everyone. Thank you!
Elementary Last Day Picnic
This year’s Last Day Picnic was another successful event! Special thanks to all
who gave a donation of time and/or money, especially:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
All the VB kids who donated $1
Chris McKinley - he provided the grill and grilled all those hot dogs in the
intense heat
Max & Erma’s Restaurant - they provided a FREE Sundae Bar for everyone
– ice cream, toppings, bowls, and even spoons
Coca-Cola – donated most of the beverages
Van Buren Elementary Parents Association – paid for the picnic beyond what
was donated and they also helped with shopping for the food and supplies
Chris McMonigal – ordered food and arranged for delivery to the school
Nicole Seitz and 40+ additional volunteers gladly served food, squeezed
ketchup bottles, swept the floor, etc.
Many more people deserve thanks for helping with our traditional Last Day
Picnic – THANK YOU!

May Knights of the Round Table
Students selected by their noon monitors enjoyed lunch and an ice cream treat
as “Round Table Knights” — a reward for their positive attitude and behavior during the
month of May. Students were also able to invite a friend or family member to join them
at the round table.
VB Sophomore Competes in Three Events at State
Congratulations to Sarah Benson. Sarah competed in three events at Regional final’s on Friday,
May 27 and won all of them. She was victorious in the
100m dash, 200m dash, and the Long Jump. She set
a new school record in the Long Jump! This advanced
her to the state track and field meet in at Jesse Owens
Stadium at The Ohio State University on Friday and
Saturday, June 3 and 4.
Sarah had a phenomenal showing at State with a
3rd place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18’00.25"!
She also placed 6th in the 100 and 5th in the 200 to make
the medal stands at state! In addition to her accomplishments on the track she also received the rank of
“Academic All-Ohio” by performing in the classroom with an accumulative GPA of 3.95!
What a great representation for Van Buren!

Senior Varsity Choir Members Sing as They Go on Middle School Band Performs at Memorial Day
Their Way
Ceremony
The 2010-2011 school year was the first year for the new Van Buren Varsity Choir
and the year has gone quickly. After countless performances together (most of these
students have been together for at least three years), the 2011 graduates joined
together with next year’s seniors as they performed “Omnia Sol” in their last
performance together at Van Buren at the High School Awards Assembly.
While most middle school students were enjoying sleeping in on Memorial Day,
the students in the band were playing at a Memorial Day Ceremony to honor the fallen
heroes of our Armed Services. The middle school band alternates with the high school
band every other year to have the honor to participate in the annual services at Bechtel
Cemetery.
Mr. Vaughn leads the full “inaugural” Varsity Choir for the final time.
Mr. Eakin prepares to lead the middle school band at services in Bechtel Cemetery.
May was Music Month at Van Buren
The Sound of Music filled the halls at Van Buren Schools in May as every student
of music was involved in a concert during the last month of the school year.
The middle school was the first to hold their concert on May 10 as both band and
choir students delighted their parents and friends alike.
The elementary students held their Art Extravaganza on May 12 featuring the Fifth
Grade Band and songs by each grade. The event had a patriotic theme and was
dedicated to our community’s veterans. After the concert, the students had a chance
to show off their art work.
The High School Spring Awards was the final concert and featured Men’s and
Women’s Chorus, the Varsity Choir (Jr./Sr.) and Mixed Chorus (Fr./Soph.). A first time
event at the concert was the Robing Ceremony in which the senior members passed
their stoles to next year’s junior members. Jessica Domke and Joseph Simon were
awarded Choral Director’s Awards for their outstanding service to the choir. The
evening finished with selections from the High School Concert Band.
The Music Boosters would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr.
Rick Eakin, winner of the 2011 Golden Apple Award as the outstanding High School
teacher in Hancock County!
As a final farewell, the senior choir member sang “May You Always Have a Song”
at their Graduation on May 29.
Have a Safe and Enjoyable
Summer Vacation
Annual Music Department Picnic Set for July 13
Van Buren State Park is the place to be on Wednesday, July 13 if you have a
student in band or choir next year. This is a great time to celebrate the past year and
look forward to next year. It’s also a good time to just visit with friends and get to know
the directors.
The fun begins at 5:30 P.M. with dinner served at 6:00 P.M. and is open to all music
students and their families. The Boosters provide the meat and drinks, families are
asked to bring a side dish to share and their table service. Feel free to bring along some
yard games to add to the fun!
