Westglow Neighbors Plan Fathers Day Surprise
Fathers Day this year was an
extra special day for Ed Stanton.
Ed is affectionately know as the
“Mayor of Westglow.” Several of
Ed’s friends and neighbors in
the Westglow community got
together and surprised him with
a new BBQ grill. In the past, Ed
had always grilled with charcoal.
Charcoal is a thing of the past Ed’s new grill is powered by
propane.
thrilled when they found out that
their house payments were less
than they were paying for rent.
During the construction of
Westglow, Ed was right there to
help not only those working on
his home, but to donate over 400
Fathers Day was an appropriate day to surprise Ed with the
new grill. He is like a grandfather to many of the children in
the neighborhood. He is “Pa Pa
Ed” to little Anna Burgess.
When Ed and his wife Lori
decided to purchase their first
home, they were delighted to
learn that they qualified for a
Wesley CDC home. They were
hours of sweat equity to other
families in Westglow.
Several of these neighbors
and friends joined together to
purchase Ed’s grill, including:
Teresa St. Clair, Joey Carter,
Terry and Michelle Henderson,
Dave and Jennifer
Laughlin, Jerry and
Cathy
Henderson,
Chris and Kim Burgess, and Ed and
Lori’s
children,
Christopher,
Rory
and Jessica.
When asked why
they bought this
wonderful gift for Ed,
Kim Burgess said,
“We all love Ed. He
is a special person
to all of us.”

5th Anniversary Celebration at Westglow on October 25th
The first homeowner moved
in at Westglow in July 2003.
Hundreds of volunteers gave of
their time and effort to build this
beautiful community. So much
has happened during the past
five years. Sixteen families now
own homes and are raising their
families at Westglow. Lawns are
lush green and plants have
matured. Westglow is a beautiful suburban neighborhood.
In 2005, the North Carolina
Housing Finance Agency named
Westglow the best affordable
single family development in a
rural area in the State of North
Carolina.
The residents of Westglow
have built a strong and supportive community. They are living
our goal of “Building Communities of Grace and Hope.”
A Block Party will be held at
Westglow to celebrate the first
five years of this wonderful
neighborhood. The party will be
held on Saturday, October 25,
2008 from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
The residents of Westglow will
be the guests of honor. Volunteers who worked on homes in
Westglow are also invited to
attend. Please call the Wesley
CDC office if you plan to attend.

Dedication of Home in Liberty
Wesley CDC’s second
“Faith Based” home was
dedicated on June 1st just
outside of Liberty. Paul and
Debbie Holt along with their
three daughters and baby
son are the homeowners.
Tabernacle UMC was
the lead church on this project. The Holts are members
at Tabernacle. Pastor Mark
Weekly recruited several
other churches in the area to
assist with the construction
of the Holt’s home. Many of
the volunteers on the Holt
house are active in a local
building team called Meshach’s Carpenters. During
three days of work, the
volunteers, led by Meshach’s
Carpenters, raised the walls,
set the trusses, installed the
windows and dried the
house in.
The Staff of Wesley CDC
would like to thank the many
volunteers who worked on
the Holt house for making
this project a huge success.

Duke Divinity School Intern
Thanks to a grant from The Duke Endowment, Wesley CDC
was blessed to have David Hiatt intern with us this summer.
David is a native of Thomasville and is a graduate of High Point
University. Next June, David hopes to be appointed to a rural
church in the Western North Carolina Conference.
David had the opportunity to work on a number of projects
this summer. His focus was on our volunteer ministry, with an
emphasis on how to improve upon the volunteer experience at
Wesley CDC. Our thanks to David for his outstanding work
during his internship. Our prayers go with him as he completes
his third and final year at the Duke Divinity School.

Second Faith Based Home Completed
Wesley CDC, in partnership with seven churches in the

it’s second faith based home.
Pastor Mark Weekly of Tabernacle UMC in Liberty, NC contacted

increase across the country in defaults on mortgages and
foreclosures of homes over the past year. Our out-of-town
guests were particularly pleased to learn that none of
Wesley’s 55 homeowners has defaulted on their mortgage.
Diligent work by our staff when closing loans, the contribution of volunteer labor to keep our housing prices low, and
an outstanding group of homeowners have joined together
to maintain our zero default rate.
Changes to Board of Wesley CDC
During the summer of 2008 there
were several significant changes to the
Board of Directors of Wesley CDC.
Richard Alsop, a charter member of
the Board and former Vice Chairman
tendered his resignation. Several of
the most significant programs of
Wesley CDC originated with Richard.
Among his many contributions is our
“Faith Based” ministry which allows
churches throughout the Conference to
partner with Wesley CDC to build a
home for a family in need in their
community. The Board and Staff of
Wesley CDC would like to thank
Richard for his faithful service and
leadership over the past six years.
Rev. Olin Isenhour, a long time
board member, also left the Board.
Olin’s many years of service to our
Conference includes not only his work
with Wesley CDC, but also Conference
Treasurer, work with overseas and
domestic missions, and leadership at
churches too numerous to list. Well
done our good and faithful servant.
Rev. Stephen James was named
as the new Director of Connectional
Ministries on the Conference Staff in
June. This position includes membership on the Board of Wesley CDC.
Steve’s ministry has been marked by
many years of mission outreach. His
prior experience will be very beneficial
to our programs at Wesley CDC.
June also saw the move of Rev.
Arnetta Beverly from the Director of
Connectional Ministries position to
become pastor of St. Matthews UMC
in Greensboro. Arnetta was asked to
continue her work with Wesley CDC.
She has graciously agreed to continue
serving on our Board. We are very
thankful that her energy and leadership
will remain with us.
Finally, Leigh Ann Smith, a member
of Myers Park UMC in Charlotte, is our
newest Board Member. Leigh Ann has
worked for the past six years in community development lending at Bank of
America financing affordable housing
projects throughout the southeast. Her
passion for developing affordable
housing will be a tremendous asset to
the Board of Wesley CDC.
