2013 Annual Report - Bayfront Maritime Center
A N N U AL R E P O R T 2 0 1 3 FROM THE DIRECTOR BMC celebrated its 15th anniversary in May! BMC has become a staple on the waterfront over the years, remaining on the cutting edge with unique and effective programming for Erie youth. Our latest boatbuilding project, the St. Ayles Skiff, is the start of Erie’s first ever Community Rowing Program! In the face of budget cuts, BMC continued to deliver the quality programs that produce stellar kids! We are pleased to announce that BMC’s after-school program for teens, Project SAIL, has been partially funded for 3 years by the United Way of Erie County. Please visit BMC’s waterfront campus to see the important work we do with youth. Thank you for being a part of our story! Rich Eisenberg SMALL BOAT FESTIVAL The third annual Cardboard Boat Regatta inspired young and old to build and race in boats made of only cardboard, tape, glue, and paint. The event is fun for those on and off the water. In 2012 the Juvenile Justice Department’s boat exemplified a core value of BMC, determination in the face of adversity. Their boat “Takin’ A Bite Outta Crime” capsized at the dock and the participants went into the water. All had given up except for one young man who got back into the half-sunken boat and finished the entire race by himself. The expansion to a Small Boat Festival included the Presque Isle Bay Messabout. The Messabout drew participants from all over the country, including Florida. The 2013 Small Boat Festival will take place the weekend of Saturday, August 10th. You can register online at: www.bayfrontcenter.org/ cardboard/ “I was shut down when I came to BAEP but the teachers broke down my walls, and now I enjoy learning.” -Eric B. BAEP Student and Project SAIL Apprentice BAYFRONT ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM The Bayfront Alternative Education Program is a collaborative partnership between the Sarah A. Reed Children’s Center, Erie School District, and BMC. BAEP staff utilize the Sanctuary Model which teaches social skills such as: non-violence, emotional intelligence, social learning, and open communication. This year the students built a St. Ayles Skiff and practiced their language arts skills by creating a student boatbuilding blog. See all the hard work they’ve been doing by visiting: bmcstaylesskiff.blogspot.com PROJECT SAIL Project SAIL is an after-school program for students (15-18) to experience hands-on maritime based educational and vocational training. The after-school period is an extremely vulnerable time for youth. BMC fills this void by providing active, innovative, and engaging programming. Project SAIL is made possible by a 3 year challenge grant from the T.K. Foundation. The United Way of Erie County matched this grant to continue Project SAIL through 2016. Why Project Based Learning works: Increases long-term retention of content Improves problem-solving and collaborative skills Improves students’ attitudes towards learning Strobel & van Barneveld 2009 & Walker & Leary 2009 “My favorite subject is Science. This is my first year in the Bayfront Summer Program. My favorite part is getting to go on boats.” -Kasline B. 3rd grader from Puerto Rico BAYFRONT SUMMER MIGRANT PROGRAM The nationally recognized Bayfront Migrant IU5/ESD Summer Program offers a unique summer learning experience for children of migrant workers and students who are English Language Learners. The program is a partnership between the Pennsylvania Department of Education-Migrant Division, the Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit 5, the School District of the City of Erie, Edinboro University and the Bayfront Maritime Center. The Bayfront Migrant program helps students progress with their academics and language skills. The unique combination of on the water experience and hands-on learning are vital in these students’ success. “The value of the EASE Program can be seen on our daughter, Kristi's face every time she walks onto the dock to get ready to sail. Although she is non-verbal, the look on her face speaks volumes about how she loves to go sailing. Kristi absolutely loves the experience that keeps us coming back year after year.” -Tim H. EASE Parent ERIE ADAPTIVE SAILING EXPERIENCE Erie Adaptive Sailing Experience (EASE) is a volunteer run sailing program that allows children with physical and mental challenges to enjoy the adventure of sailing. EASE is the only adaptive sailing program in Pennsylvania. The experience of sailing brings joy and independence to its participants. Bren Lindell, co-director of EASE and BMC Board President says, “The EASE program enjoyed another great summer of sailing. In the last three years we have been concentrating on capacity building by purchasing 3 new boats and adding a new dock. Our most prized asset continues to be our volunteers that have enabled us to expand our program, adding new ideas and enthusiasm.” Become a BMC member today! “Being a member and a volunteer at BMC, I feel that my donation and my time makes a difference in the lives of Erie youth.” - Jerry Bien Member & Volunteer BMC MEMBERS Admiral ($1,000 and up) J.C.
