The foundation is being laid, however, for a strong recovery.
It’s a recovery that many now forecast because of pent-up
demand following the near-record low sales years of 2009 and
2010, which at 33,600 new vehicles last year and the predicted 34,500 vehicles
this year will be far below the 50,000 new vehicles per year average recorded
over the last twenty years.

The foundation for growth has been laid by the passage of Hawaii’s new
franchise law—which protects investments in dealerships by establishing
vehicle buyback requirements and payments for dealership value in the event
of a line make termination or termination of a dealer without good cause by
a manufacturer. The law thus benefits auto dealers, auto manufacturers, and
consumers as it helps stabilize an industry turned on its side by the worldwide
financial crisis and the bankruptcies of two domestic auto giants.
You’ll learn more about the foundation for recovery at the association’s annual
convention. Jan Whiteside has planned a special event for the HADA 51st
convention—October 14-17, 2010 – at the Waikaloa Resort on the Big Island.
Sponsorships are coming in at a record pace and the accompanying Friday and
Saturday morning golf events will now allow afternoons off—providing time
to meet informally with fellow dealers or for scheduled one-on-one time with
sponsors in the various meeting areas at the resort.
Then, the media and the Hawaii public will get a glimpse of the Future of
the Automobile at the 2011 First Hawaiian International Auto Show. The
event has been themed “The Big Bang” –to show the explosion of new vehicle
technology coming out in 2011—particularly in the areas of fuel efficiency.
The new CAFE standards may require automakers to produce fleets with
average 39 mpg cars in 2016.
With a united dealer group supported by strong associate members, the new
Franchise Law, and a strong 2011 First Hawaiian International Auto Show,
dealers will be positioned for a robust return of auto sales come July 2011. I’m
looking forward to seeing everyone at the convention.

Be part of the action at the First Hawaiian

as it drives into the Hawaii Convention Center
(HCC) in Honolulu. This is the location for
dealers and manufacturers to showcase
their newest vehicles and technology to
thousands of attendees. One-in-five new
car buyers will attend an auto show within
12 months of their purchase,* making the
auto show, with its no-pressure atmosphere,
the ideal setting for area residents to compare
their favorite models before visiting their local
dealer and making their purchases.
with free Pizza
A major push by the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association will
be the dramatic simultaneous introduction of electric, hybrid, and
renewable energy vehicles to Hawaii at the auto show. Attendees
will be able to explore the latest alternative fuel models on display
and receive free pizza for taking an introductory test drive at the
auto show in the alternative fuel vehicles made available.

With an overall focus on cost containment, show management is
offering exhibitors the “same space for the same price” as paid in
2010. Additional space can be purchased at $ 3.15 per square foot.
We are also working with the general service contractor to maintain
low rates and efficient services for the show’s exhibitors.

attorney Jeff Perry, The Alliance’s Curt
Augustine, and GM’s Mark Mueller, and
to the American Honda Motor Company’s
Terri Harrington and to Governor Linda
Lingle and her administrative staff.
Thanks too, goes to the HADA franchise
committee which included Stan Masamitsu,
Joe Nicolai, Bill van den Hurk, Wayne De
Luz and Dennis Short, and to the HADA
executive committee for all the reviews
and the meetings with the Alliance. And
to those who provided helpful testimony
including Stan Masamitsu, Charlie King,
Handouts on the new franchise law were provided to some 40 dealers and
Ron Hansen, Bill van den Hurk, Mike
representatives of dealerships who attended a presentation at The Willows, August
Neithammer, Tom Griffin, Joe Nicolai, Joe
26, 2010, on the new motor vehicle franchise law delivered by Richard Sox, esq.
Hanley and Wayne De Luz.
HADA’s counsel, Rich Sox, esq. and Jason Allen, esq.
from Bass Sox Mercer played a pivotal role in Hawaii’s
legislation as well similar legislation passed in many
other states.
The following pages explain each change to the
franchise law made through Act 164, (bill SB2859) which
include termination benefits, successor protections,
parts warranty reimbursement requirements, add point
protections, and much more.
In summary
There was a great deal of trust and cooperation
displayed by all the stakeholders during the complex
legislative process. The HADA-initiated and
coordinated legislation brought everyone together
in special way for benefit of the auto industry and
consumers alike.

Hawaii Auto Outlook
™
Comprehensive Information on the Hawaii Automotive Market
Sponsored by: Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association
Covering Second Quarter 2010
Volume 9, Number 3
FORECAST
Hawaii Market Struggles to Post Gain in First Half of 2010
Small increase predicted for entire year
The Hawaii new vehicle market managed to
improve in the first half of this year versus
weak results a year earlier, but the increase
was small-just 1.4%. And compared to
historical norms, sales volumes were well
below average. (See sidebar on right for
specifics.) Auto Outlook predicts that this
general prescription of a relatively weak, but
growing new vehicle market will continue for
at least the next 18 months. Sales in the Third
Quarter of this year will have a hard time
beating last year’s total, which was boosted by
the Cash for Clunkers program. But a Fourth
Quarter increase is possible.
Two primary (and contradictory) forces will
be dictating the market for the foreseeable
future. The first factor (pent-up demand)
practically guarantees that new vehicle sales
will head higher. The second (reluctant, debtstrapped, and worried consumers) should lead
to a recovery that is gradual, with frustrating
stops and starts. Both are covered here.
Pent up demand. New vehicle sales declined
sharply in 2008 and 2009, and as a result,
pent up demand is at record-high levels. In
addition, the median age of vehicles on the
road continues to increase, and scrappage rates
are exceeding new vehicle sales. All of this is
strong evidence that replacement demand will
be a driving force for the market for many
years to come.
Reluctant consumers. Elevated household
debt levels, concerns about job security, stillweak credit availability, the prospects of
higher taxes, and uncertain financial markets
are making consumers reluctant to spend,
and uneasy about assuming new debt. In
addition, none of the issues keeping many
new vehicle shoppers on the sidelines have
quick remedies. The long term cure will
involve time and tough medicine, neither of
which is conducive to rapid growth in new
vehicle sales.
Bottom line: Pent-up demand dictates that
new vehicle sales will trend higher for the
next several years, but reluctant consumers
will dictate that the pace of the recovery will
be painfully slow.

registrations in Hawaii from 2005 thru 2009, and Auto
Outlook’s projection for 2010.

STATE MARKET VERSUS U.S.
Recovery in Hawaii Market Lags the Nation
State retail market up 1.4% during first half of this year compared to 9.8% increase in U.S.
The Hawaii new vehicle market has felt the
full impact of the financial market crisis
and ensuing economic recession. State
sales are significantly below 2007 levels,
and the severity of the downturn has been
more pronounced than in the Nation.
The first graph below shows Hawaii and
U.S. new retail light vehicle registrations
between 2007 and 2010. (This year’s total
is projected.) The state market (black line
and left axis) and U.S. (gray line and right
axis) have followed similar paths, but there
are some distinctions. The state market
declined at a slightly faster pace from
2007 to 2008, and the increase this year
will be less than in the U.S. As shown on
the graph below, state registrations were
up just 1.4% thru June of this year versus
9.8% in the Nation.

retail light vehicle markets. The table
is divided into four sections. Market
Summary shows total new retail
light vehicle registrations during the
first six months of 2009 and 2010
and the percent change. The second
and third sections show Light Truck
and Detroit Three market share.
The fourth section shows market
share figures for the top 10 selling
light vehicle brands in the state so
far this year. The top rated county
in each category is shaded. The
Oahu market increased 3.9% in the
first half of this year versus a year
earlier, with registrations declining
in the other three markets. Detroit
Three market share was highest in
Kauai (25.9%) and lowest on the Big
Island (14.4%).

For decades, Matson has supported Hawaii’s auto dealers as both a friend and partner. We have more sailings,
more often, to and from Hawaii than any other carrier. The Hawaii Auto Dealers Association can rely on Matson
to continue its proud tradition of providing regular,
reliable delivery of automobiles and outstanding
service, including up-to-date technology for vehicle
status reporting and tracking. And after 125 years
of service to the islands, members can continue to
