Our goal of creating opportunities for recreation, conservation, and relaxation has taken on new life as we build
trails and recreational facilities for families creating a healthy lifestyle together.
Last fall, the extension of the Little Turtle Waterway
Trail was completed. This 10’ wide paved path starts at
the parking lot at the Little Turtle Waterway Plaza and
runs an additional .6 miles to the point that 12th Street
would run into the Wabash River. The highlights of the
trail include limestone pillars and a seating wall at its
Berkley Street entrance, a limestone seating wall at the
end of the trail, and many beautiful vistas of the Wabash
River and its wildlife all along the trail. When added to
the trail that runs along the Wabash to the Confluence of
the Eel/Wabash Rivers, a person now has a completed
mile of distance to walk or run on. People will also find
there is a canoe access ramp into the Wabash River, a
parking lot, and a drinking fountain at the Berkley Street
trailhead. We hope to someday be able to complete the trail all the way to 18th Street.
Currently, we are in the middle of 2 additional construction projects: the Eel River Run Trail, and Huston Park.
The Eel River Run is an urban trail that begins at the east end of Riverside Park, runs along the north side of
Race Street, continues on the west side of 7th Street, and then follows the north sidewalk of High Street to 3rd
and High Streets. The primary highlight of the new urban trail includes the establishment of a new trailhead at 4th
& High Streets called Stonewall Park, which will feature a plaza area with wildflowers & warm season grasses, a
seating wall with views of the Eel River, and a new piece of public art to be unveiled in the late summer/early fall
of 2012. The Eel River Run trail – while urban in nature – will give people an opportunity to see the Eel River up
close in Riverside Park. Coming in late 2013/2014 is the new bridge to connect the Eel River Run to the River
Bluff Trail on the north side of the Eel River.
Construction on Huston Park began this spring. Huston Park is an 80 acre piece of land located on Smith
Street that was donated to the City of Logansport by the family of Harry H. Huston. Along with this donation,
Jeffrey Penman and Connie Owens donated their former office building for indoor gatherings at Huston Park.
For the construction of Huston Park, donations were also made by the McTaggart Family Trust, Mike Anderson
Auto Group, Logansport Savings Bank, as well as an anonymous donor. Along with two grants from the Land
and Water Conservation Fund, we have begun to create a new park that will give our community a place for kids
to run, and families to gather. Highlights of this new facility include the Mike Anderson Community Complex-a
recreation field for soccer and football activities, 1.5 miles of trail, a playground for 2-5, and 5-12 year olds, a
restroom and a parking lot. Future plans include formal soccer and football fields and an amphitheatre. The
Penman Building will also house the Parks Office in the future.
Want to get involved in Huston Park? In the fall, Live United Day volunteers will be helping us build the
playground, build shelters, and help landscape the property. If you are interested, contact Janet Fawley at 574753-6969 or [email protected] . Your help would be most welcome!
Have a great summer in your Logansport Parks!

LITTLE TURTLE WATERWAY EVENTS
Little Turtle Waterway
Plaza & Trail
LOCATED ALONG THE WABASH RIVER JUST SOUTH OF
MELBOURNE AVENUE
This park is the newest addition to the park system (12 years in the
making) dedicated in May of 1999. These five acres of wonderfully
developed greenspace on the Wabash River include a central plaza,
archway entrance, significant landscaping, scenic overlook of the
river, access to the Wabash from the plaza, electrical outlets for power
needs, central irrigation system and a trail head. Much of the success
of this development is directly attributed to the Little Turtle Waterway
Corporation and their devotion to seeing this project through completionn.
Logans Landing is a non-profit organization dedicated to making Cass
Countys downtown between-the-rivers district a viable place to operate a business, a rewarding place to live,
and a fun place to visit. For more information, call the Logans Landing office at 722-9345.
Celebrate Logansport
In early June, Logan’s Landing encourages everyone
to “Celebrate Logansport!” by coming downtown for
free musical entertainment and free birthday cake in
honor of the city’s “birthday.” Logan’s Landing sells
strawberry shortcake at this event as a fundraiser for our
organization’s programs and activities. This year’s event
will be held on Thursday June 7th from 11-2 at the corner
of Fourth and Market in downtown Logansport (Farmer’s
Market lot). Carry-outs available. To purchase advance
tickets, call Logan’s Landing at 722-9345.

Taste of Cass County
4
On Saturday August 11, 2012 Logan’s Landing will
host the Seventh Annual Taste of Cass County at Little
Turtle Waterway. Last year’s event was a great success!
Approximately 3500 attendees sampled refreshments
from a dozen local vendors, listened to live music, took
golf cart tours of the Little Turtle Waterway, and enjoyed
all that downtown Logansport and Cass County has to
offer. A minimal admission fee is charged for entry to the
street fair area. After entering the festival area, attendees
then purchase refreshment tickets for $1 each, which are
then exchanged at various food and drink merchants. This
event is one of Logan’s Landing’s primary fundraisers
each year.
JazzFest
The Med Flory Jazz & Blues Festival will take place
at the Little Turtle Waterway on Friday, June 8th, from
6pm-Midnight and Saturday, June 9th from 6pm-Midnight.
Many wonderful musical acts will perform and lots of great
food and drink will round out the weekend. Bring your
friends and family for an exciting weekend of wonderful
music! Must be 21 to attend this event.
For ticket prices and performance times,
visit the website: www.floryfest.org .
Art on the Avenue

a pedestrian bridge to be built in 2013 at the east end
of Riverside Park.

ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT TO BE VIEWED!
The Logansport Parks & Recreation Department would
like to invite the public to participate in an opportunity to
view a very special celestial event that will take place
in the western evening sky. On Tuesday, June 5th,
beginning at 6 p.m., Venus will start to transit across
the Sun. The Sun will set at 9:11pm with the transit still
in progress. Transits of Venus are among the rarest of
predictable astronomical phenomena. In order to view thiss
event safely, observers must have safety equipment to
protect the eyes. Local astronomer Forrest Hamilton will
provide several large telescopes with solar filters for publicc
viewing. After the Sun sets, Mars and Saturn will be in full
view, as well as the full Moon.
Those who have a telescope are encouraged to share
with others to view the night sky, but will not be able to use
for the daytime viewing of the Venus transit. Participants
may also wish to consider bringing along a camcorder
or digital camera to take pictures through the large
telescopes that will be present. If the evening is cloudy,
the star party will not be held.

Your youth will learn the fundamentals they need to get started playing golf the right way. This junior program will
also help those who are already involved in golf hone their skills to become a better player. The program covers
every area of the golf swing, from hitting the ball from the tee, to the putting green. The program has been very
successful in years past and participation is limited, so make plans in advance to attend. A limited number of golf
clubs are available to be borrowed from the Parks Department. Students are generally responsible for providing
their own equipment.
