Spring/Summer p g R Recreation Guide ’12 EVENTS FUN CHILDREN & ADULT ACTIVITIES LOGANSPORT PARKS DEPT. 1212 Riverside Dr. • Logansport, IN 46947 • (574)753-6969 E-mail: [email protected] @ g p MISSION OF THE LOGANSPORT PARKS DEPARTMENT: Logansport Parks & Recreation is committed to improving the quality of life for Loganland residents by preserving land, facilities, the environment and our natural heritage and by creating significant opportunities for recreation, conservation, relaxation, and education for now and future generations. WWW.LOGANSPORTPARKS.COM Many wonderful additions are taking place. Janet Fawley Parks Administrator PHOTO POLICY Please be aware that personnel from the Logansport Parks & Recreation Department and local media may photograph program participants throughout our programs, special events, and park facilities to assist in the promotion of the many opportunities that are offered to our community in the city parks. These photos may be used in the newspaper, brochures, our website or other promotional materials. Published photographs do not identify participants by name without your permission. Please inform our photographer if you do not want you or your children’s picture taken. spring/summer 2012 www.logansportparks.com Our goal of creating opportunities for recreation, conservation, and relaxation has taken on new life as we build trails and recreational facilities for families creating a healthy lifestyle together. Last fall, the extension of the Little Turtle Waterway Trail was completed. This 10’ wide paved path starts at the parking lot at the Little Turtle Waterway Plaza and runs an additional .6 miles to the point that 12th Street would run into the Wabash River. The highlights of the trail include limestone pillars and a seating wall at its Berkley Street entrance, a limestone seating wall at the end of the trail, and many beautiful vistas of the Wabash River and its wildlife all along the trail. When added to the trail that runs along the Wabash to the Confluence of the Eel/Wabash Rivers, a person now has a completed mile of distance to walk or run on. People will also find there is a canoe access ramp into the Wabash River, a parking lot, and a drinking fountain at the Berkley Street trailhead. We hope to someday be able to complete the trail all the way to 18th Street. Currently, we are in the middle of 2 additional construction projects: the Eel River Run Trail, and Huston Park. The Eel River Run is an urban trail that begins at the east end of Riverside Park, runs along the north side of Race Street, continues on the west side of 7th Street, and then follows the north sidewalk of High Street to 3rd and High Streets. The primary highlight of the new urban trail includes the establishment of a new trailhead at 4th & High Streets called Stonewall Park, which will feature a plaza area with wildflowers & warm season grasses, a seating wall with views of the Eel River, and a new piece of public art to be unveiled in the late summer/early fall of 2012. The Eel River Run trail – while urban in nature – will give people an opportunity to see the Eel River up close in Riverside Park. Coming in late 2013/2014 is the new bridge to connect the Eel River Run to the River Bluff Trail on the north side of the Eel River. Construction on Huston Park began this spring. Huston Park is an 80 acre piece of land located on Smith Street that was donated to the City of Logansport by the family of Harry H. Huston. Along with this donation, Jeffrey Penman and Connie Owens donated their former office building for indoor gatherings at Huston Park. For the construction of Huston Park, donations were also made by the McTaggart Family Trust, Mike Anderson Auto Group, Logansport Savings Bank, as well as an anonymous donor. Along with two grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, we have begun to create a new park that will give our community a place for kids to run, and families to gather. Highlights of this new facility include the Mike Anderson Community Complex-a recreation field for soccer and football activities, 1.5 miles of trail, a playground for 2-5, and 5-12 year olds, a restroom and a parking lot. Future plans include formal soccer and football fields and an amphitheatre. The Penman Building will also house the Parks Office in the future. Want to get involved in Huston Park? In the fall, Live United Day volunteers will be helping us build the playground, build shelters, and help landscape the property. If you are interested, contact Janet Fawley at 574753-6969 or [email protected] . Your help would be most welcome! Have a great summer in your Logansport Parks! LETTER FROM OM THE ADMINISTRATOR Creating a Healthy Lifestyle 3 LITTLE TURTLE WATERWAY EVENTS Little Turtle Waterway Plaza & Trail LOCATED ALONG THE WABASH RIVER JUST SOUTH OF MELBOURNE AVENUE This park is the newest addition to the park system (12 years in the making) dedicated in May of 1999. These five acres of wonderfully developed greenspace on the Wabash River include a central plaza, archway entrance, significant landscaping, scenic overlook of the river, access to the Wabash from the plaza, electrical outlets for power needs, central irrigation system and a trail head. Much of the success of this development is directly attributed to the Little Turtle Waterway Corporation and their devotion to seeing this project through completionn. The Logansport Parks & Recreation Department would like to invite the public to participate in an opportunity to view a very special celestial event that will take place in the western evening sky. On Tuesday, June 5th, beginning at 6 p.m., Venus will start to transit across the Sun. The Sun will set at 9:11pm with the transit still in progress. Transits of Venus are among the rarest of predictable astronomical phenomena. In order to view thiss event safely, observers must have safety equipment to protect the eyes. Local astronomer Forrest Hamilton will provide several large telescopes with solar filters for publicc viewing. After the Sun sets, Mars and Saturn will be in full view, as well as the full Moon. Those who have a telescope are encouraged to share with others to view the night sky, but will not be able to use for the daytime viewing of the Venus transit. Participants may also wish to consider bringing along a camcorder or digital camera to take pictures through the large telescopes that will be present. If the evening is cloudy, the star party will not be held. Benjamin Long Recreation Center RIVERSIDE SIDE PARK / BENJAMIN LON LONG CENTER Star Partyy 101 N.
